Back up question

I'm new to Mac, and am reasonably proficient with MS Windows (Vista). I have a Vista machine and a Mac Mini without a DVD burner, along with a Timecapsule hardwired to the PC. To back up my Mac Mini, which I use exclusively for iTunes and media, I formatted a Seagate external HDD and use Time Machine to back up.
Here is my problem...I want to burn DVDs with my iTunes library on them as another physical back up. I tried to connect the external HDD to the PC, and of course it didn't show up since it is formatted for a Mac. Then, I changed the back up disk to the Time Machine, and it appears that I did indeed back up my Mac; I got many files, called 'bands', all the same size, 8.192MB. Presumably that is my data. (Note that the Time Capsule is formatted for Windows.)
When I used iTunes in a Windows environment,it was fairly straightforward to burn my library on a series of DVDs, and I'd like to try to do that with my iTunes in the Mac environment. If it helps, I've formatted by iPhone and old first generation ipod to operate from the Mac. My itunes file is about 17GB.
Thanks, sorry for the long drawn out explanation.

OK, I got it. I changed the Seagate external HDD back up disk to the TM and then after I backed up one time, changed the backup back to the Seagate from the TM.
TM is software so I don't know what you mean by this. do you perhaps mean a *Time Capsule*?
File sharing is explained in iTunes, I just was not aware it would work cross-platform. I'll play around with this.
Permissions in Windows Vista ia a nosebleed, and about a year ago is one thing that tempted me to migrate from being a 20 year Windows user to trying to learn the Mac OS. I've not moved to Windows 7 yet.
I bring these troubles upon myself by mixing OS platforms and using the Time Capsule as my router.
ah, you DO mean a Time Capsule. you were using wrong terminology that got me confused. then you can also just store the itunes library on the Time Capsule and you should be able to access it from both the mac and the windows. just move it from your mac hard drive to the time capsule and change the location of the library in itunes preferences. alternatively, start itunes on the mac while holding option. it will let you choose the library location. I'm sure there is a similar procedure in windows.
Bonjour does not like MS printer installations, and I can't seem to get a printer to operate as a network printer, i.e. plugged into the Time Capsule. Apple says it is because I've mixed OS's.

  • Front end and back end questions

    Hi,
    If I want to develop a web base SOA application by using Jcaps, I have several question want to ask.
    1.) In the front end, if i create the page by using eVision to create the page
    flow and the page layout, how can I match the fields of the page (such
    as the username, email, tel no... with the back end web services?
    2.) Does the flow of the front end web pages are control by the page flow in
    eVision? When will the eVision supported AJAX or JSF?
    3.) What is the use of the eInsight Business process manager, does it
    control all the back end flow, such as the flow of each web services?
    Does Jcaps has the Bpel engine to control the flow of web services?
    4.) I know that in JBoss, there is a jBPM server to control the flow of the front
    end pages, does JCAPS has this kind of server?
    5.) If i want to connect to the Database? I know that there is a eTL to extract
    the data from the database, it is true? Or do u recommend to connect the
    database directly through the web services by using JDBC or other
    framework as well?
    6.) If I have an existing application that is developed by .Net (With no web
    services). How can i integrate with other systems? What can I do in order
    to reuse the system? Or what Jcaps can do in this manner?
    Thanks for you reply! ^ ^

    Generally, back-end would consist of the taks associated with configuration of data targets (ODS, Cubes), working with extractors, mapping data to the data targets, writing transfer/start rtn/update rules, and creating Infopkgs/ Process Chains.
    Front-end deals with the use of the BW - writing queries, workbooks, web (although I think some of the infrastructure aspects of web reporting. e.g. javascript/templates might really could be considered backend).  Think of Front-end as all of the client/customer/user facing components.

  • Back up Question when using backup not Time Machine

    Hi there, I currently have my Time capsule configured as a file server sharing my files between 3 macs on the TC's wifi and also via the back to my mac service, while outside my home. The 3 macs connected also use the TC as the time machine back up disk. This setup works fine but I have concerns about reports that TC's can just die and the files contained on it could be lost. To combat this I have set my macbook to perform a backup using the backup program once a day. This is set to backup the whole TC excluding the 3 Time capsule files to an external firewire disk. The problem seems to occur after about a day or two, when the backup program reports a failed backup due to not enough disk space but I don't understand this as the external firewire disk has enough space unless it is trying to carry out a complete backup again. Once the initial backup is done (about 6 hours) I can manually trigger a backup which completes in a matter of seconds and is labelled on the firewire disc as incremental and contains a few mb. Can any one explain this to me? and any posable fixes.
    Cheers
    Here are the figures.
    TC = 500GB
    TC Files= 87GB (Excluding the 3 TM backups)
    Firewire drive 160GB
    Initial Backup file size 87.7GB
    Successful Incremental Backup file size 4.2mb (done on same day as initial backup)
    2nd Sucsesfull Incremental Backup file size 2.1mb (manually triggered day after initial backup)
    Error backup file size 29kb (auto triggered day after initial backup)

    The current version of Backup won't do a full backup (after the first one) unless you tell it to, via +Plan > Full Backup+ from the menubar. But it will back up everything that was added or changed since the last backup, so an Incremental backup can be quite large.
    A clue may be lurking in the log for the failed backup.
    From the main Backup screen, select the Plan in question, then from the Menubar, +Plan > History.+ Then select the "event" in question and click the +View Details+ button at the bottom.
    If the log doesn't tell you much, copy and post it here (but if there's a long list of files copied, leave out most of that).

  • IPod syncing and backing up question!

    I just recently had to re-do my operating system with the recovery disk of my Windows XP laptop and had to wipe out everything and start fresh on the hard drive.
    I have everything on my iPod touch that has not been synced or backed up as all of that was gone like I said when I had to re-do my operating system on my Windows XP laptop which brought it back to day 1 and all of the previously synced and backed up data that was stored in iTunes on my laptop was wiped out as well.
    I don't want to lose what all I have on my iPod touch because I know that if I try to sync and backup my iPod touch it will think it's another computer and lose and wipe out everything that I have on my iPod touch as this has happened to me before in the past and it was all gone for good at that point.
    My question is this, how do I sync and backup my iPod touch on the same laptop that I used in the beginning when my iPod touch was brand new after I synced and backed up for the 1st time so that I won't lose everything on my iPod touch again so that it will recognize the same laptop I used in the beginning in iTunes?

    OK, these are good steps to follow for the purchases.
    What are the instructions for doing it for my Apps, Contacts, Websites I've saved on the iPod, Photos, Videos, Calendar, Notes, Messages, and Bookmarks so my laptop won't cause the iPod to delete any of these on me like the last time being that it thinks that it's a brand new iPod Touch and doesn't recognize it at all?
    Bear in mind still that I had to re-do my operating system for my Windows XP laptop from the recovery disk which brought it all back to day 1 from scratch. When I did this in the past and plugged in my iPod Touch to the laptop, it deleted and wiped out everything from the iPod Touch and had to start over. I don't want this to happen again.

  • Itunes library back up question?

    Hello, I have a question about my Itunes library. I went and ripped all of my CD's through Itunes. I was wondering if there was anyway I could get those ripped files and save them to my PC. I have my Itunes library backed up, but was wondering if this was possible.
    Thanks!

    How are you backing up the library? Done properly it should capture all of the media also. See Backup your iTunes for Windows library with SyncToy.

  • Cannot Order Front/Back a Question Rollover Caption

    Following from another post, http://forums.adobe.com/thread/609673, I cannot z-order the Rollover Caption when it's on a Question slide. I right-click the text caption and the Order -> Bring to Front / Send to Back options are grey / disabled. Is this a bug? Any workarounds/ideas?
    Thanks,

    Hi Matt
    Unfortunately Question slides are a bit of a different beast. I'm thinking about all you can do with this is to ensure the caption isn't obscured by Question elements.

  • Backing file question

    Very basic question
    I have three page --page 1 , page2 and page 3
    I have attached the below backing file to page2
    The println statement always says curPage to be page2 even when I click other pages (page1 and page3) I;m not clear why backing file is executed when page 1 and page 3 is clicked. any pointers?
    package age;
    import com.bea.netuix.servlets.controls.page.PageBackingContext;
    import javax.servlet.http.HttpServletRequest;
    import javax.servlet.http.HttpServletResponse;
    public class testPageBackingFile extends com.bea.netuix.servlets.controls.content.backing.AbstractJspBacking
    public boolean handlePostbackData(HttpServletRequest request, HttpServletResponse response) {
    PageBackingContext testContext = PageBackingContext.getPageBackingContext(request);
    String curPage = testContext.getLabel();
    system.out.println("curPage" + curPage);
    String newPage;
    try {
    Integer.parseInt(request.getParameter("age"));
    newPage = "page5";
    } catch (NumberFormatException nfe) {
    newPage = "page2";
    if(!curPage.equals(newPage)) {
    testContext.setupPageChangeEvent(newPage);
    return true;
    } else {
    return false;
    }

    Hello,
    Unless "Control Tree Optimization" is turned on, the handlePostbackData() method of every backing file in the whole desktop will generally be run, even if the page / book / portal the backing file is attached to is not being displayed.

  • Good old "Disable brower's Back button" question.

    I don't have to implement it. I am posing this question just out of curosity . Is there a way we can somehow disable Back button on our browser starting second page onwards?
    I recently browsed one site that had "Next" and Previous" buttons on each page. Surprisingly Back button on all the pages was disabled.
    I know, when we open the first page for browsing, Back button is disabled by default. Is there a way we can force browser to treat each and every page as the first page? How did they implement this functionality?
    Thanks.

    If you're using JSPs, simply ensure that they are not being cached by the browser.
    <%
    response.setHeader("Cache-Control","no-cache");
    response.setHeader("Pragma","no-cache");
    response.setDateHeader ("Expires", 0);
    %>Otherwise, there are a couple of ways to do this via Javascript.

  • Back up question -- space and location

    Silly question. I tried to search and find, but what does the ipad actually back up. I assume it doesn't duplicate photos, videos etc -- docs that are already on the mac. What does it back up and how much space does it take up since i can't find the backup file.

  • External Drive Back Up question

    Sorry, this is a long one....
    First off, my Mac consists of the following:
    iMac with 1 TB HD running OS 10.6.8
    500 GB External for Music
    2 TB with 1 TB partitions, one for time machine and the other for digital photo use
    I recently purchased another 2 TB external hard drive to back up my digital photos, which I was going to do manually.  I came across some info that leads me to believe that time machine will do this external drive to external drive photo backup for me automatically.  Assuming this is the case, I would like to make this new 2 TB drive my time machine drive.
    My question is, will time machine back up both my internal and one of my external hard drives to another external hard drive?  And if so, what is the process for swapping time maching drives?
    Thanks for any information

    As ssls6 mentioned yes TM will backup the external HD's. That being said you are playing with fire using the same physical HD to backup and also to store media. The reason being is if/when that drive fails (and it eventually will) you have lost both your photos (which are your memories!!!!) and your backup which could be a disaster. A general rule of thumb is backup HD's should be dedicated and not used for any other use.

  • Comming back, pidgin questions and where the ... is "archie"?

    Hey, I'm seriously thinking of comming back. Its been about a year since my last install.
    Going to try my hand at a virtual env later and see.
    First question would be 3rd party sites for software or those scripted pkg makers.. Are there some sites I should bookmark right now
    or is the majority of it kept in forum discussions?
    Is the voice and video working in newest pidgin? (gtalk)
    And where the HELL did "archie" go? The live arch cd that was in development. I reallly like having a live cd, or usb.
    Are there any live arch project being worked on? Can they work on usb? - sites / links / keyboard are wanted
    very curious
    Thanks
    Geo

    I did mean makepkg. While it is an easy (and great) way of making a package it isn't really in official packages.
    But its good to see it still available. Probably won't need to use it much now, but good its here.
    reguarding the live cd.. I haven't yet read through all the docs I need (getting back after a while and getting familiar with arch again)
    are there "remastering" guides for the live cd? Because I have a old usb drive I was going to install "damn small" or "slax" but
    if I could reduce the size I could add it and just be 100% arch again. (the size is 1gb BUT I need almost half for documents, my resume and some backups)

  • Another back-up question

    I have three internal hd's -
    one for OS & programs and Bootcamp - Seagate 7200.11 500gb
    one for scratch disk - Seagate 7200.10 250gb
    one for all my files - Seagate 7200.10 500gb. Mainly large RAW & TIFF files
    I have two external drives -
    320GB Lacie ESATA connection
    250GB Lacie Firewire 800
    I have just used SuperDuper to clone my OS HD to both external drives. I was going to use Time Machine on the 320 drive and just drag manually my files across to the 250 drive.
    Is this an OK way to back up or should I get another internal drive and use that for TimeMachine and then Raid 1 my two external drives - I know the 320 will become a 250 - and just manually back-up my work? Will that be OK as one is connected by ESATA and the other by Firewire?
    Since I installed the 7200.11 drive as my OS drive it does seem quicker. Would I benefit from another 7200.11 internal drive with my files on and then using the existing 7200.10 500gb internal drive as my TimeMachine folder?
    If I use one of my Lacie drives for a manual back-up is there any point having them plugged in and on all the time? Would they extend their lifespan by not having them on all the time or do they like to be used?
    Finally, I have an olde internal 250gb drive. Should I clone my OS drive onto this and then remove it from the MacPro and just reinstall it if I ever had a OS crash?
    Sorry for all the questions.

    Hi MarkLeary;
    I would recommend against using RAID1. It is not a backup solution. I think it will only add more complications to an already complicated situation.
    Personally having lived with the drag and drop backup solution in the past I don't recommend it. I think either Time Machine or SuperDuper is much better depending on your requirements.
    If you are going to create a backup to one of your Lacie drives I would recommend that you create a clone. This will allow you to boot from it in the case of trouble. This can easily be done with SuperDuper.

  • 2 Back up Questions Before Upgrading - Please

    Before going to 10.4.8 -
    I have an external hard drive with 3 partitions. Each partition has a Disc Utility bootable clone of one of my Macs (all G4's). Each clone is about 6 weeks old and I'd like to make them current (and most certainly bootable) before updating to 10.4.8, just in case.
    So, here's my 2 questions:
    1. Do I erase each partition before doing the new clone, OR do I simply click on Restore in Disc Utility, put the Source and Desitination volumes in the correct panes and then eecute the Restore command letting Disc Utility write over the existing clones, OR do I click on Restore and put the Source and Desitination volumes in the correct panes and go letting it write over the existing clones but check the "Erase Destination" box first?
    2. In case I have issues with 10.4.8 that I can't troubleshoot, and I need to go back, do I do a clean install of 10.4 and then clone back, or what is the exact procedure to getting a Mac back to its prior state with all prefernces and data and so forth the same as before (and of course back to an earlier OS) from a clone? I'd really like to get some detailed instructions on how to do this so I can print them out ahead of time.
    Thanks in advance, and Cheers!
    iMac CDRW Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hi
    There have been problems with individual files in the cloning process on some Macs. Once this occurs you will find that all cloning utilities choke on the same file. Retrospect will skip the file but others will just stop. If you see the FAQ on the SuperDuper! page you will see how you can exclude a folder from the clone, and avoid the problem. If you do not use the Dutch localisation of iTunes I would also try dragging the offending folder to the Desktop, launch iTunes and check that it is working properly, and if everything is ok delete the folder. Your clone should then go without problem.
    I also see that you have multiple threads running about this problem, with different information on each thread. This is not helpful! If you have Retrospect then you are best off using that app to achieve what you want. It is by far the most sophisticated backup app, and only need be avoided by those who crave simplicity.
    Edit: As an addendum to that, Retrospect, SuperDuper!, SilverKeeper and other cloning apps can update your clones very quickly (SuperDuper! typically takes 10 minutes to update my clone). Disk Utility on the other hand does not have this ability. You would need to do a fresh clone each time you use it, and that takes a great deal longer (depending on your Mac and data 1½-2 hours is normal.

  • TS2446 how do i get back security question and answer i have forgotton

    i just had new computer and want to purchase something from apple store i know my password but cannot remember security question and answer
    How do i get it back i do not want to change password please help me
    thanks

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
    Contact Apple through iTunes Store Support, and explain that you have forgotten your 3 security questions, that you can reset your password, but doing so doesn't reset your security questions.
    Explain that after resetting your password, you are still asked for the answers you have forgotten, before you can gain access to My Apple ID > Manage your account > Password & security, which is where you need to be to change your answers.
    Remember, support will receive hundreds, if not thousands of requests per day, some from people trying it on, others with little explanation and others that are written extremely poorly. Take the time to explain your situation properly, be precise and concise, brief but comprehensive.

  • Syncing iPod to a new iTunes library - back up question

    The PC I used to sync my Daughter's iPod touch to is broken so I need to re sync the iPod to another iTunes library. I have backed it up to iTunes on another PC following instructions on this site but think i now need to restore it so that it syncs with this itunes library, is that correct? If so, I wonder if anyone can tell me if backed up games/apps will retain high scores etc or will she need to start them all over again? Thanks.

    If you backed up the original library properly then a restored copy of the library will be treated as the "home" library for the device and everything will work just as it did before. If you only backed up the media then it will be a "new" library and iTunes will propose wiping the device and loading fresh content onto it. This would wipe out all game progress etc.
    You should be able to:
    Backup the device to the new installation
    Transfer purchases into a newly authorized library
    Recover any other media using third party tools as suggested in this post (if required)
    Restore the device from the backup
    This process should switch the association of the device to the new library, preserving the data and settings in the apps.
    May also be prudent to attempt a backup to iCloud directly from the device before you start... Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > iCloud Backup > On. It won't save any media but it should preserve the general account settings, documents, game progress etc. in case anything goes wrong while you are trying to extract the other data.
    When you get it all fixed, make a backup!
