Battery drain after downloading free apps BUT never launched them

I have searched all 7 pages of iPhone 3G section, any topic with "battery" in subject line, did not find a match, so posting new question.
I'm a new 3G owner; use wifi and bluetooth, fetch mail manually (no push); battery life easily holds 2-3 days with my typical usage; had never downloaded an app; last night decided to browse the free app store; download several stupid games and a few apps (google earth, urban spoon, shazaam, weather channel). BUT have not launched ANY of them...just the new icons sitting on my phone. However, today, after fully charging last night, battery dropeed to 20% by about noon. ???
Again, haven't changed a setting nor have I launched any of the apps I downloaded (was planning to play this weekend). Any ideas? Or should I just unistall all of them and download one at a time and watch it going forward?
Thanks for any advice.

I performed a reset (press and hold sleep/wake and home buttons together); I also noted that location services had turned on, so I turned that off (but left wifi and bluetooth ON as I normally do). Seems to have helped battery life dramatically.
It seems obvioius that certain apps I downloaded (google earth, the weather channel, etc.) all use location settings. Therefore the only thing I can reason through is that upon downloading, when the apps were being installed, one or more of them began to access location services or the internet, even though I did not open the app(s) specifically.
So, from my experience, beware that apps may very well install in a state that best suits their purpose and design; that while you may not open them directly, they may automatically be accessing the internet or location services.
Another suggestion would be to only load one new app at a time. That way, you can observe and isolate any change or impact on your phone, battery, performace, etc.; then easily uninstall if needed.
