Black Magic Intensity Pro Card

I'm in the process of purchasing a Mac Pro to use for my New Wedding Video Business. I have purchsed the New Sony HVR-HD1000. I'm looking to get everything at one time and something has me very confused. I hope that someone can please help me.
As I understand it. I take my New Sony HD Cam via Firewire800 and Final Cut Studio will just suck it all in.
If thats the case, What is the need for products such as the "Black Magic Intensity Pro Card"?
Do I need it when my Mac Pro/Final Cut will import my footage anyways?
Please help me make a sound decision.
Thank you for your time.

A few things to remember:
The best resolution you will get with your HD camcorder is to record LIVE from the camera to the Intensity card connected via HDMI. No compression (HD to HDV) will occur in the camera before the computer sees it. You can either record uncompressed (best) or have FCP/Premier record with a codec (422, etc.). 422HQ is supposed to be "visually" the same as uncompressed HD but requires significantly less space. Recording HD uncompressed REQUIRES Raid disk setups. Depending on your setup, you may require Raid with with 422. The down side for this highest resolution mode is you MUST have your computer hooked up to the camcorder via HDMI to the Intensity card while recording! Not typically feasible when doing live events and being mobile with your camcorder.
The second best MAY be playing back the recorded video (HDV compressed onto the tape) via the HDMI (not firewire) to the Intensity. Here it depends on the quality of the codec INSIDE the camcorder vs. the software codec in the computer. The advantage with an Intensity card here is that you can record onto the computer using a more "editable" format (see below).
The third best (may be just as good as the second above) is to transport the recorded video (HD compressed) via firewire from the camcorder directly to the mac. The only difference from two above is how good the software codec on the mac is compared to the camera. Opinions vary here.
Editing the DV/HDV directly is often near impossible - meaning it must be recorded (converted) on the hard disk in a more editable format. Long GOP issues arise often/sometimes with DV/HDV (MPEG 2).
Method 2 and 3 allow for portability. Method 1 is NOT portable/mobile.

No disrespect taken. I might not be very technical but some times I wonder if I'm doing the right thing.
Maybe some history will help explain my situation.
I have a old cheap-o hand held Sony SD Mini DV Cam that I used all year to puts around with. As a test of my skills went to weddings and events for fun. All of these events had "Professional Videographers" I was just here for fun with my little camera.
For fun I would turn in my little DVD and the response was incredible. Even though my footage sucked compared to all the "Pro Cameras" being used it was my skills in editing, having fun with the video, and using lots of Motion graphics and titles. I became so popular that people wanted me to actually film events as a paid rig!
With no training what so ever and just tinkering with Final Cut Studio - I have a long list of "word of mouth" gigs with people waiting for me to film for them.
My parents then decided to give me a few gifts. (1) Sony HVR-HD 1000 and (2) JVY GY100HD Cameras. I now have all the gear I need. I never owned cameras like this before so as I started looking into getting a Mac Pro - All these questions came to mind.
My point is - I used a POS camera and consumers ate it all up. I didnt worry about "Color Space" or ProRess anything. I just imported as DV - edit the footage - have fun with it - burn it on DVD and call it a day.
I'm just seriously asking - now that I have nice cameras that didnt cost me a dime - cant I just continue the same way I have been with my POS camera?
Is anything more than just Firewire800 to my Mac really that critical for Weddings on SD DVD's?

  • Black magic intensity pro and fcp 5.14

hi i just installed a black magic intensity pro card to my system since i was having real bad times caputuring anything without dropping many frames and not good video using my sony hdr-fx7 camcorder. well now i get general error 34 messages when i click on audio-video settings. any one with this card can help me please. yes i only have 2 gigs of ram at the moment but i'm getting 2 more are coming today. i should still be able to use my s.d. camcorder and caputure sd footage right?
i tried my autosave vault files, but it still pops up with the general error 34 message.
    thank you

+thanks for all replies.i installed 2 more gig of ram making 4 and the error 34 still shows+
Maybe nobody replies because nobody has a solution for your problem...
Anyway... I think the best way to solve the problem is to contact the Blackmagic support since it could be an issue related to their product rather than an FCP issue...

  • What is the BEST cable connection from Canopus ADVC 300 to Black Magic Intensity Pro HDMI PCI Express Capture Card?

I must connect an ADVC 300 to a Black Magic Intensity Pro HDMI PCI Express Capture Card.   For best quality, which cable should I use?
On the ADVC 300 there are outputs of firewire, S-VHS and RCA.
On BMPro it's a little confusing. On the breakout cable there are connectors that say:
    -5 B-Y OUT
    -4 Y OUT
    -3-R-Y OUT
    -7-R-Y IN
    -8-Y IN
    -9 B-Y IN
    -15 AUDIO IN RIGHT
    -10 AES/EBU OUT
    -12 AUDIO LEFT OUT
    -14 AUDIO LEFT OUT
    -13 AUDIO RIGHT OUT
With the BMPro, there is also a separate, shorter cable.  On one end it looks like S-VHS and on the other there are two connectors, one black and one blue.
On the actual BMPro Express card strip instead of using the breakout cable, there is HDMI IN (and HDMI OUT).
How should I connect this?  Is there an adapter cable of FIREWIRE TO HDMI?
    Any help is much appreciated.

Well, when I researched how best to digitize VHS (into Final Cut Pro 7), I learned two of the best devices to use are BMPro and Canopus ADVC 300.  I’m using the ADVC 300 for the built-in time base corrector.  I definitely want to use that to stabilize the video.  I also read how well BMPro improves image quality.  So, I thought to use the two together must produce outstanding quality (well, as good as VHS can be).
Perhaps I got confused into thinking I can use both.  But the BMPro appears to have an S-VHS adapter.
I guess I’m wondering what is better quality:
Run the firewire from the Canopus ADVC 300 converter directly into the firewire port on the Mac Pro
Or, run an S-VHS cable from the Canopus ADVC 300 into the BMPro Capture card
(I should mention that I have purchased all these items and already have the BMPro Card installed so at this point it’s not a cost issue, but rather an issue of simply which works best?)

  • Black Magic Intensity Pro output issues in FCP7

I just installed a Black Magic Intensity Pro in my office's edit/mix computer. I cannot get FCP7 to output video correctly. The monitor auto senses the HDMI output settings correctly (matching what I have chosen in FCP) but I only get a freeze frame of the last frame when I hit stop.
I have tried every frame rate/resolution setting and it will not work. I've reinstalled FCP7 and the Intensity (newest drivers from the website).
    Any help is welcome!

  • Black Magic Intensity Pro  Driver  for CS7

Can anyone advise (from positive  experience)  ...which Black Magic Intensity Pro  Driver is working for them in CS7?
    Thanx

    Thanx Jon.
    9.7.5 is the latest.
Will try it with a degree of confidence.
Did you delete or disable previous BM driver prior to installing this one ?
Is it working in CS6 as well?
EDIT:  FWIW...Now installed....Works fine for me as well.

  • CS6 Premier Pro and Black Magic Intensity Pro not working?

    Hi,
I am using the trial version of CS6 Premier pro. First the Playback settings in the drop down menu next to the viewer is greay out. Second, when I go into the playback setting through the settings menu I dont see the Black Magic as an option to send my signal out to. Is this a limitation of the trial version?
I have updated everything and the Black Magic works perfect with my CS5 and Final Cut Pro.. Any clues?

    Hi Javier,
The new Mercury Transmit plug-ins from Blackmagic and other hardware partners are selected in a different way than the previous player plug-ins from CS5.5 and earlier.  To turn on transmit, go to the Preferences, in the Playback area.  There, if the plug-ins for your third-party hardware are installed correctly, you'll see options for the Audio Device and Video Device.  Once you select the third-party hardware there, it can be used across sequences and projects.  If the transmit plug-in provides a setup dialog for additional options, you'll see a small setup option on the right side of the Video Device option.
And of course, make sure that you have applied the latest CS6 updates, and are using the latest installer from Blackmagic for CS6.
    Cheers,
    Zac

  • Black Magic Intensity Pro....anything I should know about?

I will be getting the Intensity Pro within a couple days and I was wondering if anyone in here have used it or is using it. Is there anything that I should know about that I may have overlooked?

I just noticed that the screen does not sit securely
when it's closed. There seems to be a 'bow' in the
    whole panel.
Have you heard about this before?
This is actually a common issue on powerbooks and macbook pros. Apple suggests not not worry about the "cosmetic defect", as it doesn't affect the performance and it was design that way to prevent the screen froum touching the keyboard.. I still can't somehow fall for that excuse...

  • How do I get Black Magic Intensity Pro to work in Premiere CC?

The card works fine in CS6 and Final Cut Pro.  I crosschecked the settings in CS6 and CC and as far as I can tell, they are the same.  I updated to the latest BM driver today.  Is there a setting deep down in some menu that I'm overlooking?
I thought it might be the project I'm working on since it is iPhone footage (I don't know why that would be an issue) so I checked some other projects that have a variety of different fomrats (RED, DSLR, etc...) and still no audio or external monitor output.  I also tried several different sequence cocktails and still nothing.
I'm working with a Mac Pro running the latest version of Lion.

I have updated the BM drivers and uninstalled and reinstalled Premiere CC.  The problem isn't fixed.
    Here is what happens now:
If I take a clip from my bin and drag it to the sequence icon in the lower right hand corner of the bin to create a new sequence, I can get a signal to my monitor and speakers.  I can change codecs, add clips, change from 1080p to 720p or adjust whatever setting for that sequence and everything works fine.  Now the problem arises when I create a new sequence and then add footage.  In that instance, no signal goes to my BM card.
If I was starting a new project and that's what I had to do to make sure new sequences went to the monitor, then I would be conscious of that.  But I already have 2 Premiere CC projects that I need to send to my monitor for color correction or for client previews and no matter what I do, I cannot get a signal to the monitor.  After Effects CC still won't go to the external monitor no matter what I try.  Final Cut Pro and CS6 are still working flawlessly.

  • Black Magic Intensity Pro/Shuttle. Anyone in the community using it?

In a couple days I will be purchasing the BMIP or BMIS and I was wondering if anyone in here is currently using it to record their game play. I have read about recording compressed and uncompressed in 720p and 1080i/p and that in doing so you will need a fast RPM HDD. I know for a fact that I have met the minimum system requirements based on what I will upgrading my system  to but my only concern was the HDD. I have an internal and external totaling up to at least 1.5TB of HDD space. Other forums I have read say that you need to set up the HDD to RAID 0 if and only your motherboard is capable of doing so. This is where I am stuck on because I have no idea what type my motherboard is.  My PC is an emachines EL1333G-03w model and their website doesn't say much. I will be upgrading the graphics card,PSU,and converting this slim line tower to a bigger tower so it can accommodate the more powerful PSU and GC. So if anyone knows what kind/type of motherboard I have I would  really appreciate it. I was also looking into getting a PCIE USB 3.0 card just in case I change my mind and go for the Intensity Shuttle instead, but again it depends on what kind of motherboard I have because if its not compatible then I can't use it. Lastly if you have any tips or tricks in regards to better recording experience with any of the two products please advise. I had a Hauppauge HD PVR in which it was connected via HDMI>HDMI Splitter>HDMI to component>HD PVR>USB>PC.  Set up was just overwhelming with wires and cables. All that  just so I can connect it to my monitor ( No Component inputs ). Quality was fair and recording was simple but I just wanted less wires ,cables, etc to reduce clutter.

  • Black Magic intensity pro

    Hi
I am cosidering this card for HDMI output, and was wondering if anyone had any experience with this card.
    Thanks in advance.
    Ulf

I got the test card yesterday and just installed it with the latest drivers from the web.
It seems to function just fine in the X79 based Asus PX79 Pro board, put in the lowest PCIe slot.
Will do some more testing the next days, but so far it seems great
    /Ulf

  • Heads up - Black Magic Intensity Pro drivers 1.84   7/05/08

Latest version 1.84 did not work for me with Premiere Pro CS3.
Reverted to 1.8 and they are fine (although I am still unable to get them to work with AEFX at all). Work o.k with PhotoShop CS3

  • DVD SP, Intensity Pro Card, No External Monitor.

I have a Black Magic Intensity Pro card that outputs fine with FCP. The DVDSP documentation says that it supports external monitoring but there is no selection option available in the playback or simulation preferences in the pulldown menu. Has anyone had any success with DVDSP and external monitoring?

    DVD SP Preferences/Simulator Tab/Playback Ouput/Video.
There is a drop down menu for the Simulator window.
Your device, if it is to show up, will show up there.
