Bing is taking over Firefox - auto starts on start, or grabs the home page if I start it - how do I stop this? Go to Safari?
Every few months, Bing takes control of Firefox:
When I start the computer, Bing autostarts FF and then makes itself the home page.
If I quickly close FF - I am really upset about this Bing thing and will never use it, so I shut down the autostart FF - and then open FF myself, Bing will open as the home page.
When I check options Gmail is set as the home page. When I check bookmarks, there is nothing for Bing.
This is a pretty egregious MS malware program.
How do I stop this, and keep it from re-occurring? Note that I've already tried the resetting of FF, which means I must reinstall all extensions. That works but only for a few weeks. The Bing malware is back. How do I get rid of this, once and for all? Or could Mozilla have a legal chat with MS, since they are "grabbing" your software in the worst malware fashion.
I use an ASUS F502c. It came with Windows 8; I've upgraded that to 8.1
Thanks,
DMS
Hello,
You can check for malware and/ or reset Firefox to solve this issue:
You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:
* [http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/default.aspx Microsoft Safety Scanner]
* [http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/ MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware]
* [http://support.kaspersky.com/faq/?qid=208283363 TDSSKiller - AntiRootkit Utility]
* [http://www.surfright.nl/en/hitmanpro/ Hitman Pro]
* [http://www.eset.com/us/online-scanner/ ESET Online Scanner]
[http://windows.microsoft.com/MSE Microsoft Security Essentials] is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.
Further information can be found in the [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware]] article.
The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information. <br>
'''Note''': ''This will cause you to lose any Extensions and some Preferences.''
*Open websites will not be saved in Firefox versions lower than 25.
To Reset Firefox do the following:
#Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
#Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
#Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
#Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.
Further information can be found in the [[Reset Firefox – easily fix most problems]] article.

I usually close firefox through the windows taskmanager with the "end process" command because it always becomes unresponsive sooner or later (i think due to website scripts that stop responding).
Anyway when i open it afterwards i have to wait like 1-2 min while it loads and loads and loads (150-250 MB ram) all the sites that were opened in the previous session. I do NOT want this i want to disable this horrible feature but currently that is not an option. Or is it ? How can I disable it?
I want my firefox to start up quickly without loading previous sessions no matter how it was closed.im asking how to disable that not how to enable it ... in my "when firefox starts:" box ive chosen "show my home page" but it still loads stuff from last time because i've closed the program by ending the process in taskman. ... which i explained in the question but w/e thanks anyway

Try here:

Also try:
- Resetting the iPod. nothing will be lost.
Reset iPod touch: Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Restoring the iPod from backup
- Restoring the iPod to factory defaults/new iPod. -

First check your login items under your user account and make sure that they are not selected to load. Then make sure that when you restart or shutdown that you don't have the "reopen windows..." checkbox ticked.

You can check the target line in the Firefox desktop shortcut (right-click: Properties) to make sure that nothing is appended after the path to the Firefox program.

I have my homepage set to Google, but after I have closed the browser and come back to open it up another time, it goes tot he previous page I was on. I have checked all my settings and it shows that I have it set up properly, but it refuses to work.
Google may have put in a program that overrides what you want.
It could be the work of one of your add-ons, or even add / mal-ware.
Open your '''Add-ons Manager <Control><Shift > A''' and make sure you
know what each one is and what it does.
Some added toolbar and anti-virus add-ons are known to cause
Firefox issues. '''Disable All of them.'''
Also, check the programs that are on your computer
'''Windows:''' Start > Control Panel > Uninstall Programs.
'''Mac:''' Open the "Applications" folder.
'''Linux:''' Check your user manual.
Go thru the list. If you find something that you don't
know what it is, use a web search.

Having problems with updating Firefox. It keeps on saying can not connect try again later.
Hello BassoonPlayer,
Since you are using one of the the school's Macbooks, it is quite possible that the time and date are not properly set on the computer that you are using. FaceTime will not work if you do not have the proper time zone set up for the location that you are in. This past week, there were a two other Macbook users I've helped by simply telling them to set the Date/Time properly. By the way, you described your problem very well, which makes it easier for us to help you. Hope this solves your problem -- if not, post back and I can suggest other remedies.

For example, I type in South Caronlina Contractors license in google. I see the SCCL website. It is the official website. I click on it and instead of getting the state site, I get redirected to an advertisement. 10 minutes later I go through the same process and get the site I want. It happens with a number of sites not just one I mentioned.
www.google-anaylitics.com is a company that tracks people on the net for statistical data. It puts a tracking cookie on your system so it can follow you around and see where you go, etc.
I have an add-on called "ghostery" that detects these tracking cookies and blocks them. You would not believe how many there are on the internet. Even this page sets a "Web Trends" cookie. According to Ghostery "Web Trends" has been found on over 10,000 sites.
So, try installing it and see if it solves the problem. You may also want to get the add-on "LSO". It takes care of macromedia's tracking cookies
You'll find both of them in the FF add-ons.

For the past month, every time I open Firefox, the Mozilla Start Page (with Google in the middle) takes over my home page setting (NY Times). How can I stop this from happening?
To the extent that I could, I tried the above, despite the lack of clarity at times. For example, how do the uninitiated find "sessionstore.js" and "sessionstore.bak" and the Firefox profile folder? Assuming that I eventually find them, what in the world does "check for problems" mean?
There are many of us out here with limited to moderate computer sophistication, and more detailed suggestions would be much appreciated. I am in the moderate to high category, but much of your response was marginally useful, to be kind. Not to say that I don't appreciate what you have written.
