BK Precision device works in VISA test panel but fails when using driver

I am trying to control a BK Precision XLN power supply.  I have set it up as a TCPIP VISA instrument using sockets (port 5025).  It validates fine in NI MAX, and when using the VISA test panels I can write to and read from it (although I get a timeout error on the read if I specify too many bytes).  When I use the supplied instrument driver blocks in LV, VISA read commands always timeout and fail to return anything, regardless of how many bytes are specified.

I don't think it is a VXI-11/LXI instrument, it did not autodetect and I had to use the 'Manual Entry of Raw Socket' option to set up the device.  I am sending  a termination on the write (\n), if I don't send a termination on the read it captures the read but then gives a timeout error if waiting for more bytes, if I use a termination cahracter on the read it functions as you would expect, except that it returns multiple termination characters (line or carriage feeds) in some messages so you would have to perform multiple reads to get the whole message.  (this is all in the test panels, I haven't gotten anything back using the VISA blocks in a VI)
Given that behaviour it seems more like what you would get using a telnet terminal interface but even given that I still am confused why I can talk to it with the test panel and not using the VISA blocks in a VI.
Thanks,
Stearns

  • VISA (Serial port) commands fail in the VI, but work in VISA test panel

    Hi, I have an instrument which has a usb connection. When I connect it to a Windows 7 PC, it automatically picks up the driver and shows up as a "USB Serial Port (COM7) (Manufacturer is FTDI).
    When I open up NI MAX, this device shows up as COM7 (ASRL7::INSTR) under "Serial and Parallel". And, when I click on Open VISA Test Panel, and try the "*IDN?" command, it works OK.
    However, the VI (which just sends a VISA command "*IDN?") gives me a time out error (0XBFF0015) or a device/resource not present error ( 0XBFFF0011). Attached is a screenshot of the VI.
    Any ideas why?
    Thanks.
    PS: I went through the process to create the VISA-USB driver, but that has some other issue, but I am trying to understand why this occurs. This device also has a GPIB port and when I use a USB-GPIB adapter, it works very well.

    Look up the examples that ship with LabVIEW.  What you have there isn't quite complete - for serial VISA.  While GPIB will work great with what you have, serial VISA requires you to configure your serial port and is a little more complicated to read.

  • DAQ card works with NIDAQ test panel but not with VB app/Component works

    I am seeing this problem with 2 different DAQ cards. The card works fine with the NIDAQ test panel, but acts like the return lead is lifted with my VB app. The plotted signal appears to be little more than noise. Channel scan is internally triggered; that apparently works fine. The VB app is running in this configuration successfully in other areas, and I fixed this problem once by swapping cards. Currently, I lack a spare, as my "spare" is showing the same symptoms. Any helpful hints?
    Card type: AT-AI-16XE-10
    Configuration: Double-ended input, +/-10V range
    Running: VB6, NIDAQ 6.1, ComponentWorks Std. 2.0.1, Windows NT 4.0 SP5

    I upgraded to NI-DAQ 6.8.1 (with patch), but no joy. The upgrade went smoothly, the card was recognized and I was able to set the resources without a problem. The test panel works fine looking at the actual signal on the target system: slowly varying DC between 0-5 V or so. My app works fine also, except that it behaves as though the A/D is not connected to anything: noise between .05-.1 V or so. I swapped DAQ cards between the test system and my development system. The problem appears to be in the test system, not on the card. Another test system, identical except for (now) the version of NI-DAQ, works fine. I'm stumped!
    BTW, why are there 3 DMA channels listed in the configuration for this DAQ? Do all 3 need to be assigned? I've run some systems
    for years with only the first 2 assigned.

  • Scp works when logging with my user id but fails when using another one

    Hello all:
    I wrote a script that uses scp to transfer specific local files to a server. The script takes the user id and password and pass them as scp's parameters for authentication.
    Everything works fine when I uses my own user id to test the script but it fails when I used another id (with ligitimate password) to do the same thing.
    I suspect it's a privilege issue. Both ids belong to the same group. Where should I look to fingure this out?
    Thanks,
    John

    SCP is part of SSH. SSH requires the exchange of authorization keys to prevent man-in-the-middle attacks.
    When you log in the first time you may see a prompt like:
    RSA key fingerprint is 98:2e:d7:e0:de:9f:ac:67:28:d2:42:2e:37:16:58:45.
    Are you sure you want to continue connecting (yes/no)?
    This might be where your script fails. Since it prompts only the first time, you may just have to do one interactive SSH login to create an entry in ~/.ssh/known_hosts
    Or setup User equivalence to omit the exchange of passwords.

  • In Max 3.1.1 no daqmx device works with its test panel or self test

    I have a NI-5122 device and since loading DAQ 7.3 no DAQmx device appears to work.

  • Correct termocouple reading by VI channel test panel but not by DAQ wizards.

    1. I am getting correct termocouple readings when using the virtual channel test panel, but not when using labView software created by the DAQ wizards. why and how to solve it?
    2. I am unable to switch on 6V relay using DAQ card's output voltage but able to do so using other voltage supply. How to solve this?

    In answer to #2, the DAQ card's analog and digital outputs cannot drive
    enough current to turn on a relay. What you need to do is use the output to
    drive a MSOFET or transistor that will drive the relay. You can use the 5V
    computer supply that is available on the DAQ card connector as the power
    supply that the MOSFET or transistor use to turn the relay on.

  • Visa test panel in NI MAX ver 5.4.0 read timeout

    I am using the visa test panel in NI MAX ver 5.4.0 and I connect to a CVI application I currently have a server socket up and running. My server accepts the connection form the visa test panel ok, and when I write from the visa my application sees it immediately. Then I try to read and the visa will timeout, at which point the visa displays what I sent in the 'send' command. I cannot determine why the visa writes to my application ok but the send is not received until the timeout occurs in the visa tool. In my application I am doing a simple 'send' on a valid socket. I am not sure why, but if anyone has any answers I would appreciate it. Here is a snippet of my code in my main:
      char sendbuf[64];
      strcpy (sendbuf, "ACK\n");
      /* Initialize WINSOCK before any socket calls are made */
      iResult = WSAStartup(MAKEWORD(2,2), &WSAData);
      if ( iResult != 0 )
       return SOCKET_ERROR;
      if ((ServerSock = SockOpenServer(SERVER_PORT_NUMBER_TCP)) == SOCKET_ERROR)
       return SOCKET_ERROR;
      /* By now the socket should be successfully bound.                */
      /* Wait for clients to connect. As each client connects,          */
      AcceptedSock = SockWaitForAccept(ServerSock);
      /* Indicate the socket has been initialized and a client has been accepted */
      if (AcceptedSock > 0)
       isServerInitComplete = TRUE;
      else if (AcceptedSock == SOCKET_ERROR)
       runRDPServer = FALSE;
      while (runRDPServer)
       BytesReceived = recv(AcceptedSock, ptrCh, BytesToRead, 0);
       if (BytesReceived > 0)
        /* for now just send back an ACK to ackknowledge the receipt of data */
        if (strncmp(ptrCh, "*IDN", 4) == 0)
         BytesSent = send(AcceptedSock, sendbuf, (int)strlen(sendbuf), 0 );
        if (strncmp(ptrCh, "*ESE", 4) == 0)
         runRDPServer = FALSE;

    Stephanie, I did go look at the link you provided this morning. That particular paper seem to deal with serial connections. The app I have is for TCP/IP and that's where my problem is. I did find out today, that when talking to my app using a LabView app for TCP there is no timeout in the receipt of data in the LabView TCP app, where as the Visa connection timeouts but still reads the buffer after the timeout occurs. So there is something in that Visa connection to my app, which is a server in 'C' creating the socket. We are currently going to continue with an interface with a LabView TCP connection to my app. Thanks for your input.

  • VISA Test Panel doesn't work on Non-Developer Environment

    I'm trying to make an executable to be installed on other machines. I have included VISA support and NI MAX along with the runtime environment software. In order to see how flexible my code needs to be, I'm trying to use NI MAX to see how to read/write to the different instruments. However, the VISA Test Panel button is completely grayed out and cannot be clicked. While it is not working, I've been using Hyperterminal, but I need more details than Hyperterminal can provide (but NI MAX can). I can see the COM Ports correctly and they can be written to/read from using LabVIEW (it's the output format that I need to know).
    I'm using LabVIEW 2013, but it also happened with LabVIEW 2012 SP1 f4.
    Thanks,
    Quevvy

    LabVIEW is definitely relevant in this case: it was installed using an installer BUILT IN LabVIEW.
    But installing the full version of NI-VISA worked.

  • Has to type each character twice while supplying command in Open VISA test panel

    has a set of commands to work witha system connected to the MS windows PC. when I trype the commands in Hyperterminal (with/without ) they are yielding the expected results.
    in LabVIEW, to get the expected results I MUST has to type 'each character' in the command Twice(except blank space) in the Open VISA test panel (viWrite/viRead). If I give the command  is given the usual way(with each character typed only once), the result always is 'illegal command'.....the same works fine in the Hyperterminal.

    What confused Ashwin is that you said "In LabVIEW". OK, so you're using the MAX test panel. There's one thing that's not clear. You said "when I trype the commands in Hyperterminal (with/without )". With/without what? How is your Hyperterminal session configured? Have you tried something like PortMon to see what's actually being sent from the serial port driver?

  • Can not send command via VISA test panel in MAX

    Hello all,
    I am having a small issue using the VISA test panel in MAX.  I am trying to send a simple command to a device and then retrieve the response data.  I am able to do this successfully via Labview, but for whatever reason I can not get a good response in MAX.  The command that I am sending is simply a letter (address of the device) followed by an end of line character (\r\n in ascii).  In MAX, I simply append the \r\n onto the string sent in the buffer (Send End on Writes == FALSE).  All serial settings are the same as what I have in LV (19.2, 8-n-1).  Does anyone have any thoughts?  This is kind of frustrating as I just want to do something simple and don't want to have to build a whole routine in LV to do this.
    Cheers, Matt

    Thanks, Broken.  I am getting a time out error.  Clearing the buffers doesn't seem to be making a difference. This is baffling to me.  I must be missing something fundamental.
    Something that I didn't add before is that I seem to be able to send the command via labview without a read, and then read it via MAX.  This must have something to do with way it is sending the command.  Arrrrgh!

  • MAX visa test panel viread error 0xBFFF0015

    I am running labview 8.5 and VISA 4.2. When I go to MAX and open the VISA test panel, the viread malfuctions. When I test it, it returns a timeout error (Hex= 0xBFFF0015). The viwrite tab also gives me the same timeout error sometimes. What can I do to correct this error?
    Also, In the labview program, we are using an RS232 serial port to collect data. Using the visa configure serial port function, we have set the timeout to 10 seconds, and we have set the VISA read byte count to 1. In our code, we have three subVIs in a visa session. The first one works fine, the second and third malfunction, because the bytes at the port show a value of 0.  Is there any relation between this problem and the previous one? Thanks for any help!

    I do not know if you are familiar with the instrument, it is a CSAT3 3D sonic anemometer. I have attached the three subVIs, since I am not sure exactly what the command is. I am very new to labview, so I am not too familiar with the commands.
    The initialize VI is the first one executed, the second is the SA sync, and the read anemometer is the third one.

  • Java mapping in ccBPM works in PI 7.0 but fails in PI 7.1

    Hi guys,
    at the moment we are upgrading form SAP PI 7.0 to SAP PI 7.11.
    In a scenario for processing of incoming orders we use an ccBPM.
    In this ccBPM there is an mapping where the original xml document of the order are combined with some
    additional information form an web service (multi mapping 2 => 1)
    The result of this mapping is processed further to create an sales order in the backend.
    The multi mapping an java mapping is used.
    Now we are testing the scenario with PI 7.11 and it fails at this mapping step.
    in the workflow log following error occurs.
    An exception with the type CX_ST_MATCH_ELEMENT occ urred, but was neither handled locally, nor de
    Message no. W8899
    I tested the same message on out SAP PI 7.0 system and the whole ccBPM works well.
    When I extract the 2 messages from workflow log and paste them into the test tab of the operation mapping of Enterprise Service Builder of SAP PI 7.11, surrounding by the envelope used by multi mappings

    the mapping works without error, but at runtime it fails, throwing the error mentioned above.
    What could be the reason for this error?
    Does the multi mapping change in PI 7.11 at runtime?
    Could it be a problem parsing the multi message?
    Any help appreciated.

    Hi Raja,
    thanks for your suggest.
    I know this issue, the java class files are compiled using jdk 1.5.
    We made some more tests.
    e.g. created an dummy ccBPM with two mappings, one two spilt the incoming message in two messages (graphical message mapping) and one to merge this two messages to one message again (java mapping)
    the mapping works at design time on test tab, but fails with the same error at rumtime.
    Also we tested one single operation mapping with this two mappings (split via graphical mapping and merge via java mapping)
    This works also at design time but fails at runtime with a similar error shown in smq2
    The error message is Error ST_MATCH_FAIL occured. P1=element-start P2=M
    we tried to add the whole incoming message to the trace by
    getTrace().addWarning()
    but an trace object is never created in for this step in the workflow log.
    it seem whether you can not add trace messages using the command or that the error occures before this command will be used.
    Kind regards

    Hi Tina,
    Thanks for your reply.
    I do have NUnit adapter installed. I even noticed that the test runs fine with NUnit GUI and also if I run it through Resharper Test Explorer window.
    As you can see in the image above the same test is passed when I ran it from Resharper Unit Test Explorer window but fails when I ran it from Test Explorer window. I also captured the information on fiddler.
    There was a significant difference in the Header Content length. Also under the User-Agent property the protocol versions are different.
    Not sure why VSTest ExecutionEngine is picking a different version.
    The UnitTest in question is calling a webservice method which in turn calls a method from another referenced project.

  • SSIS package works in development environment but fails when job scheduler executes, file path invalid

    SIS package works in development environment but fails when job scheduler executes, file path invalid
    Relatively simple package to get OLE-DB connection to MS FoxPro 9.0 DB
    The failure in the job log states that the path is invalid its a network path (\\192.168.1.xxx\foldername) this has been run several ways with the remote computer being mapped as a network drive and through the \\ notation described above.
    Thinking it was a security issue between the SQL agent account and my account I tested by subsitution myself as a proxy account for the agent when running this job, again same result failed on network path.
    One issue I see is that the remote computer is running Server 2000 (legacy software incompatable with newer versions)
    Is it possible that this is a security issue, since if i understand correctly the current MS domain security model didn't exist until Server 2003.

    Hi REIData,
    Have you got the issue resolved? Based on your description, please make sure the target folder is shared properly. If the computer on which the SQL Server Agent job runs doesn’t join the domain as the server that hosts the shared folder, you have to share
    the folder with everyone by adding “Everyone” to the people list on the File Sharing page of the folder and assign "Read/Write" permission to it.

    1- Dolphin, awesome I have used thunar a while and it is great but I love splitview, and fish for ssh (which has been around a while I know), and the ability to mount other partitions on my hdd with a click no fstab entry or nothin'.
    2-Pretty, I've used xfce with built in compositor an love the snappiness. But I like desktop grid with kde4 and flipswitch. Compiz-fusion is cool but I prefer not to use I'll take what the DE gives. Plasmoid are cool too.
    3- Gwenview is nice too. Use to use gqview, but thumnails are nice.
    Looking forward to or lacking
    1- Keyboard shortcuts, Yes xbindkeys is there but if I have a DE I want it to do it. They just don't work now.
    2- kde4 has windows specific settings, but I can't set the opacity for particular windows , doesn't work.
    3- Ram of course is much higher in kde4, but maybe I'm getting old I just don't care as much.
