Backing up Lion Mac Pro 3.1  drive

Looking into backing up Lion Mac Pro 3.1  drive / Lion, Recovery HD / disk assistant.
In Mac Pro I have Lion in drive bay 1 (297GB) and Windows 7 in bay 4 (465GB).
I use Windows Image backup to USB external drive partition and have Lion Time machined to second partition therein.
I have an unmounted (spare) 297 GB drive.
Question is: can I occasionally do complete Lion disk utility copy of Bay 1 to (spare) mounted in drive bay 2 which I
would remove and only ever use if Lion drive was damaged? Would it be a bootable duplicate of Lion and Recovery HD?

To get a Recovery HD on your "spare" 297GB drive, I think Apple expected you to use Lion Recovery Disk Assistant. If you have an existing Recovery HD on your Main Drive, this little program can create the semi-hidden partiton and copy the contents of  your existing Recovery HD to another drive, such as an external drive:

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Time Machine should be enough to make a backup of your files. Also, it should back up all folders, so open System Preferences > Time Machine > Options, and make sure that there are no folders included in the excluded items list.
If you want to create a bootable clone of your hard drive, you need to use an app like Carbon Copy Cloner or the Disk Utility's Restore feature > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU7.html

Apple Senior tech lady deleted all my external drive data while sorting out other problem. How can I restore all my photos , music etc back to my Mac Pro?(I am so scared, I haven't connected iPhone to sync! Please help)

It was tele tech. I couldn't open my Page Numbers etc. Frist tech chat idiot - following dumping few things in bin, asked me yo upgrade to Yosemite. But the problem still persists. This morning I was asked to do it via telephone and like yesterday, after wasting 20 min, I was put to this apparent Tech Queen ( my foot!). She eventually decided to reinstall  Yosemite asked me to connect my external drive while I connected to her. She was moving cursor asking me to move files and delete and I followed her like a dummy. It took 3/4 hours and she called me 3 times once the lengthy process was completed. I suspected from the beginng for the fact that why should be asking me to click all my backup from the very beginning! Eventually she said I deleted... Or someone else or may be my children ! It was a blatant lie. I run my small business from home and I was simply staying in front of the Mac whole day! Children were at school. Then she said I must have used another computer! I only have laptop and the iPad. I will talk to their manager first thing in the morning. In the mean time please let me know as to how can I transfer photos, music etc back to my laptop from my Iphone and IPad .? I am will connect to laptop as I am worried the new BLANK iPhoto may supersede iphone/iPad stuff? Will it? Please let me know. I am not a very tech savvy person. My son who could help me, is in Manchester Uni and Inam in London.

How can I recover the NAS back up to put on my new Time Machine.
Talking to Apple Support Adviser was a waste of time on case number 239647273
    Any thoughts or pointers?

Keep the old OS around and just kick the tires and test new OS. Apple has a history and habit of breaking support in things like this.
You can use TimeMachine as one level of backup, and even there there were changes with Lion, I would always recommend foremost backup clones of every volume. And clone (SuperDuper etc) can be stored on something like HP NAS Media Server which also was supporting TimeMachine, iTunes - until Apple made that harder and more their own proprietary format.

Rather than "upgrade" I would clone the system, and do a clean install, then allow Setup Assistant to import your files.

  • How do I back up the Mac Pro with Target Disk Mode?

My Mac Pro's partition has become corrupt, and will not boot. After trying to resolve the issue, it would seem the only solution is to reformat the computer, and start again.
Nonetheless, I would still like to back it up. I have a MacBook Pro, a firewire cable, and an external hard drive connected to my MacBook. The partition is showing on the MacBook. However, Time Machine cannot back it up - It only sees my MacBook's partition.
Is there any program I can use, or heck, anyway with just Mac OS-X on the MacBook I could use to back up the Mac Pro partition?
Also, when I format the Mac Partition, I assume the Windows Partition will also be formatted? The Windows XP partition is working fine at the moment.

to be on the safe side. I would back up both partitions. that being said, if you try to erase the mac partition it shouldn't erase the pc partition. if that fails you could try deleting the mac partition and then re-adding it.
But if the drive is really scrambled you may have to re-partition the whole drive; witch would erase every thing.
You could try using disk utility to copy the drive as a disk image:
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1553 explains how to do this in section "Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility"
if disk utility fails you could try:
you could try carbon copy cloner

  • Is it OK to use USB 2.0 connection for Glyph external drive and Mac Pro as project drive?

Is it OK to use a USB 2.0 connection for Glyph external drive and Mac Pro as project drive? I was told by Sweetwater tech support to use Firewire, but both the FW400 and FW800 connections crash my audio interface software mixer (Presonus' "Universal Control" software).
Both Firewire connections also create a 10 second hang for each Command-Save that I do.
USB 2.0 for the external drive seems to be working so far, but is there some reason I should be wary of using this as my go-to project drive? In other words, I am imagining that there was probably some definite reason that the tech support guy mentioned not to use it. But maybe not. It's a brand new Glyph. In any event, it's nice to have the 10 second hang eliminated, and I was just looking for some advice, since digging into the Presonus software issue could take some time.

If you have a mac pro, why not stick the external HDD inside via one of your many SATA cables & have it run 9 times faster than your USB?
Or stick a HDD CADDY in your mac pro, so you can slot in a full sized 3TB HDD for recording, and when you are done, pull it out & slip it in an external enclosure if you need to take it places?

  • Brtand New Mac Pro Internal Optical Drive Won't Work

Actually, this is a two parter. My new Mac Pro internal optical drive rejects every disk I insert. It won't read anything. Should I get it replaced? Part two: I have an external Sony optical drive which was working up until yesterday. Today, I was going to go through some disks and now THAT drive is rejecting everything. I had it connected via USB and changed it to a 400 to 800 firewire. I tried to read some disks again and still they get rejected. What can I do to correct these problems?

I am having the exact same problem with my mac pro since upgrading to 10.5.7 neither of my drives will read CD or DVD and it states that no burning software was found in the system profiler

  • Mac Pro 2.66 drives in bay 2 and 3 display

I have 3 drives in my Mac Pro
bay 1 main drive OS 10.9.5
    bay 2 ALL my files
bay 3 second set of files
bays 2 and 3 take a lot of time to display on the desktop
    bay 1 - 3 minutes
bays 2 and 3 displays after about 5 to 6 minutes
when I try t open either drives in bay2 or 3
spinning ball and have to cold quit
tried switching drives around in bays same thing
possible BOTH drives are starting to go?
    RD

I now see I switched bays again and the drives came right up, but clicking in and accessing gave me the spinning ball so I cold rebooted and clicked in again and after about 2 minutes the drive contents displayed. At that moment I was going to back up with CCC I got a msg that the disk I'm trying to copy has errors, so I'm waiting for disk utility to finish and hopefully correct.
I'm gonna need another drive, the drive giving me trouble is a Seagate, it's not the boot drive mind you it's the drive with all my files and never had problems with these drives before, should I get another Seagate?
    anybody?

  • My WD Mybook Live has crashed with all my Itunes info on it. How can I retrieve it back on my Mac Pro

    Hello,
I noticed that my My Book Live is not shown on my Mac Pro Disk Utilities. I checked the drive it is powered on and the Network light is flashing. But no other Pc in my House has access to it. The problem is that iCloud does not copy all my songs to the cloud, and now  since the file has failed, i can no longer access
it , so the rest of my songs are now in limbo. I took the drive out of the enclosure and installed it inside my Mac Pro, but upon startup it said there is a drive that is not compatible, to please remove it. I purchased Distk tools Pro and it does not see the drive. Please can someone help me get my data back?

  • Mac Pro Bootcamp WIFI-driver immunity

So. Apparently OS X 10.10.1 and Windows 8.1 are fighting a war over my Network and Bluetooth Device (Broadcom) in my Mac Pro (late 2013). It's really the strangest thing. I have looked everywhere, tried everything and I still have no idea what's happening. Maybe you guys know what it could be.
I have installed Windows 8.1 on my Mac Pro with Bootcamp, installed the latest Bootcamp Drivers (via Bootcamp) and Windows seems to work just fine! After a reboot into Mac OS X 10.10.1 - it took quite some time to connect to our WIFI - and a reboot back into Windows (pressing alt at start up) Windows could not connect to our WIFI Network. The network showed up in the available networks list, but when i tried to connect to it, it just tried to connect for about 20 seconds and then promoting an "windows can't connect to that WIFI..." error. More over it only found something like 4 available networks, where there normally are about 40 (I live in crowded area).
So after some research i managed to uninstall the current version of the network card driver and installed an older one (downloaded from the Broadcom Homepage I think) and Windows suddenly saw all the other 40 networks and could also connect to our WIFI again. Problem solved I thought.
So after another boot into MacOSX and back into Windows the same thing happened AGAIN! Only saw something like 3-4 other Networks and couldn't connect to our WIFI.
And here comes the funny part. I found jet another (older bootcamp) driver for the network adapter, managed to install that driver and (ijeey) it worked. Windows suddenly saw all the other 40 networks and could also connect to our WIFI again.
So after ANOTHER boot into OS X (this time my bluetooth mouse froze while booting and I had to cold restart the Mac Pro twice! - but then it worked!) back into Windows the same thing happened AGAIN!
Since then I have installed and uninstalled maybe 4 different drivers and it's like my mac becomes immune to each new driver after I reboot into OS X and back into Windows. So each time I have to install a new (different than before) driver to be able to connect to our WIFI. And I'm slowly running out of drivers.
    Need help. Any thoughts?

On the OSX side, can you look at About This Mac -> System Report -> WiFI and Bluetooth, which will look similar to the following?

  • Mac Pro External eSATA Drive

I am looking for a 2TB external hard drive for my Mac Pro (Quad Core 3GHz) and have a question. The Mac Pro has a 500 GB internal boot drive and three internal 500 GB drives RAIDed into a single 1.5TB drive. I would use an external 2TB drive for backing up the 1.5TB daily with Apple's Backup and will use it for Time Machine when I install Leopard. The computer is used primarily for Final Cut Pro Studio.
Costco has a Western Digital external 2TB drive with Fire wire 800 (800mb/s) for $600 and a Western Digital external 1TB drive with eSATA (3000mb/s) for $300. Either way it's $600 for 2 TB. I would need to purchase an eSATA Extender Cable to utilize the two extra SATA ports found on the Mac Pro's logic board for $25.
*The question is*: Could I connect two of the 1TB eSATA drives with the eSATA Extender Cable and make them a single 2TB RAID with Apple's Disk Utility... and would you recommend doing that over getting the 2TB drive which is 1/4 the speed and the same price?
Please see the details below and thank you for your help. I asked the Geniuses at three different Apple Stores and got 3 different answers.

  • Loud fan noise on mountain lion, Mac Pro early 2008

    Hi there,
I've recently installed mountain lion 10.8.5 lon my Mac Pro , early 2008, 2,8 GHz, 24 gb ram, 2x ATI Radeon 2800 XT.
To give it a clean shot i clean installed it on a sep. Partition, no upgrade from my previous Snow Leopard.
The Machine usually works quiet, i've measured via Isat Menu:
    exhaust fan: 681 rpm
    HD/expansion: 1100 rpm
After running Mointain Lion, latest update version, i get a much louder fan noise than in snow leopard:
    exhaust fan: 845-950 rpm
    HD/expansion: 1500 - 1800 rpm
The activity monitor shows no significant CPU usage, only the kernal has over 90 threads constantly running.
I've heard that this is a known issue but it's never been resolved. SMC and PRAM reset did not work at all.
when i go back to snow leopard everything gets back to normal. Yosemite is even harder on fan noise than mountain lion
so i've rolled back to mountain lion.
    Any idea ?
    dezzo

no one here with the same problem on an early 2008 Mac Pro ?

  • Back up of mac pro?

What external equipment can be used to back up mac pro.  Like a case that has hot swappable hard drives or ssds. Powered by Thunderbolt.
    Curt Ewing

For the next Mac Pro?  or current?
OS X is fussy  about ejecting a drive safely first but Firewire, USB (2 and 3) as well as some eSATA  (depends on the host controller).
    Most don't hot swap SSDs.
There are drive docking stations for USB2/3 and eSATA.
Watch out for drives with their own bus powered.
And seeing how you want Thunderbolt, my guess is you don't have a Mac Pro but rather a MacBook Pro.

  • Wake from sleep OS X Lion - Mac Pro 2008

Sorry to post another question about sleep but I cant find my answer searching through the other questions. When my mac pro went to sleep on snow leopard, all was fine.
Since I've upgraded to Lion im having a problem, waited for the first patches and im still having a problem.
When i try to wake from sleep (clicking the mouse or hitting a key on the keyboard). The Mac Pro will start to wake, send the fan spinning at full pelt. If left to its own, after about a minute it will just go back to sleep and fail to wake.
There was a solution to this I found. When it starts to wake, I hit a key for the 2nd time and it wakes up fine. So its taking 2 inputs to wake correctly.
This is naturally causing me problems for the wake for ethernet access required for "back to my mac". The machine wont wake without the 2nd input.
suggestions? and yes i put the hard disks to sleep but i cant see this being anything to do with the problem. As my current solution would suggest its not them.

Well nobody came up with a solution for me. So i thought I'd give it a go and clean it. I mean proper clean it, i got the mac tech docs of a torrent site and dismantled the thing. Took the graphics card out and took it apart, cleaned and dusted the hink sinks etc.. Did the same with the towers fan units (which i wouldn't recommened to anybody not confident with thier hands. Vacumed out what ever i could (i don't own a compressor but would have loved one for this job). Then put it all back together again.
All seems to working fine now. So what seemed like a problem with software was linked to the hardware starting up it would appear.
So i also did more more detailed liistening to the noise and it seemed to be coming from the graphics card more than the main tower fans (Nvidia 8800GT). I would advise cleaning the dust out of your machine if anybody has a simular problem.
    hope this helps somebody

  • Dual boot Tiger on SL vs Lion Mac Pro?

My 2004 Power Mac G5 (running Tiger) is getting old and cranky (frequent fan cycling, failed FW800 port, etc.). It still works but I know a replacement is in the near future. The problem is I have one critical program that runs properly only in Tiger. (Take my word for it.)
    My questions:
    1. If I were to buy a new Mac Pro today (with Snow Leopard), I understand that I could create a dual boot Mac Pro with Tiger on a partitioned or dedicated drive (internal or external). Assuming this is true, are there any issues of which I should be aware when creating a dual boot Tiger Mac on a Snow Leopard machine?
    2. Is there a good reason to believe that a Lion-equipped Mac Pro (presumed to be shipping later this year) will (or will not) support dual booting with a Tiger drive or partition? I realize we can't know for sure until these machines come out, but perhaps someone has some insights here.
Ultimately my question is, "For the purposes of creating a dual boot Mac with Tiger, should I buy the current Mac Pro with Snow Leopard now (while it is still available) or will it be safe to wait until the new Mac Pros (with Lion) come out?"

you would need to find an earlier MacPro1,1 or 2,1 from 2006-7 to be able to boot Tiger. Minimum builds means new hardware will not boot from older versions of OS X.
    Mac OS X build
You can find those Mac Pros for under $1K and they can run 10.4.7 thru 10.7.
Some even upgrade them with newest graphics card but then that limits it to 10.6.5+ and the old cards are dying and hard to find and don't really support 10.6.8 and beyond.
A new Mac before Lion ships makes sense unless you want to wait to see if there is a new Mac Pro in the pipeline but that would mean your software would need to run under 10.7 and could pose problems to even CS4/5 and other popular apps.
Too bad you can run 10.4 as if it was "Classic OS" the way OS 9 use to be, or in a standard VM and run other versions of OS X too.
    Pick up a spare G5.
List WHAT it is that you need to run
