Bios/HDD error

I am working with a HP ENVY dv7-7254er Notebook PC with Windows 8 with 2 HDD disks.  Recently I faced a problem which prevents me from starting Windows: Black screen at the system start (F1,F2,F9,F10 working as intented, F11 gives no response). When I'm trying to run F2 diagnostics of hard disk I see this:
SMART check: Passed
Short DST: Failed
Failure ID: Q0E07G-69V7AL-QFPPKOK-60W903
Long DST: Failed
Failure ID: Q0E07G-69V7AL-QFPKOK-61EH03
Even tho I have 2 disks I can check only one.
After few manipulations I made a loading USB flash-drive with win8,  to try system recovery, but when i try to recover the system it says:
Disk with Windows in locked, unlock it and try again (Bios checked - Security mode - disabled)
Automatic recovery gives no result, saying: Recovery tool was unable to recover computer.
Well (f*** that), after all of this, I was trying to install win8 on my other HDD, but when I try to do it from USB flash-drive It  seems like my computer hasn't any HDDs even tho my bios sees both of them
1.  Anyone know what these failure codes mean?  Is my hard drive DOA?
2.  Any suggestions for recovery?  I think the notebook is out of warantee.
3.  How to recover my system or at least make it operating?
Thanks!

DST: failed means  the hard drive has failed and will need to be replaced. If you are still in warranty HP will send a replacement. If not a retail laptop SATA hard drive can be used. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original 1TB hdd  in order to use Recovery Media.

  • Satellite U200-181 Built-in HDD ERROR

I've bought "Toshiba Satellite U200-181" 2 weeks ago. Recently (2-3 days ago) Ive got problem with built-in HDD.
So the problem is that sometimes I'm getting the message "Built-in HDD ERROR" during Notebook startup. This message "Built-in HDD ERROR" appears from time to time and system stops booting from HDD, but can boot from other bootable devices. First time when message "Built-in HDD ERROR" occurred, it was accompanied by lot of strange clapper pop noise from inside of the Notebook. All other
"Built-in HDD ERROR" messages were accompanied with not so loud and strange clapper pop noise, but still with some pop sounds (not as loud as at first time).
To identify possible problems I saved S.M.A.R.T. data log (see appendix#1).
Additional information: After I've purchased the Notebook Ive made successful BIOS upgrade from version 1.40 to version 1.50 strictly according Toshiba official web-site instructions. After BIOS upgrade system worked well, no ERRORS, no faults. But 3days ago I got "Built-in HDD ERROR" message.
    Any ideas? Thank you.

I recommend you to contact Toshiba service partner in your country as soon as possible. The unit is new one and something like this should not happen. Explain them the situation and you will see what they can do about it.
You can also contact your local dealer and try to exchange the unit to new one.

  • Tecra S4 -125 shows built-in HDD error

I've bought Toshiba Tecra S4 -125 and Ive got problem with built-in HDD.
New SATA HDD does not work.
The message "Built-in HDD ERROR" appears from time to time and system stops booting from HDD and boot is very, very slow.
In BIOS settings HDD is not detected.
    What is wrong there?
    Thank you...

    Hi
Maybe dust is blocking the cooling ventilator and so your notebook shuts down immediately
So in your case I would clean the notebook using compressed air spray. This could blow out the dust from the cooling ventilators and therefore its not necessary to disassemble the notebook. Check this!!!
Which display driver you are using? I can only recommend the Toshiba drivers because they are pretested.

It looks like your hdd isn't recognized by bios. The possible reasons:
1 Hdd is dead (should be replaced)
2 the controller on the motherboard is dead (the whole mobo should be replaced)
    3. In bios, lan boot set is the 1st boot device(Go to the Bios F2 on startup and check in Boot priority option)

  • "Built in HDD error" in Portege R200

    Hello,
My Portege R200 shows 'built-in HDD error" in boot time. In the BIOS screen, it says "no drive" in HDD.
What do I do? I checked the connection and the drive is plugged in fine. I didn't hear any noise while booting.
Is this HDD problem? or perhaps motherboard? Help!!

    Does the HDD spin up?
Try resetting the BIOS to default settings.
Other than that, I think there is not much you can do, except for sending the laptop to a service center for repair.

  • BIOS application error 501

Imaged an EliteBook 8440w with Windows 7 x64 Enterprise. When shutting down from the Start button in Windows, the system shuts down, then goes into a reboot. It then comes up with the "HP BIOS Application Error (501)." I have seen posts about the EFI partition, etc etc but nothing on how to fix the problem from re-occurring. Thanks.

Hi Entering the BIOS Setup menu
Entering the BIOS Setup menu requires pressing a specific key at a specific time. If you fail to enter the Setup menu on your first try, repeat the following steps until you are successful:
Close all applications that are currently running and restart the computer by clicking Start , Shut Down , Restart the Computer , and then OK .
When the red Compaq logo or blue HP logo screen appears, press the F10 key on the keyboard to enter the Setup menu.Reloading the default settings
Complete the following steps to reload the factory installed BIOS Setup settings:
In the BIOS Setup utility, select the Exit tab.
    Select Load Setup Defaults .
Select Save Changes and Exit (pressing F5 and the Enter key will also load the Setup Defaults).
Press Esc and then Enter to exit Setup.   This is a feature.
You are using info-button to start and have no efi-partition (HP_Tools) installed.

    What should I do?

    Which version of Windows?
Are you booting from the CD and installing Windows and where does it stop. Blue screen where it says there are no drives to install to?
Also what settings do you hav in Bios>>Integrated Peripherals>>On-Chip IDE Config.
    If using XP should be:

    SATA Only
    Keep PATA active-Yes
    Both Channels
    Configure as Raid-No
    Leave rest at default

If that error is displayed as a result of a hard disk test in either the BIOS or the HP Support Assistant, it means that your hard disk is going to fail. There is no fix for this.
I suggest purchasing a new hard drive. Have you created an HP Recovery disc set or usb recovery media?
Save all of your data to an external hard drive.

  • SATA HDD Errors

    Motherboard:     K8MM3-V / MS-7181 V2.0  AMD Socket 754
    SATA Controller: Via VT8237R PLUS
    BIOS Version:     W7181VMS V3.0 012006
Are there any known problems with SATA HDDs giving occasional errors with this motherboard/SATA controller, or with any other MSI motherboards?
Have there been any BIOS updates concerned with the type of problem described below?
(Note. The problems of VT8237R support for SATA 3.0Gb/s (‘SATA II’) are well documented. To rule out the higher speed capability as a cause my SATA drives are configured to 1.5Gb/s – see below.)
    Problem Description
I have four of these MSI motherboards. Recently one system running Windows XP suffered a file system corruption in an NTFS partition on a Samsung SATA HDD. I am investigating why this happened.
    My tests
    Test 1
A Samsung Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB SATA drive fails the standalone Samsung ESTOOL surface diagnostic with Service Code AJ36 ‘Bad Sector’.  (Note. This drive has been set to SATA 1.5Gb/s using ESTOOL on another non-MSI motherboard with SATA 3.0Gb/s support).
However, this drive does pass the full surface ESTOOL diagnostic test when:
    - Using an IDE to SATA adapter with the drive on the K8MM3-V
    or
    - Running ESTOOL on the drive using another type of motherboard (ASRock)
    Test 2
Under Windows XP occasional disk errors, which are logged in the System Event Log, can be provoked by intensive HDD read/writes. My test case has three partitions with Acronis True Image backing up one partition to a backup file on another partition, and a chkdsk process running on a third partition.
    The logged errors are:
    Event Source: Disk
    Type: Error
    Event Id: 11
Description: The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk0\D
Note. This test fails on two different systems using K8MM3-V motherboards.
    Test 3
The same disk errors reported in Test 2 occur using a Western Digital Caviar Blue 320GB SATA 3.0Gb/s drive instead of the Samsung. (This drive was jumpered to SATA 1.5Gb/s).
    My conclusions
    - The Samsung HDD is not faulty
    - The problem is not confined to a single K8MM3-V motherboard
    - This problem has caused a serious loss of HDD data integrity
    Comment or advice is welcomed.

I submitted my problem report to MSI Online Customer Service on Nov 6th. They replied stating that the onboard SATA controller of the K8MM3-V / MS-7181 only supports SATA 1.5Gb/s and not SATA 3.0Gb/s.
I pointed out that my problem report clearly states that the Samsung Spinpoint and Western Digital Caviar SATA HDDs I am using for the tests are configured to 1.5Gb/s. There has been no further reply from MSI to date.
A further test (see below) has revealed no problem using a PCI SATA controller instead of the onboard SATA controller.
In my opinion errors reported by the Samsung ESTOOL diagnostic and the occasional Windows XP disk controller errors (Event Id 11) are symptomatic of either a ‘glitch’ in the motherboard’s hardware interface to the Via controller chip or a BIOS firmware error.
Because this motherboard is obsolete, MSI may be reluctant to investigate. However, the company should be concerned that the same design may have been carried over to subsequent motherboards and similarily has not been picked up in design review or product validation testing.
My experience certainly deters me from using MSI motherboards in future.
    Test 4
Tests have been repeated using the Samsung HD103SJ HDD with an unbranded Silicon Image 3114 4-port PCI SATA RAID Controller which supports SATA 1.5Gb/s.
No errors are detected in the Samsung ESTOOL diagnostic full surface test. (I was impressed that ESTOOL successfully detected the drive via the PCI controller).
No Windows XP disk errors were logged over several hours of intensive HDD disc read/write transactions.

  • Qosmio F20 - Built-In HDD error

My F29 took a hefty knock today around the HDD area on the forward right, while my kids were playing around. In hefty i mean that when it got knocked it unclipped the speaker panal near the sreen.
For a while it continued to work but about 10 mins later i got a blue screen with a load of text and then it just restarted.
During the boot up screen a error came up saying "Built-in HDD error".. Now i checked the connection and they seem solid enough. is there anything that i can do to get my system working again?
    Thanks in advance
    J

    Hello
You can check this yourself ;)
On the bottom side of the notebook you must only remove the HDD cover that is secured with one screw as far as I know. Remove the cover and then you can see what type of HDD it is.
Anyway, as far as I know the Qosmio F20 was equipped with IDE HDDs. That means due the 28bit LBA limitation you can use HDDs up to 128GB.
So I think a HDD with 120GB would be best solution.

  • Qosmio G15R - Built in HDD error

    Hello
I am getting an error message that says "built in hdd error" when booting up my laptop. The laptop has 2 HDD's. One 40GB and one 60GB.
I have tried both in the HDD1 slot and I am still getting the same message. I was able to use the recovery disc on the 60GB HDD and was able to start the laptop. It worked for a an hour then I got the same HDD message again. Everything is plugged in fine.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks.

    Hey,
    > I know that repair costs for these laptops are very exp.
Its just depending on the spare part that you need. If you need only a new HDD, it costs the same as for other notebooks I think. All notebooks using HDDs with SATA or IDE interface and thats all!
But parts as mainboard or display are more expensive. As far as I know they are the most expensive parts so sometimes its better to look on eBay or buy a new notebook. But its not unusual, the same is true of all other notebooks/manufactures.

  • K7N2 - Bios Checksum Error - But wont load program to flash bios

Hi there, my computer restarted itself due a problem with windows (kernel dll or something arather), since then it wont boot at all, beeps twice and says Bios Checksum error.
Now i understand this means the Bios is corrupted and i need to re-flash it. I looked at instructions on how to do this and followed them to the button. However, it wouldnt load a boot disk at all so i reset the Cmos using the jumpers.
After reseting it would now read the disk (i can hear it make noises) but it would only get as far as starting to load the award flash program, i.e. it just says "Starting..." but then the disk will stop reading at it will just hang then doing nothing.
I've tried numerous disks and numerous bios version numbers (but obviously the right ones for my motherboard: K7N2 Delta series Ms-6570), and i've tried using different types of bootdisk all with the same result.
Is there anything else i can do? or is it pretty much screwed and i have to take it back to the shop i bought it from and request a new bios chip (technically its still under warranty, as its only 10 months old but would this be covered with the warranty?). I can foresee taking it back being a huge hassle so if there is anything i can do to avoid this, it would be greatly appreciated.

I never cleared the cmos with the power on. Sorry i didnt make it clear, but yeah i always made sure the power was completely out. I left the battery out last night too, but still no change. All cables are on right, and I'll try taking out all the cdrom and cd when i get home. I cant get into Bios (pushing del key). all i get is two beeps and boot block telling me that there is a Bios Rom Checksum error (again, sorry i wasnt being very clear).
I think it might be pretty much stuffed. I'm tempted just to go to the store and buy another one as they aren't too expensive and probably not too much of a price difference from getting a new bios chip and having to wait for 2 weeks while it gets delivered. But then again maybe i should just be patient and save myself some money.
Hmm, could it be due to bad RAM? I'll try swapping it with my brother's and see what happens. It's kind of ridiculous that they give the same generic error message for a multitude of different problems, someone should fix that.
