Beginner needs Help with using FCP

Hi I just opened up FCP and have no idea how to use it. How can I watch free Video Tutorials?
Most videos I want to use in a video project are Xvid .avi videos and I have a hard time scrubbing through them. How can I make my editing for those more smooth.

Congratulations on purchasing a very complicated and deep collection of software. This forum is for technical support issues - not teaching you the software.
Your Xvid material will have to be converted to an editable format. What constitutes an editable format is listed in your Easy Setup list in FCP.
A good place to start learning the program is reading the manual - particularly the sections that introduce the software, spell out supported formats and describe the work flow.
For specific tutorials, Lydia.com is useful.
Ken Stone's website contains a great deal of helpful information.

from the Solaris CD?

Beginner needs help with simple code.

I just statrted learnind java, and I need some help with this simple program. For some reason everytime I enter my Farenheit value, the Celsius conversion returns as 0.0. Would really appreciate the help. Thanks.

Beginner - Need Help With Soundboard

Hey everyone,
I'm just learning Flash, and from various online tutorials, I
have managed to get this far with the soundboard I want to make.
Example Soundboard -

As you can see from the example, this will be a very simple
soundboard. All I want it to do is trigger and loop sounds, like it
does now. But I have a couple things more I want it to do.
In the example, in the "Over" state of the buttons, I've
added text to show what each button will trigger (Test Loop 1, Test
Loop 2).
But once the sound is triggered (via OnRelease) and the user
moves the cursor off the button - I want the Over state mode of the
button to remain showing as the audio loop plays (so the user
visually sees what audio loop is currently playing).
How would I do this?
Also, I'm considering making each button be it's own on/off
control, instead of a completely separate "Off" button.
I've found 4-5 different online tutorials to accomplish this
same feature. And have tried and succeeded at doing some of them.
But what I would like to know is, what method would be the
easiest and most compatible, inconjunction to what I would like to
do above?
Last question...
On the example soundboard, I notice that if you hover the
cursor over where the text appears (Test Loop 1, Test Loop 2) it
flickers the Over state of the buttons.
Why does it do this, and can that be prevented?
I know for a lot of you, these are probably simple questions.
So, Hopefully someone can help me out. I've already done a lot
searching for solutions, as well as tried the Flash "Help". But as
a beginner, I'm not sure exactly what I need to search for.
Any help will be sincerely appreciated!

1. you need to use movieclip buttons instead of true buttons
to have better control of their up, over and down states.
2. you can make each button a toggle by using toggle variable
that you have execute one set of statements when the toggle is true
and another set with the toggle variable is false. you'll "toggle"
that variable each time your button is released
3. you're seeing those problems with the text flickering
because that text must be part of your buttons hit area..

Need help with using new ipod as hard drive. please!

Hi. Has anyone had any problems using the ipod as a hard drive between two systems? I have an old 4th generation ipod which I used on my PC. That ipod worked great between macs and pcs as a hard drive. But recently it is completely screwed up. Anyway, I got a new Mac book pro and a 5th generation 60gb ipod.
Now, I'm trying to get some stuff off my pc and transfer it into my mac. In my pc it comes up in "my computer" but keeps asking me to format the hard drive whenever I do the drag and drop of files into it. I've already formatted it for my mac, but haven't put anything on it yet. So I guess I could just do that for the transfer and reformat it for the mac and then put my music on it.
I just want to know, it worked so well between mac and pc as a hard drive when originally formatted for my pc. will it not work the other way around? Will I have to keep reformatting it for the pc every time and then lose any information and all my music if I want to use it in that way? Or is there something I'm doing wrong? I would really appreciate any help at all that anyone could give me. Who really needs a 60gb anyway, if not to be able to transfer files back and forth between home and work, right?

Thank you for your reply. It cleared up a lot of confusion for me. But I have one more question.
See, I looked both of those software applications up, and it seems those are to be installed on the windows operating system. My plan is to eventually stop using my PC and give it away to goodwill, however, for work purposes- which is freelance- I'd need to use the ipod as a nice small portable hard drive- I'm a photographer, and work with big files, so I need the larger space that a flash drive can't give me.
So, is there any type of mac formatting on the ipod that can also be read by the pc? Or is there a 3rd party software that can be installed on the ipod that will enable it to be read on the pc and mac while retaining its mac formatting?
If not I guess I'll just have to go back to the old and extremely inconvenient way of doing things. I really wish mac would have mentioned these things before in all their descriptions.

Beginner - need help with custom profiles

I've got 30-day demo versions of both Aperture and Lightroom trying to work out which is best for printing using custom profiles I've had done for a selection of textured art papers for use on my Epson R2400. I've read the printing documentation for both products.
In Aperture, I select print from the menu and open the print dialogue window. Then I open the printer settings window choosing the correct media and switching off Epson 'Color Adjustment' and saving the settings. Then I'm selecting my color profile from Aperture's 'ColorSync Profile' option in the print window and making sure 'Black Point Compensation' is selected. Then I'm pressing print.
In Lightroom 2, I select print from the menu and scroll down to the 'Color Management' tab in the print module. Here I'm choosing my custom profile from the drop down list and setting rendering intent as 'Perceptual'. On clicking the print button the default print window opens and I'm switching off Epson 'Color Adjustment' and selecting my preferred paper type. Then I'm pressing print.
Now I will admit that I'm new to printing with profiles and a complete newbie to Aperture and Lightroom. However, my prints from Lightroom are absolutely perfect, but colours are differing in Aperture prints. In particular, prints are slightly lighter and washed-out. I'm wondering if I might be missing a step somewhere in Aperture? It seems strange that both applications follow roughly the same print procedure yet I'm getting different results using the same profiles and images. I'd much rather use Aperture so I'm trying to seek an explanation for the change in colors.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

A lot of people including me have had problems in this area. There may have been some problems but in my case I was so absorbed in trying different solutions it is hard to say what worked when.
This works for me using an HP 9180:
1. In the View drop down select Printing Profile and choose your paper. This step is not critical but can be helpful.
2. select Print Image and we will work through the menu in sequence.
3. Select your printer
4. Click on Print settings
Click on the Cover Page arrows and you will be given a number of other choices. Select Paper Type/Quality. Select your paper and possibly adjust the other values but generally I leave these alone unless i specifically want Borderless printing.
Click save
5. back on the print menu select paper size. I usually select best fit next.
6. Select Colorsync Profile and again select your paper.
7. Keep Black Point clicked on.
8. I find that I need to set my Gamma between 1.10 and 1.20.
9. I usually click on the Loupe and check to see if Sharpening is needed.
10. Adjust scaling and width to your needs.
11. I then Print as I have not found that Previewing helps me to improve my Workflow.
It may all seem straightforward but this now works for me.
When this all started there were many saying how important it was to calibrate the screen, many tried this but is still did not help solve the problem. From what i understand all the Canon printers are capable of giving excellent results with Aperture. i hope that you join the community of satosfied users. Good luck.

NEED HELP WITH USING STATIC METHOD - PLEASE RESPOND ASAP!

I am trying to set a value on a class using a static method. I have defined a servlet attribute (let's call it myAttribute) on my webserver. I have a serlvet (let's call it myServlet) that has an init() method. I have modified this init() method to retrieve the attribute value (myAttribute). I need to make this attribute value accessible in another class (let's call it myOtherClass), so my question revolves around not knowing how to set this attribute value on my other class using a static method (let's call it setMyStuff()). I want to be able to make a call to the static method setMyStuff() with the value of my servlet attribute. I dont know enough about static member variables and methods. I need to know what to do in my init() method. I need to know what else I need to do in myServlet and also what all I need in the other class as well. I feel like a lot of my problems revolve around not knowing the proper syntax as well.

Need help with using cd templates

I'm very new to Photoshop and trying to figure out how to use and edit templates for a 2 panel cd insert and the Tray Card template (back cover of the cd). I want to just use pictures for the 2 panel but the Tray card needs to just have a color or design background with text. I seem to have gotten a project started using the tray card template but I'm having trouble figuring out how to get going with it and add a color background and I'm assuming I'll need to use the layers function? If anyone has any advice or can help me get started, I would really appreciate it!! Thanks!!

Oracle Beginner Needs Help with 8.1.6/W2K Password

I just started reading this cool forum and I need your help. I have been using Oracle 8.1.5 for win 98 for a while with scott/tiger. Now I switched to 8.1.6 for W2K and none of the password combinations seem to work. As I am a student just testing Oracle out, what should I do? If this is not a licensing issue, can someone help me out? Thanks for your time...

You need to set the project properties.
Go to Project > Project Properties and click the Run tab.
Choose the Application tab on the Run page, and click the ellipsis (...) button opposite the "Main class:" label. Now find your package in the class browser, and select the class containing the main method you want to use.
Note that you must have your application set up correctly as a project, with a package directory structure (usually done for you by the new project wizard) else you'll not find your class listed.

Beginner - Need Help with Text

I can't seem to get text in a table cell to do what I want.
For instance, I can't use the 'tab' button as I would do in
Microsoft Word - is this something that is not possible in
Dreamweaver (8)? To compensate for that, I tried to just use the
space bar to seperate things but that doesn't work either - seems
like I can only insert one space and that's all. I've tried the
'align' buttons, but that moves ALL of the text rather than the
desired line.

Wow - okay. You're first mistake is thinking that Dreamweaver
will act as
Microsoft Word. Period.
That's never the case, nor will it ever be the case. You need
to close down
Dreamweaver, and start by reading some basic tutorials on
HTML and CSS. A

I'd reccomend anything by Eric Meyer. To answer your

I need help with using Tags in mavericks.

When i tag a file(for example i tag it RED) than i go to the Finder and click on RED, i will not be shown any of the files or stuff i tag.
How do i solve this issue.

Hello Alfred. Thanks for reaching out. Yes, all the individual files are created -- whether 1 or 50. Here is the gist of my workflow
1. Find Finder items
This searches a specific folder for a PDF file (I previously placed the multi-page file I needed split into this folder)
I verified this step works
2. Rename Finder Items
This renames the PDF file from Step 1 to a specific name
I verified this step works
3. Get Specified Finder Items
This gets the file from Step 2.
I verified this step works
4. Split PDF
This splits the file from Step 3 to single-page files and places them on the desktop.
It replaces any similar named files on the Desktop.
I verified this step works
5. Launch Application
This step launch the Mail app
I verified this step works
6. Open Finder Items
This step should attach each file created in Step 4 in a separate email.
This is where a few emails are created and the workflow stops.
The original PDF file I am using has 9 sheets. I verified all 9 single-page files were created and placed on the Desktop. I also verified each file was a valid PDF file. The workflow created 6 emails with the first 6 single-page PDF files then stopped.
The error message I receive in Automator is:
Open finder items failed - 1 error
Mail.app Application can not open file /Users/myname/Desktop/filename-page7.pdf
After these steps, I get each file and move them to the trash. I haven't verified these steps as the workflow stops at Step 6.
This all worked fine in Mavericks but not in Yosemite.

Raw Beginner need help with Adobe Photoshop CS2

I am reading Photoshop CS2 for digital photographers by Scott Kelby. I am looking at pg 55 if any one has this book and would like to visually see what I am about to describe. I own Adobe Photoshop CS2 software. After bringing up Adobe bride RAW on my PC, I then see all the settings, Exposure, Shadows, Brightness, Contrast, and Saturation.. Located directly above all of these settings is Auto and Default which you can click on and adjust all settings at the same time. If you don't like what you see you click on Default to go back to the original, you can then make your adjustments individually. In my CS2 book there is an Auto box you can check or un-check beside each setting, Exposure, Shadows, Brightness, and Contrast. My question is how do I get the Auto box beside each setting so I can simply put a check in that box and preview changes individually instead of the Auto and Default on top which changes every setting at the same time? I hope this make since to you, if not I will try to explain again.

Thank you Ramon for your help. I will just be happy with what I have, which works fine but I thought it might be better for me to have the individual Auto check box for each setting. Thank you for the tip to double-click the sliders to reset it to default, it works in CS2 also:) Actually this gives me more control and works out great now that I think about it. I am sure there are more handy little tips I should know about but don't because I am a beginner in learning RAW. Hopefully I'll stumble across a book or some thing over the internet that will help me with my learning curve.

Need help with using graphics in swing components

Hi. I'm new to Java and trying to learn it while also developing an application for class this semester. I've been following online tutorials for about 2 months now, though, and so I'm not sure my question counts as a "new to Java" question any more as the code is quite long.
Here is the basic problem. I started coding the application as a basic awt Applet (starting at "Hello World") and about a month in realized that Swing components offer better buttons, panels, layouts, etc. So I converted the application, called BsfAp, to a new JApplet and started adding JPanels and JComponents with layout managers. My problem is, none of the buffered graphics run in any kind of JPanel, only the buttons do. I assume the buffered graphics are written straight to the JApplet top level container instead but I'm not entirely sure.

What I would like to do is this - take everything in the GUI left of the tabbed button pane and put it into a JScrollPane so that I can use a larger grid size with map display I can scroll around. The grid size I would like to use is more like 700x1000 pixels, but I only want to display about 400x400 pixels of it at a time in the JScrollPane. Then I could also move this JScrollPane around with layout manager. I think this is possible, but I don't know how to do it.
I'm sure the code is not organized or optimized appropriately to those of you who use Java every day, but again I'm trying to learn it. ;-)

Couple of recs:
* Don't override paint and paint directly on the JApplet. Paint on a JPanel and override paintComponent.
* The simplest way to display a graphic is to put an image into an ImageIcon and show this in a JLabel. This can then easily go inside of the JScrollPane.
* You can also create a graphics JPanel that overrides the paintComponent, draw the image in that and show that inside of the JScrollPane.
* don't call paint() directly. Call repaint if you want the graphic to repaint.
