Beginner's Question re: using .Mac w/ iChat AV

I'm a longtime .Mac user who currently has two computers sync'd via .Mac. I know that Instant Messaging is available through my .Mac account...but is there a way to do IM between the two computers that are sync'd (i.e., logged into) that account? I want to be able to use .Mac IM to do video chats from my Powerbook to my home iMac while I'm on the road. If that won't work, what do I need to do?

No; you need two separate full, trial, or expired .Mac accounts or AIM screen names to chat between two computers which aren't on a LAN. Chatting over a LAN can be done through Bonjour.

  • Question about using mac mini as a server

I run a small non-profit agency. Our server (A Mac G4 from about 4 years ago) recently died a somewhat painful death, and we need to get a new one. We're trying to be thrifty, but i don't want to get something that won't meet our needs. Our server needs are very basic. No more than 8 people will ever access the server at the same time, and generally it will be 2-4 people at once. We keep Word and Excel docs on it (It used to host our database, but we will have a separate server for our new database). Do you think a Mac Mini with the following specs would meet our needs:
    80 GB Hard Drive
    1 GB RAM
    1.42 GHz PowerPC G4

    Frank:
Thanks so much for responding! One question about your post. When you say that the Mac Mini cannot boot in OS 9, does that mean that if I wanted it to hold Filemaker Pro 4 files (which runs on OS 9), that it cannot do this? We would not be running Filemaker on the Mini, just storing the files. We would run Filemaker off of our desktop computers. Sorry, I don't know a ton about computers, so sometimes I need clarification about the terms that people use.-Rob

    Hi,
    You can't.
Messages - the replacement for iChat in Mountain Lion and beyond will  do Screen Sharing  but only to the accounts it did in iChat 5 and 6  (actually it includes iChat 4 as well)
That is to say in earlier version of iChat you could login to AIM and Jabber servers as well as enabling the Bonjour option to chat on your LAN.
All these will do Video and Audio only chats which in turn means they will Screen Share.
At iChat 6 an Yahoo option was added but it can only Text chat (it can't even send Files or Pics)
This means only the Internet able accounts that login in to AIM or to a Jabber server  can Video and therefore Screen Share.
The iMessages account will Invoke FaceTime if you use the Video icon during text chat.  (I.e. it is not Video inside the app like the AIM or Jabber accounts can do)
    NOTE.
AIM includes Apple Issued Apple ID as Valid AIM Screen Names.
Google Mail ID s can be used and Google Talk IDs with Messages as they run a Jabber server.
Facebook allow you to create a Chat ID (Facebook Chat ID) which is also a Jabber server.

I would like to ask the following question. I am using mac os x 10.9 maverics me quicktime player version 10.3. Can I trim a video recording without having to press the pause or save it as a file? Or can I add a new recording to a video file? Thanks in advance

    Well,
I tried the "Internet Recovery" option and finally saw Mac OS X Mountain Lion's install page but after waiting 7 hours when I just thought its going to start installing, I got another progress bar with 36 hours remining time to download "Additional Components" then after progressing 2-3 hours, it shows "Unable to write installation something..., Contact Apple Care"
Then I accidently rebooted the machine and now it seems Internet Recovery don't work anymore, it shows "support.apple.com - 40 something!" error, and finally when I tried to reboot using Recovery HD, I found it's gone as-well!
To be honest, I don't know what to do now, I am and dissapointed... also I do not have any Apple Store nearby, there is an authorized country reseller almost 650/km far away from my residents and they even charges too high (like $250) for doing such repairs (as per phone conversation)
If anyone have any idea or anything to help me with, please do share- I'd be eternally grateful!

    Hi All Masters,
I'm a beginner of CS3 and a mac user, here I got a question looking for some help.
Does anyone know there's a work for editing the photo to painting styles such as watercolor painting, oil painting, pastel drawing, colored pencil or pencil sketching in Adobe serials ?
If not, does anyone know any software offering these features,

The best overall art styles plugin for PS is probably AlienSkin's SnapArt. I'd say their filters are a cut above Photoshop's which are old and have never been updated.
    http://www.alienskin.com/snapart/snapart_examples.aspx
That being said, the best painterly interpretations of photographs I've ever seen are done with Painter.
    http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite/us/en/Product/1166553885783#tabview=tab0
There is a basic version sort of like Photoshop Elements which is still better than Photoshop for artistically rendering photos into 'paintings.'

  • Ichat: 'no data received for 10 seconds' message and both users using macs

my sister and i are both using macs. i have a desktop and she has a laptop. we used ichat several times with no problem. she's in cali, i'm in utah. then all of a sudden we started getting 'no data received for 10 seconds' error every time we try to chat. i've tried to find some answers on the boards, but all the explanations are over my head. i'm not a techie, so i needs things in simple, layman terms.
we're using AIM, and like i said, we're both on macs.
this is the error message the connection doctor gave me:
    Chat ended with error -20
2007-04-04 22:23:38 -0600: No data has been received for the last 10 seconds.

    Chat ended with error -20
i would appreciate any assistance anyone can give me. thank you!

    Hi Matt,
    Item 1
Go to System Preference > Sharing > Firewall Tab
    Is this On ?
If it is do you have a separate iChat Setting (Not the bonjour ichat preset) ?
If it is On then do the pic around the Second pic here http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/page4.html#_ports
    Item 2
Next go to System Preferences > Network
In here choose the Connection method from the second drop down.
    The choose the TCP/IP tab
From the information you posted in the first post I suggest that reads "Using DHCP" in the drop down and then an IP of 192.168.1.101
Further down it lists the DNS servers and SubNet Mask
    And the the "Router" IP
This "router" maybe a actual router or a modem that routes.
The number at the end of your log is suggestive of a Linksys device.
    Info for you 1
Now if this a router we will also ned to know if the Modem is doing DHCP (You should not have two device doing this)
If the "router" IP is 192.168.1.1 then type this in to a we browser.
The Pop up will ask for a User ID and Password which for a Linksys are bith admin by defualt.
    Info needed 1
If you get this far can you tells how this set up page says you are connected to the modem ?
    Info needed 2
If it is a modem can you tells the same info ?
Either may say DHCP but we need to ascertain where that is coming from. A cable modem may be passing the DHCP IP given by your ISP and we would not have to worry about that.
    Info for you 2
Now if the set up is Modem > Linsys > Computer I need you to find out the IP the modem is giving out or passsing on to see if it is a DHCP server.
    Info needed 3
Can you connect the computer direct to the modem and repeat Item 2 please and tells that IP.
    Item 3
If that IP is the same as when you go to this site http://myip.dk/ then the modem is doing pass through and all we have to do it make sure the Linksys device has the port open.
    Summary.
    1) You now should be able to tell and set the Ports in the Mac Firewall
    2) You should be able to find out the IP your computer is getting from your router device (Same as the Log)
    3) You should be able to access the router if it is a Linksys device.
    4) You can tells us if the device is s router or a combined roter and Modem.
    5) If there is a separate modem you will be able to tell if the IP is being passed through to the Router (when normally set up)
    6) You will know what that IP is.
Please post back with the information I have asked for.
Also lets us know makes and models of any router and/or modem

  • Configuring ichat to use .mac

I'm trying to get my ichat to use my .mac id and password. But evertime I open ichat, it gives me an error message that says my AOL password is incorrect. I don't want anything to do with AOL or its AIM service.
Took the problem to the Apple store, they couldn't fix it; Apple Care couldn't fix it - they suggested a reinstallation of the operating system (tiger 10.4.11), which I did - still no fix.
    Any suggestions. Thanks Dan

At present iChat still list using @Mac.com names and has not changed to show a choice for @me.com names.
@mac.com names are still valid and the process of starting up with Mobile Me that has replaced .Mac links them.
It seems the AIM servers are only talking to the @me.com list to verify Screen Names and Passwords.
This means that when you Add an @mac.com name at this point in time you get the Password error message.
@me.com, if you have a very new name that was not an @mac one before, and/or want to move an @mac name you have used before such as a Trail Account that has not been moved to MobileMe/@me.com,you will need to follow the fix as listed above or as you say get an AIM Name.

  • Beginner font questions

These are some beginner font questions if someone has the time/patience.
I've never paid much attention to fonts over the years, never installed
any other than those that might have come with applications. Early on,
15 years ago or so, I settled on Palatino and I've stayed with it for
most docs (Word 5.1a and now Word vX) and often for other apps (Safari,
    Now).
I just upgraded to Tiger (10.4.4) and I use Word vX.
    Questions:
    1. I gather from looking at Font Book that when I'm using Palatino in
Tiger that OS X is getting it from my OS 9 System folder for Classic.
It does not look like Palatino is in any other locations including MS
Office vX. Does that make sense?
    2. I always thought that Palatino was a very basic, always available
    font. Not so?
    3. If I decide to stop using Classic, and I'm close to that time, can I
transfer those fonts to OS X? If so, to which location is best.
    4. And are the same fonts used for printing and screen? In other words
back in pre OS X days I thought some fonts came in screen versions and
print versions but my memory is hazy on that. Not only that.
Thank you for any education or links for info.

    That's correct.

It seems to be out of favor.

Yes, you can just put it in Users/username/Library/Fonts (or Library/Fonts for all users).

  • Can you use FaceTime or iChat to call a non-iPhone?

Can you use FaceTime or iChat to call a someone who does not have an iPhone?

    Hi,
    Yes.
Just to be clear let me qualify that.
FaceTime can contact other devices that use FaceTime either by a iPhone Number (includes some iPads) or an Apple ID.
There is a FaceTime for Mac version so the person you contact (by Apple IDs) does not have to be on an iPhone.
As well as iPhones certain other iOS 5 devices can use FaceTime and these include iPads as already mentioned and certain version of iPod Touches.
As iChat does not work to iPhones and is an Instant Messaging app that can do Video and Audio Only chats and Screen Sharing, File Transfers, Pics-in-chats, iChat Theatre and more then the answer is also Yes.
I suspect the question was really "Can I contact other phones that can do Video using FaceTime ?"  the answer to that is No.
iChat can Text chat to most client apps on Phones (Jabber or AIM for instance)
Video needs iChat (Or AIM or Trillain on a  PC).

  • A few questions from a Mac newbie

    1. What kind of maintainence should I be doing on the mac? Do I need to defrag or run system cleaners (like ccleaner for windows)?
    2. Will it eventually get messed up like Windows, or should be running as good as new years from now without reformatting?
    3. Am I correct in assuming Software Update only updates the System and the official mac applications (iChat, iMovie etc.)?
    4. I know viruses aren't as much of a threat, but should I install antivirus just to be on the safe side?
    5. When I install new software, I'm assuming settings are saved somewhere else besides the Applications folder. Do these remove themselves when I delete the software?
    6. If I eventually update to Leopard, will that do a clean install over Tiger, not corrupting anything? On Windows I know that upgrading Windows basically screwed over everything and messed up the registry permanently, and I'm hoping this isn't an issue with Mac OS.
    7. Lastly, I've noticed that the longer the system is running for, the more memory is used (according to iStat at least), regardless of how many programs I'm running. Is this normal behavior, and is it slowing down the system?
Thanks, and I'm loving Mac OS, my only regret is that I didn't switch years ago.
Macbook (2 GHz Core 2 Duo, 1 GB RAM)   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    1. What kind of maintainence should I be doing on the mac? Do I need to defrag or run system cleaners (like ccleaner for windows)?
After any system update or security update, use DiskUtility to repair permissions. Maybe/maybe not necessary in all instances, but a good plan. You may also boot from an installer disk and run DiskUtility to repair the disk, maybe twice a year. You can also run fsck with the same frequency
    http://macs.about.com/od/osx/a/running_fsck.htm
I follow the repair permissions rule, but seldom run fsck unless I notice problems. Opinions may vary.
    2. Will it eventually get messed up like Windows, or should be running as good as new years from now without reformatting?
    I lost my crystal ball
Seriously, disk corruption is a cross platform issue. If you're not the type to install every shareware app you can find, and don't mess around with stuff unnecessarily, or fool around with files you aren't familiar with, you should be OK.
    3. Am I correct in assuming Software Update only updates the System and the official mac applications (iChat, iMovie etc.)?
    Yes.
    4. I know viruses aren't as much of a threat, but should I install antivirus just to be on the safe side?
    Again, with the crystal ball
At this point, it's probably not necessary. However, you may wish to consider some course of action if you swap files with Windows users on a regular basis. Your Mac will be happy to host malware through infected emails, flash drives, web sites, etc...
    Many folks recommend ClamAV
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/24449
There are commercial apps available, but IMHO, they're not the most polished apps, possibly because there's no real demand for a reliable av app for OS X at this point.
    5. When I install new software, I'm assuming settings are saved somewhere else besides the Applications folder. Do these remove themselves when I delete the software?
Yes, no, and sort of. Most of apps are contained in a package. Control-click on an application's icon, and you can view the stuff in the package. Deleting the app's icon form the Application folder will get rid of most of it. There will be preference files, mostly in youruserfolder/Library/Preferences. There may be scattered files elsewhere, but generally, none of them are big files, nor should they hurt performance if they stick around.
    6. If I eventually update to Leopard, will that do a clean install over Tiger, not corrupting anything? On Windows I know that upgrading Windows basically screwed over everything and messed up the registry permanently, and I'm hoping this isn't an issue with Mac OS.
In the past, OS X has allowed you to perform a simple upgrade when going from 10.x to 10.y
I usually perform an archive and install, but that's just me.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
    7. Lastly, I've noticed that the longer the system is running for, the more memory is used (according to iStat at least), regardless of how many programs I'm running. Is this normal behavior, and is it slowing down the system?
Yes, and maybe. OS X likes memory. I recommend 1 GB for 10.4. 10.3 seemed pretty good with 512 MB. Apple Discussions policy says I shouldn't speculate about memory requirements here for Leopard, so I won't, but you can think about the possibilities. More is better. If you fire up activity monitor and notice that you're down to 10 MB of free memory, I'd consider adding more.

  • Setting up a small business network using mac and windows pcs

Setting up a small business network using mac and windows??

Ok that sounds great. What is your actual question as it relates to AirPort networking? Is it: Can I set up a wired/wireless network with an AirPort base station that support multiple Mac & PC clients? If so the answer is yes.
If, instead, it is how to I configure an AirPort network to support a small business you will have to provide more details on both your networking & computing equipment in order for any of us to help you.
