Bizarre "Utilities" Folder

No matter how many times I set the View Options for my "Utilities" folder, the settings are always forgotten when I restart.
The enclosing "Applications" folder always remembers it's view settings, as do all other folders. But, I continually set my "Utilities" folder View Options to "Always open in list view" as well as show the "Versions" column, and without fail THIS FOLDER ONLY loses all of it's View Options settings after I restart.
It seems especially strange since I always set the "Utilities" view options exactly the same as the enclosing "Applications" folder. Hmmmm?
Has anyone seen a similar issue in Leopard? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

I've not seen this, but it's possible the hidden file where OSX stores the display preferences for that folder has gotten corrupted.
Click here to download the +Tinker Tool+ app. It allows you to change the Finder to show hidden files (among many other things). Select the first option under Finder, then click +Relaunch Finder+ at the bottom. Reverse this when done.
Do not use any of the other options unless you know the possible consequences.
Use the Finder to display the Utilities folder. One of the first files listed should be named .DS_Store Delete it, close the folder, and try again.

I have a iMac, Yosemite 10.10 and my toshiba external hard drive is not being recognized, except when I eject it!. I have the preferences checked to show icons and have looked in the utilities folder..nothing. I have also changed ports. ??

    A few things to try:
1-Repair permissions and restart your computer.
    2-Zap the PRAM
3-Use Software Update/App Store to update your OS to OS 10.10.3.  Also, update everything SU/AS has to offer for your computer.  When done, repair permissions and restart your computer.

  • How do I get my utilities folder with calculator and compass on my ipad?

What happened to my utilities folder?

The Calculator and Compass apps are not included in the iPad version of iOS, only the iPhone. You'll need to find an app that meets your needs in the App Store.
    Best of luck.

  • Many apps are missing in the Utilities folder.

    Hi there!
The MacBook Pro I'm using is Mac OS X, Version 10.7.5. The weird thing is: when I bought it, I tranferred my files from a previous Macbook to this current one using Migration Assistant. But now I couldn't find Migration Assistant in this Pro, and there are many applicatioins missing in the Utilities folder (now there is only one folder named 'contents' contained in Utilities).
Could anyone tell me if it is normal or how can I fix it?
    Many thanks!!

    1)  In your first post you said you have an MBP with Mac OS X 10.7.5, that goes by the name of Lion.  Apple uses big cat names for its OS X versions.  Mountain Lion is Mac OS X 10.8.  Your MBP has Lion since you said you have 10.7.5.
    2)  If you reinstall Lion, and DO NOT do an erase and install, all applications and data, including photos and libraries, should be preserved.  It is always a good idea to make a backup first just as protection.  I have never had files damaged from installing or reinstalling the Mac OS X, but others have discussed that on here.  However, if all is working well you do not need to resort to a Mac OS X reinstall - this is to clean up problems noted below.
    3)  By mangled files I simply meant a built in file that seems to be damaged or not functioning correctly.  When you said that MA could not be opened due to a problem, that sounded like a damaged file.  Could be another reason, but it is not uncommon for system-level files to get corrupted over time, especially when the computer is not shutdown properly or power outages/surges occur, or for other reasons.  If there seems to be damage to system-level files the only way to clean things up is by reinstalling the operating system.
Reinstalling is usually very straight forward, but if everything is working fine it isn't necessary.  You might as a first step try doing a restart on the MBP which will stop services that may be having problems, often does some minor house cleaning, etc.  Try that first and see if all works well and see if MA will then start for you.
And by the way, when you said problems starting MA, there is a sequence for using MA, were you following that when you had the problem, or did you just try and start it from the MBP?

  • Missing some Utilities in Utilities folder

I misplaced some data; at any rate Im missing most utilities in my utilities folder including disk utility. (I know there is a copy on my install disk.) How can I do just an install of my missing utilites? Im running 10.5.2; is it safe to simply install the combo update to get back my utilities?
    thanks

insert apple install DVD, start Pacifist and choose "Open Apple Install disks"
it will import the disk (that will take some time). after it's finished importing, type "Utilities" in the search bar. Select the Utilities folder in the search results, expand it, choose the apps you want to install and click "extract to.." in the toolbar.

  • Utilities folder disappeared

    Hi all,
I was having weird trouble w/ my iBook. Worked real slow. Online stuff seemed impossible to accomplish. I decided to run Onyx for repair. I did but that had no effect. Then I decided to run the Disk Utility that comes w/ the computer. Well much to my surprise I couldn't find the Utilities folder. I did several types of searches. No joy! The folder just wasn't there. So I restored from a backup and then everything was finally working great.
What happened? How in the world could my Utilities folder disappear? This scares me.
My apologies if I put this in the wrong forum.
    Thanks,

    Just thought of something-
Would the lack of an Utilities Folder cause these probs listed above???????

  • I accidentally deleted the "Utilities Folder"

I deleted the Utilities Folder by mistake. Does anyone have any advice on how i can retrieve this folder back ?

Welcome to Discussions - I'm not sure if you can extract it from the install package, I think the simplest thing to do would be to perform an Archive and Install. Read this instructions carefully, and remember to check "preserve user settings and preferences"., Your Utilities should be back and in order.

  • I lost my Application/Utilities folder!

I was double-clicking on my utilities folder (in the Applications folder), and, all of a sudden, it was gone. Now I can't find the Utilities folder anywhere on my computer. I even used the "locate" command in the terminal and was unable to find it. That's an important folder with some important applications in it. Don't know how I'm going to get it back. Would appreciate any help. Thanks.
    echo

    Hi echo!
Have you tried to locate it using the Find function? Command + F keys, or select Find from the Finder File menu.
If it doesn't locate a folder named Utilities, look for an individual utility, like Disk Utility.
Maybe somehow the name of the Utilities folder was changed.

  • Adobe Air Application Installer on Utilities Folder

I just got my first mac early this year so I still haven't gotten the hang of the Mac OS. Anyway, I installed Adobe Photoshop CS4 a few days back but I uninstalled it a few days after. I noticed when I opened my utilities folder I saw the following:
    Adobe Air Applications Installer
    Adobe Air Uninstaller
    Adobe Installer Folder
    Adobe Utilites Folder
I can't remember if the files were there even before I installed the Adobe Photoshop CS4 program. Is it safe for me to remove these files? If it is, how do I remove them? Thanks!

    Figures
Just move them to desktop, restart and see if you get any alerts.
Also check in System Preferences for Version Cue and if you have it, turn it off.

i can't open .pkg files.  i get an error telling me to choose an application to open them.  the Installer app is not in my Utilities folder or in System/Library/CoreServices.

Install the UnArchiver and try again.

There is no Installer.app in the Utilities or Applications folder, there is one in the System/Library/CoreServices.
If yours is not there, then you need to:
1: Backup your data off the machine to a non-TimeMachine drive and disconnect all drives.
2: If you have TM, try to restore the Installer.app from the TM drive and reboot. See if things work.
If the above doesn't work, your going to have to re-install just OS X 10.6 (and bundled programs) from the disk by holding c and booting off the 10.6 disk and simply installing OS X. Then software updating to 10.6.8.
This will replace all bundled programs and OS X, not touch your files (backup regardless) and most third party programs.
Some third party programs will have to be reinstalled form original sources because they install Kext files into OS X and thus kicked out by the 10.6 reinstall form disk.
All should go well, however if you boot to a gray screen or other freeze, reboot holding the shift key down, then update all your third party software to be current to 10.6.8.
Another method is to re-install in to CoreServices the Installer.app from the 10.6 disk using the extraction program called Pacifist from CharleSoft, then running software update to get any updates for Installer.app.

  • Location of utilities folder

I noticed my Utilities folder is in my Applictions folder on my iMac 20. I have made an alias and it rsides next to the Application folder, Library, System, etc on my Hard disk. Every thing appears to be working. Sould I worry about this? If it's a potential problem How do I move? I don't remember the message, but I believe it can be copied not moved. If I did this I suspect it would not allow me to trash the Utility folder in my App Folder. I am running OSX 10.5.8. My Mac Book  Pro, running 10.6.7 has it where I was attempting to move it to on my iMac 20. What do you think?

In Tiger it is in Applications.  Same for Leopard according to:
    http://oreilly.com/mac-os-x/excerpts/mac-os-x-mm/troubleshooting.html
Generally I would avoid messing about too much at the top level of drive because then you really start getting into things with specific permissions in specific locations.

  • Accidentally deleted Utilites Folder

    Hi,
I have accidentally deleted my Utilities folder in 'Applications' thinking it was a folder for Adobe CC which I wanted uninstalled.  Trash Can has been emptied, also, and to pay for my sins I never had Time Machine turned on, never thought I'd need it.  Oops.
I have a late 2012 (i think) iMac 27". It does not have a disk drive so no good using Disc to reinstall anything. Is there anything I can do?  To be honest I didn't even realise anything was wrong until I tried clicking on 'About This Mac' and got nothing.
    Please help.
    Thanks,
    Phil

Restore it from your Time Machine backup or boot into the Recovery Partition (Command + R) on startup and reinstall OS X. This re-install will not overwrite your data files, however you should ALWAYS have a backup in place before doing so.

  • All files in utilities folder gone how best to reinstall them ?

My friend has somehow ended up with her Mac with no files in the utilites folder.. and a search shows they are gone
She is a noob and lives in another country and does not want to do a full reinstall as she is scared of loosing her data.
Is there a way to get these files from the install disks without a reinstall ? I suppose i could copy all my files to a disk and post them too her.. any other ideas?

Download a shareware utility called Pacifist from www.versiontracker.com or www.macupdate.com. Use it to extract the Utilities folder from the file archives on the Tiger DVD. The archives are found in the /System/Installatin/ folder on the DVD. Because the version of OS X on the DVD is likely different from the installed version on the computer you should then reinstall the 10.4.x Combo Updater (Intel or PPC) for the version of OS X currently installed. This will assure that the files will be current.
I suggest you also repair the hard disk and permissions beforehand:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your OS X volume from the list on the left, click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (3.0.3 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.1 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X. Note that Disk Warrior will not work on Intel Macs.
One does not "somehow end up" with no files in the Utilities folder. Someone had to remove them deliberately.
