Bcache setup advice wanted

Hello World
I have been tinkering with mine SDD-HDD setup with Bcache.
And i was wondering if i did it right ???
Mine Idea was to have a 90GB SDD for quick root access.
And use the rest of the SSD with Bcache to speedup files from the HDD.
Any advice or tweaks are welcome.. and if needed i can put mine whole install wikipage here. (VERY LARGE)
But its 100% SSH install friendly with copy and past commands
Here is a Bcache mounting part of mine private wikipage.
==== Mount the partitions ====
cd ~/
mkdir -p /mnt/install
mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/install
mkdir -p /mnt/install/{boot,home,srv,data,var,mnt/.hdd}
mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/install/boot
mount /dev/bcache0 /mnt/install/mnt/.hdd
mkdir -p /mnt/install/mnt/.hdd/{home,srv,data,var}
mount -o bind /mnt/install/mnt/.hdd/home /mnt/install/home
mount -o bind /mnt/install/mnt/.hdd/srv /mnt/install/srv
mount -o bind /mnt/install/mnt/.hdd/data /mnt/install/data
mount -o bind /mnt/install/mnt/.hdd/var /mnt/install/var
==== Bcache Check After mounting ====
Reason for /boot on the HDD is because of boot up failure because of HDD spin-up.
lsblk
NAME              MAJ:MIN RM   SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINT
sda                 8:0    0 167.7G  0 disk
|-sda1              8:1    0    90G  0 part /mnt/install

   `-bcache0       253:0    0   1.8T  0 disk /mnt/install/mnt/.hdd
Here is mine Genfstab Part.
==== Generate an fstab ====
Generate an fstab file with the following command. UUIDs will be used because they have certain advantages.
genfstab -U -p /mnt/install >> /mnt/install/etc/fstab
sed -i '/dev\/sda/ s/rw,relatime,data=ordered/defaults,noatime,discard/g' /mnt/install/etc/fstab
sed -i '/mnt\/install/ {s/\/mnt\/install//g; s/rw,relatime,data=ordered/defaults/g; s/none/bind/g}' /mnt/install/etc/fstab
more /mnt/install/etc/fstab
Example:
# /etc/fstab: static file system information
# <file system>    <dir>    <type>    <options>    <dump>    <pass>
# /dev/sda1
UUID=48b61847-ef90-4ac0-a9c7-ba8f64b575cb    /             ext4          defaults,noatime,discard    0 1
# /dev/sdb1
UUID=9ebda53c-ae98-422b-83bb-b1af767a121e    /boot         ext4          rw,relatime,data=ordered    0 2

For one, forget the SoundBlaster Audigy.  You're more likely to have more pain and heartache with it...
Most likely you are going to want to try the Ultragain on one of your optical interfaces.  The Emu card says it supports optical ADAT and I believe your Event Ez8 does as well, but I'm not 100% sure on that.  If you're multitracking you would only get up to 10 tracks (or 12 if the spdif counts too) per record session (@44.1kHz or 48kHz) from the Emu+Ultragain, but that should be enough in most cases.  With the Ez8 I think you only get 8 tracks.  Since you can only use one ASIO driver at a time and there is probably no way to sync them, your best bet would be to use one PCI card (Emu) and leave the rest out of the system...
You may be able to use the EzBus as a MIDI controller, but you'd have to get advice from others on that one.  I just never really use MIDI controllers in my setups. It would make a really nice 2 track interface for a laptop though...

  • Server Setup advice for a video production house

    Hello Forum,
I recently started working for a small video production company, I need advice on the type of server and other hardware and services that will allow my co-workers to work efficiently. Here are some details:
Currently we are going to buy a new server, I am not sure what we should look at getting,
currently we use a mini mac running OSX server and have 6 iMacs that the editors and other staff use.
We also have a 15 TB Drobo network storage device which is attached to the mini-mac server we are going to replace.
The production team uses Final Cut and Motion to build documentaries.
The other issue is that need a way to connect the office in Baltimore to the office in Washington DC and ideally share files between each location, currently they cannot access the network from Baltimore and have to have a copy of the unedited footage on their own Drobo.
What type of server setup do you recommend? Quad core? speed?
Should we set up a VPN to connect offices or does someone have a better idea, if so what applications do we need?
I know windows networking pretty well, but Mac is totally new to me.Currently editing files from the server is really slow and files are usually pulled to the iMacs to do editing, burning DVDs from files on the server hardly ever works- they pull them local then burn the DVD and it works.
I would love to hear suggestions to help us get up and running.
Anyone know of a good website for server setup- Since there is no Domains in OSX that i know of, how can we secure the network? Links would be great.
Thanks in advance for any help and suggestions.

Well if your looking for performance. You could get a Promise VTrak E-Class RAID with 32TB of storage, later on you can add more chassis to the raid for more storage space. The raid can be expanded up to 160TB. (80 drive bays, each drive 2 TB)
Using fiber you could attach the raid to an xServer or Mac Pro (running mac os x server). You'll probable want at least 8 or 16 GB of ram on the server.
The server can run a copy of final cut server. Witch makes it easer to work as a group. Mac OS X server, when properly configured, can also be used to create a VPN between both locations.
Final Cut Server will let editors check in/out specific parts of the documentaries. So the project lives on the server; instead of scattered over every ones computers. Part of this is you can pull down thumb nails versions of the video to work off of. Only when you do the final render do you download the HD version of the video.
If you want even better performance on the editing stations. you could also upgrade to Mac Pros. Mac Pros have upgrade slots witch you can use to add fiber networking. You could also use the upgrade slots to add a black magic real time HD capture card.
Or if you want to keep the imacs. you might want to hook the server to a switch by fiber, and have the imacs connected to the same switch by 1000-T
If you call apple i'm sure they'd be happy to help you figure this all out.

  • Arch Linux Gaming Setup - Advice?

Okay so with the arrival of BL2 on Linux I want to setup Arch for gaming, but I need some advice towards this.
How would you personally set it up? UEFI or BIOS, EXT4 or BTRFS. FOSS or Catalyst?
What desktops would you also have? I am tempted via KDE5, I think it looks rather sweet, or maybe budgie.
    also should I use 3.17 or 3.16?
Any other suggestions for this, I am not very good at setting up arch for gaming..
    Many thanks!

Any of those options are fine and won't make a noticeable difference.
The biggest choice is whether to use the open source "radeon" driver or Catalyst, but that's simple to decide: Start with the open source "radeon" driver (it's dead simple to setup). If it doesn't meet the needs of the video games you want to play, then try Catalyst.

  • WebCam Pro setup advice

I am trying to find the optimum settings for the WebCam Pro for video recording. I am not sure how to set it so that the playback appears with the audio and video in sync. As I have it now, the audio does not play at the same rate as the video plays. I am using WinXP. I have the video output size at 60x20 with the color set to default. The picture is very small but then it is less grainy. I'd put it larger if I could figure out how to clean up the noise. I'm using the recommended Integer Compression for the Image Capture and have the Video Capture set at no video compressor, audio PCM and audio format at 44,100 Hz.
    Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

  • Condenser mic for voice recording - setup advice ??

    Hi All,
Newbie to GB. Want to setup my condenser mic (3.5mm) to record voice tracks. The condenser mic was purchased with a HD Camcorder and works great for video. Currently the mic works through the "line-in" but at very low level. Done a little research and Hangtime recommends the use of a USB interface.
    http://www.thehangtime.com/gb/gbfaq2.html#recordlinein
    (thanks hangtime).
I'm now looking at the griffin imic as an inexpensive solution. Before I drop my $$ on this guy, is this the best solution. (or will it do the job right??)
    Feedback appreciated.
    Matt.
    G5 D1.8 1GB/160/SD   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   Garageband 1.1.0

My advice would be the same as CD's. If you have a Line-In, for the same price as an iMic you could get a small mixer like the Behringer UB502 Eurorack Mixer for about $38, add a 1/8" to 1/4" adaptor, and you'll have much better control than with the iMic alone.

  • Network setup advice

    Hi there,
My home network will consist of a Belkin wireless router, an Athlon XP Desktop, and two Laptops (Wireless Access).
My Athlon XP is going to be an always on machine, that i wanted to setup with arch as an firewall/gateway, i may consider setup an openvpn to secure my wireless network and i also need this machine as a "support" workstation (this means i'll have to install X, i use it mainly for some quick browsing or office task whenever i don't want to turn on the laptop... yeah call me lazy!!), my printer will also be atached to this computer so i can say it will also be a print server .
I have a cable modem connection, so i was thinking of the following setup: The Cable modem connects to the Athlon XP trough eth0, providing internet connection (gateway) trough eth1. The Belkin router will connect to the eth1 adapter. (i consider disabling the built in router function in it using it as an access point only.
At this point you might be asking why i could ever wanted to connect things this way... why not connecting the Cable modem to the Belkin router and then to the desktop... , well the reason is simple, i use torrents a lot and my router seems to crash quite too often when handling torrents (maybe under excessive traffic or too many connections).
After this long and boring text , i would like to hear from you about possible security issues, advices, and other setup alternatives.
Final Note: I'm new to Arch, used to be a gentoo user and i'm quite happy for how things are handled here, although i think some improvements must be done in the wiki and documentation, i'll look forward to help contribute in some way. Keep up the good work and many thanks in advance.

    Hi mate,
my network is similar to what you want to build. My Arch server/firewall is facing the internet with one ADSL connection, behind it is a Switch, not Wireless:D:D:D, cause i don't like wireless network. I also have an OpenVPN server i can connect my laptop when i am away. I also have sshd as a backdoor. You can setup OpenVPN by follow my post here:
    http://bbs.unin83.com/viewtopic.php?t=157
My advise for you is make your Arch up and running, and then setup iptables to do NAT, and open some ports for OpenVPN and others. You can write your own iptables script and can find it with google. I believe that there are many scripts like this available.
Remember to enable ip forwarding at the Arch Linux.
If you setup SSH, the better idea is to open a different port rather than port 22 because when i use port 22, a lot of newbies and bots try to brute force the password-->big log files.
    :D:D
You can also disable your Root account and use sudo instead for security.
After you have your server up and running, using nmap, hping, nessus, and other tools to check your server.
    Hope this can help you.
    Cheers.

  • 10.5 Server setup advice

    Hi everybody,
I need some advice to help me setup a 10.5 server.
I am running a linux box for mail, web, dns.
I am also running a 10.5 client (which is going to be the server box) to share drives and runs Retrospect for backup. I also have about 20 macs running 10.5 client as workstations with multiple user accounts on each workstation.
I am now about to setup 10.5 server with network home folders so users can login on any mac and access their email and other documents.
What type of server configuration should I use: standard, workgroup, advanced.
There are some cool features of 10.5 server that I would also like to provide to users in the future such as wiki, ical, ichat, managed user computers.
In the meantime I just want to do file sharing and network home folders to keep the ball rolling.
Cheers and thanks in advance for your replies. I'm sure that I will be back with some more interesting problems!
    Anth

What you're looking to do would be best accomplished using your server as an Open Directory Master. You'll want to use the Advanced configuration to do that. Just a couple caveats before you start. Despite what Apple advertises, setting up an OS X Server isn't necessarily a couple clicks, and it does require some reading.
You'll be best off erasing the HD on the machine you intend to use as a Server. You can install OS X Server over an existing OS X installation, but I've never tried, so I won't say if it will work or not.
Apple recommends having a replica server if you are running OD. You don't have to, but it is recommended. It's also a good idea to have one server be the OD Master, and have another machine host network homes - you'll want OS X server on that as well. Again, not necessary, but recommended. At the very least, and if possible, install the Server OS on one HD and the network homes on another. At the very very least, partition a single HD and put the Server OS on one partition and the network homes on the other. Separating the homes from the OS gives you more flexibility when backing up/troubleshooting/re-installing the OS when necessary. Having separate drives/machines for the OS and the home folders will give you speed advantages.
So, once you erase the HD, install the Server OS. When it restarts, you'll automatically have to run the configuration manager. Here, you'll enter a server name, and a FQDN for the server, for example, myserver for the server name, and myserver.mydomain.com for the FQDN. You'll also need to supply an IP address for your server (it needs a static IP address) a subnet mask, and a router IP address. When asked, you should select standalone server as your server's role.
Once it is done configuring itself, you'll be prompted to start and configure services. Only start DNS, then configure that. Once DNS is up and running (use the command 'sudo changeip -checkhostname' (minus the quotes) to check that DNS is working) you can enable Open Directory and promote your server to an Open Directory Master.
Once the server is all set, make sure your clients point to the server for DNS, and use the DirectoryAccess Utility to bind the clients to the server.
    That's a sparse outline.
    http://www.wazmac.com/servers_network/fileservers/index.htm
offers some good tutorials on specific details. If you run into problems, post back with specific questions.
Setting up 10.5 server isn't horribly difficult, but there are a lot of details. Any of those little details can frustrate you beyond belief. I speak from experience and many lost hours trying to figure those details out.

  • Advice wanted: Should I upgrade to iLife '11 on my iMac that has Aperture?

David Pogue just mentioned that iLife '11 supposedly has some kind of incredible slide show feature that turns your slides into some kind of movie trailer.
Now I don't normally do slide shows so haven't used them much in either iPhoto or Aperture. So rather than wasting all kinds of time experimenting, I figured I'd come here first for some advice.
OK, now, I have two machines: a MacBook Air with iLife '11 and an iMac with iLife '09.
The iMac (my main machine) also has Aperture 3.1 on it. In your opinion, is it worth the $50 to upgrade iLife '11 (remembering that I already have it on the MacBook Air)? Or should I just be happy using iLife '09/Aperture to generate slide shows?
And will the incredible feature Pogue is talking about make me want to use iLife '11 on my iMac so much that I will want to avoid the hassle of transferring photos to my Air every time I want to use the slide show? Does Aperture do or have something plug-ins that does something comparable to what iLife '11 does?
    What do you guys think?

slide show feature that turns your slides into some kind of movie trailer.
    That's in iMovie.
Personally, I don't see the point. But you have the thing on your MBA, so explore for yourself is the best advice.

  • Advice wanted: do i need threads or not?Stuck!

Hi, everyone! I got stuck with little program I'm writing and need your advice desperately.
I am doing temperature conversion program. In short, it's an applet with two JTextFields and four panels. JTextFields belong to the applet. Two panels are derivatives from my class called BasicThermometer extends JPanel. I made this class as flexible as I could, and it can draw pretty thermometer with needed ticks and ticks' labels as needed.
So, I've put two BasicTherm-s into my applet representing Celsius and Fahrenheit therm-rs respectively.
Other two panels are derivatives from my GradientPanel extends JPanel. They have gradient painted background with red and blue colors.
OK, here my final goal. When user input temp. to be converted in either text field converted temp. appears in other text field and tungsten of each therm-r reacts accordingly (I did that).
I can not accomplish my other task. Tungsten of each therm. responds on mouse event, so the user can input temp. by dragging or clicking it on either therm-r.( It's reacting allright). I want the temperature appear in each textfield and other therm-r tungsten move accordingly. I am unable to determine wether I need threads in it and if I do, how to design them. Should it be one thread or two? I am very new to multithreading and everything there is still blur to me. Also I'd like my gradient panels to react by fading gradient or thicken it on red (upper) panel or blue(lower panel).
I already set it flexible, so it's not a problem if I only could coordinate all my events properly.
Any advice will be helpful for me. I mean, maybe I have to change something in my classes-subclasses. To create new constructors maybe? How to deliver events from one JPanel so that the applet knew and pass it to other JPanel (i.e. to other BasicThermometer) so to repaint it as I want.In my thinking there could be thread or two that constatly tested one or other therm-r (while GUI thread is idling) and pass results to applet's method which resets other therm-r. Yesterday I failed to make them work. They worked two rounds right after start() even though my permit was set to false in each of the thermometers, and then stopped and did not wake if I clicked on either therm (I tested them by passing messages to be displayed in DOS).
Well, I am very confused. Sorry for lengthy message.
    Svetlana

  • Mac OSX 10.6 Server setup advice

hi all, I was wondering if someone could offer some advise for the setup of a server on a home network.
Here is what I have and what I'm trying to achieve.
Link up 5 macs on a home network,
1 iMac 17" which will run mac server 10.6.8
    1 iMac 24"
    1 MacBook
    2 MacBook Pros 15"
    2 iPads
    1 iPad 2 .
    4/5 iPhones
via an Virgin media 50meg SuperHub connected to a Apple Airport extreme,
I idea I have is to use the older iMac as the server, providing basic file sharing, address book access and remote VPN .
I've installed the server software on the iMac but get a little stuck on the DNS setup side of things.
So far I researched my DNS to find I don't have a static ip and setup a basic service from DyDNS.
I understand that I will have to open the required ports on the superhub to setup the remote access.
I would be greatful is someone can offer some advice with a simlar setup or can point to basic setup guide.
    Thanks in advance
    Yaddle.

    Hi John,
thanks for your advice, I have actually been using the two links you provided,
yet they both lack support for the home user, and all suggest that the users have a static ip address, but this is sadly not the case.
    has anyone used . http://www.dyndns.com/about/home_solutions.html
Does anyone use this service at home for their server and which settings did they use ?
This would at least let me think Im working along the right lines.
Im getting stuck with the Primary DNS questions along the setup route from apple setup. : (
    thanks again
    Yaddle.

  • OS X Server setup advice needed for small business

I work as audio engineer at a recording studio. I'm an experienced Mac user, but I don't have Mac Server experience. I'm my company's default IT guy. Our office consists of four people, currently using PCs, but we are changing to a Mac-based office: each person will get an iMac, and we'll also get a Mac Mini with OS X Server. And a Time Capsule for both the Apple router and Time Machine backups. The machines will be connected with ethernet for Gigabit networking.
The server will be used primarily for two things:
    1. Server-based scheduling/contact database program that each user will log-in to for access
    2. Hard drive for storing audio files that will be delivered to clients (currently FTP delivery)
I'm learning about OS X Server services - there's some great You Tube tutorials by Todd Olthoff http://www.youtube.com/user/tolthoff.
The office users currently run their computers as independent PC's with all files stored on their local machines. The network lets them share files, as well as share two printers. Note that my plan is for each office user to continue to store their files locally on the iMacs, not on the server.
I'm trying to decide how much of OS X services I can take advantage of.
I have some specific questions I'm hoping to get some advice on. These questions came up after viewing Todd's tutorials:
    1. Do I need Open Directory
I think I do, in order to create local network users. Is this a given for me?
    2. We do not have a static IP address. Do I need to establish DNS services?
    3. Do I need a verified SSL Certificate?
This is what I have for starters. Any additional advice is welcome!

Remember that ftp is wildly insecure, and a very large ftp credentials dump — reportedly including credentials from the New York Times and some other users — was just posted.    ftp is a massive pain in the rump around modern networks; the protocol design predates the uniquitious use of firewalls in modern networks.
Read: I'm not a fan of ftp.
Use sftp or VPNs where you can.

If you want to start using the same login across different Macs in your office, then you want OD.
    2. We do not have a static IP address. Do I need to establish DNS services?
You need local DNS services on your LAN (probably established via OS X Server), and you'll need external DNS to allow external folks to get to your file servers, and you'll need static IP from your ISP.  If you get to using your own mail, you'll need a proper DNS configuration — forward and reverse DNS translations and the MX record must all match — for that.
    3. Do I need a verified SSL Certificate?
Unless you're serving HTTPS or such, no.  You don't even need a certificate and can use a self-signed one, if you're small and not serving much publicly from this server, and not doing something like ecommerce, and if whatever you're doing isn't a target for those that want to spoof or crack web sites; if you're not more of a target than most of the rest of us on the 'net.
    Any additional advice is welcome!
I'd probably look to add a VPN-capable firewall router box here, and would use the Time Capsule as a so-called Access Point on the network — not as a NAT-capable gateway router.  This if you don't already have a router of some sort.  Time Capsule makes a nice home router or low-end SOHO router, but it's fairly limited in its features.
You absolutely need LAN-local DNS, and you need that correct and working and tested before you enable other services on your network.
I'd recommend using a real and registered domain on your internal network, and using a separate (and registered) domain outside your network.  You can get away with using a subdomain inside, but that means more typing as it's just longer.  I'd avoid a made-up domain, as ICANN is adding all sorts of new domains.  I'd also avoid squatting on a domain, and never use the .local top-level domain as your own DNS domain.  Leave .local to Bonjour only.
