•Best External Drive Encryption Software????

Hi,
I need to find a good external firewire drive encryption software, any recommendations? I have gigs of legal files that must be encrypted but with a VERY stable program.
Thanks,

Disk Utility makes AES-256 images which can be put on external hard drives. Of course the power of encryption also depends on the quality of your password. If you use anything that might be found in any language in the password, that won't work. Mixing numbers and letters without vowels is the best way to construct passwords. Mixing cases helps too.

  • HP Drive Encryption Software (Winmagic)

Hi, I'm having a problem with the HP Drive Encryption Software. I had to reinstall my operating system, but I forgot the decrypt my hard drive before the reinstall. My HDD was split into 3 partitions, 1 was for the OS and the other 2 for data storage. Currently, after the reinstall, I can see the one with the OS, as it was formated during the reinstall, but as for the other 2, they are not available. Windows recognized those partitions as not formatted and when I click on them the OS says that before using the partition it needs to be formated. I was hoping that by installing the Drive Encryption Software it will be easy to recover those partitions, but apparently it wasn't. I have my old spare key stored on a external USB device, but when I was trying to recover following the guidelines I found in the Help section of the HP Client Security app (via the login screen after a restart) I run into an error. 0xa1 I believe. Is there any way to recover those partitions? I wouldnt want to format them and loose all my data. Pls advise. Thank you

  • Best external drive and format?

What's the best external drive for backing up
imovie files and disc images? What format should the drive
be set up in for Mac usage and to accept the imovie projects?

If you simply talk about the spec and functionalities, caldigit's VR should have better spec over others
Interesting unit and something I will keep an eye on over the next year. Thanks for the links
I am primarily a LaCie d2 triple interface user (3-year old 320 Gb, 2-year old 500 GB, 1-year old 1 TB, and 1-month old 2 TB drives currently in use). For the most part I have been well satisfied with these drives even after having a power supply on the 1 TB model "weaken" on me to the point where the unit no longer worked in the "auto" mode. Since LaCie support provided a correct diagnosis of the problem within one work day, I was able to confirm the problem immediately, and they had a new replacement power supply in my hands in about 3 days, I have naught but high praise for their support people and remain a satisfied customer.
As I will probably need to replace the 2 TB drive in Oct or Nov of '09 as my iTunes/TV storage drive, I was looking at the LaCie 4 TB multi-drive unit but must admit I prefer the look of the CalDigit 3 TB unit. However, I am not sure I am willing to spend that much extra for the CalDigit's smaller configuration. Still, only time will tell and it is much too soon to make an preliminary, let alone, final decision.

  • Drive encryption software

We have a Windows server 2008 r2 domain and running 500 windows 7 machines. We are looking into a new drive encryption software. We currently use Novell ZenWorks Full Disk Encryption. We have had several issues with this IE blue screens when installing

I would like to know of some other reputable options for disk encryption. It need to be centrally managed and 256 bit encryption.

  • Whats the best external drive setup for FCP and accompanying software?

With all the external Hard Drives out there I am hoping that other users could suggest the best options when setting up FCP to work with an external drive. I am working with both SD and HD and am planning to use DVD Studio, Soundtrack Pro along with Motion and AE.
With all the info out there claiming to be the 'best' it gets a little confusing. I bought a 2T WD HD with Firewire 400, 800 and eSATA connections. With the amount of footage I have to capture this wont last long. And the intention is to archive this footage and making it easy to access in a year or two.
Which is best type of connection? Firewire 800 or eSata? Any Suggestions as to a really good external hard drive set up that I can add to as finances allow?

Not quite sure what this question has to do with Qmaster, but what the heck.
The simple response is get the fastest and biggest external you can. If you are getting a drive mechanism without swappable disks, purchase 2 mechanisms - 1 for use when editing and the second for backing up. Purchase a 3rd drive to back up your system drive.
If you go the swapable drive bay route, you'll pay more for the mechanism but you'll recoup the cost as you can purchase additional bare drives for a fraction of the cost of another whole mechanism.
The fastest connection speed is esata then FW800 then FW400. USB is not appropriate to editing video (but can be used for simple backups).
If you have the resources, something like a Caldigit HDOne is a high performer. If that's out of your range, look into their VR line or something from MacBurley. Granite Digitial also makes good basic devices.
    Have fun.

  • Best external drive?

I wondered why my Mini was running slower and slower. Apparently it had to do with my external drive expiring. It was a 200 GB LaCie at least 5 years old. So now I need to replace it (probably with a bigger one).
What's the current favorites? I'm alarmed by how many reviews mention drives going dead within a year. Is quality less than what it was?
Should I get a backup drive for my backup drive? Have a cloud backup as a secondary backup? Or just exhibit more self-discipline in making DVD backups of important files?

You can never have too many backups.
    Basic Backup
Get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    Silver Keeper
    Retrospect
    Super Flexible File Synchronizer
    SuperDuper!
    Synchronize Pro! X
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
Although you can buy a complete external drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined.  It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.)  You can purchase hard drives separately.  This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice.  Reliable brands include Seagate, Samsung, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu.  You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
    Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available.  You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports.  I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets especially for Firewire drives (911, 921, 922, for example.)  You can find enclosures at places such as;
    Cool Drives
    OWC
    WiebeTech
    Firewire Direct
    California Drives
    NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover.  Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.

  • External drive encryption lockout

    Hi,
I am running time machine on an encrypted external drive.  Usually I have to log into the drive with a password upon connecting it.  The problem I experienced is that drive locked me out and would freeze upon entering my password.  I tried repairing drive with disk utility to no avail, the problem occured for about 24 hours.  I read numerous forum entries about this problem where there seemed to be no definitive answer. A lot of ppl had given up and reformatted there drives.
When I tired diskutil cs list the drive I was getting,

  • Cannot mount any firewire/USB external drive after software update 10.5.4

After the last software update on 10.5.4 it did not complete the installation, and get stuck at the last step of running installation script for hours. So I have to restart the computer, and it restarted fine. Then I use Disk Utility to check my hard disk, and discovered some file system inconsistency error, so I repaired it (in target disk mode by another Mac). After it is repaired, the file system passed with no error.
But ever since then, I cannot mount any external firewire drive or USB drive. I cannot use Time Machine to backup my disk. I think my firewire and USB ports are fine because I can restart my iMac in target mode and connect to my MacBook via firewire, so the hardwire ports are functional, except that it seems 10.5.4 cannot detect or mount any external drive after the failed software update.
Does anyone encounter similar problem? How can I fix it? I have my disk backed up by TimeMachine but I cannot restore it if it won't let me mount my TimeMachine disk. Is there any other way other than completely reinstall 10.5 from scratch?

first, you should try reinstalling 10.5.4. download the [combo update|http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx1054com boupdate.html] and run it. If that doesn't fix the issue, you can use full system restore from TM to go back to a time before the troubles started. to do that boot from the leopard install dvd, once past the language screen go to the Utilities menu at the top and choose "restore from backup".

  • How can I retrieve the password hint of an external drive encrypted with FileVault 2?

    Hi,
I'm running on 10.7.3, I have an external HDD that is fully encrypted with FileVault 2.  When encrypting an external drive, FileVault 2 doesn't provide a recovery key, but it gives you the opportunity to give a hint at the time you enter the password.  My question is: how can I get this hint?
I'm asking because I can't mount the drive anymore.  I keep getting prompted to enter the password, and although I believe I'm sure what the password is, it keeps getting refused.  The weird thing is that I have never been asked this password because the drive has always been automatically mounted after reboots, I guess because the password was in my Keychain.  I have no idea why it no longer auto-mounts and none of the passwords I tried worked.
In Disk Utility, when I tried to "verify" the locked volume, Disk Utility logs an error in system.log with no other user visible action.  I filed a bug with Apple about this (#11286871) but I'm still waiting to hear back from them.  The error logged is:

Even if you succeed with the difficult instructions to do this, if you are running Mavericks (10.9.x) on your Mac, count on it to start over with a whole new backup of your Mac, so you will have two separate backup files for the Mac on the Time Capsule.
Realistically, few of us ever need to go back months or years to retrieve a file from Time Machine. My recommendation would be to keep the external hard drive around for a few months until you have a good backup history established for the Mac....and then delete the backups from the drive and use it as a spare hard drive.

  • What is the best external drive for Macbook Pro?

Migration Assistant is not moving files from my Macbook OS X 10.5.8 to My new Macbook Pro just purchased. Apple Support suggested I transfer thru an external drive. They suggested a 1 TB. They said it would be sufficient for migration and afterward for back up and storage of media and pics. What would be the best one for this purpose?
    Thank You

Go to OWC and purchase a drive and an enclosure. Put it together yourself. Takes about five minutes and a screwdriver. Or you can purchase one already complete from them if you prefer.

  • Best external drive to use to clone MacBook Pro

About a month ago my 2011 Macbook Pro hard disk crashed.  Luckily, I was able to restore everything from backup stored on my Time Capsule using Time Machine.  Moving forward, in addition to using Time Machine, I would like to clone my Macbook Pro to an external drive using Carbon Copy Cloner.  Could someone please advise exactly what kind of external drive I should get?  My Macbook Pro's internal drive is a Seagate 500GB SATA laptop drive.  I'm running Mavericks OS X 10.9.4.  Thank you in advance for your help!

You really don't need Seagate's software to use the external drive with your Mac.
Open Disk Utility in your Applications > Utility Folder and depending on what you want to use the Seagate for..... simply re-format it.
    For example:
If you want to use it for Time Machine, erase it and format it Mac OS Extended.
If you want to use it to share photo's, music and doc files between PC's and your Mac, erase it and format it MS-DOS FAT-32.
If you want to make a bootable clone using Disk Utility, CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper, erase it, set the Partition Scheme to GUID Partition and the format to Mac OS Extended.
Cautioning that, formatting will erase all the data on the drive.
So if you have been using it with a PC and it is formatted NTFS, then your Mac can only read the data on the drive..

  • Best external drive setup?

I guess I can't be called 'new' to Macs, I've had the mini since May of 2005, but I would like to know what you would recommend in terms of external drive setup.
As I began to fill the 80 gb internal, I added a FW 250gb external. It's not full (about 90gb free and 20 gb free internal), but I have virtually all my video and photographs on the external...and it makes me nervous.
So, I saw a Lacie 320gb for under $100 and decided to get it. Originally I thought, even though it is USB 2 only, that I could set it up as a bootable drive, like I could w/ the FW drive...but I don't think I can do that.
Now, I wonder if it is best to leave it as MS-DOS, or should I format this as Mac OS extended? what are the benefits?
Should I move everything from the FW to the USB? and then reformat the FW?
    thanks
ultimately, my goal is to use one external as the location for my working files, and the other as a backup...is there a better way?

    Thanks Gordon,
In terms of speed, I still feel the FW drive will be slightly faster than the USB 2 drive, so I plan to use that drive for the work drive and the 320 to backup to.
My internal is an 80gb...and I have only 19-21 free at any given time. Over 25 gb is in my photos and another 10 in Music. I think now that I have the 2 externals, I can use those for photos only and clear the internal.
The dilemna is my internal drive is silent...both externals are noticeable when spun up...so I let them sleep after when not in use.
I have SilverKeeper from LaCie for backup...so I'll use that for now.
    thanks again.

  • Best External Drive for MacPro and iMovie

In using iMovie, I find my existing main drives filling up, and need to get a fast external drive which works well with the Mac Pro and the snow leopard operating system. I note that there is a new usb 3.0 standard, but my understanding is that it does not work with os10.6 without additional third party hardware. Any suggestions on best mass storage (external) for iMovie which is fast enough so that the video is not negatively impacted when preparing a movie?
