Basic Mac vs PC question and High Def Video

When it comes to the issue with editing High Def video I was under the impression that it is a matter of "computing Power". The reason I ask this is although I would love to transition to a mac I am able to buy a i7 based pc with a 1024MB video card for the same price it would cost me to buy a iMac with core 2 duo chip and a 256MB card. I realize I get afar superior monitor with imac but right now that is not the priority. The priority is running and editing High Def Movies. Thanks for your feedback

The graphics card itself probably won't make any difference (except on new Macs and software with Open CL support as it uses the idle power in the GPU to assist the CPU).
However, in your case, lots of ram, lots of hard drive space and a fairly decent CPU is what you require.

  • Re: high def video and software

I purchased a Sony High Def Video Camcorder.
    It is the SR1.
How soon will MAC offer software (e.g. final cut or imovie)
that will allow me to edit the high definition video?
I have heard that Blackmagic offers a card that allows you to run the video into the computer - will I need this card to run the video into imovie or final cut express?
    Thanks,
    Martin
PS Are there other HDMI cards for mac that are cheaper than $300 and is there any MAC editing software for HIGH DEF already out there?

    Welcome to the forums.
FCP doesn't support the format now, and there is no word when support will occur.
If the camera has an HDMI interface, then the Black-Magic Intensity card is the one for you. And $300 is as cheap as it gets. Unfortunately I think it only works with FCP, and not iMovie. iMovie HD can only capture via firewire, and it doesn't support that format. FCP and that card (need a MacPro or Quad to use that card) are the only options at this time, and it captures footage as a workable format.

  • High def videos vs. Low def videos on iPad

Hi, everybody.  I bought a video, and accidentally bought it in high def, when I meant to get low def.  It downloaded and played just fine, so apparently my iPad does support high def, but I'm wondering whether it was worth the extra money.
I've heard that when you buy a high def video from the app store, you get both it and the low def version.  So my question is, how do I find the low def version to get a look at it before I buy another video?

Please see: iTunes Store: Viewing and downloading HD content on iPad which should clear this up for you.
    Regards,
    Steve

  • Computer specs required for high def video editing???

My current/new laptop won't edit high def video.  It's an Acer Aspire S732Z, pentium processor, 2.2 GHz, 3GB Ram, up to 1759 MB of Intel® Dynamic Video Memory Technology 5.0 (64 MB of dedicated video memory
What specs to I need to edit high def video???  Any specific computer recommendations?  Price is a factor.

  • Apple tv video quality vs hd tv and high def dvd's

ok...i know it supports 1080i, but does the video quality of video in itunes really look good compared against say a blu-ray disc, or hdtv signals? i'm sure it will get better (with a hardware or software upgrade?) if its not close to high def quality but want to know what i'm in store for if i buy appletv now...thanks. PS: i currently have directv HD and a ps3 for blu-ray, and my tv's are all HD...

Based on my own testing, the distinctions between an HD-DVD movie (which are true 1080) and an Apple TV video converted as its own maximum settings (which is 720) is actually quite noticeable if you have a 1080 TV set, but at the same I don't consider it a show-stopper. I watch a lot of HD broadcast content that's only 720p, and it's still very good.
An HD-DVD or Blu-Ray DVD will normally be in 1920 x 1080 resolution (1080p or 1080i, generally depending on your equipment). The Apple TV's maximum resolution is 1280 x 720 (basically 720p). Therefore, even an original HD-DVD or Blu-Ray DVD converted to Apple TV will need to be scaled down to 720p for display on the Apple TV.
Further, Elgato EyeTV actually scales these down somewhat lower, so HDTV recorded content could be even worse-off, depending on the original source. The standard Apple TV export settings use a 960 x 540 frame in order to keep the bit-rate and frame rate within tolerances (since a 720p signal is approximately 60fps, and the bitrates will generally exceed 5-6 mbps, which pushes the limits of the Apple TV).
Even more interestingly, Elgato's new turbo.264 dongle will only encode in "Apple TV" format at a maximum resolution of 800 x 600 (and if you do the math you will realize that this will be considerably less for a 16:9 aspect ratio video).
The result is that videos converted from an EyeTV Hybrid are technically much worse off on the Apple TV than viewing the original source material. Whether this is significant enough to be noticeable will depend on your output medium, but on my 62" DLP, the difference is quite apparent (although still far superior to an SDTV signal).
You can get 1280 x 720 content to play back at 60fps at 5mbps bit-rates on the Apple TV by using ffmpeg-based encoders and manually selecting higher settings, although it's been hit-and-miss in my own testing, and of course it creates gargantuan files. Elgato and others have obviously tried to stay with the more conservative settings to ensure that they can guarantee the broadcast possible range of support.
In fact, although most of the standard encoder settings max out at 2.5-3.0 mbps, I've successfully pushed up to 6 mbps through the Apple TV, although such content has to be synced rather than streamed, since even an 802.11n network has a hard time keeping up (it worked, but there were some drop-outs and glitches in the process). Of course, 6mbps content is going to fill up the Apple TV hard drive pretty quickly as well (you'd only be able to fit around 11 hours on the internal 40GB hard drive).
The other thing to keep in mind with DVD movies is that they come from film, which is a 24fps source (based on the physical nature of film). As a result, the distinctions between a 720p and 1080i signal are less prevalant when dealing with film content, since you won't get the full 60fps HDTV capabilities anyway. Interlacing can still create some nasty side-effects, but it's far less of an issue when you're dealing with less than half of the normal frames.
In my own experiences, I have an Apple TV that is connected to a 1080p upscaling DLP TV (native 1080i input, internalized de-interlacing), and a second Apple TV that is connected to a 720p LCD TV. With the first Apple TV, I can notice the difference between 720p and 1080i output settings only when viewing photos, since the remainder of the standard content doesn't exceed 720p anyway. Further, because my TV de-interlaces a 1080i signal to 1080p, I don't get the flicker that is normally associated with a 1080i signal.
On the second Apple TV, I leave the setting to 720p, since that's the native resolution of the second TV, and I get noticeable interlacing-based flickering on the 1080i, particularly with photo slideshows (mostly in the transitions).

  • Can someone pls Recmnd a camera that is tape based and high Def  under $1k

Please give me your recommendations on a minDV camera that is High Def. for under $1,000.
I still am unclear: is there a difference between DV and mini DV ? what ? ss

I don't normally recommend camcorders to anyone, but this particular one was recommended to me by a friend who has one. It's High definition 1080i, uses mini DV tapes and can switch to standard definition and has a good color rendering.
Amazon has just reduced it to $1058, but google it and you will find it cheaper and under 1k.

  • Advice on buying camera for stills and high speed video

    Hello video pros,
I'm a music composer who occasionally dallies with some simple photographic and video work. I'm looking for some advice re picking up a camera to make some simple videos, but with the highest quality I can get with consumer grade gear.
I am pretty much ruling out consumer grade camcorders for two reasons:  One is that I want to be able to shoot high quality stills and make stop motion videos from very high res stills.  The other is that I don't need audio recording at all because the video will always be just to accompany music - simple music videos basically.  So I'm much more interested in the recent mid range point-and-shoot bridge cameras with full HD video modes rather than camcorders - they seem to cover more realistically the range of things I want to do.
My main question is regarding shooting at higher frame rates than 30 fps. I'd like to shoot video at a minimum of 60 fps (or higher) to then playback at 25 fps to get that smooth, slightly dreamy motion effect. There are a few cameras out there that offer high speed video modes, but most are nothing more than a gimmick because the res is so low that the resulting video is unusable.  However a few cameras now seem to hit a sweet spot, offering 60 fps recording at HD res, and also 120 fps at 640x480 which (at a pinch) is usable, at least for stuff destined for simple web use.
The cameras I've narrowed it down to so far seem to be the Nikon Coolpix P500, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ40 and possibly the Fujifilm HS20 EXR.  I also was vaguely interested in the Casio Exilim HS cameras, but they seem to only offer high speed video modes that are pointless - 1000 fps at a completely useless low res, and 120 fps only at 640x480.  The others I listed seem to offer at least 60 fps at some kind of HD res, so I'm assuming that with these cameras I could shoot decent looking video which would then play back with that slightly hyper real slow-mo effect when I import into FCP at 25 fps.  Is this correct?  Or is it the case that when they say HD video @ 60fps, it's some kind of interlaced mode which means you can't play back at a slower frame rate to get smooth slow motion?
The other thing I've noted is that all of these cameras do record HD video, but it's always compressed in H264 format.  I understand that this puts a serious limitation on how much post-processing you can do to the video afterwards.  Highly compressed video will begin to show image artefacts very quickly when you apply effects as opposed to higher quality (bigger file size) video compression.  But I think I can live with that given that for the stuff I want to make, it will just be simply edited and only lightly graded.  However, of the cameras I'm looking at, the Lumix also records in a format called AVCHD which (I think) does full HD at 17 Mbps.  Does this mean that it's basic video quality is significantly better than the other choices?  That said, from the specs it's unclear if it actually allows shooting at higher frame rates which you can slow down at playback.. the way it describes 60fps mode makes it sound like it's just interlacing so you don't actually get a higher number of images per second to then be able to play back at a lower frame rate.  This for me might rule it out because I really want the creative effect of high speed video, even if it's only the subtle effect of 60 fps slowed down to 25.
So in summary, I'm looking for a camera capable of creative shooting (high quality stills to make stop motion videos, usable-quality HD video along with at least some degree of high speed video at a resolution that is still usable) to make interesting and artistic footage to accompany music.  The destination medium is the web, so even though I'd like to get the best quality raw material to work with, the final destination is not exactly a cinema screen.  As a pro in a related industry, I'm all too aware of the pointlessness of buying outlandishly over-specced gear that is far beyond your level of expertise.  So I want to keep it simple and realistic, budget-wise, given the level I'm at.  Nothing more than say $800 US.  A seriously high end camera would be wasted on me, and I think it would be wiser to invest in useful accessories like a steadicam merlin and decent tripod rather than blow loads of cash on a camera far beyond my skill level.
Apologies for the long post, any and all advice would be very welcome and appreciated!  And feel free to correct me if my assumptions are wrong, and suggest any gear that I should consider looking at.

Hi, thanks for your input.  I'm aware of the fact that my question is a bit OT, but I'm just looking for input from people with more experience and broader information in this area than I have myself.. I know people are here to talk about FCP, but I'm betting many editors and film makers who work with FCP will have more insight in this area than I do.
I've been reading every review I can find at dpreview, and also am watching as many test video examples I can find on the internet, mostly on vimeo because the ones on youtube look pretty awful.  I just am reaching out to get some actual experience and advice from people who might give me pointers on what to look out for.
As for 60fps not being fast enough, I know what you're saying.  But for me, even 60 fps slowed down to 25 fps on playback is enough of an interesting effect, as long as the actual quality of the footage looks good to start off with.  I like the subtle effect of slightly slower than real motion when it's real, bona-fide high frame rate slowed down.  Artificially created slow-mo using plug ins looks cheesy to me, and the gimmicky super high frame rates of cameras like the casio exilim (where the resolution looks like a mobile phone video from ten years ago) are completely useless.
I've seen lots of examples on vimeo of stuff shot with DSLRs from Canon and Nikon at 60fps and then played back at 25 or 24, and it looks plenty nice enough for what I'm after.  But am I kidding myself that I'd get anything near as nice with the price range I'm looking at?

  • High def video

Can I import and edit high definition video on my macbook, even though it's not a high def screen?

You realize that actually your MacBook does support "Hi-Def?" It won't support 1080 but will support 768. Anything over that 768 is considered Hi-Def. Your MacBook's native resolution is 1280x800 which by definition is "Hi-Def" although not "full HD." But to answer your question (which was handily answered already by bdk and delta) you're good to go.

I just updated to Adobe Reader 11.0.07 on my Mac OS version 10.6.8 and now the video files don't work.  How do I uninstall the update and return to the previous version?

I received a notice from Chris Campbell at Adobe that stated : "....we are aware that Macs created between 2006 and 2008 are currently running into problems using the latest release of Flash Player (version 13)."  My question is will the update of Adobe Reader 11.0.07 cause this problem with Flash Player 13 on my Mac?  Sometimes when I try to view streaming video I get sound but no video.

  • Which Computer needed for High Def video

I purchased a Panasonic HDC-TM900 High def camcorder and don't have enough computer power to edit the video. Which computer or how much processor power do I need.
    thanks

    Hmm....
what software did the camera come with?
What does the manual/documentation say for computer requirements?
Yes, I do encourage i7 or quad-core for best performance
Budget a few hundred gigabytes of hard drive space for render space for hour long projects
    I like 7200rpm drives
If you are getting paid for your work, don't hesistate to double or triple your budget.
Have you considered a high-end gaming laptop to showcase your work or work right at your clients?  I do my work on a gaming laptop and it's much more rewarding to showcase my work and make edits on the spot with a client.
Again your camera is capable of 3D.  Don't limit your hardware to 2D.
    With regards to software
I like Pinnacle Studio for raw performance and excellent interface when I'm trimming clips.
I like Avid Studio for Picture and Picture.  Pinnacle is limited to 2 video streams.
I like Corel VideoStudio Ultimate (still learning it) for 3D support
Seriously research and look for a local demonstation of Matrox MXO2.  If you are making money on your projects, being able to render and post your videos with the shortest amount of time with make you more attractive to a client.  It also frees up your personal time.
Panasonic's camera is still kinda new, you are going to need to research if products identified supports your camera.

i tried to download a movie from itunes store just few minutes ago, it told me "This cannot be played in HD on this computer.
rather insane as I have recently purchased HD films with no issues or concerns at all.  I have also updated to the most recent itunes software, yet it still gives me this same error message.  and also all movies that i oiwn in HD do work without any problems. I read as much i could but its still giving me this message when i attempt to download.  it only gives me the option to get the standard definition version of the film. which is not what I want.  Any help on this please? thanks!.

After I reformatted my Window 7 machine I'm getting this error too. I deauthorized all my devices and started fresh with my newly reformatted PC thinking that would solve the issue but no go...
    Any insight?

  • Basic Mac / DOS format question

I need to transfer some large video files from a friend's MAC system to another friends Windows system.  They're 4.2 GB each.
I do have a NTFS driver on my own MAC system, so I can bring the files home and copy them from the MAC drive to an NTFS drive.
However, I would just as soon eliminate that extra step.  (I'd have to bring it back here, and it would add an extra day to the process.)
My question: if I were to bring a standard DOS (not NTFS) portable drive, would it be able to accommodate files of that size (4.2 GB).  Is that the limit?
Thanks!  I appreciate it. I know this question is a comparatively easy one for most of the members of this focum!

    WillFriedwald2 wrote:
thanks!  that was very quick.  3.9999 is the limit - the "old" DOS system is technically called "ex-FAT" or something like that, as I recall.
Anyhow. most importantly, MAC can read an ex-FAT drive without an additional drivers or modifications, so I have to get the guy to generate slightly smaller files.
    thanks again,
    w
No, the 'old' Dos format is called FAT32 and is the one with the sub 4GB limit. eXFat can accommodate files larger than 4GB and should work for your purpose but is a less reliable system, use it for transfer, not for long term storage.
Here's a link to the Wiki page for eXFat

I have been using premeire elements 10 since it came out and have been happy until this week.  I use elements to put together my daughters school performance for archival reasons.  I am working on her latest play and act one was fine and clear when completed earlier this week.  However, act two is coming out blurry, including the title menu and other texts and the burned dvd came out very blurry.  I tried to compare act one and now the title menu preview is also showing a blurry video so I know the burning will be blurry as well.  please help as I'm tired of always redoing the edits.  thank you

  • IMac 20" and High Definition Video

    Hey,
I live in the UK and often visit the Apple store where i try out the different displays and computers on offer. I have a 12" G4 iBook which i bought in October last year as my first Mac.
I have been converted from PC's by this and i am now looking into purchasing a desktop Mac such as an iMac.
I quite fancy an Intel iMac 20" as i would be able to do everything i would want to on it. One of the main attractions for me is the HD capabilities.....if they are what i expect.
When i try and attempt to watch HD movie trailers from the Quicktime site on my iBook, the only resolution that will work is 480p. This is the lowest resolution available as HD content and even at this low resolution the performance can be insufficient.
I would be purchasing the Intel iMac 20" with 250GB hard drive and probably 1GB of RAM (looking to upgrade to 2GB after purchase) and most likely the 256MB graphics card.
Some questions i hope that could be answered:
    a) Would the spec mentioned above cope with HD content and if so, would it even cope with 1080? I know the resolution will only show 1050 but the picture would still be better than 720 right? Is there much point in upgrading the graphics card to the 256MB option?
    b) As HD hasnt really been released in the UK as of yet, will i be able to import DVD's from America to watch them on my iMac, also, will these DVD's mean that i will have to set the region on the DVD drive to American, so therefore i would be unable to watch UK DVD's
    c) I have a Windows desktop that struggles to record live TV from the internal PCI card. I find that it records the programs and contains a jerky picture, with an Intel Mac would the recordings be smooth, I.E would the hardware be powerful enough to be able to record video smoothly.
    d) If i was to upgrade the RAM in the iMac myself, would this void the Apple warranty? Is it an easy installation process? I have created a whole Windows desktop from scratch but have never looked inside a Mac (presume they are similar)
    e) I will be going to University to do a Degree in Software Engineering which will mainly use Windows applications. How does Windows run under Boot Camp and is it stable enough to use as a frequent operating system bearing in mind it will be important for me as i will use it often for prolonged periods of time.
Many Thanks to whoever could answer any of these questions.
    Chris Howard
    iBook G4 12   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

HD-DVD is coming soon to the Mac as an external drive (probably usb2.0). It will be expensive though.
    A. The iMac has more than enough horse power to display 1080i movies. The mac will have to downres it because the display is 1680x1050.
    B. Can't tell until the HD-DVD players are released.
C.It would be but you would need to buy a device like eyetv to do so since the mac doesn't have a tuner.
    D. The ram is user upgradable and very easy to install. The user's manual shows how to upgrade.
    E. Windows XP runs under bootcamp as well as under a normal pc. There are some driver issues as far as supporting some of apples built in hardware, like the iSight cam, but other than that it is bulletproof. I sold my intel pc recently after upgrading to bootcamp. Don't need it anymore.
