  • Error 8062 when I try to copy or move files on my macbook: "This operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -8062)". Can even not install new software now!!

Since a few days when I try to copy or move files on my macbook, I often get an error message saying "This operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occured (error code -8062)". And then it just quits the copy or move.
I searched a lot on the internet, but only found solutions for cases you cannot empty the trash due to this issue.
I tried those solutions for my trash and that helped after some trying.
However, I still have the problem with copying and moving files.
I even cannot install new software now, as it has to copy itself to the programs-directory, and gives the same error-message.
    Who can help me??
Cannot seem to find any info on it on the support-forums or elsewhere.
    My user-account is administrator, I use a 13" Macbook Aluminium (Late 2008). Mac OS X 10.6.8 CPU 2Ghz Intel Core Duo, RAM: 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3.
Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Tips I received so far (thanks to A-Mac via Twitter http://www.a-mac.nl and Remco Kalf http://www.remcokalf.nl/)
    - make sure you have at least 10% of your harddisk in free space (I had only 5%).
    - do a PRAM-reset (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379)
    - perform a hardware test (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509)
    - make a complete backup (with for example Carbone Clone Copier, see http://www.bombich.com/)
    - after complete backup: use diskwarrior (boot from Diskwarrior DVD, first perform diagnostics, then perform "Rebuild" which rebuilds your file directory).
So far I only cleared up some space on my HD, and already the problem occurs less.
Still, I will go through the other tips too.

  • The operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50)

I have a Seagate Central 3tb NAS (latest firmware) attached to my wireless router (Netgear wndr3400v3).  I have a late 2011 macbook pro with Yosemite on it.  When I go through finder to use my NAS I keep getting "The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50)" .  I only get it when I am trying to copy a big folder with other folders and files with in.   I can copy a single file or create folders.  If i try to copy a folder with 100 pics in it then I get the error.  I can create the folder on the NAS and select all 100 files.  When I drag them to the NAS, then they copy with no problems.  Every so often my time machine has an error and says that it has to create a new backup. I read some where to make sure that "put hard disk to sleep when possible" should be selected in the energy saver in preferences.  Still no luck.  A can also drag any file from the NAS back to my laptop or view them from the NAS with no problems.
Thanks for any help in advance.

    Hi there,
Well I have exactly the same problem! Recently I reset my WD My book White light (2 x 1TB RAID disk), due to the fact that the disk ran full because of TimeMachine.
I reset the disk, and now I can only write some files to it, but most give this error code.
I wrote to WD, but they could not give an answer.
Q: did you update the firmware? Maybe that is causing the problem, in that it is maybe not consistant in the filesystem?

  • HT201250 i'm getting message: can't be opened because you don't have permission to see its contents. and he operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -8003).

I took my computer in to have the Backup restored onto my computer after having a new harddrive put onto my 1year 1/2 old MacBook Pro. When i got it home there was a new User that i had to logout of to getting into my normal user. Don't know why this was, just figured the Mac guys that installed my backup did this for some odd reason. Today i could not open any of my files in the backup on the time machine. All the folder had line going thought them and when i clicked on them I revieved this message: can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents. After talking with that same mac store. I decided to just delete all the files out of the time machine as it was just put back on my computer and i have everything i need. Hours later when i tried to empty the trash i got this messsage: the operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -8003).
Any advise how to fix my problem?
    thanks in advance

While you see a single trash can, in reality there are trash folders on each mounted volume.  I don't use TM but what you are describing implies that a TM drive is no different with the way trash is treated.  So when the TM is unmounted the trash folder on there is gone and thus the trash looks empty.  Remount the drive, the trash folder on it now causes the trashcan to look like something is in it.
If TrashIt! could not remove the file, I'm sorry, you will need to use the terminal.  We can do this one step at a time so you only have to copy/paste the lines into terminal (except the first time).  So launch Terminal (in utilities).  You might want to make the window that is shown a bit larger with the grow box since it's pretty small.
This first line is the only exception to the copy/pasting since you have to enter some information.
    sudo ls -laR /Volumes/your-TM-volume-name/.Trashes
where your-TM-volume-name is the name of your TM volume.  That's the part you have to fill in since I don't know it.
When you hit return the sudo in that command will cause a prompt for your admin password.  Enter it and hit return again.  Note the password will not be shown as you type it.  Post the results so I can tell you what to do next.
Note this ls command is not doing anything but listing the files in the TM's .Trashes folder.  Remember I said each drive has it's own trash folder.  .Trashes is it.

I get this message "The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50)" when I try and add or delete any files to my Time Capsule.  It just started happening a week ago.

I would get an external drive today and copy all your stuff off the TC.. forget trying to load more onto it. There is a good chance after 3years (A 2TB should be only about 2years tops), the disk or the TC itself is on the way out. Do it immediately. If TM is also failing to backup you need to recognise symtoms of impending doom.
Unfortunately the error messages are archane and it is hard to discover their meaning.
You also cannot verify a network drive.. you can verify the TM sparsebundle though so do that.
    A5. http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Reboot the whole network from off.. certainly if you run later OS it can simply lose the drive..
If you still fail to be able to copy to the TC.. then get that external and copy off it. Tell us if you can do that.

  • Unexpected Error Occurred (error code -600) after Leopard Installation

Installed Leopard for the second time.
Everything seems to work fine, but after opening and then closing Mail, I'm unable to open it via the dock. Tried to open by selecting from the applications menu, and get the following message:
The operation could not be completed.
An unexpected error occurred (error code -600)
Same thing with Backup, Parallels too.
Shutdown behavior is odd. From the apple icon, shutdown doesn't work, everything goes away on the desktop, then the spinning wheel (not beach ball), then nothing. Have to power off to quit, can't be good for the hardware.
Any suggestions, or am I doomed to a clean install and reinstalling all of my applications? Thankfully I have a drive backed up with SuperDuper with 10.4!
    Thanks for the help.

OK, I've got ContentBarrier X4 installed and this was the cause of my error codes and it looks like several - if not all of my installation issues with Leopard.
Apparently, perhaps with Login KeyChain update, it wiped out the ContentBarrier administration name, and on launch, it was likely blocking the applications.
First, install the Login KeyChain update (see Apple software download page).
Reinstalled ContentBarrierX4 http://www.intego.com/services/updates.asp (make sure to select ContentBarrierX4).
Open ContentBarrierX4 - you'll have to sign in as the administer. You may have to go into Preferences > Accounts > to make sure that you've got admin rights.
Once you logged in, exit, then reboot.
For the first time since installing Leopard, I can shutdown without a hard power off.

  • An unexpected error occurred (error code -6584).

I get this error mesage, "An unexpected error occurred (error code -6584)." when I try yo run Time Machine application. Time capsule is not showing up under Devices in Finder, and no backups are happening?

This means the backup has likely become corrupted.
Reboot the TC just to be sure.. and even the whole network.. restarting in correct order, modem.. TC and clients with 2min gap.
No luck then do a verify of the backups.
    See A5 here http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
There is another method.. hold the option key as you click the TM icon clock in the top menu.. you will see verify backups there.
Sometimes it is hard to get past it and the only way is to wipe the old backup and start afresh.
See this thread amongst many.. as this is not uncommon.

  • The operation can't be completed. An unexpected error occurred (error code -50).

    Hello,
I have recently (in the last two months) been encountering the following error:
"The operation can’t be completed. An unexpected error occurred (error code -50)."
This error ocures after a few hours of use when my computer refueses to write anything to the disk. I can cause the dialog to apear when I attempt to creat a new folder on the desktop. Furthermore, when I attempt to run the following command in the terminal:
    $ mkdir test
    > mkdir: test: Invalid argument
As well, when I attempt to list the disks:
    $ sudo diskutil list
    > sudo: Can't mkdir /var/db/sudo/username: File exists
    >
    and nothing ever shows up.
So far the only solution I have to remidy this issue is to hold the power button until the system restarts. Sadly, the I lose all work that I did as I cannot write it to the HD.
After running permissions verification and check disk without incident, I bagan to believe that it was a hard drive failure, but after replacing the hard drive with a new one and restoring the files/install, I am begining to believe it is another problem. I have searched google and this board and attempted serveral solutions with no luck.
    Any help would be apriciated.

The boot drive is failing, or you have some other hardware fault.
Back up all data immediately, then make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to bare metal from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • Finder An unexpected error occurred (error code -6584).

I get many errors from my Retina 15" macbook pro
POP3 account is not displaying messages
safary frozen and tryin to connect to 201.122.36.151
Finder unexpected error occurred (error code -6584)
Time machine error sparse bundle arlready in use

First, I suggest you make another full backup to a locally-attached external hard drive. You should do that anyway. One backup isn't enough to be safe, and backing up over a network is less reliable than backing up locally. Then try each of the following steps that you haven't already taken.
    1. Restart the backup device. You can do that by disconnecting and reconnecting the power cord.
    2. Open the Time Machine pane in System Preferences and check that the device is selected as a destination. If it isn't, select it and try again.
    3. Hold down the option key and select Verify Backups from the TM menu in the menu bar (not the Dock icon.) This operation may take a long time. If the menu-bar icon (a clock that runs backwards) isn't showing, check Show Time Machine in menu bar in the preferences.
    4. Erase the backup device. With a Time Capsule, you do that from within the AirPort Utility application; see its built-in help for details. All backups on the device will be lost, so don't do this until you've backed up to another device. After erasing, select the device again as a backup destination in the TM preference pane. The first backup should be made over a wired connection, if possible.

  • I keep getting this when trying to open Time machine:   An unexpected error occurred (error code -6584).

I keep getting this when trying to open Time machine:   An unexpected error occurred (error code -6584). time machine wont even open up. My Time capsule has a green lite and appears fine
    Thaks,

This often means the backup is corrupted.
First of all reboot the network.. turn everything off and restart in order.. modem.. TC.. clients.
If you still have issues, hold the option key when you click the Time Machine icon on the top menu and it will bring up verify backups.
    Do that.

It seems to be a fairly complex problem if the above don't work.

  • I tried to empty the trash, full of back up file from my hard disk and it just says: "The operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -8003)"

I have an external hard disk of 319.73 GB that I use as back up memory and where I put all the movies and other files that I can't leave on the computer as they occupy too much memory space . One day I was deleting all the previous dated back up to have more space on it , but had to stop the trash for doing it cause it was taking too long and now every time that I try to empty the trash it just says "The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -8003)" and even if I press CONTINUE it won't empting it . I'm not really pratical with this things and I tried already to find out the solution here and on Google but apparently nobody ever had a similar error code and I don't know what else to do.
    I've a MacBook Pro with a Mac OS X 10.6.8 Version.
Thanks again for the help and sorry if I did some english mistakes !
    PEACE & LOVE

    Hey donnie90,
It seems like this article might be the best for helping you address this issue:
You can't empty the Trash or move a file to the Trash

Have you tried putting the file from your Drobo, onto your computer, then onto to the external hard drive?

  • External hard drive networked via AirPort Extreme gives "The operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50)" roughly every two days

My lab has about 10 Mac computers.  We all access a central hard drive by the way of wifi provided by AirPort.  It's just a regular external hard drive (Seagate Desktop Drive) that I turned into our central storage space by plugging it into AirPort (USB).  It works pretty well.  We seem to be fine with viewing the file directories, opening files, saving, deleting etc., for a day or two.  But then after a day or two, when when trying to modify files or move new files onto the central hard drive, we get the error message: "The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50)"
Any suggestions as to what may be causing this problem?
All of the computers are 2011 iMacs & MacPros.  The AirPort is 802.11n WiFi.  The hard drive is a Seagate USB 3.0 Desktop Drive.
    Thank you for your insight/suggestions.

Thanks for your reply.  I agree about the communication issue. Let me explain my setup and what I am trying to do and perhaps you can answer my questions or make suggestions.
I have a MAC Mini with a Sony TV for the video monitor.  The  Mac Mini is hard wired to the AE (Airport Extreme).  The AE has a 2 TB HD hooked up to the USB Port.  I have a 17" Mac Book Pro on the WIFI Network.
I am trying to use the MAc Mini as a "Media Server" of sorts.  Once I get iTunes running the way I plan I am goign to hook up my Apple TV (2nd Generation) to my television downstairs.
What I am trying to accomplish is have iTunes on all my computers look to the External HD on the AE for the files.  This is why I am having my (-50 errors).
So far I have noticed that if I go and try to download from iTunes purchased videos that are not ont he computer (to the external HD) it will also occassionaly give me teh -50 error.
Is there a way to change where the files go when I download them?  Say I want to download videos to the computer but not to the external HD?  However I would want to still be able to move them to the External HD.
