Need to understand basics of Oracle RAC and Grid technology, for training

I need to understand Oracle RAC and Grid infrastructure, from a manager's / training perspective.
I see links here and here, so a couple questions:
- what's the basic difference from a layman's (e.g., a manager's) perspective ?
- What training options are available for a generic 11g DBA to learn this new technology ? I've seen this course from an Oracle partner ("Course:Oracle 11g: RAC and Grid Infrastructure Administration Accelerated Release 2"), for a boat load of money, for 5 days I think. So we're looking for something a little more reasonable (and accessible), e.g., books, online, etc.

For a very basic definition, RAC is technology that is used by the database and GI is the infrastructure that makes RAC work. In a forum reply, that's probably all what can be said about both. For a very lengthy answer, you should read the links that you have quoted.
For #2, the course that you are looking at is called Accelerated as it combines two courses in a single week training-RAC(4) and GI(3). So it's a 7 day curriculum that one would be doing in a 5 day course and that should justify its cost. But let me say, it's a really really good course. But on the other side, it can be quite overwhelming for someone who doesn't know about these technologies already. So I shall suggest that you send your team to each course individually and probably after doing some homework . They can start reading the following books,

Clarity on basics of oracle Install Base

I am not getting clarity over the below mentioned items even after going thru documents. Can anybody please highlight on these...
--> what exactly is an instance in install base and how is it associated to a serial number of an item or product?
--> what is meant by maintaining relationship between instances?
--> At what position specific to Service Contracts / Order Management / Shipping applications, an instance gets created or updated in install base?
--> what is meant by serial control over an item from an shipping organization perspective?
--> what are the other applications that can be a source for an Install Base transaction?

One oracle block (say a 8k or a 16k block) can contain several rows. Right?
Ans:Yes, In One oracle block there can be more than one row whether it is oracle 10g or 11g doesn't matter.
Question2.
Every row stored in an oracle block is referred to as a Row piece in Oracle terminology. Right?

Very basic question Oracle spatial query

Hi All,
Iam a newbie to oracle spatial.
How can i verify that oracle spatial is installed in my database.
My database is version is 10.2.0.2.0
Is there any special query i can execute to test oracle spatial is working properly / installed properly.
All the finctionality oracle spatial is working properly

Visual Basic 5/Oracle DB

I need help to insert a date in a oracle table through VB 5. I am using ODBCDirect, but always I have run time error '3146: ODBC -- Call faild; ORA-00932:inconsistent datatypes. I can do this with text and numeric fields but I can't with date field.

Upgrading Oracle soa suite 10.1.3.1 to 10.1.3.4 by Basic and Advance instal

i have installed oracle soa suite 10.1.3.1 basic installation and needs to upgrade to 10.1.3.4 . I searched in google some suggested
1) install database 10g xe or some version 10.2+
2) to run irca.cmd script for creating dehydration store
3) Install oracle soa suite basic installation 10.1.3.1
4) Before applying patch run sql scripts
5) apply patch to upgrade to 10.1.3.4
Here i have one doubt in basic installation oracle lite database will be installed by default then how do i relate external database to soa suite in basic installation . Is it possible ?
If we use default database oracle lite for upgrade to 10.1.3.4 and i think it will ask for orabpel and oraesb used id and pwd when we are running the sql scripts which i am not aware of?
and do i still need to run irca.cmd script for creatinv schemas.
I am so confused here i just want to know the steps of upgrade in basic and advance soa installation.

Basic Report Run from a PL/SQL Procedure

I am hosed trying to start a BI Publisher report from a PL/SQL procedure. Basically, I have a procedure with a local variable defined as an XMLType. I need to call an RTF source, pass the xmlfile in and tell the RTF Engine where to send the output.
The users guide implies that it involves calls to a Java program and I am totally ignorant of Java.
I have successfully linked the RTF source into the XML_Publisher application and previewed it against a known data set. hat works.
So, if I have a PL/SQL package with the local variable L_XML defined as XMLTYPE
and an output file L_OUTBUT defined as VARCHAR2(100), what do I use to call the RTF Processor and generate the report to the output file?

I don't think you can. The parameters passed to a VB dll are formatted differently than a C dll, especially strings. I know a C program has to use special data structures when working with a VB dll, and this is basically what Oracle is doing.
It should be possible, however, to create a C dll that acts as a wrapper for the VB dll. I'm not sure this would save you anything, though. If you have to do that you may as well write the function in C.

What is the relationship between Process and Session parameter in Oracle

Hi All
I ran into a problem
"ORA-00020: maximum number of processes (150) exceeded " on the other day and I want to fix this temporary by increase the process by some number like 200.
Someone suggesting the syntax to fix my problem then the database must restart after running this command.
alter system set processes=200 scope=spfile;
However, I check the v$Paramenter view I see 2 values I believe they go together are
Processes: 150
Sessions:170.
Here are my questions:
1. "alter system set processes=200 scope=spfile;" is the correct way to increase the max Processes?
2. Do I have change the number of Sessions after changing the number of Processes?
3. Is there other way to increase the processes number without reboot the Oracle database?

According to the Oracle version# Reference manual which documents the database parameters sessions is set to 1.1 * process + 5 using the 10gR2 version.
Basically an Oracle process cooresponds to an OS process that performs the actual work for the session.
An Oracle session is a collection of memory structure entries that identifies and keeps track of what is being done for a client of the Oracle database.
Sometimes a single background process will support multiple sessions even in dedicated server mode such as when recursive SQL is performed to support the DML statement being done in the session.
PS - you should consider increasing processes first and only increase sessions if you still have an issue.

Mod_osso behavior differences with 10gR3 Oracle HTTP Server 2

We have an install of standalone 10gR3 Oracle HTTP Server 2 (i.e. the Apache 2 version), and have noticed that the behavior of mod_osso is different than the regular 10gR3 Oracle HTTP Server (i.e. the Apache 1 version).
We use the following in our mod_osso.conf:

First Difference: With OHS 2, when we go to /somepath, we get the error "missing AuthName" in the Apache logs.
So, we set an AuthName. Now, our mod_osso.conf looks like this:
<Location /OnDemand>
AuthType Basic
AuthName "Oracle Single Sign On"
require valid-user
</Location>
Second Difference: Now, we we go to /somepath, Apache returns a 401, which causes the browser to prompt for credentials! We can enter anything we want in the dialog, and everything will continue as normal (i.e. redirects to the Oracle SSO Server to prompt for credentials, etc).
So, our question is: Why these behavior differences in 10gR3 OHS 2? It almost seems as if it's using an old 9i mod_osso!

Okay, we figured it out.
Apparently, the three "LoadModule mod_auth*" lines in OHS 2 httpd.conf need to be commented out.
Now mod_osso is working exactly as with OHS 1.

ORA-00601 Error using JDBC, Oracle 8i on Linux

Hello,
Spatial is considering using Oracle as its database platform. I was assigned
the task of benchmarking the two platforms. So, I downloaded the latest copy
of Oracle for Linux, version 8.1.6.1.0 ( 8i Enterprise Edition Release 2 ).
I'm using RedHat 6.2, with a 2.2.14-5.0smp kernel. I ran the installer, set
up the databases, and everything seemed to be running quite nicely. I copied
a table and its data from mysql to Oracle, and wrote a java program to
benchmark the two. This java program takes command line arguments, the first
one being the connection URL, the second being the number of threads to
start, the third being the number of operations to complete for each thread.
So, if you pass it connection 35 35, it will open 35 threads, and each
thread will then execute 35 selects, inserts, and updates. These are
hard-coded queries, but they mimic the functionality currently in
production.
Oracle bombs on the update. I turned tracing on, and tried it again, with
the same result. Here's an excerpt from one of the trace files:

I was not able to find any information regarding this error. However, this
message ( or one very similar ) appeared in every trace file. I get the
following at the end of the pmon_xxxx.trc file:

And, the following in the alert_sid.log file:
Wed Jun 21 17:42:19 2000
PMON: terminating instance due to error 601

I made the assumption that this error was actually ORA-00601, and took a
peek on the internet for relavent information. The canned error message is
"PMON process runs into lock conflict trying to recovery processes". I found
someone who had a similar problem, who suggested setting mts_max_dispatchers
in the initsid.ora file to 1. However, this did not work.
Basically, when Oracle crashes, the java program is trying to update one
column in 1225 rows, 35 times, for 35 threads. The java exception is below.

Sorry for the long delay in reply. I was using the thin client driver. However, when I switched to the oci8 driver, not only did I observe a 300% increase in speed, but this bizarre occurrence disappeared. I did find one issue with the oci8 driver, as follows.
In this thread program, if I created a connection in the main program before any of the threads were instantiated, and when the first thread attempted to create a connection, it would produce a segmentation fault. This behavior was very easy to replicate, and it did not matter whether or not I close the original connection. This problem was circumvented by moving the code in the "main" program to create its connection after the child threads had created theirs.

I used Sql Server and .Net for developing application to now. I switch to Oracle and Java recently. I have installed Oracle 11g. What I need to start developing aoolication with Java and Oracle?
Has Oracle a graphical interface like MS Sql Server? how can I install them? What Developing Environment You suggest for Java? I am familiar with eclipse.

Do not attempt step 3 until you have complete 1 and 2.

Since you are probably used to using Visual Studio, then you probably want an IDE. Eclipse will suffice for that.
