"Bad" colors/banding when going into Edit mode with Canon RAW files

Just got my iLife '06 suite yesterday and ran into something very disturbing: something wrongwith the colors of RAW files once you go into editing mode. In the library view, they're fine. Try to edit one, and after a few seconds, there's a final refresh of the image window that heavily alters and bands the colors. (Looks almost like a poor conversion down to 256 colors or less - it's that bad).
This is happening on Canon 300D and 20D raw files, and did NOT happen with iPhoto 5. The RAW files open up and display just fine in Preview (as well as 3rd party apps) - problem is in iPhoto 6 only. I've already sent in a bug report - has anyone else tried double-clicking on a RAW file to go into Edit mode yet?

I use Huey from Pantone to calibrate my monitor for consistancy in different lighting situations and across applications. But the same effect happens by choosing any one of the non-standard monitor calibrations.
Try this:
Choose a RAW photo and monitor calibratioin that causes the banding and discoloration.
Open the RAW photo in Edit mode and wait the couple of seconds for banding to appear.
Next, adjust the image size slider so that scroll bars appear at the bottom and right side of the photo. It doesn't take much. Notice the banding disappears!
Now grab one of the scroll bars and move it. Observe the banding and discoloration. And, when you release the scroll bar the banding disappears again.
I don't remember this happening with iPhoto 5.
I think it has something to do with the display
calibration. After I first saw this I switched back
to my default iMac G4 profile, and the problem wasn't
there anymore. I'm not sure what the difference is. I
set up several different profiles, each with
different choices for Advanced, White Point and
Gamma, and some trigger this banding, and some do
not.
Anybody have any similar experiences?

PXI-8431 not going into receive mode with VB6

I am using a PXI-1045 chassis with a PXI-8431 RS422/485 card and communicating via a VB6 program
The output of the PXI-8431 RS485 module works OK when it is in send mode, the signal levels are approx 1v and 3v for high and low, but when it is in receive mode the outputs remain at 1v and 3v instead of going into passive mode and both lines floating at approx 2v with approx 300mV differential as they should. This means when the remote devices send, the amplitude of the signal is approx half as they are competing with the PXI module, and that the centre point of the two signals are at 1v and 3v respectively. Our software does not receive the signals from the PXI module which is consistent with my theory that it is still in send mode and taking control of the lines, or maybe it has changed it to 4 wire mode.
I have swapped over the PXI card and the remote cards with our good system and the problem does not move.
I have eliminated ALL the hardware on the new ring by replacing it with a 67 Ohm resistor on the pins of a 9 way D connector plugged onto the PXI card directly. With a scope I can see that the new system is not going into passive mode, but with the same connector the old system works OK.
The only difference I can see between the 6 old rigs we have that do work and the 2 new ones that do not work is the new ones use the the NI-XNET-PXI-8513 and the old ones use the PXI_8464 CAN card. Could this software be conflicting? Is there any other updates to the NI software that could be causing it?

I've had a check to see if we have any known software conflict issues with those cards but it all seems fine, it could be that the Windows Driver layer is causing some issues. If you nip into Device Manager and go to the properties of the 8431 you should be able to change it to 2-wire mode from those settings then re-run the program.
Also does the program throw any errors at all in terms of device resources when trying to move from send to receive mode?
What versions of NI-VISA and NI-Serial do you currently have installed?

Add available taskflows without going into Edit Mode

Hi All,
I am stuck with a client requirement. Let me tell you the problem.
We are developing a WebCenter portal application for two types of users customer and partner.
Suppose i have created 10 taskflows. Out of 10 TFs, 4 are mandatory (common) which we have to enforce the users to see after login. Now out of rest 6 TFs, customer user can add 3 TFs and partner users can add another 3 TFs. The TFs which the user can add should be listed down (by name) on the right side of page. Say if i am a customer user then i can see 4 mandatory TFs and rest 3 TF checkboxes will be available for me to add (On the right side of page). If i added the 5th one then only two TFs should remain for me to be added further. The main problem i am facing is the user don't want to go to edit mode otherwise all TFs he/she is entitled to view as per their user group, they could have added it.
How to show the remaining taskflows according to the security group of users in view mode itself.
Let me know if you need any more clarification on understanding my problem.

GDM going into fallback mode with fglrx

I've installed Arch linux a couple of times to have a play around with it, and I've really enjoyed it so yesterday I installed Arch linux again, this time with the intention of using it as my main OS. During the installation I configured pacman to use the [xorg111] and [catalyst] repos and subsequently installed X.org 1.11 with the latest Catalyst drivers which unfortunately don't yet support X.org 1.12. I then tested X.org using xdm and ran fglrxinfo in one of the xterms. This showed that the drivers were working correctly, so I installed gnome and the full gnome-extra which includes gdm, and configured gdm to launch automatically in inittab. I rebooted my computer and gdm started in fall-back mode with no option of switching to anything else. I logged in to gnome and ran fglrxinfo again which showed that the drivers weren't working in gdm/gnome. It must have been using the mesa drivers or something because everything was very choppy.
I tried recompiling fglrx for my kernel and checked that everything in rc.conf and inittab was configured correctly, but I couldn't solve the issue so I uninstalled gnome and thought I'd give KDE a go just to see if the issue was gnome-related or system-wide. I'm using KDE now and it's working great with the Catalyst drivers. No extra configuration was required beyond changing the default login manager to kdm in inittab. However, I do like some aspects of the new Gnome 3.4 and so I'd still like to give it a go; I haven't yet decided on which DE I'll be using full time.
Does anybody have a clue about what the conflict might be between fglrx and gdm? If I can't sort that out then I can't consider using gnome as my DE.
I'm open to the idea of installing gnome alongside KDE so I can try them both on the same installation but I'm concerned about the menus in each of the DEs becoming cluttered with applications from the other DE. Is there any way in which I could sort this out, perhaps automatically?

WiFi turns off, too , when going into Airplane Mode

Hi all,
not sure if this was the case before OS4 but I have noticed that when connected to Wifi and then switching to air-plane mode , Wifi will turn off as well but works again after turning it back on. (Air-plane mode will also stay turned on)
Is this a bug or normal behaviour?

That is how it has always been (well not always, original you couldn't have Wifi and Airplane at same time).
Process is always turn on Airplane, then you have to manually turn back on WiFi.

Macbook air keeps disconnecting from internet when going to sleep mode

New macbook air keeps losing Internet connection when going into sleep mode. Have tried deleting and re adding network and adding DNS 8.8.8.8 still is disconnecting.
Also, since Lion update 2 days ago Internet is very sluggish

The current fix is to turn off sleep mode or use an Ethernet cable.

HP Envy shutting down after going into sleep mode

Hi. I'm not sure where to post this so I'll try it here.
My laptop shut downs automatically when it goes into sleep mode. Not right away when going into sleep mode. Maybe like an hour later after going into sleep mode.
I'm not sure it's overheating because it never shuts down while I'm actually using the laptop.
Do you guy have any idea how to fix this?

I would suggest you take a look at advanced power settings. It can seem like the notebook is turning off when it is actually just hibernating. You can set it to not hibernate.
1. Windows key + Q to open the Search Bar
2. Type "power"
3. Click Settings under the Search Bar
4. Select Power Options from the results on the left.
5. In Power Options, Click Change when the computer sleeps, on the left.
6. Set the Put the computer to sleep setting so that it fits your usage best.
7. Click Change advanced power settings, at the bottom.
8. Expand Sleep and expand Hibernate after. If you want you can change the hibernation setting to Never by typing "Never" into the minutes field. See attached picture. You can do this for battery and/or plugged in.
9. Click Apply to save changes.
If you don't already shut it down periodically, I would suggest shutting it down at least 2-3 times a week if you use it daily. Leaving the computer running continuously can shorten its lifespan. Hard drive failures and motherboard issues are seen much more often on machines that are left running constantly. Computers get bogged down and run slowly when the memory is full. Memory only clears out and resets itself when the computer is shut down. Here is a link explaining more about memory accumulation and hardware aging.

Apple tv loses home sharing when my computer goes into sleep mode

Just recently, my Apple TV says that home sharing is off when my computer goes into sleep mode. It never used to do that - any suggestions?

I have the same problem here. Always back-ed up with Time Machine (OSX 10.9 Mavericks) to Western Digital drives. MyBooks, MyPassport 1TB (USB 3.0), all works fine. Time Machine is actually doing back-ups overnight. Since I got this new 2TB MyPassport Ultra USB 3.0 it's working perfect during days, but every morning when I wake up the MacBook from sleep, I get this annoying error:
Time Machine couldn’t complete the backup to “MyPassportUltra”.
Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder.
Latest successful backup: Today, 02:27 am
I'm also not able to write anything to that drive, or unmount it. It stil shows up in Finder, and I'm able to read all the data perfectly fine. When I do a Disk Utility Verify Disk directly after, I get this:

I don't click Repair Disk, as this will probably screw up my partition. Instead, I have to unplug the USB cable (which is bad for the drive, there's no time to park the drive's heads) and plug it in again. After clicking Backup Now, Time Machine immediately starts backing up, and the drive works fine the rest of the day.
I contacted WD Support, and they are sending me a booster USB cable. As System Information reports, the drive receives enough power though:
Current Available (mA): 900
Current Required (mA): 224

I am using the Optical Out from the Apple TV to my receiver, the Apple TV is hard Wired to the Network, the IPAD is Wirelessly attached to the network (it continues to play the Audio Stream). When the Apple TV is turned back on it resumes playing once I manual select it for output from the IPAD. All device are on current releases of software. I have no Video hooked up to the Apple TV. How do I correct this?

Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.
There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first. Networks that have inherent issues can be seen to work differently with different versions of the same software. You might also try moving the Apple TV away from other electrical equipment.

Why is it that when I plug my ipod touch into the USB port of my Peugeot 508SW that the device goes into repeat mode and the same song is played continuosly?

The car handbook certainly states that Ipods can be connected although it doesn't specifically mention which operating systems are supported. The car system is recognising the ipod and playing one tune continuously but you cannot switch it to a different song.

When trying to restore my Iphone it goes into recovery mode

I recent just upgraded my IPhone 4s to 5s. When I synced it to my computer it transfered eveything from my old phone to the new one which I didn't want. So when I tried to restore it to factory settings it went to recovery mode. I can get it out of recovery mode but it just goes back to way it was. How can I restore it with out going into recovery mode.

You didn’t specify where the beeping noise is coming from.
If it’s coming through your speakers, you could try to update your audio drivers since it’s possible they’re incorrectly sending a signal to the speakers as the audio chipset enters standby.
If the noise is coming from the motherboard, you’ll need to take a closer look at your system’s configuration or contact the manufacturer.

Ford Sync and my iphone4s are having one major issue. When I receive a call, it goes into privacy mode. I have been on Ford's web site and no one knows the answer. It is just when I receive calls. What to do? I have used a Blackberry Storm 2 in this same vehicle and no problems.

I decided to try to do two things this morning to resolve this privacy problem. The first is, I restored my wife;s phone from itunes--in spite of the fact that the Apple tech at the Genius Bar in Tampa said that reloading the firmware is not the problem and it must be Ford. This took about 15 minutes to download, restore and verify. One must resist the temptation to disconnect the phone because I had a popup by the system tray ( I'm using Win7) that said I can now use the phone but itunes was still doing stuff so I just let it do it's thing until it (itunes) told me to use the phone. Went down to the car and my privacy issue is resolved.
I also went to syncmyride to download the version checker. A word of advice this does not work well if at all on google Chrome. I went to Explorer and it worked fine. I was on a chat line about a week ago and was told that google Chrome will work with syncmyride.com. So much for their knowledge.

When I open Firefox to do some browsing, my computer goes into safe mode. When I close Firefox browser, then it goes back to normal. I know there has to be a simple fix, but I have not found it.

Check that you do not run Firefox in compatibility mode or with a reduced screen resolution.
You can check that in the "Compatibility" tab in the Properties via the right-click context menu of the Firefox desktop shortcut.<br />
Make sure that all items are deselected in the "Compatibility" tab of the Properties window.
