Backup Mac to CD or DVD

I know all about, and I do, backup to a timemachine volume externally. I am looking for an easy way to make a second backup of my mac (or at least my files) onto a different media (something besides a hard drive). I decided a CD/DVD would be a good alternative. Asside from manually sorting and burning each CD can anyone recommend a decent way to acomplish this?
Thanks,
-Michael

Personally I gave up on optical media for backup years ago when my data exceed 100 GB.
Besides the nuisances of cataloging all of them, there is the additional problem that home recorded optical media only have a limited life expentance. This adds the additional problem of having to test past media for valid data.It was just more trouble then I thought it was worth.
I just got another external disk and throw away all of the optical media.

  • How to recover I photos from hard drive?  I was told by Apple tech to reinstall my MAC OS X Install DVD, after doing so all of my data has been wiped out.

I had an issue with my Mac and called Apple the tech told me to reinstall my MAC OS X Install DVD.  I specifically asked if I needed to do a back up before doing so, I was told that it would not be necessary none of my data would be lost.  After installation everything was wiped out.  I am most concerned about retrieving my I photos.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

You did not do a reinstall but rather an Erase and Install. If you don't have a backup, which you should have already had, then you need to see the following:
    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as MAC Data Recovery, Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads. Recovery software usually provide trial versions that enable you to determine if the software would help before actually paying for it. Beyond this or if the drive has completely failed, then you would need to send the drive to a recovery service which is very expensive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

  • Compressing Time Machine backup folder and burning to DVD

Can I compress the backup folder and burn to a DVD disc?
Most people seem to assume that an external hard drive won't fail and so keeping all files backed up to it is a good thing. Surprise - external HDDs fail also.
I'd really like to have compressed back ups on a DVD in order to have 3 locations with my files.

It would have to be a pretty small backup to fit on a DVD. You won't likely find too much benefit from compressing the data because much of it is in binary form that is most likely not going to reduce much if at all.
A single DL DVD can hold 8 GBs. If you have just OS X installed that will require 16 GBs less whatever you may save compressing the data. Personally, I would not risk compressing the data since that could prove just as problematic or more so than keeping it on a hard drive. Furthermore, if you want more than 5 years storage life out of the DVDs, then you have to avoid the stuff they sell at places like Office Depot which have a relatively short shelf life.
If you need to use more than one DVD, then you need a backup utility designed to span a backup across multiple media. Your choices are somewhat limited: Retrospect, Apple's Backup (requires a .Mac account to download and use,) and possible Tri-Backup (but I am not sure about it.)
Or you can buy several hard drives of suitable size, make multiple backup copies to each drive, store one in a vault off-site. Rotate your weekly and monthly backups to the other drives and once every quarter rotate the off-site drive. The chance of all the drives failing at once is pretty small.

  • New mac mini and noisy dvd drive

Any time I have a DVD in my brand new mac mini, from commercial DVDs to trying to author a blank DVD, I get the dreaded chainsaw sound that plagues anyone who has owned an xbox 360. Has anyone else suffered with this with their new mac mini or should I send it back to apple

I should have been a little more specific. This happens usually when I try and do slightly disc intensive tasks, such as burn a disc, import a disc to itunes, and I can even get it to sound when I leave a disc in the drive, turn the computer off, and as it's booting it will make the grinding noise. I first thought that the computer couldn't lay on it's side as that's when I first noticed it (sort of like the wii on it's side because this fits my setup), but it makes the same noise whether I have it on it's side or not. This is also not disc specific, I can re-create the noise with different discs, DVDs, CDs when importing to itunes. Guess I'll be taking it to an iTunes store to get it checked out.

You are right, Adobe does not support CS5 because it is no longer sold.
Simply download the trial version of CS5 from this Adobe web site and input your serial number.

You'll need to provide some more information .... what current mac mini do you have? Click on the apple in the left corner of the menu bar, click about this mac, and what does it say for processor, memory, and os x version?
When you say you have no DVD, do you have the mac mini server or is the DVD broken?
You can't do anything with 10.6 Snow Leopard on a PowerPC mini, however, if it is an Intel-based mini, you could probably hook up the systems in target disk mode to install 10.6.

  • How to buy and install mac os x 10.6 in a late 2007 mac book with no dvd drive?

i want to buy snow leopard for mac book with no dvd drive, but the only choice in app store is dvd copy, no digital copy!

You'd have to have someone with a DVD drive make a Disk Image of the DVD, have them Restore that .dmg to a Flash drive that's big enough, the boot the MB using alt key to choose to boot from the USB Flash drive.

This freezing reminds me of really old Macs, long ago, in the days of the old-school peripherals like SCSI drives, terminators, scanners and the like. If you had a SCSI conflict, like the wrong device ID's or something, you'd freeze up like that. Back in those days you'd call 800-SOS-APPLE (AAPL?) and they'd run you through disconnecting all your extra hardware - Jaz and Zip drives, CD burners, scanners etc and then eliminate them one by one by adding them incrementally and testing for the freeze/bomb dialog.
But, today we have Firewire and none of those ancient issues (no free lifetime tech support either). My iMac's ports are all full, and I only know which devices are connected when I have to remove something for another device. iSight, scanner, card reader, external hard drive, USB soundsticks, etc. You wouldn't happen to have any SCSI devices hooked up, would you?
Out of curiosity, have you tried a different USB/Firewire port for the hard drive? Or run the hardware test DVD that comes with your computer? This weird freezing seems to suggest a problem with the computer, RAM or network more than a device. Bad devices, in my experience, cause kernel panics, not freezing.

  • Mac mini as a dvd player

Just wondering does my mac mini upscale my dvd's when it plays them like a dvd player with HDMI would do.

One of the options of the DVD software is Interlacing in the menus of the application. While not quite upscaling, it does offer a sharper picture for some movies when you do interlace, and sometimes when you don't. Upscaling is a function of the TV set you attach the Mini to, and not so much the Mini itself. The Mini has DVI which can be connected to HDMI with a single adapted cable. Don't try to downstep to VGA, as there you will lose image quality. If your TV has no DVI nor HDMI port, the best image resolution you'll get is 720 x 480 over S-Video as S-Video/VGA adapters exist.

  • Unable to use Mac OS X Install DVD

My iMac came with Mac OS X Install DVD, but since I have upgraded to Mountain Lion through the Apple App Store and have made a bootable USB. So after formatting my HDD I'm unable to boot from the USB or the DVD. When prompt to select "where you want to install OS X" from the Install OS X menu I am unable to select the device (This disk doesn’t use the GUID Partition Table Scheme), Also I have tried using the factory DVDs but nothing happens, after loading the DVD and holding down the "Option Key" (Alt) the DVD then gets ejected. I have run out of ways to correct this problem, and I have sold this computer online and need to ship soon, and your immediate response is greatly appreciated!

UPDATE I have finally got it to install

  • After i ran the installer program to reset to factory settings, in the Disk Utility menu there is no hard drive listed.  How do I properly install the OS?  On the left hand side it lists: 250.06 GB Hitachi HTSS..., Mac OS X Install DVD, HL-DT-ST DVDRW G2

Perian 1.2.3 *should* work for both QuickTime & and QTX in Mountain Lion. Regardless of the filetype container, whether it is a Matroska (.mkv) or a .mov. As to the actual encoding of the file (h264, .mp2, whatever..) I have found most play, even older formats.
Even though it's no longer supported and is a dead project, it works just fine. It will load as a System Preference file and adds to the Other category in them.
I think in 10.8 you've still got support for QTX so it may work with that. (in Mavericks, it only works for QT7)
If not, just run QuickTime 7.6.6.

If no luck there, you could also try VLC at http://www.videolan.org
