Backing up two hard drives

I was using Time Machine to back up the hard drive on my desk top and to back up an external hard drive that contains all of my video work. I erased the hard drive containing the backups and excluded all other hard drives except for the hard drive on the desk top (Hard Drive A) and the one with my video stuffs (Hard Drive B). Before, A & B would show up on the external containing the backups. But now, it looks like only A is showing up. I did a rough calculation and it looks like the initial backup included both hard drives. Why aren't the two hard drives showing up separately?

They should, but it depends on how you get into TM and whether you can navigate once you're there.

As long as it's formatted for a Mac, yes.
Once it's installed, running, and formatted, go to +System Preferences > Time Machine > Options.+ If it's listed in the exclusions box, just select it and click the minus sign at the bottom.
Note that Time Machine usually requires 2-3 times the space of the data it's backing-up, to be able to keep a reasonable "depth" of backups for you.

As john noted, eventually that external is probably not going to be big enough, but it certainly is for now. The HD just needs enough capacity to cover the amount of data on your internal HD, not the internal HD's total capacity.
Format/partition the external as follows and you should be set to go:
1. Connect the external HD to the MBP.
2. Open Disk Utility on the MBP.
3. Select the external HD in the left pane.
4. Click on the Erase tab.
5. Choose the Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
NOTE: if you want to zero the HD (which I always think is a good idea, but does take time), click on Security Options, click the button for Zero Out Data, click OK. The larger the HD, the longer this will take, in some cases several hours.
6. Click on Erase and wait for the entire process to finish.
7. Click the Partition tab.
8. Click on Volume Scheme: and choose the number of partitions (just one in this situation).
9. Click on the Options button (located underneath the Volume Scheme pane) and select GUID.
10. Click Apply.
11. Quit Disk Utility.
Backup your internal to the external. What application are you using to backup with? I highly recommend both SuperDuper! and CarbonCopyCloner.

How can I split a backup on two hard drives with Time Machine ?

Back-up of my Imac with time machine is 1,3 TB. I have two 1 TB external hard drives but even if I had both as available in Time machine, it seems it doesn't allow to split the backup between the two hard drives. Any way to resolve this without buying another hard drive with more space?

You cannot directly split a backup. Your only option would be to open the TimeMachine preferences from System Prefs. and add things to the exclusion list for one of the backups. Then, when you go to do the other backup you would reverse the process and add everything else to the exclusion list and remove the things you had on there in the first place.
Seems fairly intensive though when you could just go and buy a 2 or 3TB external drive and do it all in one...Black Friday is coming up

Well, yes, data does get corrupted sometimes.
The trick is finding what data.
By 'cleaned' are you therefor meaning that the drive has been erased and the system re-installed?
Because that's the quickest way to deal with such a situation.
Back up the system first of course,
Add back 3rd party apps one at a time in case one of them is causing the problem.

I'd make a backup of your important stuff before cloning the entire disk.
Carbon Copy Cloner will copy your startup drive to an external firewire drive. You can boot from the external drive to verify that you have a good clone. When you upgrade your existing startup drive, you can at any time boot from your external drive and go back to your existing system.

Two hard drives connected to Airport Extreme. How to include one of them in TimeMachine Backup and use other disc as Time Machine backup disc?

the title says it all. I've got an airport extreme and two hard drives connected to it. My idea was to use one as my additional storage (say DISC STORAGE) and the other one as my backup drive (say DISC BACKUP). I would like to backup my mac AND DISC STORAGE together to DISC BACKUP using time machine. My mac has 256 GB HDD, DISC STORAGE is 1 TB big, DISC BACKUP 2 TB. So there are no space issues.
Problem: DISC STORAGE is not included in Time Machine's backup to DISC BACKUP. At the moment, only the mac is backed up to DISC BACKUP.
Does anybody know if and how I can include DISC STORAGE in the backup process?
By the way, DISC STORAGE is not listed in the "exclude from backup" list in Time Machine.

Unforrtunately, Time Machine cannot backup from a network drive to another drive. Time Machine will only backup a Mac and a drive that is directly attached to the Mac, via USB or FireWire.
You will need to use an application like Carbon Copy Cloner or SupoerDuper to be able to backup from DISC BACKUP to DISC STORAGE.

Time Machine Back Up 3rd Hard Drive to 4th Hard Drive

I have a third internal hard drive that I want to back up to a fourth internal hard. I already have my Time Machine backing up my first hard drive (with the OS) to the second hard drive. I can't figure out how to separate the "back ups" out. Just to be clear: the date on hard drive three will be different from hard drive one and two, and have to backed up to hard drive four exclusively. Cheers, mate

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
Lyssa is correct.
TM can back-up multiple drives/partitions, and each source volume is shown separately in the TM interface, but it's destination must be a single volume. It is possible, of course, for that single volume to be a concatenated Raid set, but that doesn't seem to be what you want.
CCC can do this, however. It's donationware, so you can try it out free (but do send some $$ if you keep it, so they can keep it up to date). I think SD can do it also, but you'll need the paid version (about $30 I think) for it to do updates instead of replacements.
You'll probably want to continue with TM on your OSX drive, as it's incremental backups of many files and folders are much faster than either CCC's or SD's will be.
Either is available via Google, VersionTracker.com, or MacUpdate.com.

Two hard drive icons on my desktop, would like to have only one...

Hello everyone, I recently got a PowerMac G5 (I think it's a 2.3 GHz). It came with a hard drive inserted 'Untitled', which came from my old 1.6 GHz G5. On the desktop though, I get two hard drive icons, my main start up drive called 'Untitled', and another one called 'Spare'. I was told that my G5 has only one drive inserted 'Untitled', so I'm trying to either get rid of 'Spare', or merge it somehow into 'Untitled'. Under the Volumes folder, I was not really able to get rid of it, is this something to do with Disk Utility?
BDAqua - under Get Info, when I was on Leopard, I tried changing a User Permissions category called 'Everybody' from Read Only to Read and Write. Upon restart two days later, Leopard would not start up (loads of writing on the screen, with the Mac power button, asking me to restart). To cut a long story, I am now back on Tiger lol (Leopard issues for another discussion lol), so now I dare not play with anything which says Read Only, especially when it's probably not even necessary. I am writing this from the library, so don't know what exactly it says in Get Info - User Permissions for either drive at the moment. If this is relevant, I can have a look later and post back, I'll also verify permissions in Disk Utility for both drives, but I think they are fine. Actually, when I was on Leopard, my 'Untitled' drive took ages to verify permissions, and always loads of writing appeared! Now that I'm on Tiger, the other day when I verified Disk Permissions, it was quick and fine!

Hi BDAqua, sorry I should have just opened it in the first place! I don't know why that man told me there was only one hard drive inside, perhaps a misunderstanding.
It seems that there are actually two hard drives inside, one in A, and one in B (see photo)! So, if this is the case, I don't have a problem with the two hard drive icons.
I guess if a G5 shows two hard drives on the desktop, then there's two hard drives in the machine!

Back Up OSX Hard Drive - Best Practice?

I have usually used Carbon Copy Cloner for backing up my mac hard drives to an external, but would really like some expert opinions on the current best method before proceeding. I have done one backup already using CCC, and would like to keep that backup up-to-date with regular backups. TIA for ny advice.

You need to use Super Duper's Smart Update to keep Super Duper up to date, and Time Machine to keep Time Machine up to date. They are totally separate, and need to be updated separately.
You can, however, use the same external hard drive for both, but each one needs to be in a separate partition, or volume, so that one does not ever overwrite the other. The clone volume should be the same size as the internal drive. The Time Machine volume should be much larger, as it will also contain past information as well as current information.
One think you might find useful is to give each volume a name, such as "Super Duper Clone" and "Time Machine" so that they are clearly different. You could even give each one a different icon:

How often you back up will depend on what you do and how often you need to back up. Often when I am working, I connect Time Machine, and it will back up once every hour. However, I can also order it to back up immediately, which I often do if I finish something and don't want to wait until the next scheduled backup. I don't recall if Super Duper has the same ability, as it is not something I use. Generally I do a Super Duper backup whenever I have something new I need to back up. I ALWAYS back up just before downloading or updating software. If something horrible happens with the new software, then it is easy to revert by cloning back onto your hard drive.
This may be more paranoid than is necessary, but I actually have 2 clones on 2 drives. The primary clone is the one I keep up to date. The secondary one I only update prior to installing new software or leaving on a trip. The primary clone is the one I travel with. The secondary clone and the Time Machine stay at home, usually locked up in the safe. If the worst happens, and someone steals my MBP and portable drive, I still have a recent backup of my data safe and sound at home. So far nothing like that has ever happened to me, but I did read not too long ago where someone's MBP was stolen along with 2 external drives which had all his work on them.
You can use two separate drives, or one drive with 2 separate partitions if you want to use both Super Duper and Time Machine. If you decide on separate drives, You could get a portable FireWire Drive for Super Duper and carry it with you, and always have your bootable backup along. For Time Machine, a larger desktop drive might be more appropriate.

Do I still need two hard drives for video editing today?

I have heard time and time again that editors should use two hard drives when editing in Final Cut Pro, it was even written in part of the Final Cut Pro 7 user manual. One was used for the system and Final Cut Pro software and the other was used for storing video.
Is this still true with the newer SSDs available today? Since they do not use a rotating disk, can't my video and Final Cut Pro X work to maximum performance? Or is it still a bad idea to have your video and software on the same drive?
I would be curious to what some have to say and thank you in advance for your help.

Will it work on one drive ?.. in short Yes. Will it work well when I start doing multiclips with lost of angles and a separate track all being ingressed from HDV and wav? .. I suspect not so well .. You see the bottom line is that you are correct in so far as SSD's have no moving parts but the input/out speed (I/O) is not all that fantastic. Multiple video streams when doing multicam (for example) will cause a huge data quantity needed at fast speeds to be shipped back and forth .. SSD's are fast at boot up but after that the there is not all that between them and ESATAII internal drives (I have four ESATAII in my Mac Pro)..
Best practice advice is to have a fast separate drive, preferably connected via Thunderbolt or FW800. The whole thing just works more efficiently and - better. All in all I would say yes if you can afford it and are going to be doing lots of editing which gets more advanced you will not regret the second drive investment.

How to get two hard drives to be seen on MBP desktop. I need to be able to see 2 hds both 3 tb to transfer data between them. This is easy in windows just open two instances, one for eac hard drive. TIA robbo

am trying to back up and transfer data between two hard drives but cant get up twp Hd icons at the same time. It is so easy in windows but cant seem to do it in MBPro. Even Dick Smith couldnt help me today.

Do the HD icons appear on your Desktop?
If not, adjust your Finder preferences:
Also check "Hard Disks" if you want your internal HD to appear on the Desktop.
Open one, open the other, should be no problem.

For those of you using two hard drives..........

I have two hard drives, and really want to set them up properly so that logic is running on the main drive, and the secondary drive is for audio/samples etc. So for those of you that have done this, what is the best way? Specifically -
1. For the EXS24- do BOTH the instruments and samples folder need to go on the secondary drive?
2. If you've already been using one drive for everything, how do you re-train logic to see the exs/audio folders on the secondary drive? Is it just a matter of moving them and then redirecting logic when it can't find the files?
Your input on the best way to utilize two drives is most appreciated - what has worked for you, and what hasn't.

Leave the instruments folder where it is, and put your samples folder on the external drive.
You can alias the instruments folder to whereever you want, but you don't really get any performance advantages doing so.

Two things to note - you don't need to do anything. When the EXS24 loads an instrument, if the samples are not at the location specified in the instrument, it will search for them, and when it finds them, it will write the new location back to the instrument so next time it won't have to search.
So, if you've moved your sample folders, the first time you access an instrument it will take some time to load while Logic hunts for the samples. Subsequent loads of that instrument will be as fast as ever.
Now, you can use the Project Manager (or Redmatica's EXSManager) to do this relinking for you across multiple instruments or your whole library.
In the PM, do an expanded scan. Then, select your instruments, and choose the "resolve samples" function - Logic will relink instruments with their samples and update the instrument files with the new locations. This can take some time with a big library.

Yes, but if you move the "original" data on your iMac to the Time Capsule....then the "original" data is now on the Time Capsule disk.
When...not if...the Time Capsule disk has a problem, you have no backups for this data.
Perhaps a much safer plan might be to add an external hard drive attached directly to your iMac. Then, move the data to that drive from the iMac.
Now, Time Machine will back up both your iMac and the external hard drive so you have "originals" on one drive and backups on another. Would that plan work for you?

HT1386 Ever since I had to replace my PC hard drive, my outlook contacts and calendar no longer sync. It acts like it's syncing, but it isn't. I now have two hard drives - c and g, but I'm pretty sure the Outlook data is still on c. Any other ideas?

Hello - I just had to replace the hard drive on my pc, and now my Outlook calendar and contacts won't sync to my iphone 5s. I ended up getting two hard drives (C and G), so I'm afraid that might have something to do with it - although I'm pretty sure Outlook files still live in the normal place on C. Itunes sync acts as if it's working, but nothing changes on my phone. Any ideas? Thanks!!
