Black blocks in my Camera Roll

Hi, I have an iPhone 3G running 4.0.1. Since getting this update I have a big black block in my camera roll, covering some images, 5 to be exact. It's hard to explain, it's just a black block covering most of the 5 images, like a glitch looking thing. I've taken photos, deleted photos and synced the phone and it's still there. Anyone heard or got this??

I had the same problem with the black blocks after upgrading to iOS4 on my iPhone. The reason for the black blocks is that the thumbnail images for those particular images have not been created when the Photo Library has been updated to iOS4. I followed the advice on a couple of blogs and fixed the problem.
1. I downloaded iPhone Explorer free software (http://www.macroplant.com/iphoneexplorer/) so I could view the photo data folders on my phone. I could see that the thumbnail images were missing.
2. I followed a slight variation on the instructions on this blog. (http://blog.mbentley.net/2010/06/iphone-ios-4-upgrade-restore-lost-pictures-in-c amera-roll/)
3. First I copied the Photo Data folder by dragging it from the iPhone Explorer window to my Mac desktop.
4. Through iPhone Explorer I deleted the info.plist file in the Media/PhotoData/MISC folder.
5. I also deleted the Photos.sqlite and PhotosAux.sqlite files in Media/PhotoData.
6. I then rebooted the phone and launched the Photo Library.
7. The Library rebuilt it's self again and recreated the thumbnails.
8. The problem was fixed!!! Thank you M Bentley!
I hope this helps - this has been bugging me for 2 weeks.

  • SCAREY Black squares-"patches" in camera roll

how to remove black patches in the camera roll on the iphone?....

First remove all the photos from your phone and do a hard reset (home + power buttons until the apple logo appears)... Then check to make sure you have no black boxes....
Then try installing photos in bunches rather than all at once. There are a few ways to do this using the "selected photos" option in the photo tab in iTunes. I like to do it in small groups - say 10 photos at a time - until the problem shows up again ...once I find black boxes, I would remove that group and then sync those photos one at a time until I find the problematic one... and just keep on doing this until you isolate the problems - delete the problem photos (or put them in an album that you won't sync) as you locate them.
Other people recommend syncing half your photos - if black boxes appear in that group... delete the photos from your phone and then divide that group in half (sync 1/4 of your photos), etc. etc until you find the problems.
One thing that helped me find some of my corrupt photos (18 out of more than 15,600!) was that sometimes (but not always) iTunes would give me an alert box saying that a certain photo (identified by the file name) and XX others couldn't be sync'd because it wasn't in the correct format. So this helped me locate about half of the bad ones as I was going through the process. Unfortunately, iTunes never gave me more than one file name at a time - it would be nice if Apple revised that error message to give you a list of everything that was "in the wrong format."
So as not to lose the photos, my plan was to export them from iPhoto, delete the ones in iphoto, open the exported photos in another application and resave them before importing them again into iphoto. But as it turned out, every one of my corrupt photos turned out to have a duplicate in iPhoto... I can't say if this was indicative of the issue, but if you have a lot of photos you might want to try creating an album of just your duplicate photos and see if this is indeed a bad group.
It's a time consuming process, but worth it. If those corrupt files are causing issues in the phone, they might very well be causing other issues in your system.
By the way, once I got rid of the corrupt photos, syncing was infinitely faster....so I guess they were really hanging up the process

  • Photos in camera roll have become blurred, can't take new ones

My old photos in my iPhone4 camera roll have become blurred and I can't take new photos, as they aren't saved properly (either they look blurred or i see a blank or black rectangle in the camera roll). Any ideas? I do not want to reinstall the iOS please...

Yes I've tried it, several times. I've shut down all the apps, then put in "airplane" mode, then reset, then reset again..
    Nothing changes

  • Problem with Photos in Camera Roll after 4.0.1

    Hello,
    I have a 16GB iPhone 3G.
I updated to iOS4.0 the day it came out, and other than the slowness that everyone else was reporting, I didn't have any other issues.
When I updated to 4.0.1, everything seems a touch better performance wise, but I found a problem with my camera roll.
First, when I opened the Photos App, there was no thumbnail for Camera Roll (all others were ok).
I opened the camera roll, and the last 50 or so pics that I had taken, were all showing as one big Black blob (not individual black thumbnails, they were all joined)
If I scrolled up to older pictures, the older ones were fine.
I took a new picture to test it, and that one looks fine.
So now I can see all my OLD pictures, and any NEW pictures I take, but those same 50 pictures were still showing as one big BLACK blob.
I can still access the pictures if I touch them, and I can flip through them without any problems. I can also copy these photos from my phone to my PC, so the pictures themselves seem to be fine.
And after copying them to my PC, what I noticed by examining the timestamps, was that the problematic pictures were all taken after I updated to iOS 4.0. It seems that all pictures from 3.1.3 or earlier are showing fine, and now all pictures taken with 4.0.1 are showing fine as well. So only pictures taken with 4.0 seem to be affected.
Is there anything I can do to fix this?
(Just for the record, my phone is not and has never been jailbroken.)

    There is a solution!!
After installing iOS4.0.1 update on my 3G, I too had the black
blob in my camera roll. As posted in an earlier thread, here's
one way to resolve this problem. It worked for me!
Just email the photos that don't appear in the camera roll to myself,
delete the offending photos and then re-save them from the email.
A bit of a pain but it's a way around it. Good luck!

Or is it possible to restore to the previous software please.
I am trying to save photos off my website to use in documents but can't save any

I was on 7.1 and just updated to 7.1.2. Issue is I dint backup my iphone in 6 months as I did not have a permanent laptop. Now I just got a new laptop and decided to backup my iphone and also upgrade to 7.1.2.  Issue is - while the update was in progress I disconnected the cable since I was getting late for an appointment. Now when I got finally upgraded to 7.1.2, I dont see my apps and music anymore. They all seem to disappear. I cant even back up to the older date. All I see is the option to back up to the 7.1.2 version only. The only solace is I still have photos intact. Rest all data seems to be gone. Please help!!! urgent!!!
Apps aren't part of the backup, only the app data.
See if you can redownload apps - settings - apps - update - purchase - hit cloud to redownload app.
Did you copy your iTunes media library to your new laptop?

  • IPHONE 5: Saving images to camera roll from an email results in a black image

I have emailed myself a couple images  (medium res .jpgs) and when I open the email the colors are overly bright. When I then go to save them, they save as a very dark black image with a little bit of a blue outline of the image. Anyone know what the problem is? Thanks in advance!
PS these images are illustrations I have made in illustrator/photoshop. Not sure if that matters though.

Depending on the format of the video you may or may not be able to do this.
If its a supported format, like m4v or similar, you can tap and hold on the icon in the email and a box with options should pop up.  One of them being "Save Video". This will save the video to the camera roll.
If you don't have the "Save Video "  option you will not be able to save it your camera roll, but still might be able to save it to an App that can play the video by tapping the icon for the App in that same screen.

  • Camera Roll Blacked Out

I upgraded to 4.1...everything seemed to go ok but when I looked at my Camera Roll, all of my photos were blacked out! It's like a black sheet is over my photos. All the photos are still there but I can only view the photos I saved "after" I upgraded. If I just touch a spot on the blacked out sheet...one of my photos will show up...but I can't get rid of the "black sheet" over my photos!!!

Yeah, with 4.1, I guess you could say "black sheet happens." The only way I got rid of it was to transfer all the original images to my laptop and then transfer them back into an album. Of course, then I found out that "sideways sheet happens" too.

  • IMoviemobile export to Camera Roll will not play with quicktime on PC (video plays but with black screen, audio ok)

Videos created in iMovie on the new ipad will not play on PC with Quicktime after being exported to the Camera Roll and copied to the PC. Movie will play but with a black screen only. Audio ok. Was able to do before ios 6 but not now.

I'm having the same problem. All of the movies I export out of iMovie since upgrading to the latest version show up with no video, only audio, in Quicktime. Ironically the video place just fine in Windows Media Player and also in iTunes.

  • Camera roll preview thumbs blacked out after OS4 update

After the latest iPhone 4.01 update, all the preview thumbs in my camera roll are displaying as black. New pictures display correctly, but ALL two hundred picture previews I had on the phone are black.

There are a couple of other threads on this issue and how to fix it (requires using a 3rd party desktop app to rebuild the image database), but with any luck it is fixed in 4.2, which should be out very shortly. If you search the forum you should find the suggestions if you don't want to wait or are cautious about updating.

  • After updating my software to iOS 6 when I take a photo in an app on my iPhone such as Instagram and camwow when the photos go my camera roll they are black..why?

After updating my software to iOS 6 when I take a photo in an app on my iPhone such as Instagram and camwow when the photos go my camera roll they are black..why?

I upgraded an iPhone 4 from IOS 4 to IOS 6 and had similar problems here is what I did.
    Problem:
Using the Camera App from the initial screen (a view finder for me) there is an icon on the lower left side with my last photo taken.  When I select this icon the image is displayed and on the upper left side of the screen the Camera Roll button appears.
I select the Camera Roll button and all my images show up as black on a white background.  I can select a black square and my image will apear.
Using the Instagram App when I try to select from my Camera Roll I see the same black boxes, and Instagram is not saving photos to my Camera Roll.
    Fixing Instagram not saving problem:
    Go to Settings:Privacy:Photos
Move the Instagram slider to ON
Back to the images not showing in the Camera Roll.
Someone suggested doing a reset (hold down sleep and home button for 10 seconds).  After doing the reset the problem was worse.  From the Camera App selecting the last photo icon from the view finder screen and the Camera Roll screen apears but says there are no saved images.
Fixing the Camera Roll not showing correctly problem:
Set Settings:General:Restrictions to ON (You will be prompted to create a password)
    Select Settings:General:Restrictions ON>
Toggle the Camera slider to ON if it isnt already
This worked for me. Your milage may vary.  Good luck.

  • When i click an image in my camera roll it enlarges to black

when i click an image in my camera roll it enlarges to black

Try a reset: hold down the home button along with the sleep/wake button until you see the apple, then let go. (No data loss)

  • Deleting photos out of camera roll leaves black spaces where pics used to b

Only happens on my iPhone 4. 3GS with os4 it doesn't.
    Any ideas
For info they do disappear if u sync in iTunes.

You don't have to sync it or turn your phone off to get it to go away (one of which is annoying and the other is inconvenient). All you do is go back out of the camera roll, close the app, then open the multitask tray and delete Photos or Camera (you know by holding until they jiggle) and when you go back in to the apps, they are fixed.

You have two choices to try & fix this: 1. Backup your phone, then restore as a new device, then restore from the backup you first created, or 2. Follow the advise from this poster:

  • My Iphone4 just stopped saving pics to camera roll from screen shot, email, safari, text and more.....

I have a 32gb iphone4 with ios 4.3.5(8L1).  Yesterday I was given ,via sd card, 6 pictures of me that were taken a few days ago. I emailed these pics from my home computer to myself so I could save them on my iphone4, so I could edit them in Camera+ and post them on Instagram.  I saved all 6 from email to my camera roll no problem.  Then I imported the first one into Camera+ and edited it. When I went to save the edited picture to my camera roll it took a long time to save. (or so I thought it was saving).  When I went to my camera roll to look at it my camera roll said " Rebuilding Camera Roll ". When it was done my picture was not there.  So I tried again with the same outcome. Then I tried to go back to my email and save another picture. No luck, " Rebuilding Camera Roll " and no picture saved after that.  So then I tried to edit a picture that I actually took with my Iphone4 built in camera and same issue.  Then I tried to take a picture through Camera+ and same outcome.  Then I tried to save through safari and still no luck.  Then I went back to my email picture and did a screenshot. It worked!! Then I tried it again and it did not work.  Then I tried to master reset and this did not fix anything.  Then I turned my phone off over night thinking that would do the trick, nope!  Then I tried all the above again today with no luck.  Then I called Apple Tech. and they want $30 to talk to them to ask them what is wrong. That made me very disappointed since I paid over $400 dollars for my phone and pay over $1500 a year to use it.  That's bad business if you ask me and will weigh in when it is time to renew.  Does anyone have any insight on what the problem may be and, or how to fix it??  Please help!! Thank you very much!

Ighnot, are you jailbroken? Cause I am and I have the same problem except worse. I can't save a single pic, every single time I get the thumbnail grey box with jpg in it and the actual pic is black. Only way I get pic is by zooming in then taking screenshot and I still get the stupid safari toolbox and address bar in the pic

  • I can't access my photos in camera roll.

I can't access my photos in camera roll. It just shows blank boxes instead of the images. When I click 'edit', I can see the image but it won't save, email, sms or anything. If I click on a video, it kicks me out back to home screen. Any ideas what to do?

I am having the same thing as well. I click the photos app, I try view the photos I have taken, it just closed out of the photos app and goes straight back to the home screen. There is another way to see the photos you have taken. You click on the camera, then you click on the photos on the bottom left corner, it works for me. I can see all the pictures I have taken.
I've been having problems with my camera, whenever I take a picture (with/without flash) my photos turn out black, was wondering if anyone can help us out about this problem.
