Backup to USB disk on AirPort Extreme fails

I have been using Backup to save files from my MacBooc to a USB Disk connected to my AirPort Extreme. Since I've installed Snow Leopard this doesn't work any longer. Backup keeps saying that it is 'Waiting for volume AirPortDisk', although the requested volume is available. It is visible on my desktop and I can open it and browse the old backup incremental files.

  • Unable to access shared USB Disks on Airport Extreme using Leopard

I have a Mac Book Pro, iMac and Mac Mini all running Leopard with all of the latest updates. I use an Airport Extreme (also patched to the latest updates), and it has a 100 GB USB drive attached.
When I was running OS X Tiger, all of my devices could connect to the shared USB drive and store files. Now that I've upgraded all of my platforms to Leopard, none of them can access the USB drive. If I try to open the disk using Finder I get the following error:
"The operation cannot be completed because the original item for "Shared Disk 1" cannot be found."
Anyone have a clue as to how to fix this?
    Thanks...

  • Partitioned USB disk on Airport Extreme n?

Since the new base stations are not in users' hands yet, I hope someone can give me some thoughts on it.
I would like to use one of my Lacie D2 drives with a new base station, but will need to partition the drive for internal reasons. Any thoughts on what a partitioned drive might present, i.e. will only 1 partition be visible, or will all partitions mount by default?
    Any thoughts appreciated

  • Time Machine Error after moving disk to Airport Extreme

I have been using Time machine with a 1 TB, WD MyBook hard drive for the past 2 weeks with no problem. The drive had been connected directly to my Macbook Pro, via the Firewire 800 cable.
Today, I moved the drive and connected it via USB to my Airport Extreme Base Station version 7.3.1.
When Time Machine tried to create the next scheduled backup, I got the following error:
    *Time Machine Error*
"This backup is too large for the backup volume. The backup requires 159.8 GB but only 159.1 GB are available.
To select a larger volume, or make the backup smaller by excluding files, open System Preferences and choose Time Machine"
It seems to me that Time machine is trying to do a brand new backup instead of the incremental one its supposed to do.
How can I fix this and have TM recognize that there is already a backup sequence in the disk?
    Thanks for your help.

Time Machine uses a different method for creating its archive, depending on how the backup disk is connected. When using a directly connected drive, it uses a time-stamped folder structure. When using a networked disk, it uses a sparse disk image format. Therefore, when you connected that drive to the base station, Time Machine was trying to create a new sparse image archive with the leftover space. It did not find enough space, since your direct connect Time Machine archive was taking up too much space already.
If you want to use it over the network, you'll have to erase the drive and start over with Time Machine.

  • Can't print from Win2000 to USB printer via Airport Extreme

Background: I have an Epson Stylus Photo 820 printer connected by USB to an Airport Extreme base station. My iMac is connected to the base station via an ethernet cable.
Using Bonjour for Windows 1.0.3, I've set up the Epson printer to print from Win2000 in a virtual machine in VirtualPC 6 which is running in the iMac. The setup process for the printer completed OK, without a hitch. (By the way, I loaded the printer driver from the printer's disk, because the driver for the Epson Stylus Photo 820 isn't one of the drivers selectable from the Bonjour window.)
Problem: When I try to print via the route that I set up using Bonjour, an error message appears, stating:
    - There was an error found when printing the document "mhtml.mid://00000047/" to IP-extreme986254.local.9100"\
(Note: extreme986254 is the name of the network I configured in the base station. Otherwise, the network is working OK. Also, my Win2000 in VPC is connected to the internet OK.)
When I re-try printing, I get the same error message.
When I hook the printer directly to the iMac by USB and then set it up as a printer for Win2000 in that configuration, I have no trouble printing to the printer.

    Hi gingerjedi,
It's normal with your actual Airport and confirm by Apple, but ...
Only If you see your printer in Airport Admin Utility under Printer :
    1) Download and install : http://www.openprinting.org/download/printdriver/macosx/foomatic-rip-2008-01-30. dmg
    2) Download and install : http://www.openprinting.org/download/printdriver/macosx/gplgs-8.61-ub.dmg
    3) Download and install : http://www.openprinting.org/download/printdriver/macosx/hpijs-2.7.10-UB.dmg
    4) Repair permissions with Onyx or with your Install Disk
    5) Restart your computer
    6) Restart your connection with your Printer (Cable-Power-Connection with your Airport)
    7) In Prefs Panes, select Printer ( + ) and install a new Printer
    8) Select your indicated Printer in the menu choice. If you have a Name for your Airport, give this Name under Place or Emplacement (excuse, i am French) and select HP Deskjet D2400 Foomatic/hpijs (recommended).
    9) And click Done
With this Solution, you can just print. All other software possibilities can not run under the Airport. It is normal.
I think all is ok for you.

There are a number of posts related to copying issues between Windows Vista / 7 and AirPort Disks. Two potential solutions being forwarded are: 1) Changing the LAN Manager authentication level, and/or 2) Disabling the Windows Search feature.
To change the LAN Manager authentication level:
From the Windows Vista / 7 desktop, click Start
    Search for: security
    Click 'Local Security Policy'
Goto Local Policies > Security Options
Under Policy, double-click 'Network security: LAN Manager authentication level'
Change level to: Send LM & NTLM responses
Under Policy, double-click 'Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including RPC) clients'
    De-select 'Require 128-bit encryption'
    Click OK
     To disable Windows Search:
Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs & Features
On the right-hand side, click "Turn Windows features on/off"
Scroll down, and de-select "Windows Search".
Press OK, close all windows and restart.
A third "solution," that has worked for me, is verify that both the AirPort base station and the Win7 PC are using the exact same Workgroup Name. In my case, I use "WORKGROUP" (without the quote marks) for this name. From the AirPort Utility, you would enter this value on the Disks > File Sharing tab. On Win7, Start > Control Panel > System and Security > System > Change Settings > Change > Workgroup

The Timed Access settings in AirPort Utility will allow you to control "who" connects to your network and "when" they can connect.
AirPort Utility >Click AirPort icon > Edit > Network tab > Enable Timed Access
For more information, click the Help menu at the top of the screen
    Click AirPort Utility Help
Click Setting up a WiFi network,
Click Control when a user can access your network, and also
Click Control access to your wireless network.

  • Problems with Airport Extreme Firmware 7.6.1. and Time Machine Backups to USB Disks

I found that when I upgraded to Firmware 7.6.1 my Airport Extreme was no longer able to maintain afp server connections to USB disks mounted to the APE. If I power cycled the APE it would work for a while and then fail again. This even applied for connectins on gigabit ethernet, not just wifi. Consequently my Time Machine backups became unusable. Rolling back to 7.6 fixed it, but I permanently fixed this by changing the IPv6 mode from "Automatic" to "Host". No problems since then.

I hate to have to tell you this, but backing-up that way is unreliable and not supported by Apple.   See:  Using Time Machine with an Airport Extreme Air Disk.

  • How do I backup folders on my shared USB drive on Airport Extreme?

    Hello,
I have a USB drive as a shared drive on my Airport Extreme.  I DO NOT want to use it as my backup drive.  I have a drive connected to my MacBook Air.  But I want to back up folders on that shared drive where my photos and music are stored.
I don't see an option in Time Machine.
    How do I do this?
    Thanks

Time Machine will only backup your Macs internal hard disk or any external hard disks physically attached to the Mac. Time Machine can not backup one remote device to another remote device.
To backup the external HDD, you would need to first attach it to your Mac, for Time Machine to "see" it. Unfortunately, this would not be very convienent in the long run.

  • Mapping to disk on Airport Extreme's USB port from G5 over Ethernet

I just set up my Airport Extreme network, with multiple machines (Windows XP, Vista, Mac G5, iPad and iPod Touch) sharing the internet connection via both Ethernet and WiFi without any problem.
My XP and Vista machines are connected via WiFi, and I was asked to supply the shared disk's password, and once I provided it, I was able to see the drive attached to the USB port on the Extreme.
My Mac G5 is connected to the Airport via Ethernet. It never asked me for the shared disk's password, adn I could not see the drive in Finder.
Any suggestion on how to map to the shared drive over Ethernet will be greatly appreciated. Thanks! /Kenny

Any suggestion on how to map to the shared drive over Ethernet will be greatly appreciated.
It really shouldn't make any difference whether the G5 is connected by Ethernet or wireless, the AirPort Disk should be "visible" in the Finder sidebar.
If not already, be sure that you have either or both "Connected servers" & "Bonjour computers" enabled in Finder Preferences > Sidebar.

  • Airport Extreme Fails to mount/share disk

Recently I disconnected all users from my LaCie HD shared from my Apple Airport Extreme to back it up to another 1TB drive formatted as FAT32. I did this while directly connected to the MacbookPro.
    1) It appears that there is no easy disconnected way to cleanly unmount a disk from the extreme. I was forced when connecting the drive to the MacbokPro to repair both the disk and permissions. Is there a safe way to do this?? I really found this as an artifact to the second and for me personnaly larger problem.
    2) The drive now appears in the airport utility shared disks window as a 698GB disk, but I cannot get sharing to work under any circumstances. The Airport Utility will not otherwise recognize the disk. Both MAC and PC clients now (after having removed and replaced the disk) can now no longer see the base station as a "server". It gives a "not operational" error when using the BS/WAP name. When using the IP (internal address) it fails with a slightly different error (cannot be found).
I looked through the original 20 or so pages of posts trying to find something similar. I did not see anything.
    Any suggestions??

Like Todd, in the original post, I have:
    1. verified that connection between cable modem & comcast is fine by connecting both ThinkPad and PowerBook and both remain connected and are able to perform random downloads for hours on end.
    2. Wireless connectivity works fine for my two laptops as they both work with an airport express and a Linksys wireless access point & router.
    3. Hard reset teh Airport Extreme till I'm blue in the face.
    4. Already have firmware 5.7 installed, the AEBS is brand new.
    Symptoms are:
Both Thinkpad and Powerbook work fine after a power reset on the AEBS. But after an indeterminate amount of time -- anywhere from 15 minutes to three hours they fail to get beyond the AEBS out to the net.
It isn't the WiFi, because I can have one laptop computer connnected to the ethernet port and it fails get beyond the AEBS.
By simply restarting teh AEBS via the Airport Admin Utility or disconnecting power when the Airport Admin utility fails to connect to the AEBS, I can resume my work on the net.
It's not like I'm transferring large amounts of data, just doing casual surfing, so the error buffers should be overfilled.
It is that comcast is doing a regular expiration of my WAN IP address.
    any clues?
    any way to fix it?

  • Setting up shared usb drive on airport extreme

I just bought a new airport extreme a couple of weeks ago and setup a wireless network in my home. Now i was thinking of connecting a usb hard drive to the airport extreme to act as a place to backup and share files. Looking through the manual it looks like I have to recreate my network to make this happen or is there a way to just add the drive to an existing network?? Thanks.

    Pretty much.

  • Time Machine disk and Airport Extreme issues

I have a portable USB drive I use as my Time Machine disk. It works great, but only when I manually mount the disk.
I recently got an Airport Extreme, which allows me to mount a disk off of it. So, I figure I'll mount my USB Time Machine disk there so Time Machine backs up hourly.
Well, the first issue I get is that Time Machine tells me the disk isn't properly formatted! Odd, since I've had it configured via the app for backups. I go into preferences to select a disk, and I choose my Time Machine disk. When I next tried to run a backup, it indicated I don't have enough room on the disk, requiring ~106 GB .... almost as if it thought it hadn't done any backups before and was going to run a full one.
I dismounted the drive from the Airport Extreme and hooked it back up locally, and I get the same results within Time Machine.
I also noticed a new file on the root of my Time Machine, with a .sparsebundle extension. Is this related in any way?
Anyway, what can I do, short of a full reset of my Time Machine disk, to get it working through my Airport Extreme?

    Me again ...
I hooked up my USB TM disk again to my Airport Extreme. I don't see it as a mounted drive in my Sidebar. However, I see it under the Devices on my sidebar, under "my" computer, then Time Machine Backups, then a backups.backupdb folder.
To start fresh with TM backups I'll need to erase the drive. From what I see, do I just delete the 'backups.backupdb' folder and its contents?

  • Is it possible to share a disk on airport extreme for both Time Capsule use and Windows use

    Hello
I was hoping to add some better backup capacity to our home. Can I use the same disk attacheded to the USB port of an Airport Extreme for Time Capsule use for our Macbooks, as well as general use by the windows laptops> If not is it possible to add multiple disks to the Airport Extreme and designate one for Mac Laptops, and the other for Windows use.
    Regards
    Ted

Regardless of the client's OS, you can use the AirPort Disk (USB HDD attached to the AirPort Extreme's USB) port as a 'NAS' device. You also have the option of partitioning it if you actually want separate volumes to be used between Mac or Windows clients. I would recommend partitioning it for Mac OS Extended (Journaled) which would also format it for HFS+. Normally HFS+ volumes are not readable (natively) by Windows, but the Extreme's File Server will share this drive out with both AFP (for Macs) and SMB (for Windows/Linux) clients.
However, one note of caution. Do NOT use this AirPort Disk for Time Machine backups as this is NOT supported by Apple. Although a number of users have done so, a number of them also post here complaining of corrupted backups.
