Belkin wireless router connected but browser could not find the host server

my new roommate has a belkin n wireless router connected to a cable modem which functions perfectly on her pc laptop. i am trying to connect my MacBook Pro to the router using her WEP password. this all works fine and my System Preferences/Network/Status shows that AirPort is connected with full strength, but i cannot load any web pages (i have not yet been able to load any pages at all using this router). the page load error reads "Firefox can't find the server at www.cnn.com" and "The browser could not find the host server for the provided address".
I spoke with Belkin support and they say the router is functioning properly, that is a problem with my mac.
When I go to Network Diagnostics, the status shows all green and says "This computer's Internet connection appears to be operating normally. Are you sure you want to use Network Diagnostics?
Could this be a firewall issue? A couple people have suggested that, but I'm not sure how to fix that.
I have tried rebooting the router and cable modem, rebooting the mac, etc.
any ideas on what settings i may need to investigate??
thank you!

how do I know if the router has useful DNS servers? i am looking at the settings of the router on the pc that is online.
Somewhere in the settings of the router should be the DNS servers that it is using. Since the router is offering via DHCP to do DNS translation for your Mac, it must have useful DNS servers listed.
There are "public" DNS servers. I have no experience with it, but this Web page describes one from Google:
http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/
Supposedly Google has a DNS server at IP addresses 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 that you might try. Since the DNS server setting on your Mac is grayed out, as a test you might try noting the setting in the "TCP/IP" tab of your AirPort connection item of the Network panel of System Preferences. Then switch from "Using DHCP" to "Manually", fill in the values you just noted, switch to the DNS tab and fill in Google's DNS addresses, and see if things work better.
do you have any other suggestions of where to seek help???
Perhaps a Belkin discussion group?

  • [SOLVED] mutt error "Could not find the host"

    I have been trying to set up Mutt, following the Mutt wiki page. Every time I run 'mutt' at the command line, the application opens but I get the following error message at the bottom of the window:
    Could not find the host "imap.qmul.ac.uk"
    I've tried various .muttrc variations, but no luck so far. Here is my current .muttrc file (with my username changed to 'user' but no other changes):
    set imap_user = user
    set folder = "imaps://[email protected]:993/"
    set spoolfile = +INBOX
    mailboxes +INBOX
    unset imap_passive
    (Eventually I will add smtp information, but it seems premature at this stage. I also tried putting my password in there, but it did not make a difference.)
    It may be relevant that I also cannot telnet into the imap server in question (or get in there with 'ssh'). I set up telnet using the telnet wiki page.
    The IMAP server itself seems to be working well: I can log in there and read and send emails just fine when I use a GUI-based email client.
    Any ideas, anyone, on what's going wrong?

    Just in case anyone stops by and is interested in the networking question, let me add, in partial answer to skanky's questions, that I can indeed ping the server:
    $ ping imap.qmul.ac.uk
    PING imap.qmul.ac.uk (138.37.6.143) 56(84) bytes of data.
    And the telnet error message I get is as follows:
    $ telnet imap.qmul.ac.uk
    Trying 138.37.6.143...
    telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection timed out
    But I've just noticed that if I include a port the telnetting works fine:
    $ telnet imap.qmul.ac.uk 993
    Trying 138.37.6.143...
    Connected to imap.qmul.ac.uk.
    Escape character is '^]'.
    I don't know why that should be, since a port number is optional in the telnet documentation I've consulted, both on my system (via 'man') and elsewhere.
    And if I include a port number in my .muttrc folder setting but keep the server name instead of the IP address...
    set imap_user = user
    # set folder = "imaps://[email protected]:993/"
    set folder = "imaps://[email protected]:993/"
    set spoolfile = +INBOX
    mailboxes +INBOX
    unset imap_passive
    ... it STILL doesn't work:
    Could not find the host "imap.qmul.ac.uk"
    Finally the GUI application that I mentioned was a webmail service. I just go to a web page and type in my username and password, so I don't know about its settings offhand. I can try to find them out if this issue is of interest to any networking expert who wanders by.
    There are deep mysteries here, but I am content for the moment that I have mutt up and running.

  • Hi! i just bought the iPad mini 3 today with a case that supports the automatic sleep/wake lid action but i could not find the setting for the sleep/wake lid action in my settings.

    the cover i bought is from the brand called iPearl and it supports the auto sleep/wake lid action but i cant find the settings for it in my settings>general. now my iPad wont sleep when i close the lid. how do i find the option for this action in my settings on my ipad?

    The setting should only appear with the cover installed. Try settings> general> IPad cover lock/unlock> on. Thanks go to Diavonex and Chris CA from this earlier thread.
    The sleep/wake function would not show in general to turn it on. I have a Targus case but the function will not work. What's going on?

    I have downloaded all I-work programmes but couldn´t get the reg. key, now, after I ´ve turned my computer on, I cannot print pages document due to the missing key. What do I do to avoid this?

    Where did you download the iWork apps from?
    If it is from the Mac App Store, there is no registration key necessary.
    If you originally had a demo version of iWork, then you need to completely delete all files from that before installing the M.A.S. version.

  • Error Msg: "internet connect" "could not find a pppoe server"

    Hi,
    I'm a mac newbie and am having problems with my new MacBook that I just bought and setup yesterday. When the setup asst is asking questions when I first started the computer, I mistakenly chose connect via pppoe. Then, when the setup asst ended, I realized my mistake (b/c I am using a dsl connection that I plug in through my ethernet port), went into system preferences--network-- and chose ethernet, using DHCP. Now I am able to connect to the internet and get my mail, but I keep getting a pop-up window called "Internet Connect" that says "Could not find a PPPOE server". Can someone tell me what I need to change? Thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions:
    In Network Preferences, where you setup the DHCP, click configure again and select Create PPPoE service, and remove/undo whatever you entered in those dialog boxes. Then re-select DHCP.
    Leave the default name, PPPoE but just remove everything else.
    If there are any check boxes to connect via PPPoE, be sure they are unchecked.
    If that does not help, then in your user library/preferences directory, drag the following file to the desktop and reboot
    com.apple.internetconnect.plist
    That should take care of it.

  • I am constantly receiving an error message that says "Could not find a PPPoE Server." My wireless internet connection seems to working fine, I'm not having any issues. How do I get rid of this error message?

    A few weeks ago my computer had lost the connection to the wireless internet. I set it up again and was able to connect to the internet, however since then I've been receiving an error message "Could not find a PPPoE Server." I went back into Preferences and unchecked the PPPoE server option but the error message still pops up.
    Any idea how to fix it?

    In the Network pane of System Prefences, do you have duplicate services on the left column? When you "set it up again", you might have duplicated a service and both (the good working one and the previous that lost connection) might be trying to connect at the same time.

  • Internet Connect Could not find a PPPoE server

    We just bought the new MacBook Pro and set it all up ok and yesterday bought a D-Link Wireless ADSL router.
    We can get onto the D-Link network fine and full signal is shown but when we try to connect the error "Internet Connect: Could not find a PPPoE server" comes up.
    Does anyone know what the problem is?
    I looked at a couple of other threads with similar tpics but none of them seemed to help me :S
    Do I just need to contact BT about it as they are our server or is it something setup wrongly?
    I hope you can help me

    ok, thanks
    I've done that but it still doesn't work
    whats VPN? and do I have to fill in that first(ie. Server address, not that i know what it would be, Account name and Password)? and PTTP or L2TP?

    I subscribed golf digest, but I could not download the magazine. Ipad reads“cannot update library anerror has occurred.

    Thanks for the quick response. No, I did not get any error messages or any terms-of-usage screen. The employee I told my problem to was not computer savvy either. She just suggested I move to different spots w/in the library to see if that would make a difference. It didn't. When I connected to the library WiFi it did change the Verizon 3G that is usually in the upper left corner to iPad with two to three emanating arcs. I may have to go to the library in the next town. I was able to connect to theirs in the past when I had to download something greater than 20 MB. Unless I really want it, I will probably not even try to download something more than 20 MB due to the hassle. Yeah, I may have been better off getting a normal desktop or laptop and getting WiFi at home. To do that now would mean having my iPad 2 and a desktop computer, which I feel is extravagant. (I know there are a lot of big spenders out there who got the iPad as additional gadget for fun. This is a rich country.) A Verizon rep told me I couldn't set up a WiFi router at home just using an iPad. So it seems like a person who just uses 3G is limited to surfing the net (not even much YouTube because it eats a lot of data) and using email. I read about an app that helps print wirelessly using 3G, but a reviewer said you had to be an engineer to get it done right. BTW, I like the Steelers. I'm old enough to remember Franco Harris and that blond guy whose name escapes me back in the '70s. Since I live in North Jersey I feel I have to support the Giants. But I know football about as well as computers.

  • Network Connection - could not find a PPPoE server

    This question is different from other similar ones I've read.
      I have a Windows box that I use every day, connected to DSL by ethernet to a D-Link modem/router. I frequently connect/disconnect my MacBook Pro 10.6.8 and, until recently, all was well. It would be online as soon as it booted up. Now, while my Windows machine still gets online fine, MacBook says my ethernet is connected, but I can't get online. My DHCP is fine, but when I click the connect button for PPPoE, I get the message "Network Connection - could not find a PPPoE server". I didn't look but I'm assuming it was using both DHCP and PPPoE when it was working properly.
      Took it to the shop and as soon as they plugged it in, it was online, with both the DHCP and PPPoE working.
      My ISP says it must be a driver issue for PPPoE, something to do with the configuration. So 2 shops say they can only fix it by coming to my home, instead of me taking it in to them. Are they correct, or how can I fix it myself, bearing in mind that I'm fairly new with this?

    Hi Grant,
    Got a different person at my ISP today, she says I have a dynamic IP address, so both my computers only need DHCP. We walked through my Windows machine network screen and it is definitely set up with just DHCP (just like the Mac). But she couldn't tell me why Windows was working and Mac wasn't. Which makes me wonder why the Apple shop told me to click on connect PPPoE!
    She said when I took my Mac to the shop and both DHCP and PPPoE were showing as active, only the DHCP was needed and actually doing anything. And she couldn't tell me why I couldn't just take my Mac plus the router into the shop and get it set up there.
    My UN and PW were 'admin', and I changed them long ago. Your instructions were identical to the router manual, but she couldn't tell me how to change them back to my chosen names if I followed those instructions. She also said a new router might fix the problem.
    Everybody seems to have different ideas (in addition to the 2 sales pitches), and I'll admit that I'm concerned that if I re-set the router it might mess up Windows so it doesn't work either. So I'm frozen!

  • FF not connecting to web- This "Network Connections" message pops up: Error 623: The system could not find the phone book entry for this connection. Any ideas?

    About a month ago I could no longer connect to the internet on our PC. Every time I clicked on the Firefox icon the Netscape sign-on window would pop up. I would try to close it but it would pop up over and over again. If I tried to close it a dozen or so times eventually Firefox would open up but it would never connect. Just today I moved my Netscape file to the recycle bin. No longer does the Netscape sign-on window pop up but following Network Connection error message pops up: "Error 623: The system could not find the phone book entry for this connection".. This error window behaves the same way the Netscape sign-on window used to behave. Every time I click to close it it pops open again. After numerous clicks Firefox opens up but it never connects.

    Do you have this error message on a Mac computer or on a Windows computer?
    I've only seen this error mentioned on a Windows computer.

    Saw this solution on another post about an iPad in a school enviroment. Might work on your iPad so you won't lose everything.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    ‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
    Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
    I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
    Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
    1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
    2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
    3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
    4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
    5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
    6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
    7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
    8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just cancelling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
    If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Try it and good luck. You have nothing more to lose if it doesn't work for you.
     Cheers, Tom

  • VS 2013 Community Edition lost its license: SP324098: Your browser could not complete the operation.

    I have installed Visual Studio 2013 Community Edition on a brand new Windows 7 machine and registered with a new Microsoft account. This was for testing purpose to see how well the new Community Edition would work in comparison to the Professional Edition.
    At first, everything looked good.
    Didn't use it in a while now, and just came back to see that it's complaining about a license. What a warm welcome. It gave me a link to "renew" the license and I clicked it. It opened that pre-login window, then came back and said this:
    SP324098: Your browser could not complete the operation.
    That's all. Every single time I retry. What does it even mean? I don't want my browser (IE11 by the way) to do anything, I just want that license to use my free Visual Studio edition. Is it not free after all, was it just a trial that has now expired? I
    mean, why should I get a 1500$ application for free... That just doesn't sound real.
    Anyway, can somebody tell me what went wrong and whether/how it can be fixed?

    Okay, something's badly broken here in my region. I took an older VM with Windows 8.1 and an installed VS 2013 (from MSDN, with licence), uninstalled VS 2013, installed all Windows updates, and then installed the VS 2015 CTP 5. It has installed fine, but
    at the first start, it says:
    Sorry, we ran into a problem.
    SP324098: Your browser could not complete the operation.
    At least I can ignore the problem and continue in this case. After starting, under "Register product", it first said "licence expires in 14 days" and I was logged in with my primary account. Must have been from the previous installation.
    The error code appeared here as well. After logging out and registering again, it seems to work. And my default browser here is Chrome and I never took special care about IE. In VS 2013 CE, however, I don't even get the login form.
    So this is an entirely different machine, it has never seen a community edition of Visual Studio nor the separate account I used for it. Yet it failed with the very same error message. What the heck does that error code even mean and what is the real cause
    of it?? Can you please tell me the truth about it? I don't want to chase symptoms or try every guess somebody might have (retry, restart, reinstall) – that leads us nowhere. This error appears for a reason, I hope, and somebody must be able to find that out.
    (If not, I'm really wondering what Microsoft engineers do and whether they know their product.)
    If this doesn't improve, I honestly and urgently suggest you drop this broken licensing implementation and replace it by what there was before (i.e. product key or nothing at all) or use another proven technology. This thing just isn't stable or reliable
    and will cause trouble.

    You should restore your modem to router condition and set the Airport Express to 'Bridge Mode'. A full explanation and the method of doing this is here:
