Bad disk image on access1?
Has anybody here had success using the Solaris 8 Device Configuration
Assistant (boot disk) image published on access1.sun.com as S28DCA_FCS?
I'm trying to mount it on a Solaris 8 system using lofi (VERY cool new
feature!), and it doesn't appear to be mountable. I compared its behavior
to that of an older boot disk on access1, for Solaris 7:
# file S28DCA_FCS

Well, THAT wasn't pretty. Here's what it should have said:

Encrypted, sparse disk image stored on WebDAV server: problems mounting
My goal is to have secure, encrypted storage to back up my computer to a remote site. The remote site is an internet hosting provider who provides a lot of disk space and bandwidth, and also serves up WebDAV, for a very small price.
I have created a 100GB sparse disk image, with encryption, and stored it on the remote server. I then mount the directory containing the sparseimage (which is itself password protected using .htaccess) using WebDAV. My plan is now to mount the disk image, and use rsync to copy changes on my computer to the disk image.
This worked perfectly when I tested with a small sparseimage. It was interesting how the OS seems to buffer the changes in chunks: rsync appears to be copying a lot of files super fast, then it stalls as network bandwith suddenly throttles up for a while, and they take turns this way.
Unfortunately, after copying a few hundred MBs into the image, I am now having trouble.
First, when I try to mount the disk image, I see an enormous amount of data start transferring over the network. It literally saturates my broadband connection for at least an hour (I haven't been able to go longer yet). It seems to first download at top speed for a while, then switches to uploading at top speed for awhile. During this time, I notice that a mount_webdav process is consuming large perentages of CPU. However I can't see anything else going on at this point -- the disk image isn't mounted yet, all this thrashing seems to be from the process of the image trying to mount.
So first question: is this normal? Does anyonw know what actually happens when you issue "hdiutil attach" on encrypted sparse images? Does it have to touch and read through everything in the image once or twice? Maybe this is just a Bad Idea™
Second: the webdav server always ends up getting disconnected during this process before the image actually gets mounted. Do you think I'm trying to do something that tests, and exceeds, the limits of WebDAV?
Thanks a million for any help!
PowerBook, 1.33 GHz G4, Aluminum, 17" Mac OS X (10.4.8) The remote server is DebianA follow up to my MS word document. I found that I created the file in MS word 2000, and I used the Apple File Security for OS 9 to encrypt it. I can't remember the password, and I do not find anything in the key chain listing.
I have Pages 08, but I don't think I can use it if I can't remember the password to unlock this old document. Is there a program to decrypt this without a password?
Thanks,

DVD burned from a disk image won't work on different computers???
Under the directions for how to burn a DVD from an disk image, the Apple Help document (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93006) says this:
"Note: When burning a disc from a disk image, the burned disc will have the same format as the disk image. If you need a disc that will work on different computers, burn the disc in the Finder."
Does this mean that the DVDs that I am burning from the disk image won't be able to be played on a PC? a Mac other than mine? Neither? WHAT? I am planning to sell the DVDs of a workshop I present -- to people who may be playing them on PCs. Should I not be using this method (burning from a disk image) to burn my DVDs?

Video DVDs are in the UDF format. The disk image you created is in the UDF format. When you use Disk Utility to burn the disk image to writable media, the new discs will be in UDF format and all will be well.
You are doing things correctly.
BTW, unless you have an external burner with lots of cooling, if you expect to use the burner in your Mac (which DOESN'T have lots of cooling), it's a good idea to pause between discs to allow the burner to cool down. (BTW, this comment is based on the reported results of several people in the forum. If you don't allow the cool down timer, you will start to create 'bad' discs. Also it is VERY important that you reduce the burn speed in Disk Utility to 4x or lower in order to create discs with maximum compatability with players. (You should see a way to change the speed in Disk Utility afterr you have inserted a disc.)

What's the best way to create disk images?
of 300GB hard drives or partitions?
Disk utility is failing for me with an input/output error.
A typical example:
I have a new HFS+ 500GB external FW 800 drive that I am using a destination.
I will boot from my original 'install' DVD and then open up disk utility to start the disk image creation.
Note: my source is my "Macintosh HD" partition that is around 300GB.
Everything looks like it is running well, then a couple hours into it, it fails... something like:
"cannot create img.. blah input/output error".
Note: Verify Disk shows no errors on the source.
One guess is that the img creation process is failing after I leave the computer and perhaps my computer falls asleep. I tried setting the 'Energy Saver' prefs in the systems prefs, but of course, since I'm running off the install DVD, I wasn't able to get into the prefs.
Anyway, ultimately, I need to create periodic disk images of my macs.. so what are people using to do this?
Thanks for the comments!
DonovanEric, Carbon Copy Cloner is what I was leaning towards. The owner says his guess is that there are bad blocks on my HD, and since Disk Utility is block based, that it is failing where CCC is file based, and will just skip files that are corrupted or that it can't copy.
I guess I'll roll with that for now.. but it would be nice if the Disk Utility logs spit out a more descriptive log.. instead of "could not create disk image, input/output error".
Thanks!

Disk image Restore returns "Could not validate source - error 254"
I had backed up an older G4 with a disk image of the boot disk. I was having severe problems so I reformatted the boot drive and started a restore (using disk utility from startup disk). The restore started fine and ran a while but then "stalled." The "progress" bar stopped and the system just kept "hitting" the Utility DVD install disk non-stop (as shown by disk access light).
Now when I try again, I immediately get a "Restore Failure - Could not validate source - error 254"
The disk image being restored is on a hard drive. I copied it to another drive and tried again with the same result.
This is being done on an old G4 Tower, dual 1 GHz PPC under 10.5.8
Comments?
(This won't kill me as all my data files are also on my MBP, I just don't want to have to reinstall all my apps, setups, etc.)Yes, for my "real" machine (my Intel MBP) I have images, clones, and Time Machine Backups not to mention my data files written to DVD. I've got at least triplicate backup. This was a old machine I was setting up for a specific purpose. I'm not losing any data but I just didn't want to have to reload apps and such. But guess I have no alternative. Thanks for the tip. I had never used the "scan for restore option" before so I learned something. Usually I just trust my multiple backup method so if one source is bad, no big deal. Thanks baltwo!

Unable to open disk image - with diskmounter get error "couldn't find diskimages-helper!"

=========== =======
TOTAL 320.4MJust ran into the same problem suddenly - checked /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskImages.framework/ and in the Versions folder there was a bad symbolic link of Current to a non-existent folder D. The only version was in a folder named A, so in /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskImages.framework/Versions/ I did the following:
sudo rm Current
sudo ln -s A Current
then cd .. to /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskImages.framework/ and
sudo rm Resources
(which was now a bad symlink to the previous /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskImages.framework/Versions/Current/Resourc es/), and then created a new symlink:
sudo ln -s Versions/Current/Resources/ Resources
Went and tried to mount a .dmg image and it was successful, and could also run Disk Utility again.
I have no idea why the /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskImages.framework/Versions/Current symlink was pointing to a non-existent "D" folder, or what process did it, but this fixed the problem.
nb: Booting into Recovery Mode and running Disk Utility from there, repairing the disk and permissions did nothing to solve the problem, had to do it manually. If there was more than one version folder, you would have to determine which is the correct one to link Current to. -
Disk Image Setup on Time Capsule
I currently use my 2TB Time Capsule as a backup for one laptop and for my iTunes media files (which I periodically back up to an external hard drive manually). I'm planning on adding my wife's laptop's backups to the mix and would like to reserve room for the growing folder of music plus other data files. After some research, it appears that the best way to keep Time Machine from filling all available space with backups from our computers would be to use disk images. I'm considering two different tactics:
1. Create a disk image with a capacity of, say, 1TB to which I'd move the library (I'm assuming that Time Machine will respect the capacity even if the image isn't full, right?). The issue I have with this is that I don't want it to affect how iTunes accesses the files wirelessly. Is there a particular way I should create the disk image so that iTunes simply access the files as it does now (i.e., no encryptions, passwords, turning into sparsebundle files, etc.), but also maintains the capacity in such a way that the backups won't encroach?
2. Keep the library in its existing folder on the Time Capsule, but create a bunch of empty disk images that will keep the sparsebundle backups from encroaching. I could then delete the empty disk images as the need for room increases in the library.
Any thoughts on the best way to do this, or on showstoppers I haven't thought of? Assuming either approach works, I'm also looking for advice on format, partition, and image format specifications for setting up the disk image(s) in Disk Utility. I'm assuming I can avoid the encryption/password problems by simply leaving encryption marked "none."daveb74 wrote:
if I were going to use one of these drives as my primary iTunes media location, I'd either have to leave it plugged into the TC all the time or manually attach it every time I wanted to access those files. The former seems like a bad idea
Not really. Running constantly is one of the least-stressful things that a disk drive can do, much easier on it than regular starting and stopping.
Do you know of any reason why the disk image idea wouldn't work, specifically?
I wouldn't put your iTunes files into a disk image unless you were sure you were only going to mount that disk image from one Mac at a time. I'd expect the mounting of a read-write disk image on multiple Macs to cause trouble.
Putting empty disk image files on the Time Capsule disk would accomplish what you're trying to do (reserve space so that Time Machine doesn't consume it all), but that requires a fair amount of management on your part to monitor the space usage.
If you decide to go with disk images, be sure that you don't use a "sparse" variety. You want the type that initially reserves the entire amount of requested disk space. -
Disk Utility fails to create encrypted disk image
When creating a disk image using 256 bit encryption and a purely numeric password longer than 13 characters the following message appears:
Unable to create "ABC.dmg." (error -60008)
the error happens upon typing the 14th consecutive number into the Password field. I have created images under the same conditions in the past, Not sure if this is caused by Lion.Looks like one of the drives is bad.
While it passed being zeored with Disk Utility, it failed about 15 minutes into a 'Certify' using SoftRAID.
Now waiting on a replacement drive from Newegg. -
Can a use a partitioned external hard drive to create a disk image? I tried, doesn't seem to work using disk manager.
OK, it's very bad computing to use a backup disk for anything but a backup. The reason being is if/when the HD crashes you will have lost not only all your backup but the data files. While I commend you for wanting redundant backup, you really need separate EHDs for doing so. Format each EHD using Disk Utility to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) using the GUID parttition. When you connect, OS X will ask if you want to use that drive as a Time Machine backup drive, select yes and then let it backup. On the second EHD format the same way however do not use TM as a backup, this time I'd suggest an app such as SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner to make a clone of the internal HD. Leave both EHDs connected and TM will backup new or changed files automatically on a hourly basis. The clone you will need to set to backup on the schedule you want. For example I have my SuperDuper EHD set to backup only changed or updated files at 2AM every day.
The advantage of a clone is that if the computers internal HD crashes you can boot from a clone and continue working, TM will not do that but it's great for keeping an archive of all files. So if you want a version of a file from many months ago, TM will help you locate and restore it. -

I already tried C12, no luck. I did read C17, but that did not help either.
I agree that Apple should really spend a bit more time on ensuring this common problem is resolved more quickly
But where to do you sent this request to? Doesn't seem easy to find a person to send it to.
I dumped by corporate wIn-pc environment that I was forced to use for the past ...forever. Have been delighted with the Mac experience..... for 24 months..but these type of un-resolved matters with terse error messages reminds me of the bad old days.
I had the problem 2 weeks ago and solved it by "clicking about" after reading the forum Can't remember what i did though. V. V. V. frustrating when the Mac is a business tool. I don't want to be a mechanic, I want to be a driver.
Thanks again for your help -
How do you make a bootable install partition from a disk image of an install disk.
I have an iMac g4 running Leopard and would like to install OS X 10.3 on a different partition Leopard is on. However the super drive in the iMac will not read the disk I have, so I used my MacBook Pro to make a disk image of the install disk to use to install on the iMac. I do not know how to make the disk image into a bootable partition so I can install 10.3. The person I bought it from has already created a partition of the Leopard install disk and it is bootable but I do not know how he did this. Please help me. Thanks!

Could be the cd is bad. Could be a bad cd reader.
I' not sure what you are trying to do.
To install,
-- you need to boot from a cd.
-- copy a working installation from another partition. try carbon-copy-cloner
-- could try target disk mode. There is a cd sharing mode.

Disk images won't unmount/eject for admin user, DVDs & iDisk also affected
This problem started when I was on Tiger, and seemed to follow me onto Leopard.
It only affects me, the primary user on my Mac. *One other user on the computer; she also has admin level access and does not have any of these problems.*
Here's the deal:
*Once mounted, disk images won't eject/unmount.*
- Dragging to the trash can doesn't work. The eject icon appears, but nothing happens.
- Ctrl-click does not show Eject as an option when highlighting the mounted image.
- CMD-E doesn't work
- EJect doesn't appear as an option in the finder menu
- Clicking on the Eject button in the sidebar of the Finder window doesn't work.
- I've logged out, rebooted, repaired permission, and installed a new OS (clean install of 10.5, then did the import of my old user settings. Since I had the problem in Tiger, it's clear the problem followed me, but what the heck causes it?)
*The only way to unmount/eject a disk image is to use the Disk Utility Program.*
*DVDs also can only be ejected via Disk Utility*
The iDisk connection can only be killed by opening Activity Monitor and killing the webdavfs_agent process.
Would love some help. I've searched a lot and have a fair amount of folks with this problem, but no real solution. That'll work; however, then the OP has to reset all of his preferences. Easier would be to log into the newly created admin account, backup the bad account's folder, delete the bad account, selecting the save data option (which is stored in /Users/Deleted Users/ as a disk image), recreate the bad account using the same username/password combo, log out and back into the recreated original account. Mount the saved data dmg file in /Users/Deleted Users/, open the /Library/Preferences/ folder from the saved data, open the current /Users/restored account/Library/Preferences/ folder, and slowly copy plist files from the saved data folder to the current one. Log out and back in to ensure there's no conflict and things still work correctly. Resolving these kinds of conflicts is a laborious process, but not as laborious as resetting preferences or even remembering what you set weeks, months, or years ago.

Disk Images Fail To Mount - Code Overrun
I'm having a problem with mounting disk images on my iBook G3 500 running OS X 10.4.8. (same problem with 10.4.6. and 10.4.7). I can only seem to mount one disk image per re-boot. After mounting one, the rest give me codec overrun errors until I restart, and then I can mount one more. I have re-installed Tiger on this computer multiple times, with the exact same problem everytime. I just recently installed a new hard drive - same problems. I'm also unable to install software updates via the built-in software update utility (bad checksum error). Any ideas?
Anyone have any ideas? I'm also having problems with programs frequently quitting when I'm right in the middle of doing something.

We're using a PXI-8185 for an autonomous experiment. We would like
to make a backup image of the disk with Norton Ghost so that if the disk
crashes, we can get a duplicate disk running quickly. I've done this
previously with the old Power Quest Disk Image program. (Which Symantec
bought and discard, eliminating their competition. Ya gotta love Symantec.)
Anyway, I've made a ghost image of a test computer using a spare
disk for the 8185, and that boots fine on the test computer. Hence
Ghost and the disk both seem to work. But when I make an image of the
8185, it won't boot. After the bios screen, it just hangs on a blank
screen. I'm guessing that NI uses some kind of disk imaging technology
to preload the 8185's, so is it possible
that that program is
incompatible with Ghost? (Ghost writes hidden ID codes to the disk, so
there could well be program-specific subtleties.)
So, the big question: has anyone made a backup image of an 8185 and
sucessfully restored and used it? Any suggestions on what might be
going wrong?
Thanks for any help. I know this is a bit distant from LabVIEW, but
this group certainly has a lot of experience with PXI hardware, etc.

Dave

There are 10 kinds of people: those who understand binary,
and those who don't.from what you put that they did to your machine they replaced the hdd and used the recovery media to reimage the drive back to factory. hdd and other hardware failures either happen very early or very late in their lives. so it is not uncommon to have a hdd that fails right out of the gate but it is much more common for them to fail later. as for getting your old hdd back i wouldnt count on it. it has probably already been sent away to be recycled.
you may not have had any problems at all with the hdd but from what you wrote that toshiba said it had multiple bad sectors. if these bad sectors are too big they will just replace it since those parts of the disc cant be used.

Hi everyone, I am currently trying to back up some discs that I have, and the first 2 did so with no problem. I am saving them to a 1tb external hd. However now every time I try to create a new disk image it starts and goes for around 10 minutes then I get this message "Unable to create "Disk5.cdr" (file too large)"
I am using disk utility and do not understand what is going on. My external hd has more than enough room, but I keep getting this message with every disk I try. The discs themselves are only 3-4gb so I'm really confused and frustrated.
Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.FMiron wrote:

If I create a .dmg file can I still burn to a disc later for play in all dvd players?
I missed the point about the original content already being on optical discs. Some questions:
- Are they commercial DVDs? Many of those are protected from being copied.
- If they are on DVD-R or DVD+R media, how old are those discs? Optical discs can go bad, which could cause problems trying to copy them.
- Are they in good condition (no scratches or fingerprints)? If not, I'd try cleaning them. Here's some advice on how to do that:
