Beep / Click (with lots of troublshooting info)
Concerning an Alum. Powerbook 1.5 Ghz (the 1.5/1.33 series); 2 gig ram; OS 10.5.6; HD only months old from OWC = Hitachi HTS541612J9AT00 (Journaled HFS+):
I have the beep / click sound coming from around my HD on the powerbook (I have read much about this all over the net). Speakers muted, it is a noticable beeeeep about 1 - 2 secs. long usually followed by the mechanical click sound like when the hard drive starts up hard after not being parked. It is not faint or static-like, almost a true beeeep.
I formatted the drive using the install disk with writing zeros to drive option. I also reset PMU and the PRAM(?). I reinstalled OS 10.5.4. Even during the install I heard this symptom once or twice. I have updated and am up to date with 10.5.6. I get this symptom every 15 secs. at its worse. It seems to be less frequent with activity happening on the computer. When closed lid sleeping it is non-existent.
I since used my original install disk to run hardware test. Every thing came up okay on the extended test. The only time I have not heard this frequent, recurring beep / click is when I was booted up to the hardware test disk. During the test and sitting there awake after the test for some time there was never once this beep / click.
I have tried many different settings in energy saver; tried quitting random things in activity monitor; all to no avail. Operation of the computer is otherwise normal, speed and everything is great. This started out of nowhere a few days ago. Is this just a drive problem or ?? - any input or help or familiarity with this is appreciated!
Have you tried reseating the cable to ensure all pins are seated completely? Otherwise, contact OWC tech support, as the drive is under warranty, and what you describe isn't normal. Clicking when the heads park, is not abnormal, however, the beep you describe is.

The other threads on this issue have gotten completely out of hand with most new posters not bothering to read the older posts. So we still get "It's the optical drive" and "It's a problem with all 7200 RPM drives" or "It's all MacBooks that have the problem." Those posts aren't helping any of us with the specific issue noted in this subject fix our problem and gather helpful information. This thread is only for those experiencing issues with the CTO Seagate Seagate Momentus 7200.4 ST9500420ASG 500GB 7200 RPM hard drive. If you don't have that drive and are having problems with your new MacBook Pro, please start a new topic or look for an existing one that matches your issue.
_CTO Seagate Momentus 7200.4 ST9500420ASG 500GB 7200 RPM Problems_:
1. *The drive beeps intermittently*. Unusual sound and not typical of any other hard drive I've ever used in a MacBook Pro or PowerBook.
2. *The drive clicks/clacks quite loudly*. This is much louder than typical drive behavior.
3. Most importantly, *the drive freezes or hangs* in conjunction with the other sounds. It causes games to freeze for a second. It causes HD video to hang momentarily. It brings whatever task you're doing to a complete stop for a second or so, several times per hour.
4. These issues all occur while the MacBook Pro is sitting on a desk, untouched and unmoving. It's not related to any specific user input or action.
Troubleshooting
1. SMS: The built in SMS may conflict with the G-Force technology in the Seagate drive. While it's odd that Apple chose to use the drives with G-Force, disabling SMS has not fixed the issue.
2. *OS X*: It's been suggested this is a problem with OS X and its power management. However, users have reported the problems continue when booted into Boot Camp. This would seem to eliminate OS X as a factor.
3. *Normal Behavior*: Several users have said this is normal behavior for 7200 RPM drives. Apple themselves have reportedly told this to users calling for a fix. I can only say I've used 7200 RPM drives in my MacBooks exclusively since they were available and I've never had this issue with any of them. This is not normal behavior, especially the freeze/hang associated with the beeps and clicks.
4. *Change Energy Saver Settings*: Set Energy Saver so the drives won't sleep. This has not fixed the issue for me. I always set the drives not to sleep as a matter of practice (necessary for HD video & Aperture work) and the issue remains.
5. *Problem with all MacBooks regardless of drive*: This is total b.s. We've got several MBPs here at my company and none of them have the issue.
_One Solution_
In May, I purchased a Seagate Momentus 7200.4 ST9500420AS 500GB 7200 RPM from NewEgg.com. Note that this is a non G-Force model of the same CTO drive. I had been using it in an external FW enclosure. I decided to swap the drives. *With the NewEgg 500/7200 drive in my 2009 MBP (3.06GHz), all of the issues are gone. The drive doesn't beep, doesn't click, and never, ever hangs or freezes.* It's whisper quite and very, very fast. I literally can't hear it unless I put my ear on the case.
The CTO drive, now housed in a FW800 external enclosure, continues to have the same problems. It no longer beeps, but clicks and clacks loudly, and still hangs and freezes. This would seem to entirely isolate the drive as the problem and remove the MacBook Pro from the equation.
Some posters in the other thread claim that Apple engineering has reviewed the problem, witnessed the beeps, clicks, and freezes, and had labeled them "normal behavior." If true, this is unacceptable. It is impossible to do any professional work, or even play a game for that matter, with a drive that constantly hangs or freezes. We have to stay diligent in pursuing a fix. Be polite, be friendly, but be persistent.

That said - I think there is a business strategy behind all this. Apple is saying there is no problem so that they don't have to recall ALL drives in whatever spec, revision, etc., since that is an extremely expensive resolution. Instead, I think they will quietly fix it in an update and all of a sudden you will notice your drive isn't clicking and hesitating. Perhaps if there are drives out there that can't be corrected in this manner, they will issue a recall/replacement. Being in the software business, I tend to think it will play out this way. The few hotheads that actually return their machine will pale in comparison to the cost of a recall - especially if the affected batch of drives was large in scope.
I think if everyone sits tight it will get fixed. If not, the drive is only a $100-$150 component of this expensive computer and it can be user replaced. I do however strongly encourage anyone with this problem to report it to Apple regardless of the outcome. -
How do I use just 1 click with move tool (command v) to select layer within group?
I'm on Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Photoshop CS3 10.0.
Is there a way to click just once with "command V" to select a layer within a group?
I used to be able to do it, and on my laptop I can do it now (same OS and Photoshop) but the mac I use for my design work won't do it...I have to also right click and select the layer that is highlighted. I have a many multilayered Photoshop document with lots of groups, and it's an extra time consuming step.
Is there some preference I can turn on? Or some other simple keystroke?

Macbook Pro mid 2010 hard drive beep, click, freeze BACK after Lion?

Like many others, mine stopped beeping after the Software Update released by Apple when they admitted there was a problem. However, since I've upgraded to Lion, the hard drive is back to its old ways of beeping, clicking, and freezing. Anyone else having this problem again? Anyone else think this is an odd coincidence? I called support and, after going through the usual troubleshooting, they escalated to a supervisor who wanted me to go through the same troubleshooting only to tell me that I should take it into an Apple Store where they'll likely send it in for testing. I haven't done it yet because it's rather inconvenient to have to jump through the same hoops and be without my computer again when the problem seems fairly obvious based on my history with this machine. I'm actually hoping it's hardware failure at this point so I don't have to wait for them to acknowledge another problem.Hi Luke,
The click/beep was happening more and more and was starting to drive me nuts.
I contacted Apple/Seagate but neither were helpful at all.
I went to my local Apple representative but they said they would need to hold on to my laptop for 1-2weeks while they checked out the issue and then replaced the HDD and the same model, this was something I couldn't do as I need my laptop for work everyday.
Apple's online support (+ call) just told me to bring it into my local Apple representative so that went nowhere.
In the end I shelled out my own money to fix Seagate/Apples problem and bought a Seagate Momentus XT 500GB drive which I have had no issue with since I got it, about 6 months.
It also speeds up my Mac with the inbuilt SSD cache. I recommend it.

I have 2 copies of Firefox open (two different windows with lots of tabs), if I reboot can I restore both sessions? I am familiar with clicking history/ restore previous session, but don't want to reboot to let windows update to do it's thing unless I can restore both sessions.

My bridge pause all the time. I have to wait 30 seconds after selecting a picture or click the right button of the mouse. I have installed a new windows 8.1, and a fresh CD6. But still these problems in Bridge. No problems in Photoshop. What to do
What is the problem:
When I choose a picture in Bridge I have to wait 20 till 30 seconds (sometimes more).
When I choose with right click of the mouse. I have to wait the same time.
When I choose the menu. Also
After opening the picture(s) in Camera RAW. There are no problems
In Photoshop there are also no problems. Everything works all right.
Only Bridge have these problems. But I can’t work with it.

Before you buy.If you are a long time Nokia/Symbian fan then you will Know full well that Nokia phones ALWAYS improve with software updates, Symbian will not be abandoned and will not be replaced by WP7, it will continue to evolve and improve, as will the handsets. Anyone who desires or wants a different OS should try one, because it's a free world, but really, the 'perfect' OS doesn't exist, and Symbian suits me for now and I will rely on Nokia to keep it up to date, and reliable.

Website with lots of technical information for farmers
Hi,
I am wondering how to set this up - I have a site with lots of technical notes that I want to put up under 5 different categories. I want to include a search function so the customer can search for the info and it comes up. However I also want it to be very clear on the homepage that the site is a tool for farmers and they can see straight away that it is a resource site and easy to access info.
Should the articles be pages or an item in a web app? I haven't used webapps for along time so not really sure.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm wondering if I should update to firefox 5 from firefox 3.6? I use Zotero for my dissertation research and I have lots of stored info in Firefox 3.6 like frequent flier numbers that load automatically that I don't want to lose. Suggestions?
My advice is to stick with Firefox 3.6.x for a while yet, it is still supported.
Otherwise, see the Zotero website for advice about their program and updating to Firefox 5.0 (or 6.0 when it is released in 3 weeks). -
I've recently been given a macbook pro from uni, with lots of adobe software on. I want to pair it with my iMac which has music etc and is it possible to get the software to the imac and the files to the macbook?Giving me the best of both :-)
You would need the original installation disks or files for the Adobe software to get it onto your iMac, and having it on two computers may not be allowed by your university's licensing. Talk to whoever issued the MacBook.
As to the music, just copy it over to the MacBook, either via Home Sharing, file sharing, or an external storage medium (hard drive, USB flash drive, etc.).

I would like to put my i-pad photo albums into alphabetical order. The advice received previously was to "right click" on an album in the left pane. I do not have a left pane in my photos folder, how would I get this? Also I only have touch screen so what would I "right click" with? thank you

Is there a way to overwrite the ORIGINAL songs with my iTunes library info?

I would like to know if there is a way to overwrite the original songs with my iTunes library info? What I mean is, I have MANY songs that I have transferred to iTunes (and were obviously not purchased from iTunes) and I always put the info (such as the album name, the album art, artist, composer, etc.) and it leaves the original song (like the songs that are in "My music" section that is in "My Documents") with the same info. For example : The song that I put into the library will be "chamiionaire feastureing flip"... and in the iTunes, I put it as "Chamillionaire ft. Lil Flip". How do I make it so that it replaces the "original" info (located in my documents) with the info I put in?Same question. Used to have an iPod. Lost it (best digital player ever), now I use other portable device. The mp3 files have their id3tag edited in the original file, but the .m4a don't!.

Hello, I downloaded an ntfs systemfile from tuxera and used it to convert a usb stick so I could put more than the fat32 4gb on, my Imac froze a while after so I turned it off the on and now I have blue vertical lines on boot up and the a white screen with lots of tine blue symbols after, mouse pointer moves but thats about it.
Have used R and cmd to get a menu up but once I choose one of the four options my mouse is rendered useless and I cant get any further, have downloaded, to another usb stick recovery disk assisstant and am trying to use that in conjunction with the lion option on the previously mentioned screen, computer was responding really slowly and has now frozen on the terms of software license agreement (maybe the last hurdle!) can anyone pleeeeeease help!!!!!??????It's likely that the boot drive is failing, or that there's some other hardware fault. Run the Apple Hardware Test.

Even if the test is negative, you should make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested more thoroughly. -
When i use view as list in finder and open a folder with many files i cant right click with mouse without selecting or highlighting a file....i just want to right click to paste an item or create a new folder...what can i do?
Thx for that im gonna try it....but is there a way to do it without using toolbar or cmd-c...? i mean using only the mouse?why does it have to highlight the file even though i click a bit next to it....?using icon view i can right click next to the folder and i wont have a problem but with list view that i prefer using it will highlight the whole row.....and i dont find free space to right click cause i got many files
