Backup fail on Time Machine and My Passport for Mac on Yosemite

Cannot seem to get Time Machine to do a full backup of my NEW My Passport for Mac.
I've:
- Updated firmware on WD external drive (and formatted correctly for Apple)
- Updated to latest IOS 10.10.3 (Yosemite)
- Verified and repaired Mac HD via iOS Disk Utility and the WD Drive Utility (no issues found on either)
Error message continues to be "Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to My Passport for Mac. An error occurred while copying files. The problem may be temporary. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk."
I'm backing up about 250 GB and have done this numerous times on my Passport for Mac. Everything SEEMS to be fine during backup, until after about 2-3 hours, into a 4-hour backup, the error message appears without any error codes.
Does anyone have any input?  I don't think it is on the WD side.  Anyone know if there an issue with Time Machine and this external drive?  Help!
Thanks,
Dave

Hi Linc,
I hope this helps you.

Dave

    Yes.

Possibly by using an Airport Express, but depends on what type of port connection the printer requires.

  • HT201250 Backup too large & time machine not backed up for over a year.

    Today I got this message:
This backup is too large for the backup disk. The backup requires 188.89 GB but only 73.07 GB are available.
Time Machine needs work space on the backup disk, in addition to the space required to store backups. Open Time Machine preferences to select a larger backup disk or make the backup smaller by excluding files.
Then when I go to preferences it said
73.1 GB of 320 GB available
    Oldest backup July 10, 2011
    Latest backup July 10, 2011
Next back up Today at 7:25pm
I was under the impression I had been backing up everyday and today was the first day I go the warning the backup was too large. Why is it that I have not had a back up for over a year? That worries me. I had a HD crash just over a year ago and the time machine saved my life. I thought everything was back to normal once I had my new HD installed, but wondering if that was the last back up it ever did for some reason.
Any suggestions? I am going out to get a new external HD of 1TB and hoping all will start backing up again.

Hi, what Mac Utilities is this you ran?
Have you looked through Pondini's extensive TM help site?

  • I want to use my 1TB Seagate Hard drive for time machine and transferring files from Mac to PC.

For about a year I've been using my 1TB external hard drive for only time machine. To be honest, it wasn't until today that I tried to connect my hard drive to a PC and realize it isn't compatible. I read about partitioning the hard drive so that it can work both for time machine and transferring files between pc and mac. I'm not what you would call tech savvy, so I was wondering if I can get some advice on how to do this.
    Thanks in advance.

To do it, you have to partition the hard disk, so you will have one partition for Time Machine and another one to store files and use them in a PC and Mac. To create the partition, follow these steps > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU3.html
In order to read and write in the external disk on the PC, you have to select "MS-DOS (FAT)" as "Format". If you choose any other option, the PC won't be able to read your external disk. Apart from that, note that you can't use files bigger than 4 GB with FAT. If you want to use the external disk with files bigger than 4 GB, you have to format your new partition in exFAT, and you have to do it on a PC

  • HT201250 I just did my first back up with TM and My Passport for Mac, when done adn went into the box ....options...to try and fidn how to delete trash. Then I went back to see if it was erady to do its next scheduled back up and it says there is an error

I just did my initial back up to hard drive (My Passport for Mac 1TB) with TIme Machine on Snow Leopard. I had wanted to omit trash but couldn't find it. All went great and finished in an hour. Then said would restart at 6pm. I went into options about 20 minutes before (when it was done initially) to try and find how to delete trash from being backed up next time.. THis messed things up and now it doesn't recognize the disk and won't let me manually back up...says error. What do I do?

  • Bluetooth keyboard and Word 2008 for Mac after Yosemite

Bluetooth keyboard (apple) on 27 " iMac (mid 2010) won't work in Microsoft Word 2008 for Mac after Yosemite. It is paired and recognized and works normally otherwise.  Mouse works fine, too.

Follow up: After trying a number of different approaches I finally shut off the iMac and let it stay off for several minutes and then restarted it. This is something I had read that another user had tried and had worked for him. To my surprise, the keyboard now works in Word 2008. I have no idea if this will continue to work, or if it might work for any of you, but I would give it a try.
    Process:
    Shut Down your Mac
Let it stay off for several minutes
Power up and check to see if your bluetooth keyboard works in Word 2008.
    Good luck!

  • Error Backup failed in Time Machine all of a sudden

I'm using 10.5.3 with Time Machine. I also have Super Duper saving to the same disk, a LaCie 1T. This setup has been working fine since December until last night. The last backup was fine and I had to shut off time machine overnight. I turned it on this morning and now every backup has failed. Last week my hard drive died and had to be replaced but Time Machine didn't balk at that. Any ideas?

Okay, I fixed permissions on the internal hard drive and ran the backup again. Same thing as before, it gets 2.25GB and then quits. Here's the log:

  • Since I installed Yosemite, Time Machine is not doing any backup. It just keep coming with the following message in a window: "Backup Failed. Time Machine could´t back up to "....... Time Capsule". What can I do start backing up again?

Time Machine not working since Yosemite was installed.

I had this issue too and went through all the great suggestion found on this site, but finally was able to resolve it after looking at the system.log to see the reason it was failing.  By using terminal and entering:
    sudo grep backupd /var/log/system.log
I saw "Backup failed with error:11".   Then looking above, I saw many "Error:  (-36) SrcErr:YES /Applications/" messages.  After "Applications" I saw the culprit files that were causing Time Machine to fail.  I deleted some Apps that I didn't need and found Time Machine would get farther than before.  I then looked at the system.log  again and saw it failing on the remaining Apps.  I was able to use Time Machine to restore these App directories from a couple months ago before the Time Machine was failing.  Now the problem is resolved.  Whew! It seemed to be choking on corrupt files and these can be corrected by restoring earlier ones that were not corrupted.
Well, I thought I should share this with others that may have run into the same issue so they can save time.  Hope it helps!

  • External hard drive can't be found as a backup disk in time machine and I can't reformat it in Disk Utility.

Just bought a samsung 500gb external hard drive because I need to backup my mac to do a full system reboot because it is completely messed up after downloading the new yosemite update.
But when I go to time machine it isn't offered as an option for a backup disk. I go to disk utility and I can't reformat the hard drive from MS-DOS (FAT) to Mac OS extended (Journaled). I try to change it and it reverts back straight away and I can't change the name of my hard drive. I don't understand what I have to do, i'm currently in safe boot because my laptop runs too slow in normal mode.
    Any help would be great.
    MacBook Pro

Select a new partition in disk utility.. change the drive options then to GPT from MBR.
And then select Mac OS for the format.
It should work.. if not get a friend with a mac to help you.

  • Time Machine and a CRY for Help!!!!

    Hi
After 25 years being a windows user I finally came over to Apple this month. I bought a IMAC 24" intel 2.88(OS X 10.5.3) and thought I might as well get a Time Capsule (500GB). I absolutely love the IMAC and wish I had got one years ago. My problem lies with the Time capsule. My setup is a Ethernet cable from the IMAC to the Time Capsule and then the same from the capsule to my broadband modem.
Followed the instructions for backing up, which it did after much trial and effort. Only backed up 21GB. Checked that there was a file in the capsule folder. Great I thought I will try the time machine. Screen drops and the stars are moving but that's it. I cant click on cancel or press escape. The only way I could get out of this was to do a hard reset.
I looked back at the Time machine preferences and no sign of a last back up. Checked that the file was still there in the capsule folder and it was. Sorry for wittering on but can someone please help.
    thanks in advance

While there certainly isn't enough evidence to say for sure, I have to say that I don't think your issue is at all unique to your Time Capsule or your specific configuration. I also just purchased an iMac after using a PC for most of the 25 years or so of home computing (I did have a Mac for a while back in the mid-to-late 80s). I felt like the original thread poster did, I might as well have a backup drive and take advantage of Time Machine. In my case I watched the Apple.com OS 10.5 video and went online and purchased the same G-Drive Q from G-Technology that the Apple Store representative was using. After connecting up the new Ext. Drive using Firewire 800, the popup asked if I wanted to use the drive for backup ... I did want to so I answered yes and sat back and observed my entire Hard Drive being backed up. After several hours, I came back and depressed the Time Machine icon on the Dock and everything worked just like the Video indicated that it would. Unfortunately after 48 Hrs., I came downstairs and noticed my Ext. Drive light was on, but it wasn't making the usual drive sounds it typically had been making every ten minutes or so during the day. I depressed the Time Machine icon and the popup progress indicator said it was connecting to the Server and to Time Machine. This progress bar just kept moving and moving but was actually just "not responding". To make a long story short the only way I could get out of the situation was by learning about a "Force Quit". After doing that procedure, I ultimately had to hold the Power button to shut down the iMac. When I tried to Power back up, all I got was the startup tones and then a white screen. Finely I had to turn off the Ext. Disk Drive and turn it back on again, where upon, everything worked again. I have now gone into the Control Panel and Power Management and unchecked the "Put the External Drive to sleep..." box. We will see over the next few days if that solves the issue or not. In any case my lock up situation was similar enough to your that I thought I would let you know it may not actually have anything to do with your Ext. Drive or its configuration.

  • Time Machine and Back To My Mac (BTMM)

I was showing a recent Mac convert how Time Machine works.
Since my backup drive is connected to my Mac at home and I was
at my workplace, I used "Back to my Mac" (BTMM) to connect to my
home Mac. BTMM worked fine until I entered Time Machine.
Time Machine started and displayed a window showing the contents
of my desktop, but control of the remote Mac was lost.
I can still disconnect and reconnect using BTMM, but the Time Machine
screen is still there and I can't exit from it.
The cursor appears to move (that may be local), but there is no response
to keyboard commands (Esc) or mouse clicks.
Is this happening to anyone else?
    Does Time Machine interrupt BTMM?
Is there a work-around or should Time Machine be off-limits when using BTMM?
    Thanks all!
    - Phil

Disregard... Looks like it was a fluke.
Eventually, I made contact with someone else at the house.
Seems the problem was at the remote Mac.
The mouse button had no effect there either. Nor did the Esc key. (Is that normal?)
I asked for a Cmd-Opt-Esc at the other end and I watched from here and saw my desktop reappear.
When I went back into Time Machine again (via BTMM) it worked fine.
(Complete with rotating galaxy this time.)
Hmm... Is there a way to send a Cmd-Opt-Esc to a remote Mac?

  • Can I partition a Firewire 800 drive to work with Time Machine and Final Cut Pro?

Hey, I was reading that having Final Cut Projects and Events on the same external Hard Drive as a time machine backup doesn't work well together. So I was wondering if I partition a 2 TB External Hard Drive and use 1 partition for Time Machine and the other for Final Cut Pro, would it work like it should? I had thought so because it would recognize it as 2 different drives but I wasn't sure. Thank You for your time!

aside, if it is supported or not:
A backup is a crucial element in your set-up - is it wise to 'stress it' as a working drive for video-editing ...... ?
    or, vice versa:
The moment, Time Machine launches, your working drive drops its performance by half or even more.
Plus, depending on your settings, the drive is forced to copy tons of data from partition I to partition II ... due to, a partition is no 'real'/physical drive, this stresses a drive extremely .....
drives are sooo cheap. and drive-space should never be an 'issue' while movie-making ..

  • HT201514 I upgraded to OS Mountain Lion. I checked on mt Time machine and found that I had to go to Time Machine, select Disk, and found the only options were to either "Cancel" or "Remove Disk". It appears my Time Machine is no longer working since the u

I upgraded to Mountain Lion and now I'm having trouble with Time Machine. It appears that since the upgrade Time Machine is not recognizing the external hard drive. When I go to Time Machine and select Disk for the current HD I am left with one of two options: "cancel" or "remove Disk." I am worried that I will loss my backups.

    Is this a usb drive?
It will probably never recognise that drive ever again.. Mountain Lion has this little bug where it cannot recognise some USB drives.. I don't understand it.. but it just happened to me and a quick google shows it is not uncommon.
Your backups are not lost.. they are just not accessible.. you need to plug the drive into a computer with a better.. older OS. Find a new USB drive that Mountain Lion can actually read.. and even write to.. and copy the files across.

  • Time Machine and external HD in one?

I have a 2 TB Western Digital external hard drive, which I use for Time Machine backups. I have been considering buying an extra (they are on sale next week where I live) to use for stuff that takes up space on my Mac (like photos, videos etc.), but before I do so, I would like to know if I can partition or do something with the HD I already have, to use 1 TB for Time Machine and another TB for whatever I like to put in there. Is this possible, and if it is not, do I have any other choice than to buy an extra HD?
    Cheers

This is from the disk utility help ...
    Partition a non-startup disk
If you want to partition a disk that you won’t use to start up your Mac, follow these steps.
Partitioning a disk erases all the files on the disk. Be sure to copy any files you want to keep to another disk before you partition the disk.
If you’re partitioning an external disk, make sure it’s connected to your computer.
Open Disk Utility, in the Utilities folder in Launchpad.Open Disk Utility
Select the disk that you want to partition and click Partition.
Choose the number of partitions from the Volume Scheme pop-up menu.If you can’t choose the number of partitions, follow the steps for partitioning a startup disk.
Click each partition and type a name for it, choose a format, and type a size. You can also drag the divider between the partitions to change their sizes. If a partition’s name has an asterisk beside it, it’s shown larger than its actual size in order to display its name clearly.
Click Options and choose one of the following:
If you’ll be using the disk on a Windows computer, choose the Master Boot Record partition scheme (also known as “fdisk”).
If you’ll be using the disk only with Mac computers, choose GUID Partition Table.
    Click Apply.
Note that all files on the disk will be erased when the partitions are created. If you want to try to keep your existing files, you can try this...
Create new partitions on a disk
You may be able to create new partitions on a disk without losing any of the files on the disk. Each partition works like a separate disk. You may need to create a new partition if you want to install multiple operating systems on your computer. You can also create partitions to help organize your files.
As a precaution, back up your data before creating new partitions on your disk
Open Disk Utility, in the Utilities folder in Launchpad.Open Disk Utility
Select the disk where you want to create a new partition and click Partition.
Select an existing partition in the Volume Scheme list, and click Add (+).Disk Utility splits the partition into two, leaving the data from that partition in one of the new partitions. If the partition is less than half-full, Disk Utility creates two partitions of equal size. Otherwise, it creates one partition large enough for the data, and another partition with the remaining space.
Resize the partitions as needed. You can drag the dividers between the partitions in the Volume Scheme list, or you can select a partition in the Volume Scheme list, and then enter a value in the Size field.
Choose how to format the partitions that will be erased or created. For each new partition, select it, enter a name, and then choose a format.
    Click Apply.
