Black Macbook Startup Issues

Hey guys.
I'm having a distressful startup issue with my Macbook (13-inch, black). It's happened to me before, but that was a few months ago and everything was fine. Now it's happening again and I'm getting worried that the workaround I've found won't work anymore.
The first time it happened, I wanted to restart my computer because I had installed a bunch of things and it was running a little slow. After I restarted, I heard the "GONG", the apple appeared, and the spinning gear also appeared. It seemed to be working, but after a few minutes, the apple changed to a "do not enter" sign.
I tried resetting the P-RAM to no avail, and finally ended up starting up in Safe Mode (by holding the Shift Key) which at least allowed me to start up my computer. From there, I was able to reset and my computer started up normally after that just fine.
Now, last night, the same thing started happening. There were a few different things that happened this time. For one, I got a big gray box on my screen that told me I needed to reset my computer in a few different languages. Secondly, (the only thing I can attribute the cause to) was that I had opened iChat for the first time in 5 months or so. Shortly after is when I got the box.
So I reset and started having the same problem. I've reset in safe mode now, and am currently installing an update to OSX 10.6.3.
The only programs running at the time of the incident were:
-Google Chrome
-Text Edit
-iCal
-iTunes
Any help you guys have for me would be GREATLY appreciated! I took it to an Apple store the first time it happened and they didn't know what was wrong with it. :/

Well, after booting in Safe Mode and installing the update, it started up just fine. I am afraid that this is going to happen again, though. Any help you guys have would be GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks.

  • Macbook Startup Issue - Help!!!!!!!!!!!!

My 2006 mac book had a start up issue a couple of years back, I'd boot her up to be greeted with a screen displaying a start up failed message in three different languages on a grey screen. http://www.minneapolispcrepair.com/images/mac%20error%20screen.jpg
Looking into the issue I noticed this model of Macbooks had issues with their hard drives and they could be replaced under warranty. Brilliant, booked myself into see a Genius and ha presto a few weeks later my hard drive had been replaced. However a couple of weeks after the replacement the issue started happening again but after a few attempts the Macbook would fire up so it wasn't really an issue just a pain in the butt!! Now 18 months down the line its becoming a real issue again, it must take 7 or 8 attempts to fire the blasted thing up, 25 is my highest so how.
My question is, what could be causing this start up issue, could it be the hard drive again???? as replacing the hard drive previously didn't really solve the issue in the first place?? Would apple replace this hard drive again????
The MB is a late 2006 model with Dual Core run Snow Leopard
    Hope someone can help :o(
    Thanks

This looks like a kernel panic. Try to startup the mac in safe mode (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1455) and observe for a few startups whether the problem occurs again or not.
If this solves the problem then you may have a problem with your software installation. Consider reinstalling os x or take a look at your system log file and search for kernel panics (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3742).
If the problem persists you may have an issue with your hardware. I would recommend to take it to an Apple Genius to have the system checked (free of charge afaik).

  • New black MacBook, USB issue

I have a friend (no, seriously) that just made "the switch" and moved to a black MacBook at my urging. It's brand new, but from day 1 he has been complaining that anything he plugs into one of the USB ports keeps dropping out randomly. He said he found on some website that this is just a MacBook issue and that the solution is to use the other port. Then today he said the other one intermittently started drop out too.
I say it's broken, he should send it back and get a new one... but I don't know enough about the MacBooks to tell him that it's a unique issue.
Anyone else seen anything like this?

    Hey guys.
I use Scratch Live also, and BTW its Serato.
anyway, this is quite the problem over at Scratchlive.net
Many of the users have run tests and have come to the conclusion that when the SL1 box is plugged into the "bad" port, that being the USB closest to the firewire cable, it is somehow linked to the track pad, and therefore goes into some kind of sleep mode. If you leave the trackpad alone, when the SL1 box is plugged into that port, let it sit for 20 seconds, then touch the pad you will get a drop out.
This is the case for both the MBP, and the MB.
The funny thing is...when we run Scratch Live in windows XP, using bootcamp...the problem is not there, WHAT-SO-EVER.
So this is obviously a Mac OSX issue.
The problem still persists and I've got the Developer versions of 10.4.9, and still the problem is there.
This isnt just a case for Scratch Live either, it happens with ANY audio interface that is plugged into the bad port.
I.E. Mbox, Scratch Live...anything USB audio interface related.
So hope this helps and check the link...its a big problem in this DJ community.
    lol.
    help?
any Developers out there that can write a code that prevents the track pad going into sleep mode?

  • 1st gen Black MacBook - airport issues

I have a June 2006 Black MacBook that I recently upgraded to 10.5.6. Since then, I have had very poor airport connectivity. Where I once had excellent WiFi, I now have none. What the heck is going on?? I often must sit adjacent to the signal source in order to connect...even 10 feet of merely air space will cause my WiFi to fail. What's the point!

    HI,
Your Airport preference files might be corrupted as a result of the upgrade to 10.5.6.
    Try deleting this file. com.apple.airport.airportutility.plist
/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag that file from the Preferences folder to the Trash, empty the Trash and restart your MacBook. See if that makes a difference in the signal, of not...
Are you using an Airport Extreme Base Station? Airport Express? If so, try resettting.

  • Black MacBook Screen Issue

I have a black macbook that I purchased in the spring of 08 that hasn't had any problems until a few months ago. Whenever I would open my computer the screen would turn black but as I went to shut it the screen would come back on. For awhile I was able to jiggle the screen back and forth until I got the screen to stay lit while the computer was open but it's gotten so bad lately that moving the screen back and forth isn't working and the computer only thinks it's open with a lit screen when it's very close to being shut. Does anyone know what the problem might be and whether or not it can be fixed? If it can be fixed, is it worth the money to fix it or am I better off buying a new macbook pro?

The same thing has happened to me now three times too. It seems to be very unpredictable. Zapping PRAM always fixes it. Man why did I buy a first gen MacBook? I usually always wait till the first revision. Oh Well.
Do you also have the click preceding each new sound? To check for this plug in headphones or powered speakers and turn the volume all the way up on the speakers. Then turn the Mac's volume all the way down. Now hit the mute and unmute button and see if you hear a tick or a click in the headphones each time the unmute is turned on. The audio system has a flaw. I have verified it so far on every MacBook I have tried it on.

  • MacBook startup issues

how can i fix my macbook from spinning on startup?  I tried starting in safe mode but it still did not work?

    Mark H 10000,
which model MacBook do you have, and which version of OS X is installed on it?

  • To people who know about Macbook startup issues, can you please help me???

I have a troubleshooting issue regarding the bootup on my Macbook which I have been using it for a year or two since December of 2007. I have no problems of it until now and it's making me frustrated. When I was doing a homework assignment for school, I used the Spotlight search feature to search for the assignment I wanted. All of a sudden, my Mac frozed on me that I decided to press the power button to turn it off. I did it successfully until I started it back up. When the computer tries to turn it on, there are three short beeps (beep - beep - beep repeating itself for 2-3 sec) along with the blinking light indicating something's is up. Any ideas or solutions??? Please, thank you.

Hmm. Is this series of beeps similar to a "S.O.S." type sound?
First thing to try is reseating the memory as outlined here:

Do you have your install discs? Has the computer been repaired or upgraded since you purchased it?

  • 13" 2006 Macbook startup issues after installing new software

Okay, so I get the gray screen flashing between with the circle and the line going through it and the folder with a question mark. I press command + s when attempting to start up my computer and I get this message:

Can anyone help me?! Or is this the end of my 8 year relationship with my Macbook

Its kernel couldn't be loaded. This means that you have to reinstall Mac OS X.
If you have the OS X DVD, insert it, hold the C key while your Mac is starting and reinstall Mac OS X. Finally, run Software Update and install the latest version

  • Black MacBook networking issues

I have successfully networked my MacBook with my two Windows desktop computers so that they may interact. Why do the two desktops disappear then reappear periodically in my finder on the MacBook? What can I do to make this stop?

Is there any website you can point me toward for instructions to get a network connection between Windows and my Macbook?

  • Black MacBook 1,2 wifi issues

My 2007 Black MacBook is unable to stay connected to wifi. It can connect right after I turn the computer on and for a few minutes after that, but then it gets disconnected and doesn't show any networks to choose from in the AirPort menu. To reconnect I either have to restart the computer or leave the lid closed for a while (20 minutes-ish). It seems almost like it only has the problem once the computer is warm. It is running Snow Leopard 10.6.8, because unfortunately Lion and above isn't supported on my processor. I have also tried the computer with linux and it has the same problem, leading me to beleive it's more of a hardware issue than software. I suppose I could open up the computer and look at the AirPort card itself, but I don't see what that would do to help. Has anyone had this issue before?

    Help?

  • Black macbook backlight display issue

im working on a friends macbook. the issue is the display. the laptop boots up just fine but after laptop has powered up the screen stays dark. the battery is charged. when the "f2" is tapped once the display lights up a little. when pressed again it goes back to dim. i then have to press the "f1" key to bring down to the lowest setting. i do this all over again some times i can get to around the 3rd brightness setting then it automatically drops to dim. i assume the backlight bulb itself is ok so am i right in saying the inverter is going bad or is there something in the "f1" "f2" keys that is not making a good connection. I hope i explained this well enough. Thanks.

Actually, I don't think you can hook up the USB to a RGB cable.
Wich imputs does your projector support? VGA?
If your projector supports VGA imput you can use a displayport cable with VGA exit and plug the projector there.

  • Black Macbook Issue

    Other things to consider:
-How long is "a long time"?
-How large of a hard drive is in your computer and how much free space do you have?
-How much RAM is in the machine?
-Do you have a lot of login items? You can check this by opening *System Preferences*, clicking on the accounts pane and then the *Login items* tab. If you see a lot of items here, that could cause the longer boot-time. Make a note of which items are installed, and consider removing some or all of them using the minus sign beneath the list.

  • Black MacBook Issues?

I'm looking at jumping on the Intel bandwagon soon in the from of a black Macbook.
How does the black one hold up? Does it look gross after little work? How easy is it to upgrade the drive and RAM? (I'm thinking a stock black Macbook, then RAM from Crucial and a nice big drive from Newegg.)
Are the new models still suffering from the moo and random shutdowns?
    Thanks
    iSMH

The black macbook's case is a matte black, so obviously fingerprints and scratches will stand out most on this. but the surface is pretty tough, so more likely it would be just smudging that would plague your macbook's shell. it's a fast computer. mine was quicker than any of the powerbooks i've used, and it even flies compared to the quicksilver that my uncle owns. it's been a great travel partner before i had the dreaded RSD, but newer models arent likely to get this because of the recent revision, so youre pretty safe.
my recommendation get a drive with a spindle speed of 7,200 RPM, the file access and boot time is quicker than any stock macbook. you'll love front row. its not a productive application, but for its purpose its just so much fun.
P.S. mark this whatever you like, whoring for points is sad.

  • Constant Kernel Panics Black Macbook

Hi I recently acquired a black 2007-2008~ black macbook and I'm having issues figuring out what the issues are with this machine.  Without fail, this macbook will popup the "You need to restart your computer" message at random points, though typically I'm unable to even get it to boot to the login screen before it tells me it's hit a kernel panic.
That being said, I did manage to get it to stay working long enough to email myself the crash log from one of the most recent crashes.
I consider myself pretty computer literate, but I can't find anything to get this to work.  Also, I've attempted runing the AHT (Holding 'D' key on startup), but I haven't been able to get it to run.  I've tried pulling the disc, wiping it, installing all the necessary programs on a nearly identical macbook, but nothing has seemed to work.
I've swapped the ram, keyboard, and airport card into another confirmed working macbook and have had no issues with crashes.
    Please help

Disreagrd the keyboard and mouse idea, for some reason I'm thinking imac instaed of macbook. That said, I stil think you may have a corrupt bluetooth driver. You might first try a safe boot to see if that clears out the problem, if that doesn't help I would try reinstalling OS X. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564

  • Black Macbook out to Sony Bravia Question

So I just bought a new Sony Bravia 22" LCD TV. I'm excited to use the TV as a monitor for my computer, or at least so that I can play back Hulu or other such videos on the TV. The TV supports VGA in as a "PC" input as well as 2 HDMI ports. I know I need to get an adapter for the mini DVI port on my Macbook, however I'm not sure whether to go the route of mini DVI to VGA or mini DVI to DVI with a DVI-HDMI cable to the computer. I know in both cases I will need a separate audio cable so that's not the issue. The TV says that it has a native 720p resolution. I think the highest VGA resolution supported by the TV is 1360x768, but the HDMI is higher I think. Thanks for your help

I also have a black macbook and I recently purchased a 42" Sony Bravia TV and I have a few questions...
    So I think I need 3 things:
    - the mini DVI to VGA cable
    - the VGA to VGA cable (that will connect to my TV right? how long of a cable is useful?)
    - another cable for the audio...
What do I need to get for the audio portion? Someone told me to get a 3.5mm AV RCA Cable with the red/white that connect to the ports on my TV and then the headphone jack on my laptop.
    Advice? Thanks!
