Battery time remaining (how to properly charge macbook pro retina)

I'm a new macbook user, using a macbook pro 15 inch. I've been plugging in my charger when the battery gets down to around 20% and unplugging it when the light turns green (at 100%). I thought macbooks had a battery life of around 7-8 hours, but at fully charged, my time remaining (when I click on the battery icon the top right) says 5 hours. Can a  more experienced user correct me on as to what I am doing wrong in charging my macbook?

Two points:  The 'Time' setting is one of the most unreliable pieces of information on your MBP.  I set mine to '%'.  What it tries to show is based on what the MBP is doing at that very instant.  If you open Activity Monitor, you will see that the internal processing is very volatile.
What Apple advertises as time on a full charge is based on ultra conservative settings and use.  It doe not reflect the 'real' world.  Read the fine print and note the words 'up to', nor will, guaranty or promise.
Your battery run time will be a reflection of what applications you have open and the respective resources these applications require.
Here is a link to some good information regarding your MBP battery and its usage.  This will give you something to do for the rest of the afternoon.

It looks like that  the battery cells are in one region defekt.
Once i cross about 30% last charge it starts draining very fast within 10-15 Minutes the MacBook switches off.

The Load Cycle Count can increase even if you dont charge !!
Below you see that the LoadCycle Count increased from 373 to 374 even if i didnt charge.

    tesme33,
have you tried resetting your MacBook Pro’s System Management Controller, to see if that affects its energy consumption?
    When I run
    ioreg -n AppleSmartBattery -r | grep -i CycleCount
on my MacBook Pro, I get two different output lines. You might want to adjust that part of the CYCLECOUNT assignment to have
    ioreg -n AppleSmartBattery -r | grep '"CycleCount"'
instead, to ensure that that returns only the intended single line.

It's not a good idea to use a lower wattage power supply than what the machine shipped with. The 15" comes with an 85 watt adapter and that's what you should be using. You can go in the other direction with no problem, like using an 85 watt on a machine that came with a 60. If I were you, I go get the correct charger.

  • How to get new Macbook Pro Retina (late 2013) to detect external monitor via HDMI?

Hi everyone, this is my first Mac and for the most part it's been really, really wonderful.
This is my first major glitch:  I cannot get it to detect my external display:  It is an ASUS PA248Q, manufactured Aug 2012.
The HDMI cable according to my Amazon history is at least 1.3c from 2010,  "Fanatic Digital Imperial Series Gold-Plated HDMI Cable (6 feet)".
It works with perfectly connecting an AmazonTV box to an old Samsung TV, with vivid clarity, unlike our cableTV signal.
Just in case, I have a new HDMI cable on order, which claims to be of newest standards.
The Macbook Pro Retina (late 2013) has the standard Intel Iris from the Haswell chips, as well as Nvidia GT 750M, the latter which I don't think has been used yet.
The ASUS display says:  HDMI NO SIGNAL.
I have tried shutting them down and replugging the cable.  I don't know what the ideal order is.  The Macbook Pro is plugged into AC power, as suggested.
In System Preferences>Display, I press the Option key to select "Detect Displays" option (seriously unintuitive).
I have also tried resetting the NVRAM:
I shut the machine down.  Pressed the power button, then quickly held the quadruplet:  Option-Command-P-R  (a double handful) and waited for the machine to chime a 2nd time.  Tried to detect external display no luck.
    Next, I reset the SMC:
I shut the machine down.  Then I pressed Shift-Control-Option-Power   for about 5 to 10s.  Then I turned on the machine normally.
NVRAM & SMC steps were from an old youtube video, as the instructions I had did not explain how to do so clearly.
Please let me know if I"m doing something wrong.
Seems so exorbitant to pay $350 for Apple Care;  that's a the cost for a whole new cheap laptop.
I will search the forums again.  If anyone answers this,  thank so much!

    Hello there, willr314.
It sounds like you've covered most of the practical steps found in this Knowledge Base article:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1573#1
No video or no signal, image distortion, "snow," or flickering
    Check connections
When using an external display be sure to check the following:
If you're using an Apple notebook, confirm the AC power cable or adapter is securely connected to the computer and the cable providing power to the display is also secure. It is always good to have your notebook connected to AC power when an external display is in use.
Confirm display adapters are fully seated in their respective connections and that they are supported models and for the computer and display. Refer to these articles to assist you with adapter compatibility and further configuration information:
    Monitor and Display Adapter Table
About Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapters
Apple Mini DisplayPort adapters: Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Thunderbolt ports and displays: Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Remove all display cable extenders, KVM switches, or other like devices and retest to determine if the issue is resolved.
Try unplugging the video adapter or cable and then plug it back in.
If more than one video adapter is in use (or "daisy-chained"), troubleshoot by using only one adapter.
Example: A mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter connected to a DVI to HDMI adapter is an unsupported configuration because there is a series of adapters in use.
If available, try using a different display and or adapter (or use a different connector by using DVI instead of VGA, for instance).
    Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.Reset the resolutionStart by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
    Restart your computer.

If you tried all of these steps for your display and the video issues persist, contact Apple technical support or take your Apple computer to the nearest Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) for diagnosis. If you plan to visit an Apple Retail Store, make a reservation at the Genius Bar using http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ (available in some countries only).

  • How to properly eject macbook pro

I have a new 27" and a new macbook pro. I come to the office, plug in the MBP and it's wonderful. When I leave, i'm not going to shut it down every time, there's just no way (I have programs open that I need open and am not ready to shut down). What's the proper way to remove the MCP when I leave, rather than just reaching over and yanking the cords out? I think someone once told me control+alt+eject to put it to sleep. Is this still true?
    Thanks.

Put it to sleep.  If its hooked up to an external display you'll have to use either the apple menu then pick sleep or the shortcut which is option + cmd + eject.
Then unplug the power cord first.  If you do that, when you unplug everything else it won't wake from sleep.
When you get home and open it, the display will be blue for a second while it rearranges everything to one display then it will be good to go.

  • Flex not scaling properly on Macbook Pro Retina Display

    Hello all!
I'm currently writing an app in Flex on Flash Builder on a late Macbook Pro 15 Retina display. In my WindowedApplication, I've set the tags width and height to be 1920 and 1080 respectively. For some reason, when running debug, the application window opens up bigger than my screen. This doesn't make sense to me because my screen resolution is 2880 x 1800. Some further tests showed that what's appearing on screen is actually twice the resolution of what it should be. Can someone please help me with this scaling issue?  I'm assuming everything will look right when I run the app on a normal screen however debug is now a pain in the butt due to the scaling. Below is my main WindowedApplication and its tags:

  • Time machine problems transferring to new macbook pro retina

    Hi There
I just got my new shiny mac book pro retina and tried to use migration assistant to migrate my files over from an external drive which had my last macbook prod backup on it .  The migration assistant did not work it just kept on searching for backup.
After searching the forums I found a way to retrieve my files by entering disk recovery mode and then it worked. an hour later everything is back in place
However now i'm getting lots of beachball hanging behavior, could the recovery have brought over incompatible files that are causing me problems?
Is there a solution or should I start over with a clean install and manually bring things over.
    thanks
    David

  • HT1446 How do we charge MacBook Pro 13 inch?

I don't know how to charge it. Can anyone help me?

Plug in your charger block into a wall or power socket,... plug the magsafe end of the cable to the magnetic female connector on your macbook on the back left to start charging.
Keep it plugged in when near a socket so you keep the charging cycles DOWN on your LiPo (lithium polymer) cells / battery.
Just unplug it every month at LEAST and drain down to 30% or so.
*Contrary to some myths out there, there is protection circuitry in your macbook and therefore you cannot 'overcharge' it when plugged in and already fully charged
LiPo (lithium polymer, same as in your macbook) batteries do not need conditioning. However...
LiPo batteries do NOT like to be dropped down to 15% or so often,....key word being "often"
Never let your Macbook die from power, you can corrupt files that way, and the batteries do not like it.
The only quantified abuse seen to LiPo cells is instances when  often the cells are repeatedly drained very low.
Contrary to what some might say, LIPo batteries have an "ideal" break in period. First ten cycles or so, don't discharge down past 40% of the battery's capacity.
Same way you dont take a new car out and speed and rev the engine hard first 100 or so miles.
*Also, if youre going to store your macbook away for a few weeks or more,... make sure it has at least a 50% or so charge.
*Cycle count / use/ lifespan is one thing that cant be countered.
Proper treatment is another thing. Just because LiPo batteries dont need conditioning in general,.. does NOT mean they dont have an ideal use / recharge environment. Anything can be abused even if it doesnt need conditioning.
Just use and enjoy your new macbook,

    Understood.
I don't understand why Apple did not add a kensington lock. Not need much space...
They have taken what was already an almost impossibly thin engineering marvel and made it significantly thinner. I wonder if, because of this, some compromises to the internal frame had to be made therebye not allowing a locking point to attach to anything "significant" inside the MBP, and, if it was simply tethered to the outer casing, it was be all too easy to snip/break away, making it almost useless.

  • How to connect my macbook pro retina and PC to the same monitor(s)?

What's up all - any recommendations here are highly appreciated.  I have a gaming PC setup with two (2) DVI out's going to two 24" monitors.  One monitor has DVI, HDMI, the other just has DVI.  No use in talking VGA here.
    I also have a 15" MBP Retina.
Question:  What equipment (KVM switch) and setup would allow me to just have my monitors, mouse, keyboard in place and easily switch between my PC and MBP?

a other way is use the T model. connect the two mac with the  Thunderbolt cable or FireWire cable
