Bizarre screen artifacts occurring

Strange issue I'm having with my 2007 Macbook. Running Snow Leopard 10.6.3. The screen begins to glitch out whenever the OS displays the shadows around window boxes and I get these bizarre artifacts.
I made a Picasa Gallery to show all the screenshots I took demonstrating the problem. What do you think? Please help this is a very strange thing that appears to happen almost randomly. Rebooting fixes it temporarily.

So far I have reset the PRAM, reset the System Management, verified the disk (it checked out ok), I also made a Guest account and the problem occurred using that as well. I noticed that it tends to happen when I'm using Flash or watching youtube, things of that nature. Hasn't happened when viewing Quicktime videos, that I can recall anyways.
Monitoring internal temps with iStat reveals my CPU is hovering around 107 degrees F. Not sure if that's useful but my initial thought was that this could be the result of something, possibly my GPU, overheating. This problem occurred a long time ago- perhaps a year or so but went away. I noticed it has come back now that the weather is warm. Is it possible the heat of the room is doing this? The room is quite hot during the day somewhere between 80 degrees. Not an expert at all so these are just random theories.

I have the same problem and have the feeling that it might be related to X11. For me it seems to only occur when I run Matlab (using X11). Just letting X11 run in the background does not seem to be sufficient to make the glitches occur.
In addition I found a description of these artifacts as far back as 2006 (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=485680&tstart=105). So maybe it's not an isolated 10.6.3 problem.

  • Bizarr screen artifacts! Anyone seen anything like it?

I,m getting really wierd screen artifacts when I have lots of windows and programs open. Red and blue boxes. The move around some. They cover the screen and are not window defined, ie the seem to be oblivious to windows. Seems to go away when I close some programs. They dont seem to be associated with particular program.

Since resetting (as mentioned in my post above) today the battery has had a new lease of life...not sure why, but there u go. I have been able to use it without hooking up to a power source for about 3 hours so far
I don't even know how to put my PC into "sleep" mode, so that wasn't the cause of my problem.
    thanks for your suggestions though.
For now, the problem is resolved....just like to know why resetting helps the ipod battery or its meter at least.

  • Possible solution for white C2D iMacs with screen artifacts or lines

I have a white 20" Core 2 Duo iMac with the famous screen artifacts issues. Screen tearing, horizontal lines, goofy pixels, you name it. From my research it seems there are countless others with these problems.
I tried running the SMC fan control app to boost fan speeds. This helped a little, but did not completely solve the issue. A lot of people think these issues are related to heat, and I agree, but only partially. When a graphics chip overheats it is eventually damaged. I have damaged my share of graphics chips while overclocking them in my PCs. In the case of my iMac and maybe plenty of others, I still have issues if the GPU is hot or cold.
I installed WinXP using bootcamp. I finally found an application which will change the clock speed of the GPU on the fly. The X1600 GPU in my iMac has a 475Mhz core speed and 500Mhz memory speed. I cut these down to 400Mhz on the core and 400Mhz on the memory. At these lower speeds I no longer have any issues with screen tearing, horizontal lines, or random crashing. I do still have a few wierd pixels here and there, but they are not all that noticeable and I can live with them.
Now for the fun part. I wanted to permanently fix these speeds into my GPU so when I boot back to Mac OS X, I don't have any issues, and I no longer have to boost fan speeds or run any additional apps. I spent most of today taking apart my iMac, putting DOS on a spare SATA hard drive, and running an external monitor while booting my iMac with the spare drive hanging out the side. All this so I can run ATIflash, and use it to dump an image of the GPU BIOS ROM file.
Well, I ended up finding out the ATI GPU has no ROM to flash. My best guess is open firmware or something like that passes this data on to the GPU when the system boots.
So, in my case slowing the GPU down significantly reduced my problems while running within windows. I am 100% confident slowing the GPU down will also improve issues within Mac OS X, but I have no way to pull this off.
If Apple reads this, or if anyone has any connections at Apple, can we please get an optional firmware update to reduce the speeds of the X1600 GPU? It won't fix all the iMacs with these issues, but it will fix quite a few, and for those out there who don't have any issues at all with their white C2D iMacs, lowering the GPU speeds will most likely prevent damage from inevitably occurring, keeping them a happy customer.
Now, some of you may not like the idea of a slower GPU, but if I have to pick between a slower GPU and an $800 logic board, I will take the slower GPU any day.

  • Illustrator screen artifacts

    Hi!
I've been having a problem with a screen artifacts on Adobe Illustrator CC.
whenever I select an object and try to drag it/scale it up or down, I get grey "squares" just covering my entire screen.
The squares disappear when I mouse over them (erasing them pixel by pixel..)
this problem only occurs in Illustrator (though I work on Photoshop and After Effects just as much).
I tried contacting Adobe, who remotely controlled my computer.
Sadly, the issue wasn't resolved since I've been told that it's not a bug, and maybe it has something to do with the graphic card and its preferences.
btw, this happens on 2 differant computers - my own, and my co-worker's...
i'm using INVIDIA GeForce GTX 770 card
Can anybody help us figuring out this thing..?

Have you tried the latest driver from Nvidia?

  • ATI 9800 Pro Mac SE - Screen Artifacts and Anomalies

    Hello All,
I was lucky enough to be given a new video card this Christmas (ATI 9800 Pro Mac Special Edition). Unfortunatly I am having some serious issues.
When I frst installed the card in my G5 all seemed well, both my displays appeared to be working properly and I did not notice any problems. The next day I decided to update the ROM on the card to the latest offered by ATI; after doing this I began to notice some horrible screen artifacts and tearing.
    Examples:
    http://static.flickr.com/39/77612780675feadba0o.jpg
    http://static.flickr.com/42/7761277964b07c6811o.jpg
As you can tell from the screenshots above this is not normal.
Here are some details of my Powermac:
    Dual 2.0G5 w/ 3.5 GB of RAM
    Running 10.4.3
    Displays:
23" Apple (plastic) Cinema Display connected via ADC
    17" Sony connected via DVI
    And the ATI card:
    Chipset Model: ATY,R350
    Type: Display
    Bus: AGP
    Slot: SLOT-1
    VRAM (Total): 256 MB
    Vendor: ATI (0x1002)
    Device ID: 0x4e48
    Revision ID: 0x0000
    ROM Revision: 113-A14402-126
I have attempted to downgrade the firmware on the card to the previous ROM offered by ATI; no luck.
I have taken the normal troubleshooting procedures:
    - Repair permissions
    - Clean caches
    - Repair Disk
    - Reseat video card
    - Install a fresh copy of Tiger on a seperate drive
    - Install different versions of ATI's software (currently using the most up to date)
    - Remove ATI's software
    - Boot into safemode
    - Run one display at a time (first ADC then DVI)
It seems ATI support is out till 12/30; does anyone have any advice?
    Thanks for all your help....
    -Chris

I purchased this card on ebay as a new, unused Apple factory unit, which doesn't require the molex power drop from the superdrive. I've got a 20" aluminum cinema display and a 17" clear CRT studio display connected. My main problem is that I get random app freezing (mostly Safari, sometimes Preview, and occasionally Mail). I can browse with Firefox all day and not have a problem. Console shows nothing unusual, either.
Symptoms: cursor present and movable, but unable to click on anything, Dock icons don't display their names upon rollover, perpetual beachball in frontmost app, high-pitched screech coming from machine somewhere (unless 'Napping' is turned off in CHUD processor pref pane, then normal).
Until this evening, I was under the impression that these were freezes that required a hard restart - I had waited several hours for the symptoms to clear to no avail. Tonight I decided to try something: I pressed the power button on the 20" display, and then pressed the 'S' key to sleep the system (even though I got no feedback on screen). I waited a few seconds and then left the room for a minute or two, and when I came back, the machine was sleeping. I woke it up and found horrible corruption, which corrected itself after another sleep cycle.
I was actually preparing for an archive & install to see if maybe different drivers would be installed that alleviate the issue, but wasn't too hopeful.
    Bizarre...
Now I'm not sure what to do. I haven't been able to use Safari for several weeks due to this. I had thought that since it only seems to happen with Apple apps, that maybe it was a core OS thing that 3rd party apps weren't affected by.

A few moths ago, the Superdrive stopped recognizing the disc because of a firmware update released by Apple!! It is not acceptable. Solution?
Apple should give a solution to all these people who spent more than 2500$ in a laptop that has stopped working in less than 3 years!

Yes, it appears the X1600 has more than its fair share of issues. I've seen reports of people reflowing the solder joints on/around the GPU with success, even baking the LB in the oven.
The rest is something you'll have to take up with Apple.

  • Screen artifacts - Hardware or software?

Hello all, my name is Larry and I'm having a problem with my VGA I hope the forum can help me diagnose. My PC hardware is listed in my sig, but the short form is that I've built a new PC with a 460GTX 1GD5/OC video card driving 2 Samsung 1920x1080 screens. Within 10 hours of building the new PC, I started to get this all the time:
    FAILURE 1:
I RMA'd the board and installed the new one. I don't get the first failure anymore, but now I intermittently get this:
    FAILURE 2:
Most often when I get this new failure, it will appear for a few seconds and then both screens will blank and the screens will reappear correctly. Occassionally, I have to reboot to clear the problem.
I'm not so sure the new failure is hardware. What does the forum think? Thanks in advance for any help you can give me. My new, uber-PC is not making me very happy!

software no way, only if OC by software/BIOS is involved.

  • Bizarre Screen Display After MacBook Pro LogOut

Like many on this forum, I've had LogOut issues with my MacBook Pro -- specifically, having the screen resolution drop after logging out of any account -- the only way to correct the problem being a reboot. Many posts have offered fixes from discarding corrupt plists to changing other system preference settings. My understanding is that the problem can be solved by upgrading to Lion, though many stated that the problem could be solved by upgrading to Snow Leopard 10.6.7, which did not work. I'm running 10.6.8 on a 17" Macbook Pro (mid-2010) and have still had this problem.
Compounding matters, yesterday, I downloaded and installed the latest Macbook Pro EFI Firmware Update 2.3; Security Update 2011-006; Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 6; Thunderbolt Software Update 1.0 and several native Mac App updates. I've repaired permissions and rebooted and now when I log out of any account, I get a bizarre screen -- not a reduction of resolution per se, but a reduction of the entire login screen... as if the image has been reduced by 25% or so... with a big blue border around two sides. See below:
    AFTER BOOT-UP:
    AFTER LOGOUT:
If upgrading to Lion would solve the problem, that would be great but I run several media-production apps and third-party hardware/software interfaces that are not quite onboard with Lion so I have to wait for a Lion Upgrade until my essential programs and hardware/software interfaces are completely Lion-friendly.
Surely there has got to be a way to get rid of this problem while still running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
    Anyone?

Your appointment at the genius Bar for an evaluation is free, in warranty or out.
They can explain why it wiggles, tell you whether that is normal or not, give advice about what you can do to reduce its annoyance, and fix it if it is not normal. That is what they are trained to do, all day every day.
There is no expectation that every time you visit they will find a way to make money off you, like a car dealership.
The Genius Bar service exists because Apple wants you to be a happy customer, if possible. If you are willing to make an appointement and come to them (spending your time and energy to do so) they will work with you for nothing in an attempt to solve your problems, whatever they may be.

  • Screen artifacts "electric snow"

Hello - ever since I upgraded to Mavericks I've been gettign screen artifacts, or as I call it, electric snow patterns on my screen.  They come and go, seemingly at random.  At first it was a minor annoyance, but now it is much worse. Plus, yesterday my iMac started rebooting randomly.
The snow looks like asterixes, like an old 8-bit program overlayed on my beautiful 27" screen.
    I appreciate any help.
    Best,
    Steve

This has been a common problem across the line with the new Nvidia cards, but I am very surprised to see it on the OPs Mac as it is older and therefore probably doesn't have the Nvidia chipset.
See this thread for the fury:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1924473
There are many others too, the snow is common. Hopefully they will fix it in a software update since basically every new Mac has the Nvidia chipsets in it.
P.S. I have not had it on my 17" MBP with either the 9400M or 9600M enabled, however, I have seen it on an older Mac Mini, so I think it has something to do with software.

  • Screen artifacts and hanging - attempting to revive my Powermac G5

    Hello all,
    Background
About a year ago my Powermac G5 2Ghz Dual Proc (2.5GB RAM) started having kernel panics once in a while, then random screen artifacts in the form of lines and dots started appearing all over, then it wouldn't go further than the Apple screen (artifacts included from that moment every time I tried to start the computer). I didn't take the time to resolve the issue then, and figured it would be a OS problem. Now I'd like to resolve my problem.
First, I turned the computer on without a system drive or install disc in in, to see if the lines would appear, which they did, plus a folder with a blinking question mark, which is supposed to in case there is no start-up drive. Here are two pics of the screen artifacts:
(My VGA adaptor has contact issues so the screen had a completely relaxing yellowish tint to it that doesn't bother me at all at no time during any of these processes).
    http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn56/juergenalbum/Powermac%20G5/IMG2505.jpg
    http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn56/juergenalbum/Powermac%20G5/IMG2510.jpg
Unfortunately, I can't locate my original install DVDs, so I borrowed copies for OS10.5 and 10.4 install DVDs from a friend (not originals). I'll keep looking for my originals tonight.
    Installation
Installing 10.5 didn't work, as the computer would show this when tried to boot with the dvd:
    http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn56/juergenalbum/Powermac%20G5/IMG2512.jpg
So I tried running the 10.4 dvd copy.
    Screen artifacts yet again:
    http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn56/juergenalbum/Powermac%20G5/IMG2507.jpg
    http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn56/juergenalbum/Powermac%20G5/IMG2506.jpg
From the DVD, I formatted the hard drive with Journaling Enabled. After it was done successfully installing 10.4, I rebooted. Upon rebooting, it only gets to the light blue screen after the grey apple screen before it hangs indefinitely.
I reset PRAM and NVRAM, clicked the SMU reset button, but no joy. I read through a bunch of threads related to problems associated with screen artifacts (where I found the PRAM/NVRAM/SMU reset solutions), but haven't stumbled on anything that might tell me what is going on.
It had 2x1GB and 2x256MB of RAM installed, I tried booting up with all 4 sticks, then only the 1GB sticks, then the 256MB sticks, with the same hanging at the light blue screen every time.

If I'm not mistaken, there's a Nvidia Geforce 5200 inside. Even though this model is a few years old, is my best bet to just get the same card again, would anyone have suggestions as to what to get?
The FX 5200 is a real minimal card in terms of performance.
Replacing it with a better card would make your computer more enjoyable.
do the screen artifacts establish that the cart is the culprit?
Every screen like that which I have seen has been caused by a bad graphics card.
As for replacement options, there are many:
    http://www.jcsenterprises.com/Japamacs_Page/Blog/4B4B7BA2-7ABB-47F1-87AC-B03D379 42BEE.html
I would recommend a Radeon 9800 series card or better, though even a Radeon 9600 would be much better than the Geforce.
The prices are comparable, so there isn't ant reason to limit yourself to the 5200.
Amazon or such won't have any Mac compatible cards available.
Most cards are available on eBay, and this is definitely the most economical.
There are some "retail" supplies, but the cards are mostly used or reconditioned, and the prices are twice (or more) that of eBay prices.
The following are ebay searches of cards being sold by those that offer worldwide shipping:
    Geforce 5200
    Radeon 9600
    Radeon 9800
    Geforce 6800

  • Screen artifacts when using powerpoint / graphics card issue

    Hello,
since the beginning we are having problems with our powerbook G4 and ibook when using powerpoint.
We have screen artifacts when selecting and deselecting any object. For a screenshot with explanations please see:
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/18582065@N00/265911667/
The problem was verified by the Apple store support team, who confirms the issue but cannot help.
The problem is persistent over all SW versions (Panther and Tiger).
We would be very happy about any useful idea or solution.
    Thanks,
    Chris

    Update:
The problem still exists with the Powerpoint/Office version 11.3.0 (released this week).

  • Screen artifacts while playing games with catalyst

Hello. I recently switched back to Arch Linux (64-bit) and I'm running with the catalyst-hook package from Vi0L0's inofficial repository. When I play games, or also when I'm using hardware acceleration in VLC, these artifacts appear on the screen. They disappear quickly if you update the screen, so they are not so prevalent on the actual gaming screen. They however flood my second screen. In case of VLC they are just constantly blinking all over the place. I've googled the issue, but couldn't find anything that helped. If I alt-tab out of the game all artifacts disappear, but then reapper later after I've continued playing for a few minutes. This is very annoying.
Is there anything that can fix this? Please help!
This is the Xorg0.log right after I played a game where the issues occured:

  • Retina screen artifacts

    Hi all,
Does anybody else have strange screen-tearing/artifacts on their 2014 rMBP?
For example, this on Tweetdeck is a regular occurance:
I've also had the Finder bar in osx have an all back background and black text until I moved to a different spaces screen and then back again.
Is this a hardware (graphics card) issue, or likely to be fixed in a software update?

Yes - I'm seeing something like this (mine looks a bit different - bits of windows all over the place, strange pixelation etc.), but only after my mid-2012 Retina (same specs as Olivier.c but 2012 model) has been asleep for a while. It's something others have been noting here for a while and I've yet to see a universal fix. It's not specific to Mavericks as it was happening in Snow Lion too: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4036736?start=0&tstart=0
I already have automatic graphics switching turned off in Energy Saver, so it's not because of some glitch when it switches the graphics.
I have recently reinstalled Mavericks, as I was experiencing very slow startups after the upgrade, and having an ongoing issue with the very jerky scrolling in Safari which had carried over from Snow Lion; the reinstall fixed both of those problems, but now I've got THIS problem.
Interestingly, I cannot take a screen shot of the issue - at least not using Command + Shift + 4 - as soon as I start dragging the cursor across the screen to take the shot, it clears up! I haven't tried Command + Shift + 3 for the whole screen yet. Also haven't tried opening and closing the lid; it's only happened about three times now and it's rather transitory and resistent to reproduction on demand, so it's hard to test.
