Backup Exec Information.
This may be of interest to users of Backup Exec Ralus:- Backup exec Ralus does not work of SLES11 SP3. Found this after the upgrade from SP2. I know this is the wrong forum, but should OES go to the next level service patch:- be warned.

Like I said it work with SLES11 Sp3, but I didn't try with OES11 Sp2. And they didn't write in the notes that it is supporter.
Personally I'd rather use a backup solution that is supported.
Well we need money to change a backup solution! ;-)

Windows 2008 r2 windows installer issue error 1719 when install Backup exec 12.5
Hi all
After a epic weekend of rebuilding our exchange server I have tried to reinstall Backup exec 12.5 64bit, this was installed with no issues during the last build, however at the end of this build I went to reinstall Backup Exec 12.5 and it is failing with
error 1719 Windows installer issue.
I have looked on many sites and tried many things non of them have worked, has anyone managed to resolve this issue.

Full HyperV Backup - Symantec Backup Exec (any version)
I'm sure this will be a favourite topic, but I was wondering if anyone could shed any light on this situation.
We have a customer which has Server 2008 R2 with a .vhd which is 1.46TB in size, and a fixed disk. They have only 150GB spare on the drive which seemed like enough. We have had an occasional full HyperV backup to tape, but almost every other
day it fails with the following in Backup Exec (now 2014):
"V-79-40960-38521 - Snapshot Technology: Initialization failure on: "VRTSRV::\\HG-2008-STD\Hyper-V?Virtual?Machine\HG-2011-SBS". Snapshot technology used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).
A virtual machine snapshot could not be created. Use the Event Viewer on the Hyper-V host to identify the cause. If the virtual machine is not properly configured, it may be necessary to use the Event Viewer in the virtual machine to identify the
cause."
In the Event log of the Virtual Machine itself, there is only one VSS error, of which I'm told I can safely ignore, but resolved anyway:
"Error: NetLocalGroupGetMemebers(spfarm), 0x80070560, The specified local group does not exist."
I also have the following error on the physical host each time I run the backup:
"Failed to create the backup of virtual machine 'HG-2011-SBS'. (Virtual machine ID A5185ADC-F34B-4898-927C-784EBC23EA1B)"
Symantec say it's the VSS writers (apart from one support technician who admitted their product was a joke) but then Microsoft say it's Symantecs issue. I'm inclined to believe Microsoft in this case, but I'm getting nowhere and our customer isn't
getting a reliable backup of their whole vhd.
Is this due to only having slightly less than 10% free space on the physical host or just Backup Exec being its usual self? Does HyperV REQUIRE that you have a certain percentage of space free on the physical machine to process? For further troubleshooting: what happens when Windows Server Backup is configured for the VM backup and ran?

Surprise surprise, it works just fine :-)
Ok, I have resolved it (kind of)
I was having ESE errors when the backup tries to run and fails immediately after. This points to Exchange VSS errors so leads you down the wrong path. After hours of following false leads, I finally found that Sharepoint can bibizarrely create these errors
after installing SP1 and not running. I ran the following command:
PSConfig.exe -cmd upgrade -inplace b2b -force -cmd applicationcontent -install -cmd installfeatures
...which resolved most of these errors, but I still got ESE Information Store Shadow Copy instance aborted errors. At this point, I'm still thinking it's a corrupt Exchange store and/or logs, as suggested by Microsoft.
Long story short, after much digging, I came across an article suggesting to check into SQL writer service permissions having to be local administrator, and not local system account, I decided to disable this service as BE is installed on a Domain Controller
so doesn't have a local admin account to use as suggested in some articles. All of a sudden, I was in business!! ESE VSS events were logging successfully and I'm now performing a full image backup finally.
Although this seems like a Microsoft issue, the fact that Veeam backed up fine, along with Windows Server Backup, does still point to BE. I still don't consider this a resolution because had the customer actually used SQL on this Server (they just use
SBSMonitoring and BE instances) there wouldn't be a backup of SQL available that can utilize GRT, but would have to perform maintenance plans and have those added to the backup routine for DR.
Hope this helps anyone else having these issues. I would also advise moving the logs manually within Exchange to another drive if you have already used the SBS wizard to move the actual database, as it doesn't move the logs this way. I've seen other
backup Software fail for this very reason but not give any hint as to what the issue was. -

Dear all!
We have a big problem with NetWare 6.5 SP7 and Backup Exec 9.2.
Since the migration to a new hardware our backup is not running.
Hardware Details:
- Server: IBM x3650 7979
- Tape: Quantum LTO-3 HH, SAS-connected
Problem description:
The tape drive is recognized correctly under NetWare and Bachup Exec. Problem comes, when even trying to label a tape: ""Job completed: With ERROR - A drive failure was detected. (24623)". We also tried different tapes, also a different tape drive (which is working without problems while being attached to another (Win 2003) server).
Additional information:
- The nwtape.cdm we renamed, to prevent it from being started.
- CDMs and HAMs are from SP7.
- For Backup Exec, we are using the lastest driver package.
What is strange: we still have an "unbound object" when entering "list devices". But I do not have a clue, which driver is missing. Our startup.ncf:
LOAD ACPIDRV.PSM
######## End PSM Drivers ########
LOAD IDECD.CDM
LOAD SCSIHD.CDM
######## End CDM Drivers ########
LOAD IDEATA.HAM SLOT=10025
LOAD AACRAID.HAM SLOT=10030
######## End HAM Drivers ########
env NDSD_TRY_NMASLOGIN_FIRST=true
LOAD KEYB.NLM Germany
LOAD CHARSET.NLM CP850
Is there something missig in our startup.ncf (which may cause the backup problem)?
Any ideas, what we can do to make the backup run?
Thanks in advance,

I see no SAS driver loaded in your startup.ncf. Does that mean you have
your tape drive connected to your raid controller? If yes, that is a
configuration which is generally not recommended.

my iphone is broken, and i came to store to change a new one today. When I come home, I found I lost my backup and may be mistake is made during before backup. The information in my previous iphone is really important for me? how can I get the backup back?
If you don't have a backup then the only possible solution is to go back to the store and see if they can get your old phone and create a backup of that. I know very often that Apple employees will wipe the returned iPhones clean before shipping them back to wherever they ship them.
When you say your old phone was "broken" does this mean it is dead and won't turn on?
Do you have a Time Machine backup of your computer, or a clone that might have this info on it?
Other than that I hate to say you may be out of luck. Time Machine and/or a cloning program performed regularily will inevitably save your a** in situations like this.
Good luck

for some reason , when i restore my iphone 4s to factory settings my headphones work when listening to music or youtube videos but when i backup my information onto it , it only comes out of one ear bud and i just got a new one from the apple store. my old iphone 4s audio jack was messed up but i just got a new one with my warranty , can anyone help me please.
It doesn't matter what it is in your backup that's causing the problem because you can not selectively restore things from your backup. It's all or nothing.
Set you phone up as a new device and start over. -
Veeam back to tape after Backup Exec completes
Yes, it's possible to use 2 mentioned solutions together. Hope, you're using Veeam latest version as it has enhanced support for tape devices. If not, have a look: http://www.veeam.com/kb1816
Tapes don't have to be directly connected to Veeam Backup Server. Any Windows server with tapes can be added to Veeam environment as Tape Server, please refer to user guide for details. Is it possible to run a Veeam job to backup to Tape after Backup Exec completes at night and append the Full Vm to the end of the tape ? Using BE 2014 currently.
Also does the Tape device need to be directly connected to the Veeam Server?
Thanks in advance

Do i need to backup my information before installation of Mac os x lion? I know I should always back up, but what i'm asking is will my information be there, or is it a totally clean install? Will my information have to be transfered?
When I installed Lion all of my files were intact and where I left them, and I did not back up my Mac, however having seen some of the problems some people are coming across when installing Lion I would recommend backing up before you install (just to be on the safe side).
Hope this helps! -
Trying to Recover Data From Old Backup Exec Tapes
I have been tasked with recovering data from an old Windows XP machine with an HP C1537A DDS3 tape drive. The machine used Backup Exec to create the tapes. In trying to recover the data I constantly get an error that says the data on the tape is inconsistent. I tried to run the HP analysis utility but it said the error log of the drive was full and it would be necessary to do a firmware load to clear it. I therefore loaded the lastest firmware.
I ran the HP analysis utilities using one of the tapes as a scratch tape (to write over):
Test 'DDS Drive Assessment Test' started on device 'HP C1537A' at address '6/0.0.0'
Please reload your media. Do you wish to continue?

||__ You appear to have used tapes not designed for this drive.

||__ You appear to be using very old tapes not designed for this drive.
||__ Non-MRS tapes tapes have been inserted 3 times.
||__ There were 9 rules checked.
||__ Testing has completed and no problems were found.
The tape that was used in the analysis was a maxlell HS-4/125s DDS3 tape -- the same type that was used to create the backup tapes.
Why does the drive think I am using "very old tapes not designed for this drive"? The tapes were witten to by this drive.
What is a "Non-MRS" tape?
The end results appears to be that "no problems were found" but Backup Exec reports that the tapes have inconsistent data.
Any suggestions on how to make the tapes readable by Backup Exec would be appreciated.
I am using Backup Exec 9.1 Rev 4691. Please do not suggest using a later version as this is the latest version that (1) will run on a Windows XP Pro box and (2) that supports the tape drive.Saberman,
Have you tried the Enterprise/Business forum for this? I doubt anyone here on the consumer section will be able to help you with Tape Storage.
Here is the link to the Tape section of the forum.

Interface RMAN with BACKUP EXEC
Hi,
I want to backup my database on tape with backup exec but i don't know the parameters to put on init.ora.
ThanksPossibly 2 parameters (depends on the environment, refer to your MML documentation):
RMAN utilizes the LARGE_POOL area of the SGA for allocating
memory for input/output buffers.
The LARGE_POOL is only used if I/O Slaves are specified by one or
both of the initialization parameters DBWR_IO_SLAVES or BACKUP_TAPE_IO_SLAVES.
If DBWR_IO_SLAVES has a non-zero value and/or BACKUP_TAPE_IO_SLAVES is set to TRUE,
then RMAN uses the LARGE_POOL because the I/O Slave Processes must coordinate their
buffer read/writes in a common area. If no value for LARGE_POOL_SIZE is set in the init.ora file,
and if I/O slaves are configured to be used, then RMAN uses the SHARED_POOL for
input and output buffers. This can put severe strain on the Shared Pool,
and should be avoided. This is often indicated by RMAN receiving an ora-4031
error from the target database.

Daylight savings and backup exec
I haven't had this problem before, the OS and patching hasn't changed,
here are the configurations and symptoms.
OS platform is NW 6.5 OES SP6. Running the time command shows the
correct time. However the Symantec Backup exec software 9.2 rev 1391 is
exactly 1 hour behind. This stems from daylight savings. The backup
software resides on a cluster node but is not cluster enabled. The node
and software have been restarted but the time is still incorrect.
This is a very strange behavior, has anyone felt this sting?
Cheers,

Backup Exec: java.lang.OutOfMemoryError
Hi
I have NW6.5SP8 running BE9.2 and have started getting this error:
java.lang.OutOfMemoryError
Any ideas how to fix this?
Thanks very much.Originally Posted by rjfraser
Hi Bob
Thanks for responding. The error is being reported by the "Backup Exec Java Application Server". I don't know that this is a Tomcat issue?
I don't know that it is related, but I got an Abend on this server a couple of days ago. The first time in a very long time. The abend log suggested memory corruption. This caused me to start looking around and I found this "out of memory error".
I don't believe you need the java app - only if you use the client side management tools. It also has a habbit of not restarting properly... so if you do a bestop then bestart, it can get balled up. But frankly, for me it works fine - so perhaps still worth fixing.
