Best path to Lync 2013

I've been running Lync 2010 Standard with a single edge server and a single front-end server. Recently I lost two of the four drives in my edge server simultaneously, and - of course - there is no backup. I've already got a virtual server started for Lync
2013 front-end. My current question is whether I need to rebuild the Lync 2010 Edge server, or just build a Lync 2013 edge server instead and not worry about the 2010 edge server loss. I wasn't sure if the 2010 edge server was required for the migration to
2013.
It seems that I should be able to get my topology built on the Lync 2013 front-end server, then use that topology to import into the 2013 edge server, and, finally, move my users to the 2013 front-end environment. Any guidance would be appreciated before
I begin the work. Thank you.
David

If it was just the edge, then don't worry about the loss and don't rebuild it. Deploy a new 2013 edge and move forward. If you see the 2010 edge in the topology builder just remove it from there and there's nothing left to do if everything is associated
with the 2013 replacement.

It will be better to Use Hardware Load balancing (F5).
If you choose to use DNS load balancing for a pool but still need to implement hardware load balancers for traffic such as HTTP traffic, the administration of the hardware load balancers is greatly simplified. For example, configuring the hardware load balancer
will be simpler as it will only manage the HTTP and HTTPS traffic, while all other protocols will be managed by DNS load balancing

  • Office 2013 w/SP1 OCT - Lync 2013

    Hi,
We are trying to deploy Office 2013 w/SP1 from the ISO image -35821 using OCT. We have created a new CUSTOM.MSP file everything is installed as expected in the MSP file EXCEPT Lync 2013.
In any way we are able to install it. If we run the setup manually, Lync 2013 is installed, but using the OCT we never had a chance to install it correctly. Even using the ID config.xml, Lync don't want to install.
Any thoughts /comments?Thanks and best regards
    Lionel

Had the exact same issue.  Seems OCT is boned with both the Office 2013 SP1 and Lync 2013 SP1 ISO's.
Only way I could get the Lync 2013 SP1 working for deployment was to NOT use a custom.MSP, but rather just the config.xml.
Below are the only options I had in my config.xml and it seemed to deploy ok via sccm.
    <Configuration Product="Lync">
    <Display Level="none" CompletionNotice="no" SuppressModal="yes" AcceptEula="yes" />
    <Logging Type="verbose" Path="%temp%" Template="LyncSetupVerbose(*).log" />
    <Setting Id="SETUP_REBOOT" Value="Never" />
    </Configuration>
Otherwise, your other option is to deploy the 2013 without SP1 with your custom.msp and update thereafter.

  • Lync 2013 crashes when double-clicking on contact to send IM...

I have a 64 bit Windows 7 machine. I have Office 2010 and 2013 installed. I am able to successfully run Lync 2013 and login to the Lync Server and see my contacts and their statuses online.  However, every time I double-click on a contact name to send
them an IM i get a message saying "Microsoft Lync has stopped working" and Lync shuts down and restarts. When I debug the error using Visual Studio 2010 I get an "Unhandled exception... Access violation" error.
Here is what I know so far... It has to do with some incompatibility with Office 2010, because when I uninstall Office 2010, Lync 2013 starts working properly.  (However, I need Office 2010 installed for supporting my clients. <sigh>)
Here's is what I've done so far...
    1. Uninstalled Office 2013 = Lync 2013 still crashes.
    2. Uninstalled Office 2010 = Lync 2013 works fine now.
    3. Reinstalled Office 2013 w/out Office 2010 present = Lync 2013 works fine.
    4. Reinstalled Office 2010 followed by Office 2013 = Lync 2013 still crashes.
    5. I've also delete the sip_ folder to have Lync recreate it = that doesn't work either.
I have also updated Lync 2013 to the latest version update provided by Microsoft, but nothing seems to help.

    Hi bihtime3,
I understand the inconvenience caused by this issue. I would like to confirm if you have tried the following scenarios.
    1. Repairing Office 2013 after installing Office 2010.
    2. Installing Office 2010 before installing Office 2013.

  • Lync 2013 Display photos do no display correctly internally

Hey guys, really need some help with this one so I will provide as much detail as possible (sorry for the lengthy post):
We have Lync 2013, Exchange 2010 and AD is at a 2003 functional level.
We are experiencing issues where Lync photos are not updating correctly in the internal clients. I have checked the pre-reqs; Replicate this attribute to the Global Catalog
is set for the ThumbnailPhoto attribute. We are also forcing photos from AD only (or no photo) by setting the following:
    "Set-CsClientPolicy -Identity PhotosControl -DisplayPhoto PhotosFromADOnly"
and finally we are setting the photo in ad using this PS command:
"Import-RecipientDataProperty -Identity "Test User" -Picture -FileData ([Byte[]]$(Get-Content -Path "C:\pictures\testuser.jpg" -Encoding Byte -ReadCount 0))"
The pictures being uploaded are under 10KB in size. The initial upload of a photo for a user (IE: a new user that doesn't already have a photo) will generally be displayed in both Outlook and Lync within 24 hours. When we try to update a photo for a user who
already has a photo it updates within Outlook but never updates on Lync clients. I have also manually tried running the "Update-CsAddressBook" command from Lync and waiting 24hours + but the photo will not update in Lync client. Another interesting
thing I've found, anyone who set up their Lync in last month or two do not see their OWN photo within Lync (it just shows the default gray/white man) both in the main window and the chat although others can see it.
I was able to find that on our Lync file store, the cached contacts/photos are being updated daily (as expected) and actually contain the correct photos. I confirmed this be using abserver.exe on the .lsabs file and then locating the contactID for a few users
I know are not updating properly. Once I have their contact ID I simply look for their .photo file in the cached files, copy it out to a different location and change it to a .jpeg. To my surprise the photos are actually the correctly updated ones, so why
are these no getting to the users/clients? I have gone through and deleted my local cache folder as well as the registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Lync but unfortunately no change on my Client.
Another piece of the puzzle; We just implemented a Reverse Proxy to handle mobility with Lync. During my testing I did get Lync client for android running and low and behold the pictures are actually correct on my mobile device!!
We are planning to upgrade Exchange from 2010 to 2013 and I hoping that leveraging the Hi-Def photo capabilities for Lync 2013 with Exchange 2013 may fix this issue but I would rather try to get it resolved then hope for the best.
    More info on the environment:
4 main sites + remote users
    ~7DC's - 2003 DFL (1 at each site + a few at HQ)
3 Lync Front end servers (2013) (All located at central HQ)
2 Lync edge server (2013) (All located at central HQ)
1 - 2010 Exchange server (Located at central HQ)

About 100 HP 4110 Lync Edition Desk phones
Users's workstations are either Windows 7 Enterprise or Windows 8.1
    Enterprise

Can you see the pictures being cached in \users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Lync\[email protected]\Photo ?  You can see me poking around in a pic here for reference:
    http://www.skypeadmin.com/2014/12/23/missing-pictures-lync-skype/
If you rename to jpg you should see if they're new or old.
I'd like to see if you switch a few users to websearchonly for ABS info, if it would make a difference:

  • Users are unable to see their own profile photo although everyone else can see it in Lync 2013 client

We have Lync 2013, Exchange 2010 and several AD
    servers in mixed mode 2003/2008.
All user are unable to see their own profile photo
either in the main Lync window, in the settings or in a chat although other user can see that their photo is there and displaying. The user experiencing the issue can go open Outlook 2013 client and will see their photo displaying correctly in the file menu
    (and elsewhere) here.
I have confirmed this happens with any new users I set up as well. We have gone through a fair amount of troubleshooting with other Lync photo issues and simple fixes such as deleting the SIP cache folder etc proves to be ineffective.
Our Cs-ClientPolicy Global is set to websearchonly.
We have "Replicate this attribute to the Global Catalog" set
for the ThumbnailPhoto attribute in AD.
We are also forcing photos from AD only (or no photo) by setting the following:
    "Set-CsClientPolicy -Identity PhotosControl -DisplayPhoto
    PhotosFromADOnly"
and finally we are importing the photo in ad using this PS command:
    "Import-RecipientDataProperty -Identity "Test User"
-Picture -FileData ([Byte[]]$(Get-Content -Path "C:\pictures\testuser.jpg" -Encoding Byte -ReadCount 0))"
The pictures being uploaded are under 10KB in size.
I have followed many threads and will provide any information I can to help find the problem. Thank you in advance.
EDIT: I have also tried the following but with no success: https://knowledge.zomers.eu/misc/Pages/How-to-fix-your-photo-not-showing-up-in-the-Lync-client.aspx

    Hi Jdentremont,
Lync client gets user photos by first querying the Address Book Web Query (ABWQ) service on the server, which is exposed through the Distribution List Expansion web service. The client receives
the image file and then copies it to the user's cache to avoid downloading the image each time it needs to be displayed. The attribute values returned from the query are also stored in the cached Address Book Service entry for the user. The Address Book Service
deletes all cached images every 24 hours, which means that it can take up to 24 hours for new user images to be updated in the cache on the server.
To troubleshoot your problem, please follow the steps below:
    1.  Navigate to
     “X:\share\1-WebServices-1\ABfiles\000000000\000000000” folder. (ABS file share)
You should see some photo files in this folder as the following screenshot.
    2. Delete all the files in this folder.
    3. On test PC, delete local cache files.
    %userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Lync\[email protected]
    4. Sign-in Lync with the test account.
    5. Go back to the ABS file share, check if there is any Photo file in the folder.
    Best regards,
    Eric

  • Lync 2013 - re-connecting is un-muting microphone, is that a bug or a feature?

Every time Lync 2013 re-connects (very often sadly) the microphone is un-muted.
Is that a bug or a feature?
I'm using a Plantronics Voyager UC headset (Lync certified), doesn't know if it happens with others too.
Please advise if there's a solution, I have to disconnect from Lync every time I'm in a conf call using another software like Cisco Webex.
Quite annoying and very embarassing sometimes...
    Thanks

    Hi,
When Lync change the status of Mute/Un-Mute, it change the Audio value with the following path: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\MMDevices\Audio
Please check if Cisco Webex also use the same parameter for Mute\Un-Mute. If the two use the same parameter, it can cause the issue.
Also, if the re-connection issue only happen to you, please try to update Lync to the latest version and then test again.
If the re-connection issue happen for multiple users, please check the Lync Server performance and network situation as well.

    Hi,
Did the issue happen only for one user or for multiple users?
If the issue happen only for one user, you can try to login on other well-worked computer with the issued Lync account to test the issue. You can also try to use another well-worked Lync account to login on the issued computer to test the issue.
If the issue happen for all Lync users, please also check if Lync Server 2013 update to the latest version.

  • Lync 2013 & Windows 8.1: All contacts appearing as "Presence Unknown"

Having an intermittent problem with Lync 2013 running in Windows 8.1.  When I first sign-in to Lync (I'm working on an laptop that is part of my organizations domain and I'm logged in before I start Lync) all my contacts show up and for about
1 second or less, I can see that their presence is displayed correctly (Available, Busy, Away, In a meeting, On a call, etc.).  Then all of the sudden all contacts switch to "Presence Unknown".  My own presence is showing as "Available".
If I try to message a contact, it just shows the spinning dots and then eventually fails.  One time the message went through, the recipient said they got the message twice, and for a brief moment - maybe bout a minute - the presence status
for all the contacts was once again available and showing.  But then once again changed back to "Presence Unknown".  Most of the time if it shows "Presence Unknown" I'm unable to IM the contact.
Sometimes - if I wait long enough - the presence status eventually appears and I'm able to communicate with contacts.  But that can take up to an hour or more.
Sometimes after waiting for a bit, I get signed-off automatically.  This morning that happened and I got a pop-up message "Server unreachable."  If I click on sign-in again, it was able to sign-in and my status was once again
"Available" but all contacts were showing as "Presence Unknown"
Sometimes if I sign-out/in, that fixes things but that works less frequently.  Usually the same situation just repeats where initially everything looks correct - everyone's presence is accurate - then immediately changes to "Presence Unknown"
    and nobody is reachable.
Rebooting doesn't seem to work all the time but sometimes.
If I connect with Lync2010, none of these issues happen.
Is this a problem with Lync2013?  A problem with Windows 8.1? A system setup issue within my organization?

    Hi,
Did the issue happen only for you or for multiple users?
If the issue happen only for you, please try to login to another Windows 8.1 computer and login Lync 2013 with your account to test if the issue cause by your computer. You can also login with other well-worked Lync 2013 client on your computer
    to test the issue again.
On your computer, please delete user profile with the following path and then test the issue again:
    %UserProfile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Lync

  • Exchange 2013, Lync 2013, PKI,

    Hi,
I would like to implement this 2-tier PKI, but for Windows Server 2012 R2 & Windows 8.1 ENT.

How do I setup this infrastructure with all info information provided.
How to make Exchange 2013 and Lync 2013 live as one on this network.
    How to pass mxtoolbox.com  spf-test, smtp-test, reverse-dns-test  and spam-test.
How to make Exchange 2013 send all emails immediately, and not put it in draft when you click send.
How to make exchange 2013 & Lync 2013 certificate from the PKI setup VALID.
How to make external user access there mailbox using outlook 2013.
How to make external user access there lync account using lync client & outlook 2013.
How to fix "Move to DRAF, when click on send" ?

    Hi Fbifido,
From your description, I would like to clarify the following things:
    1. Exchange 2013 is not supported to run on Windows Server 2012 R2.
    2. For Windows-based users, computers, and services, trust in a CA is established when there's a copy of the root certificate in the trusted root certificate store and the certificate contains a valid certification path. For the certificate to be valid,
the certificate must not have been revoked and the validity period must not have expired.
What's more, here is a helpful article for your reference.
    Digital Certificates and SSL

Besides, in order to avoid confusion and keep track of troubleshooting steps, we usually troubleshoot one issue per thread.
    Hope it helps.

  • Presence unknown Lync 2013

    Hi,
We need to change the sip address of a user. we use Lync 2013
in holland you can choose your lastname of your partner when married.
This will result in a Active directory name change and also the email and sip address will change.
for the email i use a second smtp address.
Example [email protected] after marriage it will be [email protected]
If the sip address is changed we have an presence unknown issue.
    How can i solve this?
    Thanks Guido

    Hi,
If you want to update address book on Lync Servers, you can run
Update-CsAddressBook to trigger the Lync SERver to synchronize current AD information in the SQL database into the downloadable client and device address book files.
The on Lync client computer, delete user profile with the following path:
    %UserProfile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Lync
    Then test the issue again.

  • Lync 2013 name display

We are running Lync 2013 and Exchange 2010 all patched and up to date.
Everyday, we have few users that when typed in chat windows, their name turns into a phone number and the text below their name turns into hex decimals.
    Any ideas?
I do see event 4073, LSBackup Service warnings "Microsoft Lync Server 2013, Backup Service user store backup module detected items having pool ownership conflict during import.
and event 32054, LS Storage Service,
    UnsupportedStoreException: code=ErrorIncorrectExchangeServerVersion, reason=GetUserSettings failed......
Autodiscover WebProxy=<NULL> ---> Microsoft.Exchange.WebServices.Data.ServiceRequestException: The request failed. The remote server returned an error: (401) Unauthorized. --->
System.Net.WebException: The remote server returned an error: (401) Unauthorized.   at System.Net.HttpWebRequest.GetResponse()
Our Exchange Cert looks fine, DNS entries looks okay too!
    Running Get-CsUserPoolInfo,
    1) if i use [email protected] <<failes
    2) if i use [email protected] <works
In AD, I see both being used.

    Hi,
You can try to do the following path to solve the issue:
Run the command Export-CsUserData for both the Primary and Backup pools
Take SQL backup of RtcXds database for both the Primary and Backup pools
Run PoolConflictCorrector tool, which lists all conflicts. Without making any changes it fixes or deletes the conflicts for each user
Run VerifyUserDataReplication.exe from the ResKit and check if you still see any conflicts.
Check if you could see 4073 warning events in the event logs or not.
