Backups missing

Hi first post
I have a white macbook 2008 model, running leopard. ive been making backups via time machine for a while now, backing up all my old photos and the such.
my brother recently got a macbook pro 2010 model, running snow leopard. i let him use the same external hard drive to back up his computer.
Now when i went into the backups folder on the hard drive, all i can find is his computers backups and not mine. Has his overwritten my old backups? Or is this not possible, and maybe he is not telling the whole truth when asked what happened to my stuff? If there is any way to get stuff back, that would be good, as i was kind of relying on getting some stuff off this hard drive. Thanks

Do you mean via the Finder?
If so, maybe not. On Snow Leopard only, when you select a disk for Time Machine to back up to, that already has another Mac's backups on it, you get this prompt:
|
|
This happens most often when you get a new Mac, and want to continue the same "set" of backups. See #B5 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum), for details.
If he clicked Reuse, the backups are now identified as belonging to his Mac. The first backup of it was a full one, so Time Machine may have had to delete a lot of (your) old backups to make room. And if he's made more backups since then, more old ones may have been deleted.
Use the +*Browse . . .+* option, per #E2 in Troubleshooting, to view the backups. See if there are any dates in the Timeline from before you lent him the drive. If so, you should be able to restore from them.

  • Time Machine backup missing bits of iPhoto library

    I just noticed that the size of my iPhoto '09 library as seen in the Latest directory on the backup drive is a little smaller than the current size of my iPhoto library. The backup is up to date. I made sure by running Time Machine manually.
    After some exploring I found whole directories within the iPhoto package structure that are just missing on the backup drive. For example, iPhoto Library / Modified / 2009 / Sep 26, 2009 is missing. I can't understand why. TM has run plenty of times since those photos were imported into iPhoto. I found other directories missing, too.
    What's up with this? At this point I no longer trust Time Machine. If it's not backing up these directories what else is it not backing up?

    Move/backup/move back/backup did not fix the problem. TM still didn't backup the missing directories.
    I was finally able to convince TM to do the right thing by following the procedure described here:
    http://www.nzmac.com/quick-tips/time-machine/how-do-i-reset-time-machine.html
    This isn't a solution because I still don't know what caused TM to think that it backed up something that it didn't back up. But the article was suggested by a friend of mine in IT who also owns a few Macs. After following the procedure and running TM again I can see all of the previously missing files backed up on the ext drive. I also used BackupLoupe (http://www.soma-zone.com/BackupLoupe/) to browse the files that were actually copied by the last backup. I see that TM copied the directories that I knew were missing and two other directories that I did not know were missing.
    At this point I think my TM backup is complete. But now I'm on the lookout for a better backup solution. Until I find it I'll need to periodically compare backup sizes to make sure that TM keeps doing its job.

  • Database restore from backup--miss some transaction log backup files.How to restore?

    One database with full recovery model
    it runs full backup at 12:00 am on 1/1 one time.

    If we can't find 3:00 am, 6:00am, 9:00am transaction log backup files, could we still restore to 6:00am? We still have all transaction log backup files after 12:00Pm.

    NO..log files are incremental and connected.If any log file is missing you cannot restore  to point which comes after backup which is lost or damaged.Like u miss 3 AM trn log backup now even if you have 6,9,12 AM trn log backups its of no use .

    Hello,
    All the former posts are right, alter database begin backup; doesn't exists in 9.2 althought
    you already have in this release the alter database end backup;.
    So as to put all the tablespaces in backup mode in one command I suggest you to create a
    stored procedure as follows:
    CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE begin_backup IS
    TYPE RefCurTyp IS REF CURSOR;
    cv RefCurTyp;
    sql_cv VARCHAR2(400);
    tbs VARCHAR2(128);
    sql_stmt VARCHAR2(200);
    BEGIN
    -- Mise en BEGIN BACKUP des TABLESPACES
    sql_cv := 'SELECT distinct (A.name) FROM sys.v_$tablespace A, sys.v_$datafile B, sys.v_$backup C where A.TS# = B.TS# and B.FILE# = C.FILE# and C.STATUS = ''NOT ACTIVE''';
    OPEN cv FOR sql_cv;
    LOOP
    FETCH cv INTO tbs;
    EXIT WHEN cv%NOTFOUND;
    sql_stmt := 'ALTER TABLESPACE '||tbs||' BEGIN BACKUP';
    EXECUTE IMMEDIATE sql_stmt;
    END LOOP;
    CLOSE cv;
    END;
    Then, I just have to call the Procedure like that:
    execute <schema>.begin_backup; and all the tablespaces are in backup mode.
    This procedure must be created on a User/Schema with the following privileges:
    alter tablespace
    select on sys.v_$tablespace
    select on sys.v_$datafile
    select on sys.v_$backupHope it can help.
    Best regards,

  • Export GPO Backup Missing Settings

    Hi. I'm trying to use SCM 3.0 to implement the WS2008R2SP1 Domain Controllers Security Compliance 1.1 in a newly promoted DC.
    The baseline has 393 unique settings but when I tried to export it to a GPO backup folder and then import it back to SCM, I only get 220 unique settings. Is this a bug or a default behavior of SCM 3.0?

    Hi,
    I have just seen you thread and wonder if you have found a solution.
    I have noticed exactly the same behaviour on trying the member server policy. If I duplicate the policy, export it as a SCM Cab and then re-import, there are exactly the same number of settings, but with a GPO backup it misses 67 setting and creates 3 unique
    ones!

  • ITunes & iOS 5 Upgrades-missing backups, missing contact info

    Using Windows XP, upgraded iTunes to 10.5.0.142 couple of days ago, then iOS 5 yesterday. When I installed iOS 5, it didn't reload my apps AND was missing any contact data beyond 2 phone numbers.  In iTunes and on my pc \Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup I only had 1 backup from yesterday (the day I upgraded) and it didn't inlcude my last iOS4 backup either.  I had sync'd multiple times last week as I was adding contacts. WHERE DID THEY GO?
    Also missing contact phone numbers where I had more than 2 phone numbers.  Noticed in my Favorites that some were numbers and also tried other 'fixes' mentioned elsewhere like just editing one contact or importing SIM data -- none worked.  I have been using iDrive Lite so I can recover some, but ***?  Don't know what else is missing.
    And, apps didn't restore at all.  Have to redownload all, but at least app data seems to have been preserved.  What's going on???

    I have solved it by unchecking (momentaneously till apple fix it) the "Convert higher bit rate songs" option.
    I know that it need more space but i don't have too much music synced so.. it isn't a problem for me..
    I have this problem because i'm using the "manually manage music and videos", i'm not using the auto sync option because iTunes always try to copy my new apps to my mac even having that option unchecked...
    Now we have iCloud... i don't know why apple still have not deleted this feature!
    Anyway... i have solved it momentaneously.
    Apple.... come on!

  • Device Backups missing

    I haven't checked this in a while but after updating to iOS 4.3 I've noticed that my device backups are missing. My last backup was in August 2010. I sync to my Mac at least once a week sometimes more. Why is my iTunes not backing up my data? Can anyone help me? I have tried to completely clean reinstall Snow Leopard to resolve this issue but no success. Still not backing up my devices. iPad 1 nor iPhone 4!

    iTunes could not connect to the iphone because an unknown error occured (0xB78156A1)
    It was able to back up on a separate User account but not on my User account. It must have something to do with my User account.

  • Time Machine Backup Missing?

    I have been searching for lost photos for a couple of years, and have a new MBP and want to try to finally reaarange my digital life. I had stopped time machine from making backups because I was hoping I would not overwrite the backups that may have contained the missing photos, since time machine as it marches along eventually overwrites older backups to make room for newer ones.
    So this issues has two main parts. First, I have all the missing "phtos" in its own iphoto library. Thus I can see about 900 or so thumbnails, but of course no photos to go with the thumbnails. I had hoped I could at least recover the thumbnails, but when I look in all my drives I don't see a folder associated with the thumbs - only partial thumbs that appear to be from face recognition attempts.
    My next goal was to try to restore a backup from the time machine to the brand new MBP in the hopes that the photos may be in the backup. When I navigate to my time capsule, I can see saprsebundles there, but when I try to restore from time machine several I can't select which point in time to back up from. When I look at my time machine preferences on my current mchine (running 10.6.8), it shows latest backups failed, but not because it was turned off but because it says it doesn't recognize the username or password. I have updated the firmeware, and when I go into the time capsule through airport utility it shows everything operating fine, and I can access time capsule with no problem. When I click on time machine it says no backup can be found and asks if I want to setup time capsule. Now I'm stuck because I certainly don't want to accidentally erase any backups that may exist.
    So how do I get to these time machine backups to see if indeed the lost photos are lurking anywhere? And can these thumbs somehow be found so I can at least save them? I know they won't be of much quality but at least I can see something when viewing them in iphoto.

    Not sure why you say "at least three" unless the Time Capsule is set up to Secure shared disks with accounts (per the Disks window of Airport Utility).  In that case, there may be multiple accounts on the TC; each one must log on with its name and password, and will see only what belongs to that particular account:
    If you backed-up with one account for a while, then changed to another, each would have a sparse bundle for the same Mac.
    Othewise, there should be one sparse bundle per Mac.
    Should be only one sparsebundle, but I probably copied things in the past - this is almost 3 years that I'm still coming back and hoping to find these photos on a backup somehow. When I open Airport Utility I don't even see a menu bar like your image shows, and when I go to the menu itself all options including disk are greyed out.
    Here is my finder window with the sparsebundles:
    they all seem to have the same data in them.
    They'll all have the same folder structure, but the contents should be the same as the Mac that made them.
    But if the backups are made at different times you would think the files would be different. If I have photos taken every month, shouldn't the backups from say February have additional files than the backups from January?
    The big question is are there some earlier backups lurking somewhere - I thought I had read that TM keeps earlier backups even though it may not display them.
    If you don't see them via the Finder, either there's nothing else there, or there's some sort of corruption or damage.
    So essentially it would seem that any backups from 2009 are gone if the earliest backup from the sparsebundle is dated 2010?
    Since I see these backups through finder, would the display other tm backups display something different if I could get it to work?
    Nothing extra, unless there's damage that can be fixed.
    The sparsebundles seem to mount and open through finder, but nothing works through tm itself.
    Have you tried the things in my previous post?
    The things in the previous post seemed to apply if I couldn't mount a sparsebundle - I must be missing what to do when TM itself will not start from the dock or menu bar. I did reselect it as drive option and then turned off backups again.

  • DFS behavior on Server 2008 R2 / Windows backups / missing data

    Hello,
    created a namespace, added a folder, configured full mesh replication between 4 members, everything seemed to work fine (data started replicating to all other members when added to any of them, etc.). Left them for initial replication over our slow link.
    Tonight Windows backup process ran and backed up all the data. DFS process stopped while the backup was running (that's what event viewer shows). After it started again, all the data that wasn't already replicated to other member servers is missing from
    the "primary" one...
    Now whenever i restore that missing data to the original folder, dfs starts syncing and removes it again.. The only way to restart the whole thing is to disable replication to all folders, wipe them, wait for such changes to apply, etc.
    The server i'm adding data to is Server 2008 R2, other DFS members are Server 2012 R2.
    Why is this happening and how do i fix it?...
    Thanks!

    Hi,
    From the behavior, the initial replication is affected before finishing and now it consider the "not-copied data" is "pre-existing data" so it removed them from DFSR folder for avoiding confliction.
    In current situation, you should pre-seeding the replication data instead of waiting DFSR for finishing it. Enable DFSR later once your pre-seeding job finished.
    To do a pre-seeding, you can use Robocopy to copy files/folders with NTFS permissions to your other 3 servers.

  • IPod Touch 4G Backup Missing

    I have an iPod Touch 4G with the most recent software and iTunes on my MacBook Pro.  For whatever reason, the audio quit working on my iPod.  After turning it off and back on, still didn't work. Ditto with re-synching it.  So I go to restore it.  I back it up, and restore.  Well, I get an error message when I try to restore.  No code, just an error message.  I try to restore with prior backups listed, and I keep getting the error message.  So I have apparently lost all my app data, including in-app purchases.  I keep getting the error message with older backups that are saved.  Any suggestions for what I can do?  Where are all the backups that I am supposed to have from when I synch?  According to my computer (when I go through the path listed in the support forums), I have backup from today (which don't work), from July 21st, (which don't work), and from Feb.  I synch my iPod MUCH more frequently than that!  I do not have a more recent time machine backup (which I guess I need to start doing more frequently!) to get a more recent backup than that.
    Edit:  I also have an iPad, which I backedup and restored to try to put some of the data from my iPod onto it.  As I have only had it for a few days (1st gen), I don't have much information on it to lose yet.  Interstingly, after the restore from backup failed from my iPod data, I was able to restore from my iPad backup that I just did with no problem.  I don't know why it will backup and restore on my iPad but not on my iPod.

    My error message from my older backups says "because some files could not be restores from the backup."  I have no idea how to get around this.  The ones on my Time Machine from April also say this.

  • Why are all my backups missing after an iTunes update?

    Hello. For reasons unbeknownst to me, my iPhone 4 locked up completely yesterday afternoon. It was lagging pretty hard, so I powered it off and on, or tried to, but it froze on the apple logo for approximately 25 minutes. I wasn't home, so I tried to do a hard reset and the phone eventually displayed a USB pointing at the iTunes logo. Uh oh. Once I arrived back home, iTunes told me the phone was in recovery mode and had to be factory restored. I wasn't happy about it, but I had just backed it up before the dilemma so I figured it wouldn't be a big deal. WRONG. iTunes required an update to version 11.1 in order to continue. Done. Then it told me that in order to restore my iPhone that I needed to upgrade it to iOS 7.0.2 Ok, I was on 6, but if you insist. The recovery was semi-successful-the phone is no longer a brick and is operating iOS 7, but it of course wiped out everything. The only thing to carry over was my apps. When I look in iTunes, the only backups it displays now are from last night, AFTER the recovery. When I look under  C:\Users\...\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup it displays one that was 30 minutes older, but still only from after the recovery. Losing all my music was bad enough, but I had various important memos stored on my phone, not to mention the complete loss of all my contacts,etc.
    WHERE DID ALL MY PRIOR BACKUPS GO? How do I get this crucial data back on my phone? Please help!

  • Time machine all recent backups missing after reboot

    I accidentally deleted an important file on my mac, and when i opened time machine, i discovered that my it couldn't be found wirelessly. The green light was still on the front of the device but my mac couldn't locate it.
    I'm not sure exactly how long it has been since timecapsule made a backup, but i have a clear memory of it working about 3 months ago.
    I rebooted it and now its running, and has backed up.
    My problem is when i go into the "star wars screen" to view past backups, the only backups are from today and then next most recent are from July 2012 when i first bought the time capsule, everything else in between has disappeared.  It definitely had 2013 backups.
    Are the backups from 2013 still there and can't be seen, or have they been deleted permanently?

    I presume then you upgraded to Mavericks?
    It has a nasty habit of doing this.
    If not on Mavericks please tell me what OS you are on.
    Did you search by Finder.. after mounting the sparsebundle.. ie do not use Time Machine directly.
    I know this is silly question .. but if you deleted the file is it in Trash??
    If you deleted from Trash an immediate recovery is possible at times.. you will need to purchase a recovery software unless your are good with the CLI.

    If it is deleted weeks ago then recovery is unlikely as the area of the drive will have been written over.

  • Full Backup - missing Applications

    I have been doing a Full backup on a fairly regular Basis ever since getting into the Blackberry Community.  The old is my second Blackberry and so far I thought everything was running smoothly.
    I recently suffered a Catastrophe while doing an Upgrade that rendered my Phone Useless...  Everything was gone...  And to this day I don't know what happened...
    I thought I was SAFE...  I had JUST done a full backup only an hour before doing the upgrade...  Something I always do...
    Well when I finally got the phone "Working" and tried to do a restore I got back all my Data...  Yippee..!!   But none of the APPS I had installed over the time I owned the phone were there...  THEY were never restored.
    What is the story here..??  Am I doing something wrong in my Backups or did I do something wrong in the restore.??  In either case I had to down load apps One at a time and reinstall them which wasn't easy  because I didn't know the Names of all of them...
    What do I need to do to keep this from happening again...  HOw do I backup the Applications from my phone.
    Any Help is appreciated..

    Your normal backup using the BlackBerry Desktop Software does not backup third party applications.
    You can use BBSAK to do that, separately.

  • Complex problem - Time Machine backup missing "Applications" directory

    OK - I have a 2 or 3 year old iMac - Intel 1.83 mh / 4gb memory OS 10.5.7. System has been working fine and time machine seems to have been backing up fine. Today, we had a strange problem with the HD, probably some weird hit - it wouldn't boot, and I tried multiple times. I finally booted from the CD and used the disc utility to try and examine/repair the disk - no luck. I got an error message. I then went back to the CD and restored the entire system from Time Machine. The restore seem to work fine. The system re-booted OK --- EXCEPT --- there were no apps - and I mean zip. Aside from the finder, there was no Terminal app, couldn't find any apps in spotlight, and I couldn't see the app directory anywhere on Time Machine. I believe all of my data was restored OK. It's difficult for me to tell if somehow the apps were all deleted from time machine or they're there and just not visible.
    Anyway, I then restored the OS (10.5) from my CD, and it has restored the basic apps that come with it - mail, terminal, disk utility etc. However, I still can't see the apps on Time Machine.
    This is somewhat disconcerning since I had assumed that I could do a complete system restore with time machine.
    I'm open to any advice you might have.
    Signed - frustrated with Time Machine

    BaNzOmBiE wrote:
    I also noticed that on the time capsule there are more recent backups that I was not offered to restore by the mac os x boot disk.
    Maybe not. Did you do a full restore, by booting from your Leopard Install disc, and selecting Utilities then +*Restore from Backups+* from the menubar? If so, the list of backups you saw was not shown in your local time zone: it's in *U.S. Pacific Time,* (because you only specify your language when booting from the Leopard Install disc, not your local time zone).
    If you selected the last backup shown, then you got the last one, even if the date & time didn't seem right.
    I don't know what to do.
    Shall I start the recovery process from scratch using the same backup (and wait 13 more hours..)? Or maybe try to manually copy the applications directory on the restored mac and see what happens.
    Are you sure it's not there? I know that sounds silly, but be sure you're signed-on as an Admin user, check the top level of your internal HD, and other places. What happens if you click the Apple icon in your Menubar, then +System Preferences?+ It may be some sort of permissions problem -- if the restore utility can't restore something, it will fail, not just skip things.
    If all else fails, your best bet might be to do an Archive and Install, preserving users and settings, per the *Archive & Install* section of the Glenn Carter - Restoring Your Entire System / Time Machine *User Tip* at the top of this forum.
    Then use the normal Time Machine app to restore the other apps.
