Backing up a RAID-0 (stripped) to Time Machine

I am trying to backup my bootable RAID-0 with Time Machine.
The RAID consists of 2 disk with 250GB each, building a 500GB volume, filles with about 300GB of data.
When I try to backup, Time Machine complains with an error that the backup-disk (500GB) is too small and the backup would take more than 650GB?!
Has anybody had any luck with backup up such a configuration?

the only reason to use two more 4tb hdd's would be to run raid 10, which is used to make a copy of the raid that can take over if one of the other drives fails, with no down time. you would have to verify your computer or raid card can do that. you could just backup the raid 0 to another hdd, such as an external hdd for backup. either manually copy files over to the external hdd, use a backup program, or file sync program that will only copy over any new files. you can make a backup anytime you get new media and then unplug the external hdd so it doesn't accidentally get deleted etc. then make copies of the project files from the raid0 hdd onto another internal hdd and/or thumb drive for backup as you work. that's just one way of doing things. depending how full your raid 0 is, you might get away with a 4 or 5 tb hdd for backup, and also depending on how long you want to store old projects, you could have several hdds to hold onto old projects for a while...

    Thanks for your response.
I had tried COMMAND+ALT+R which led me to directly to INTERNET RECOVERY via wifi. After 1 hour or so it dropped me at the same point.
I've tried MIGRANT ASSISTANCE as well, it kept on LOOKING FOR OTHER COMPUTERS even though I clicked on TIME MACHINE BACK UP USING EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE
    so what to do now?
P.S. Guys at MacStore were so careless to even listen to me when I asked them about retrieving back up :(

  • I'd like to go back to Maverick but i miss a Time machine save

    Hi everyone.
    Here are my 2 questions:
    - First, I'd like to go back to Maverick but i miss a Time machine save. Is it possible or it would be too complicated? Complicated is another word that i'd never, ever, imagine to use with an Apple product.
    - Second, how can i ask for a refund? I payed much for a high level of service and this is not even a good service
It has been a while since i wrote something in English so sorry for any errors, i'll try to fix them soon.
    Thanks for the help.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message that corresponds to a failed backup. Now
CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD
so that all messages are showning, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.

It's not clear whether you were able to do any backups to this drive at all.  If not, it's probably not formatted properly.  See #5 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions for instructions.
If you did get any successful backups, there may be a problem with the drive, or the backups may be corrupted.  Try to repair the backups, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

  • RAID drive corrupted by Time Machine

Hello, I believe that Time Machine has corrupted on of our RAID systems and would appreciate any help and advice that you can give.
Background: G5 Quad, Sonnet E4P controller, RAID box with port multiplier. There are 5 drives in the box; 4 are in the RAID, the other is an independant disk not associated with the RAID. We were running 10.4 with no problems. After Installing 10.5 (with Time Machine backup to the RAID) we experienced frequent system crashes and went back to 10.4. Everything worked great until rebooting the system and the RAID. At startup, we now get the message "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer". We have 2 RAIDS, one still works fine, the one that was set up with Time Machine is toast.
Disk Utility reports the RAID as Online in the right column, but "disk10" is grayed out in the left column. It reports the 4 drives in the RAID as Offline.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6051806&#6051806
Good News: I was able to see the files in the RAID with a demo version of DataRescue, and all the files are there. Here's the contents sorted by Date, with the most recent items expanded. Lots of modified files related to the hard drive, and at the bottom is VolumeConfitg.plist and .com.apple.timemachine.supported. Any idea how to restore my RAID?
I can purchase this program or one like it, and restore the files from the RAID to another drive... but I'd rather get my RAID back. Thanks!

Here's the drive contents sorted by time, most recently changed files showing first. Thanks!

  • Apple raid, hard drive config & time machine Qs

    hi folks,
just about to jump back onto an apple box (mac pro 8 core)
after a 3 year linux stint, and have a few questions about
apple raid, time machine, and my hard drive setup.
this is the hard-drive setup i am considering:
4 internal drives in 2 pairs of raid0 sets for performance.
i have not yet decided on the capacities & brand or even if
i will be going sata or sas yet. i will be getting the apple
    raid card regardless.
    raid card questions:
as far as i can tell the apple raid card
    will support 2 x raid0 arrays, correct?
it will NOT support 1 sas array simultaneously
    with one sata array, correct?
it will only support 4 drives total, correct?
i would like to put boot and swap on set 1, and my home directories
on set 2. i know having boot on raid0 is risky btw. i also know os x
doesn't by default have a separate swap partition, but more on that
    below.
my backup strategy will be. mirror the boot partition to the stock
320GB drive that i get in the mac pro which will be in an external
enclosure. this will probably be done weekly with a cron script or
one of the tools like SuperDuper i've been hearing about. the external
    drive ideally would be bootable.
    questions about my boot setup:
does the external mirror drive need to be esata to be bootable or can it be
    firewire 800?
is it worth the trouble of making a separate OS swap partition on this
raid set, and would doing so improve or degrade performance?
how smart are tools like SuperDuper at NOT mirroring things like swap?
on my second internal raid set, i would like to have my home directories.
i have read that this isn't too difficult to achieve in os x. i would like
to have time machine back up only my home directories to another external
drive. it will be a time capsule, or much more likely, an OWC Guardian MAXimus
    in hardware raid1.
can time machine be instructed to only back up the home directories?
will i have to fight OS X to achieve any/all of the above?
any comments or advice on the above greatly appreciated, best,
    _c

  • External RAID 0 with multiple Time Machine backups

I have a Macbook Pro (late 2012) and would like to utilize it to its fullest potential. I recently bought a 2TB time capsule, and I have an external WD my passport (2tb usb 3.0). I am a photographer and am starting to delve in HD video editing. I bought an external 2 drive usb 3.0 Raid controller. All my photos are on the WD myPassport and that's were pretty much all of my data is that the macbook accesses. The 128gb ssd that the os and programs reside on has around 30gb left.
I want to transfer all my photos and videos to the external raid enclosure (two 1tb drives) in a raid 0 for quick access of my data over the usb 3.0
I plan on formatting the myPassport and use the time capsule and the myPassport for dual time machine back ups and leave the myPassport at work and bring it home once a week to update the back up.
Does this sound like a reasonable backup solution to my external raid 0? Btw I will be using the WD Red drives in the raid array.

    @FreddieMurry
All my photos are on the WD myPassport and that's were pretty much all of my data is that the macbook accesses.
    1. Mistake number #1 anytime "all of ..." and "are one (a single)...."  are used to describe someones priceless data
You dont need dual TM backups, ....you need a TM backup and a data archive, and a final optical archive (and more if possible)
use your WD HD for your TM and your  2 X 1TB RAID0 for perpetual data (your pics and vids as you indicate and all other vital data) secondary backups.
and third, a routinely connected and removed HD(s) archive stored away in a fireproof vault, box (40$ Walmart) etc.
and fourth optical storage on professional grade DVD media that is not prone to ferromagnetic degradation and rated for 100+ years  (Taiyo Yudun DVD pro-grade blank media or other mfg.)
    explained here:
Methodology to protect your data. Backups vs. Archives. Long-term data protection
Data redundancy (copies) makes all HD crashes inconsequential, an irrelevancy.
Compartmentalize your system (OS) hub backup vs. that of your data hub archives, in so doing any failure in your computer (system [OS], data, computer) becomes quick to recover from!
Never consider any computer a data storage device at any time under any circumstance, rather a data creation, sending, and manipulation device. Anyone who thinks data is safe on any computer, even copied upon multiple partitions is making a mistake that will, without fail, strike.
Never backup your data exclusively upon magnetic hard drives or flash storage, nor consider same since magnetic storage degrades over time, roughly 3-8 years, even under ideal storage conditions.
Burn important data onto multiple copies of professional grade archival DVDs (Taiyo Yuden or likewise) and store them in cool dark fireproof safes, a safety deposit box, or multiple places.
Most importantly know that 2 copies of your data is 1, and 1 is none, and 100 copies stored in one place or building is also the same as none due to fire or natural disasters.

  • Time machine won't back up since I have restored from time machine following hard drive replacement.  I am being told there is not enough space, however the back up is less than the hard drive size

We recently had the hard drive replaced on our Mac as part of Apple's replacement programme.  Prior to sending it off for repair we did a final Time Machine back up, which was completed successfully.  SInce getting the computer back we restored everything from the backup disk using Time Machine, which all worked fine, however now we are having problems with it completing regular backups.  We receive a message each time telling up that the backup disk doesn't have enough space on it.  It is telling us that it needs in the region of 370gb and only has around 30gb available.  The computer hard drive is in the region of 350gb and the hard drive is a 400gb one.  It is almost as if it is not recognising that the data already on the disk is the back up of this computer and is trying to complete a completely separate back up as opposed to just updating the backup already on the disk.
Has anyone else got any experience of this and therefore could give me some hints on what to do.  I am reluctant to wipe the backup drive and start again, however I would prefer not to have to buy another hard drive if I can avoid it as this one is technically big enough
I look forward to getting some responses

Hi, I never use TM myself.
Have you looked through Pondini's extensive TM help site?
    http://Pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Can't imaging something not being covered there.
PS. It's generally recommended a TM drive be at least twice the size of your main drive.

  • How to back up an external hard drive using Time Machine

I have a Macbook. I have iTunes. I have my iTunes folder and contents stored on an external (Lacie) hard drive. I want to be able to back up that external (Lacie) hard drive and my mac using Time Machine to a separate external hard drive. At the moment it is only my mac that is backed up, and not the Lacie.  How can I also back up the Lacie so that only the recently added iTunes content is added? Cheers.

You may consider reading the detail in what third-party clone utilities could
do in regard to a backup clone and then use their utility to update that clone.
Once the copy/clone is made (a bootable backup, btw) the same utility can
be used to update the clone. Not certain how it works, and am a bit behind
on making backup bootable clones of my several Macs as it is. I do a whole
backup clone, though a partial or update supposedly is possible.
SuperDuper or CarbonCopy, I don't remember if one of them or both, do this.
    Good luck in any event!

  • What size should external back-up drive be for use with Time Machine?

I am very new to Macs.
My iMac has a 500GB hard disc - not much on it yet.
I want to back the hard disc up daily and automatically to an external hard drive using Time Machine. So that I could restore everything if the iMac failed.
    1. Does the external hard drive that I buy need to be larger than the iMac's hard disc, e.g 1Tb? Or is 500Gb enough in my case?
    2. Should it be pre-formatted for Mac when I buy it? Or do I have to do this?
    3. Should it use firewire or USB?
    4. Presumably I need to leave the external drive plugged in all the time? Or will this stop the iMac from switching on and off?
I really want the easiest solution possible as I am not very techie and I want the minimum amount of fiddling with it. So I am confused between whether to choose a Western Digital My Book Office edition or Studio edition, 500Gb or 1TB, firewire or USB, or maybe a Lacie?
    Would be grateful for advice.
    Thanks very much.

Welcome to the Apple forums. If you have a 500G external disk, that will work fine for quite a while with hourly, daily and weekly backups, but sooner or later it will fill up, but then it begins to delete weekly backups. The same will happen with whichever size of external disk you buy: sooner or later. . . . Nonetheless, that disk will be fine for most purposes. I have 250G and use a 200G partition for my MacBook Pro and while that was fine, it tends to delete weekly backups so I have about 6 months of backups stored. (I also make other backups of all data).
It may be preformatted, but that is unlikely. Use Disk Utility (in Applications>Utilities) and use MacOS Extended, which is selected in the Partition tab (you do this even if you only use a single partition).
The system works with either Firewire or USB 2..
You do not need to leave it in all the time. If it is connected, it will make the backups, if not, nothing will happen and it will indicate that the next backup will occur when the disk is attached. To disconnect, you would highlight the disk in a Finder panel and press the Eject icon (not while TM is running of course) then disconnect the cable.
I am not able to suggest which disk is best, although my LaCie one has not missed a beat. Others may have a different idea. Try a Google search with the disk manufacturer's name and "problems" or somesuch. No disk is perfect of course.

  • Can I use the same hard drive to back up my photos and also do Time Machine backups?

I bought a 1T external hard drive today for my MacBookPro with the intentions of backing up my iPhoto library, and then deleting it to make more space on my hard drive.
I also tried and failed to install Time Capsule because my Verizon modem won't let Time Capsule run with it unless I use Time Capsule as my wireless.
That said, I want to back up my computer, and even though I copied my iPhoto library already, I have plenty of space to do a Time Machine backup as well.
Is this something I can do? Please let me know. After two hours on the phone with Apple only to learn Time Capsule was a waste of money, I'm hoping I don't need to buy another external HD yet…

If you want to use the drive for both TimeMachine and storage, attach the drive and then open Finder > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.  Choose the new hard drive from the left sidebar, and then in the main panel choose Partition.
Choose the number of partitions to be two.  Click the first partition and change the size if you do not want the default half of the drive.  Name the partition (such as Backups), then accept the default format Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) and the partition table as GUID.  Click Apply and confirm you want to erase the drive.
Then do the same for the second partition, but of course, give it a different name.
    When finished Quit Disk Utility.
Turn ON TimeMachine in System Preferences and direct it to your backup partition.

  • Backing up an External Hard Drive using Time Machine

I have a brand new iMac 21.5" (late 2012) 3TB Time Capsule, and a 1 TB Western Digital Passport external drive. I use the Passport to share files between my iMac and MacAir.
I am using Time Machine to back up all my Apple Computers to Time Capsule.
I have formatted my Passport in Mac OS Extended Journaled, Encrypted.
I have the Passport set up to back up through Time Machine on the iMac.
It seems it backs up the entire Passport every time I hit Back up now onto the Time Capsule. But it only shows NOW as the only available revision in Time Machine.
It seems to be backing up the entire drive each time and not saving revisions. The only revision that is available is the NOW one.
I have disabled the security on the VCD portion of the Passport, it has Western Digital Software on it.
I have had the same issue with the Passport formatted in Mac OS Extended Journaled with no encryption as well. But I really need to passowrd protect the passport since I travel with it constantly in case I lose it.
Any ideas on how to get it to back up to Time Machine properly?

I backed up the iMac and Passport yesterday. It was successful. The issue seem to be incremental backups. It did not backup after my First original backup of the passport. The backups of the iMac seem to be working normal and at ever hour.
Here is a string of a Automatic backup this morning when the computer was "sleeping" with the passport connected. I did change the passport yesterday to Sleep to never before i plugged it in to my iMac using the software on my Mac Air.
