Backlighting stopped working

My late 2008, MBP 15's keys will not backlight.  I get a buster sign when I try to use the keyboard brightness key.  Any suggestions?

take it in for repair or get a new one.

  • Iphone 3GS backlight stopped working.

    I've had my phone for 11 months now (Lucky me almost lost warranty ) and recently it has started this thing where the backlight will quit working for a bit, but sooner or later it starts working again. But unfortunately this time whenever the backlight went out, it stayed out. I cannot get the backlight on my phone to turn back on. I've restarted my phone holding home and unlock like 10 times, i've even restored my iphone through itunes and it didn't fix it. I also tried going into setting and turning up the brightness.
    Please help!
    If i can't find a solution i'm probably just going to run up to my nearest apple store, but i've read alot of threads of people fixing this on there own, but i don't have a clue and i've tried all their solutions.

    Take it to your local Apple Store. If restoring it didn't work it's hardware.
    Just make sure you sync it first, just in case they need to replace the phone.

  • [Solved] Backlight stopped working after upgrade

    Hi,
    I've been using Arch for a couple months now, and I had set up the backlight by adding the acpi_backlight=vendor kernel paramter.
    I recently upgraded my system, and everything seems to be working, but now the backlight is set to some default value and doesn't change. My /etc/default/grub still has the kernel parameter in it.
    $ xbacklight
    100.000000
    $ xbacklight -set 50
    $ xbacklight
    100.000000
    Here is the kernel I've upgraded to:
    $ uname -a
    Linux choochootrain 3.8.5-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Fri Mar 29 19:18:14 CET 2013 x86_64 GNU/Linux
    I don't know much about mkinitcpio.conf, but upgrading the kernel didn't change any of the modules being loaded..
    Does anyone have any idea what else could be causing this? Let me know what other information would be useful here!

    I upgraded from 3.6.9.1 -> 3.8.5.1, and I have an integrated Intel video card
    $ lspci -v | grep VGA
    00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller (rev 09) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
    I tried removing the acpi_backlight parameter, but no luck.
    My laptop is a Toshiba Portege z930, so there are vendor specific entries in /sys
    $ ls /sys/class/backlight
    acpi_video0 intel_backlight toshiba
    which I assume is why the original acpi_backlight=vendor worked.
    Do you think this could be a kernel specific issue? I may end up downgrading until I can resolve this, as the backlight is blindingly bright right now

  • IPod Backlight stopped working.

    I turned my iPod Touch on today and the backlight was off. I checked it in settings and it was halfway up like it normally is, so I tried adjusting it and nothing happens. How do I fix this?

    Yeah same thing happened to me. It worked fine one day and then three hours later when I went to use it the backlight wouldn't come on. I tried adjusting the brightness and turning it off and back on but it never worked. Everything works okay I just need a strong light to read the screen. PLEASE HELP!!!

  • My backlight stopped working

    I woke up this morning and I couldn't barely see anything on my screen. I turned on the light and I could kind of see and I went to go check the backlight. My ipod touch is working fine but the backlight refuses to cooperate...

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
    Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
    least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
    If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • MacBook Pro Keyboard Function Keys & Backlight Stopped Working

    This is a repost of an older thread, however i am having the same exact problem and i know i am not the only one.
    Origionally posted by FIDO2010 -
    "Problem: The keyboard function keys (i.e. screen brightness, audio volume etc.) and backlight no longer work in Windows 7 (64-Bit) running Boot Camp 3.x. I also had the identical problem with Windows Vista (64-Bit) running Boot Camp 2.1.
    Oddity: When I first installed Windows 7 and Boot Camp 3.x (same with Vista and Boot Camp 2.1), the keyboard and backlighting worked perfectly for about 3 Shut-Down/Re-Starts.
    Points of Interest: I use a Logitech MX Revolution 2.4GHZ mouse and a Microsoft Blue Tooth Presenter Mouse 8000 with this machine. When I had this problem running Vista 64-Bit and Boot Camp 2.1, I assumed the problem was created by installing the drivers for these mice (suspecting that the mouse drivers over-wrote the Apple keyboard driver); however, I installed NO mouse drivers when I deleted the Vista 64 Boot Camp partician and created the "fresh" Windows 7 (64-bit) / Boot Camp 3.x partician.
    I have tried the obvious of un-installing/re-installing Boot Camp, running the Boot Camp driver in repair mode, and manually replacing the keyboard driver itself. None of which have worked.
    Solutions?"
    Any insight will be greatly appreciated. this issue is driving me crazy. Must have installed windows a good 30-40 times in the past couple months. thank you

    As you all are probably well aware, this exact problem has been asked on a countless number of discussion boards and each is answered with a different "solution." Quotation marks are necessary because the solutions suggested work for some users but don't work for others. So, in a way, I offer those who read this reply this same disclaimer. The following solution worked for me (for now!) but it may not work for you.
    Just like those other users, my volume and brightness function keys on my Macbook refused to work after installing the latest Bootcamp updates and after restarting Windows 'x' amount of times. In addition, trackpad scrolling, which worked great after one of the updates, also did not respond.
    Here's what I did to get them working again, and it's rather simple. Find the Bootcamp application in Windows. Mine was housed in Program Files but yours may located be somewhere differently. Right-click the application and select Open. In my case the screen went black and the resolution downgraded to 800x600 or lower when the images on the screen returned so keep this in mind if or when you attempt this. The screen is significantly cropped so you may have trouble navigating to the Control Panel to fix the resolution to your liking. Anyway, now my brightness and volume function keys and trackpad scrolling work properly.
    I should mention one or two more bits of information before I sign off. To start, I cannot say if this trick continues working after restarting Windows. Also, I do not know if this process is something you have to perform everytime you run Windows. In any case, let the world know if this or any other solution fixes this stated problem for you.

  • Ipod Nana 3G backlight stopped working

    I have adjusted my brightness, made sure it was turned on in settings, and even ran the 4Rs. Still no light. Anyone know of a quick fix before I call Apple and get it repaired?

  • T400 Backlight Not Working

    I got a Lenovo T400 and the backlight stopped working (LED). Anyone have any ideas?

    I am having a weird problem where every 1/8 or so LEDs is not working - it looks like a bad solder joint deal.  At the bottom of my screen I get a row of dark shadows that are evenly spaced apart.  I took this to a shop to fix a year ago, but now it's back.  If i pinch the lower right hand corner of the screen, the shadows will temporarily go away.
    My computer is out of warrenty, should I just go ahead and open it up with a solder gun?
    Also, the pics you have of the screen would be great, so I can see what I'm looking for.

  • Backlight keyboard stopped working after updating to snow leopard

    Hi I have a late 2008 macbook pro. When I got the laptop it had 10.5.8 on it and the keyboard backlight was working fine. I dimmed it all the way down to save battery life. Later on I installed 10.6.2 then did an update to 10.6.5. I don't know where it stopped working allong the way but the keyboard backlight no longer works.
    I can turn it up using the f keys. It will increase and decrease. There is not a circle with a line through it like I have read that other users have had when their backlight is not working properly.
    I can increase it and decrease it. The light never comes on. I have installed that program that lets you control the backlight by putting it in the taskbar, that doesnt fix it. I called apple and reset the SMC by taking the battery out and holding the power button down for 5 seconds then putting the battery back in and turning it back on. That did not fix it. I also asked if there was some preference files that we could throw away to maybe reset it. We tossed about 5 files and that didnt fix it - sorry I cant remember the files. I did a fresh install of snow leopard but i didnt go past the "would you like to bring back your files" part of the install.
    Can someone help me? The caps lock button lights up. I dont know if that matters. Please help me fix the backlight on my keyboard. I really dont want to install 10.5.8 again just to see if the light comes back on or not. Is there a bug in snow leopard that messes up my macbook? help!

    maybe its fried ? could be just bad luck when you were doing the update ?
    Ridiculous!
    To the OP:
    I'd recommend doing a SMC reset, if that doesn't take care of it do a PRAM reset. The instructions are:
    _SMC RESET_
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
    • Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    • Release the power button.
    • Attach the computers power cable.
    • Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    _PRAM RESET_
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    • Turn on the computer.
    • Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    • Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    • Release the keys.

  • My macbook air stopped working suddenly and started beeping no backlight ...just beeping

    my macbook air stopped working...and started beeping...how do I recover...no backlight ....just beeping

    three beeps in a row?  That indicates the RAM is bad on the logic board.
    verify the scheme of the beeps and report back.
    3 beeps = RAM is bad
    4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
    5 beeps = processor is not usable
