Best way to natively tag photos on OS X

For years, I've been simply taking the native image stored on my iphone and placing them in a chronologic folder (Year > Month > Event)...that was it. No tagging, no renaming photos, no nothing. Then, I was dinking around in Windows 7 and saw how awesome the tagging seemingly was. Simply stated, I don't do ANY photo editing at all. All I'm interested in is tagging photos based on the topics in them (work, dog, house, christmas, etc) so that while I can store the native images as I am now but be able to search my photos based on those topics in them. My biggest thing is to have this be a native function if possible as I don't want to get started and find that in 2 years, I can no longer use it because the third party crapped out on me.
Does anyone have any suggestions or know of the best way to do this?

Trouble is, Spotlight comments are restricted to Macs (they use .ds_store files) and the Windows commenting system you mention in your first post is restricted to Windows. Neither actually "natively tags" the file in an environment-neutral way.
However, EXIF data is actually embedded in image files. You can edit a file's EXIF data from within iPhoto if you want. I do understand what you mean about longevity, but I would honestly prefer to use something like iPhoto's tagging features, which are much more flexible, and make it really easy to tag and smart-group pictures into sets. You don't have to use any of iPhoto's editing features - it does very well on organization alone. If you absolutely don't want to touch your existing folder structure, get Aperture instead, which allows you to keep the organization you've done.

When you export the videos out of iPhoto be sure to select Kind = Original. Otherwise you'll just get an image file of the first frame of the video.

Just a note: if you Option-drag the thumbnail to the Desktop you'll get the original file. Regular dragging will get you the preview version or the edited version if it's been edited in Photos.

I would like to know what the best way to edit out photo’s from a scan that has multiple photo’s?
It seems like I must make a duplicate of the scan, in the amount of photos, on that one scan and then crop each “duplication”.
Is there some other way that is better?

If you're using Canon's Canoscan Toolbox application to scan the photos try deleting its preference file, com.canon.CanoScan Toolbox 5.0.plist, and try again.
In the CanoScan window make sure Select Source is Platen, Scan mode is Color (Mulit-scan) as seen in the screenshot below. That will crop and save each photo to its own file.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

Get an external HD and use either Time Machine or create a bootable clone using either SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner. To really have an effective backup plan you really should have redundant backups meaning it would be wise to get 2 separate EHD's, one for TM and the other for the clone. The reason you want 2 separate physical drives is HD's fail and if you suffer a HD failure you will lose ALL of the backup. Having 2 separate drives reduces risk, having no backup well that can be just plain disastrous!

I use an app called FileApp to transfer photos to my PC - I can then selectively delete photos from my iPhone and still have them on my PC - just download the app to your iPhone and follow the instructions for the accompanying program for your PC - then use your iPhone cable to connect - iTunes will also start up so just close it and you will see the iPhone storage as a drive - go the DCIM folder and open the device folder and you will see your photos.

Best way to deal with photos from the start? (Bridge CS5 and iPhoto)

I'm just learning the ropes of the whole CS5 suite, and was starting to add keywords etc. in Bridge when I realized I couldn't access the files in my iPhoto ('09) library. I've read a few threads about this issue, but haven't really found a consensus on how to deal with it.
I figure I'm in a good position to get things right from the start since I have no tags or ratings etc. in my iPhoto setup (and have only added keywords to the few pics that weren't in my iPhoto Library), and am wondering what you think is the best way to sort photos given I plan on using them in web design etc., and all the parts of my CS5 suite.
If getting the photos out of iPhoto is best what's the best way to do that? I've read suggestions to right click on the library and click on "Show Contents"- or something like that, but that does not come up as an option when I right click my iPhoto Library in Bridge. Thanks so much for your help!
Please let me know if there is any info I could give you that would be helpful in order to figure this one out.

I must be far too lazy to be sure. In iPhoto if I want to move an image all I
do is click and drag from iPhoto to the desktop.
Here comes the trouble with using iPhoto and mixing applications. You have
to be sure what you do in iPhoto because you easily grab the wrong version
instead of the original.
As Tai Lao pointed out the the difference between Bridge and iPhoto in short
is open visible structure for Bridge and hidden invisible library for
iPhoto.
There may be perfect and valid reason to use iPhoto but mixing the two
workflows without thinking or knowing what you do is bound to get you sooner
or later in trouble with wrong versions of the file.
And clicking and dragging from iPhoto is easy to mistake in those versions.
1 - I used to create incredible folder/sub-folder arrangements depending upon
operating system file management to find files.
You can create whatever structure you want including a thought through
naming convention that suites your needs, if you keep doing this in Bridge
you can easily open and close folders using the folder panel, in iPhoto you
have a lot of events and albums but none as clear as in Bridge. (at least
that is my opinion...)
Also I would prefer to use a good naming convention with less folders and
subfolders instead of bad file naming and many well named folders. Also
using the metadata options description and keywords let's you easily find
the files you want but when having the need to retrieve the original from an
external disk or DVD using less folders will be quicker to find.
Since depending upon metadata keywords or star ratings I now prefer to have
all images (originals and amended) in one single folder as Bridge (or iPhoto
for that matter) can only see the images in the folder it is looking at.
Wrong, using the find option (cmd+F) you can specify Bridge to look in main
folders or entire disk, include the option to look in subfolders and you are
in business (but the first time Bridge caches it also need to index all the
metadata, that takes some time but only the first time.
2 - potential feature request for Bridge?
To have an option where Bridge can see and display images in subfolder
arrangements from the folder it is looking at.
That is already there since a view versions
Select a folder with subfolders and then from the menu view select 'show
items for subfolders'
It is still not a perfect way of functioning but it gets better every new
version, in CS5 the speed of gathering the files is very much improved.
However here is iPhoto the winner because it keeps the files in cache (or
something like that) Bridge is not the best in this behavior but it is
possible to use.
This is a bit like a restriction of OS X "All images" to all images in the
selected folder and all subfolders of the selected folder (if that makes any
sense at all)
Many users have tons of files on there system, why would you use that option
to view all if you are perfectly capable of finding the files or file types
you want in most applications (but you can also find them in OSX, you want
psd files do a search for ".psd" and you will see all the psd files on your
system.
3 - iPhoto can't really handle large files. With one event consisting of
4,500+ images weighing in at 884 MB it is zippy. Were those to be originals
at a high resolution iPhoto would probably be tediously slow and require a
folder/sub-folder arrangement which, to me, seems to undermine the importance
of managing stuff using keywords.
IPhoto is not designed to be a professional application, therefore you can't
expect behavior for this
In Bridge you have no limit of files on your system only the limit for the
cache is somewhere around 500.000 I believe. But even Bridge is not really
designed for handling that amount of files in a pleasant way.
I also don't know of an application that can do so for normal retail prices,
most users of that amount of files have custom made or customized
application that costs many thousands dollars. Bridge is in fact a free gift
when buying a Suite application from Adobe.
The file size for viewing in Bridge is by default set to a max of 1 GB but
that is for building previews you can see thumbs and small previews of
bigger files. In the Bridge preferences you can set the limit for this to
whatever you want, it only grows the cache file for previews when using many
large files.
In summary: Bridge is great for CS5 partnering on metadata, original images or
large filesizes.

You can do all of this using Bridge to start own created actions or with
scripts like image processor.
Do some research on Adobe TV or view other video tutorials on the web, there
are many free and good tutorials. You will learn that you can do all you
want in Bridge (and a lot more...)

I want to create a photo gallery in Dreamweaver without using any pre-built "web gallery" function. What's the best way to swap the images when I click the "next" button? Do I create a new Dreamweaver page for each photograph? Is there a more efficient way to do it than that?

Best way to manage media (photos/music/videos) across user accounts in Lion?

Yesterday I clean installed Lion. I copied only that what I need from my TimeMachine backup. The apps were reinstalled as well. Now, I've set up iPhoto to link to my library in the Users>shared folder so that its available across all user accounts shared with my family members. Same is the case with iTunes library. But with integration with iCloud and @me.com or @mac.com accounts, I'm not sure how each one of us can have out own accounts configured in these libraries while they are shared. Keeping this in mind, what is the best way to share music, videos and photos across user accounts and yet have the apps... iTunes, iPhoto, etc, know our individual settings in out respective user accounts?
For iTunes should I just create a referenced library? Will that let me sync my photos and videos to my iPhone 4? If so, how?
For iPhoto I guess i''ll have to create separate libraries for each user account and then have one common for our shared photos. But thats just plain complicated for users who aren't tech savvy in my family.
Please advice before I create a mess with my media again!

Thanks for the idea, but that strategy introduces problems of its own. Now I have two iPods (a 5G and a touch) that sync with one library and an iPhone that syncs with another. This makes my life workable on the road, but at home, it means I have to change iTunes libraries when I sync different devices. It also means that, when I download new content, if I want to take it with me on my MBP, I have to synchronize it between two libraries. That sounds like an ugly situation.

hello i have an old 24" imac that is loaded down with iphoto pictures and itunes music. i recently got the new 27" imac and wish to only transfer the photos and music files to the new computer. i have a cloned hard drive of my old imac as well as a time capsule copy of it.
i don't want to just restore my entire old hard drive onto my new imac because there is a lot of junk on there i don't want on there. so, what is the easiest way to move just these two types of files? i don't know how to find these files and move them?
i know how to attach both imacs via firewire, i just don't know what is the best way to make the transfer of both these file types?

note: itunes and iphoto should not be running when you do this.

What is the best way to present your favorite photos for a group presentation?? I use iPhoto library. I also have Aperture downloaded on my iMac. Not too familiar with Aperture. It is for a milestone birthday.

I think it's easiest to work from iPhoto. When I had to do a similar presentation for a birthday bash, I loaded the picts from my camera and some from my computer into iPhoto on a relative's MacBook Pro avalable at the site. It did not take a lot of time or trouble.
iPhoto allows fairly easy options for presenting the slide show , including various transitions and putting a sound track underneath.
Regardless of whether the presentation was or wasn't less elegant than what some more expensive software could do, the attendees loved what we did for that bash.
Never used Aperture so I don't know what it can do. You could ask in the Aperature forums here:

My AirBook is nearly full... of mostly photos, so I need to back them up -- but what's the best way? I have a 2TB external drive, but I'd like to keep my photos in the same format as they appear on iPhoto (that is, in folders, with event names, date created, etc.). The first time I attempted to export my photos (about 10,000) they all came in with ONLY numeric file names. UGH, that will make it impossible to find anything. ANY POINTERS, TIPS, OR BEST PRACTICES?

Why don't you simply make a duplicate of your iPhoto Library? Select the library file. CTRL- or RIGHT-click and select Duplicate from the context menu. Copy them to separate disk drives, then delete both from your startup drive.
