Bad video quality over WiFi?

iChat seems to be trying to out-think me by lowering iChat video quality when it's on WiFi, but using great video when I'm on ethernet. This seems silly, since I have great WiFi connectivity, but I can't seem to disable the behavior. Does anyone know how to disable iChat's WiFi preferences?
More details:
I'm on an 802.11g WiFi network through an AEBS with "full bars" and the quality looks terrible over Bonjour to someone else on the LAN (wired or wireless). As soon as I disable AirPort and plug in to wired Ethernet, making no other changes other than restarting iChat, the quality looks fantastic.
My WiFi speed is always in the tens of megabits per second, with ping latencies below 1ms to the other clients, so it should be plenty fast.
Ideas?

I have been using iChat exclusively over WiFi (Airport Extreme) from my iMac, and via Ethernet and WiFi from my Powerbook. I have not had any quality issues when connecting in this manner. Connections within my local network from WiFi to WiFi, as well as to outside connections over Broadband have all been of very good quality. Now if I can just get it all working again following the upgrade to Leopard 10.5.1.
FYI: I have even used iChat AV on Tiger using DUN on my Treo650 (Sprint), which worked fine as well.

  • Still bad video quality

even is catalyst cs 5.5 two of my problems do not resolve.
bad video quality in fullscreen. i have some videos for offline view (768x576 @ 2600 kbps) but still fullscreen view is messed up, all blocky, not proper video interpolation. in vlc or any other player the flv file looks fine!
the videos also have a 4:3 ratio and show white borders in fullscreen on a 16:9 screen in letterbox, how can make the borders black?
    is there any solution?

    Hi
    as example
Creating a PAL movie in iMovie HD 6 then import this into a NTSC iDVD project
    • Works but with a losy quality
I do use JESDeinterlacer3.2.2 and let this do the PAL to NTSC conversion
Now burned as an NTSC iDVD project
    • Best result possibly without buying PRO-applications for $$$$$$$
This way should work the other way around too.
Most modern PAL DVD-players can playback NTSC (if TV is old in Bl/W)
Most modern NTSC DVD-players can't playback PAL
If playbacked on a Mac PAL or NTSC is of no interest.

  • Bad video quality on Atom over Internet, but not o...

I have an Asus netbook with a 1.66GHz Atom, 1GB DDR3, and XP.  The video quality when in a call over the Internet is almost always bad, and Skype complains the computer is "slow".  There is no virus scanner or any other garbage running that sucks up resources.  I keep it lean.
So I tried using a different computer to make the call; an 8 year old Sempron laptop, also with XP and 2.2GHz or close to that.  Video quality is great.  So it's obviously a computer performance issue, right?
It gets stranger.  I set up a video call between these two computers over my LAN (i.e. within the same house).  Video quality is great on both.
The results have been similar over a span of a year or more, calling people in different parts of the country, and even dropping Wifi and using a cable.
So what causes Skype to think the computer is slow when video calling over the Internet, but not when calling another computer on the same LAN?  I have a theory, but I'll hold that thought for right now.

  • Video Quality over 3g and Wifi

I just noticed that the iphone has a wonderful screen!! THats until......
You go to the youtube app and decide to watch the videos you just uploaded from your iphone! Or any video for that fact......
try this watch a video over 3g........... nice and grainy huh?
Then watch the same video over wifi........right now you might say ***
Thats what I said....even more embarrassing having a friend pull out their iphone 3gs and the video looks exactly like it does on wifi on the iphone 4 minus the pixel couont.
Whos to blame? This seems unbelievable. I know of the Truveo app....
But really is google flexing their muscle? Att? For now when people ask to see my amazing screen. I have to show them a video i bought from itunes and not on youtube........
    SMart!!!!!

Instead of using the app go to m.YouTube.com. You can watch videos in HD on 3G or wifi. Then just bookmark to your homescreen and use that instead of the YouTube app. I never use the YouTube app. It looms like crap.

  • Bad video quality of final product when viewing on computer in full screen

It looks like a picture does when you blow it up and it's a low quality image. Everything I'm reading says the problem would be with the video capture...but I have the same bad quality when I'm viewing the menu! Around all the text on the menu, it's fuzzy and same with my video on the menu. So are my video clips in the movie itself.
I have tried playing it on Windows Media Player, the apple DVD program, and WinDVD and I get the same problem when I view it on full screen.
I assume my family will mostly be playing it on a TV. Do you think it will play properly or worse on a TV? I don't actually have a DVD player myself to test it out. Any suggestions on why this could be happening?
    Thanks!

when I started using iDVD, one of the hardest adjustments for me to make was video quality on TV screen vs on computer screen. (I am used to satellite to S-Video TV and HD screens on my computer.)
My camera it a miniDV, and playback via SVideo to an Svideo TV screen is awesome.
I was sorely disappointed when I played the same tape back on the computer. It was grainy/fuzzy, etc. Same with the DVD I made.
But when I played the DVD back on the TV, the image quality was the same as when I connected the camera to the TV - crisp, sharp, video and text.
I've since burned numerous DVDs, and the result is always the same - blah on the computer, sharp on the TV.
As someone else in this thread stated, the average TV is low-res compared to the computer screen.
If I recall the spec correctly, standard NTSC is 240 line, SVideo is up to 500 line. HD is 720 line and higher...ergo an NTSC source is roughly 1/2 the resolution of the typical CPU screen, or 1/3 the resolution of low end HD screens. So yes, NTSC output on your computer screen will always be fuzzy compared to your TV screen.
I think you will likely be very pleased with the DVD when you playback on your TV.

  • Bad video quality with AMS and Citrix

Some clients connects to our network with vpn Citrix and get the screen presentet from Citrix.
The video quality is bad, choppy and sound out of sync.
Is it possible to set a specific quality for clients connecting with Citrix in AMS?
Do you have a best practice when using Citrix.

    Hi Drago
It is very bad situation. Toshiba with every notebook must offer functioning product and because of that offer tested drivers. Those drivers are adapted for each notebook model and also have protecting function. That means the graphic card will not be forced to run on the highest level.
As you can see with original driver you have problems playing some games. For me it is nothing unusual for mobile computers. Problem is that every modified driver is not supported and tested by notebook manufacturer. I recommend you to use tested Toshiba driver. At the end maybe you must make compromise between gaming and watching movies.
By the way: are original DVD movies also so bad while you use preinstalled WinDVD?

  • Bad Video Quality - Help This Rookie

Hi - Thanks in advance for your help. I have some good MPEG4 video quality and when I watch it directly (through Quicktime) it looks great. My problem is that when I import it in to iMovie, it takes a serious video quality hit and looks terrible. Am I doing something wrong? Is there a better way to import it so that I dont lose the video quality?

    Howie,
I've been importing video into iMovie from old VHS tapes and DV. Sometimes it seems as though iMovie's quality is lower than what's on tape. Its possible that the preview/edit is lower quality for performance reasons?
Try rendering a 5 minute clip to your final output and check the resulting quality.

Sorry to hear you're experiencing an issue with YouTube videos on your device.
What is your software version? Are you using Wi-Fi or the mobile network to view the videos?
Have you done a reboot by pulling the battery?
Do you encounter any error with YouTube or just the resolution seems off?

    @vinashar,
I would recommend 3rd party apps such as Line or Skype for video calls ... As for future plans to implement video calls in the Lenovo dialer, I am not sure.
    Thanks

  • Really bad video quality on my Samsung D series 79...

    Hi,
I recently got a web camera for my Samsung D series 7900 LED TV.  I bought the newer VG-STC2000 camera to enable skype.  The good news is the camera seems to work good.  My macbook air which is receiving the video from the camera shows it very well.  (occasional skips and jumps, but nothing too horrible).  The problem is the video that is being received by the television.  While I've verified through computer clients that I can receive video on my home network quite well on a home desktop machine, the skype client on the TV seems to have a lot of trouble rendering a picture about 80% of the time.  I get garbled pictures.  It's almost as if the buffer in the Samsung can't keep up or can't handle network jitter.
here's a sample of what the TV picture looks like most of the time.
    http://www.freeimagehosting.net/tqchb
Areas of movement get distorted.  Any ideas on how to fix it?  Is it a problem with the Skype software?  My network settings?  (I have 30 Mbits down and 5 Mbits up at home through Time Warner Cable).  I have no packet loss, but moderate amounts of jitter when I measure my network with a speed test / voip simulator.

It's 100% reproducable.  It happens typically a minute or two into the call.  If the caller turns the camera off and then back on, the image clears up and then in a minute or two degrades again.  But it happens on every call.
Primary caller has been a Mac (using a macbook air with the built in facetime camera).  Skype version 5.8.0.1027.  The Mac has little trouble viewing the image from the samsung camera.  It skips every now and then, but quickly recovers and the audio has no problems.
I've replicated the error from the mac laptop with the laptop connected to my home network (the same network as the Samsung TV).  Only other variable is that the samsung tv is connected through wifi, but I've seen other complaints that say that hard wiring the tv doesn't seemt to fix it.
The network speed of the mac typically is over corporate lan speeds (can transfer a 6 gig file in about an hour).

  • Bad video quality via Quick Player and Apple TV

I have been watching videos via Quick Player from my MacBookPro and Apple TV for some time in excellent quality. Suddenly now the picture quality has dropped significantly
Quality is still good if I watch via I tunes, but Itunes does not import .avi videos
    How can I fix it?

there are many third party apps that will do it.
also, if you are able to get the video into itunes as it currently is, then you can right click on it and choose "create appletv version".

  • Premiere Pro CS3: bad video quality when exporting for YouTube

    Hi!
I'm a newbie to this forum and yes, I've looked for an answer before posting. I'm also pretty new to Premiere Pro and I hope that the problem I'm having is more my fault than Premiere's (it most likely is.)
I have project, a little YouTube-Video. But whenever I export it, the quality is really poor. I've also tried rendering it with Windows Movie maker and, strangely enough, the quality is much better and closer to the original file. My big question is: what am I doing wrong?
    Here are some additional info:
    Adobe Premiere Pro CS3
Windows 7 Professional, 32 Bit (PC)
The movie file was shot with a Sony DSC-W170 and is an .mpg file
    Video:
    640x480
    10418kBit/s (total: 10483 kBit/s)
    30fps
    Audio:
    64kBit/s
    Mono
    32kHZ
    Project settings: DV-Pal
    Standard-PAL-Video (4:3 Interlaced).
    48 kHz (16 Bit) Audio
I used the Adobe Media Encoder for the export, H.264/YouTube. I've also tried several other settings, but I never get as good a result as with the Windows Movie maker. Can anyone please tell me how I can fix this? (Maybe the quality of the video already suffers when I import the files into Premiere Pro? The video in the source and the cutting window is very blurry.)
Here you can see for yourself what it looks like:
File rendered with Adobe Premiere CS3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LTAyx6O27Dg
File rendered with Windows Movie Maker: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVeoUOfM_uo&feature=youtu.be
I hope somebody can help me. If you need additional info which I haven't provided, ask away. Thank you so much in advance for your replies!

    YT is set to privet.
Keep project settings and export settings same as camera.
Try H.264 (mp4) for export instead.

  • Bad video quality from iPhone videos on PC?

    Hello all,
I have been experiencing a fairly annoying problem.  I have a small library of videos taken on my iPhone 4S (iOS 5) which have been transferred to my PC (Windows 7).  I realize that these are .MOV files and Windows Media Player will not play them, but even the most up-to-date version of quicktime plays these videos very choppy.  What gives?  Is there another media player I can use to view these, or do I have to convert all of them?

After some googling Ive read that this is an issue others are having since they upgraded to IOS6, apparently videos played fine in 5.
Is there a way to undo the IOS6 update and restore the phone back to IOS5?

  • Bad video quality on primary screen in SLI set-up

    Hey all,
I've got this specific problem with my video cards. The color is absolutely horrible when i use my two 460GTX Hawk in SLI mode on a dual screen setup.
The strange thing is that this problem only is visible on the primary screen.
    Example primary screen :
    Example secondary screen :
I've tried a lot of different things :
    * Switch monitors => problem persisted with primary
    * Switch primary to secondary => problem persisted with primary monitor
    * Different monitor settings (color depth, resolution, frequency, ...) => problem persisted
    * Turn SLI off => problem solved
    * Turn Dual monitor off => problem solved (also in SLI mode)
It seems that when I want to have SLI and dual monitor this problem occurs.
    Some system specs :
    OS : Win 7 Home premium 64 bit SP1
    Nvidia driver : 301.42
    Vid card bios : 70.04.2E.00.04
    Motherboard : MSI P55A-GD65
    Motherboard bios : 1.6
Not sure what additional information you require...
    All tips are welcome ...
    Thanks in advance

Try MSI vga drivers for your card
