Black screen for 45 secs before boot

Every time I start my computer, either cold start or a reboot, it takes 15 seconds before I hear the chime, and then it takes another 45 seconds before the grey screen with the Apple logo comes up. At about 43 seconds I hear the fan for my video card turn on. Once it's past that point, everything continues as normal.
I've only been noticing this for the last week. Perhaps that is because I just started using Boot Camp last week. Before that I only restarted for software updates, but I'm pretty sure this problem is new.
Here is what I've tried: repaired permissions on my boot drive; pulled each of my three hard drives from the tower, one at a time; reset PRAM; reset SMC; reinstalled factory memory.
None of these changed anything. Any ideas? I'm assuming it's a hardware problem since pulling the drives didn't change anything. Windows is on a different drive from the Mac OS, so I would think that if it was something with one of the drives, pulling them would have fixed the problem.

Have you tried running the apple hardware test, this should tell you if you have any issues with the actual hard drives themselves. Also diskwarrior to see if there's anything gone wrong with the OS.

  • P965 Platimum shut down for 2 sec before booting

    Hi hi,
    I noticed a strange problem...
My P965 Plat board will shut down for 2 - 3 sec before booting up window. Meaning, when you pressed the power button to start the PC, the fan will turn for 1 sec then everything stop for awhile and after 2 sec everything back to normal to boot the window.
Have anyone encounted this problem before. Apart from this everything is ok after the boot up.
    My build is:
    C2D E6400
    P965 Platimum
    2 GB 667Mhz RAM
    250 GB of HDD
    XpertVision 7600GS DDR3
    Artic cooler pro 7

I would like to know what is going on with this problem
Yesterday i assembled my new system
    P965 Platinum
    e6600
    2 GB 800
    2 HDD
    1 DVDRW
    7600gt
    1 floppy
    PSU HEC Windmill 385 18A/12V
When i switched on the system i noticed this peculiar behavior and then when the boot screen came up my floppy got fire.(we are talking a lot of smoke and the wire sheathing got melted for about 10cm from the floppy.
I have a suspicion that the floppy short circuited because the pin somehow managed to clip incorrectly although i am not sure because i have done it about 1 million times ( i am a technician and i have assembled a zillion machines) ,probably the floppy input has broken and the floppy power pin slipped.
I very much concerned if this is a grounding issue
I have checked the system afterwards with the same PSU and as far M/B CPU and memory seems to be OK (At least i got into BIOS and they seem to be in place .......one strange thing 800 MHZ ram (4-4-4-12) where shown in Cell menu as 533 MHZ does this mobo has detection problems ????????) ...but the strange switching on-off was there...
If there are groundings issues could these related to the fact that i have used for the first time plastic washer on the screws that screw on the standoffs
    I am going to purchase a new 400W enermax liberty ( 12 V1 ->20a , 12 V2 -> 20A ,Combined 30A....my wife is going to kill me.....   )
But if grounding is the issue i have to be certain that it wont kill something more expensive....:(
i am going to try to remove the washers but if this fail i don't know what i would do.....

  • Black screen on system start, before boot.

This machine had a noisy cooling fan for some time, then the screen suddenly went black but could see very dimmed images on it when using a flashlight.
Now the fan is quiet, but working and cooling, however the screen is entirely black after power up, the ESC to enter menu appears in orange color, then nothing at all. When pressing escape, it also goes entirely black. Can see the hard drive light flashing and have removed the drive to check it externally. The drive is fine. Different RAM makes no difference.
Is the graphics chip damaged and if so, can it be replaced in the Philippines at a service center?
    Thanks.

  • Black Screen after W7 logo before login screen - HELP!

    Hi,
When I start windows, after Windows 7 start logo, I get a black screen for about 20-40
seconds, then a black screen with cursor for around 1 and a half minute and then I get the login screen, thats around after 3minutes.
I am facing this problem for quite some time now, I also did a clean windows installation
after wiping out harddisk using diskpart. But it was of no use, still I get that annoying Black Screen at startup and I think my laptop is a bit slow too. When
I open windows in safe mode, I get the Black screen there too but for like 35-45 seconds.
I also ran Dell PC Checkup, everything is fine.
I'd be really grateful if someone helps me find out what exactly is wrong with my laptop
and how can I get rid of this black screen, thanks!

I am unable to turn on the voice over function on Iphone 4.  The meesage appears informing me of what the functions does, I press ok and the the message stays on the screen for 30 secs or so and then it automatically turns the voice over function "off" - why???? what am I doing wrong?

I just had this same issue. It occured after I joined my school's Wi-Fi. Suddenly, my home ATV2 and iPhone4 weren't on speaking terms. All five other iphones, ipads, and macs were operating as they should. My phone was not. I tried everything: unplugging and restarting ATV2, deauthorizing all my devices and reauthorizing them, deleting and reinstalling remote app, and countless home sharing on and offs on all devices. Finally, I turned the Wi-Fi off and then on in the setting of my iphone. Boom. Situation remedied. I hope this helps.

  • Is black screen for iPhone hardware or software problem

Is black screen for iPhone hardware or software problem.

Don't know until you troubleshoot. First step is a reset:
hold down the home button along with the sleep/wake button until the screen goes black and you see the Apple, then let go. (No data loss)

  • YouTube loads black screen for first five seconds

Starting early January 2013 in Firefox, YouTube videos are loaded as blank black screens for the first five seconds. At the 0:06 mark, videos start playing normally. This is not an issue in Chrome or IE. Tested with all plug-ins and add-ons disabled (except Flash player). Plug-ins/add-ons updated. Tried re-installing Firefox with no solution. Help? Thanks!

You can check for problems caused by recent Flash updates and try these:
*disable a possible RealPlayer Browser Record Plugin extension for Firefox and update the RealPlayer if installed
*disable protected mode in Flash 11.3 and later
*disable hardware acceleration in the Flash plugin

  • VMware View Session go Black screen for some seconds

    Hi Guys,
Recently one of my client is facing issues that VDI Desktop session is going black screen for few seconds and automatically session comes back. I have increased PCoIP Configure the PCoIP session Bandwidth floor to 200. still facing same issue.
Note : All user facing this issue is in branches and we have 2 GBps pipeline Datacenter to Branches. Normally 40% is the network utilization.

Sorry, I was thinking the APEX 2800 cards were related to this, but that was a different ticket I was thinking of.  So scratch that.
As far as this problem goes, I have seen this issue happen numerous times.  It only happens with users with dual monitors.  Here's a workaround: Control Panel > Mouse > Pointers > Scheme > Select a non Aero scheme
It took VMware quite a few months, but they finally generated a KB for it and closed my ticket: VMware KB: Zero client monitors will randomly go black for 1-2 seconds

  • Black screen with white texts before Windows start in Boot Camp

I just bought my Macbook 13" and installed Windows Vista in Boot Camp. Everything went fine, Windows run seamlessly with the native speed that's said. My only problem is when I start Windows, it goes through a black screen first with a lot of white texts. One is the message "Unrecognized partition table drive 80. Please rebuild using Microsoft Fdisk Tool." Among others, this message repeats a number of times before Windows start. I don't have any problem after that, except that it delay the start up. I have tried to change a lot of settings that is associated with start up, so far nothing work. Can somebody out there help.

Highlight the phrase and add "Mac" to it, and do a look-up in Google.
"Unrecognized partition table drive 80. Please rebuild using Microsoft Fdisk Tool."
That error is listed on other threads and Microsoft, just easier to find and link thru Google than Apple forum search.
Hopefully that will help. But I would boot from Vista DVD and go through the automatic system repair too.

  • (Mid-2009 MacBook Pro) Black screen on windows 7 disk boot up

Just tried to boot up from a windows 7 install disk, but I just got a black screen. Nothing else happened. Tried using an xp and vista disk also, but they both produced the same results. I've installed windows plenty of times from this computer before, but for some reason this time it decided not to work.
    Any suggestions?

The only other relevant Support document is this one: If your Mac won't turn on - Apple Support but if your Caps Lock LED illuminates when you press it then your Mac is not completely dead. Technically, it turns on, even though it appears to do nothing else. In that case Apple refers you to the following document: Troubleshooting: My computer has no video but I doubt it will help because you cannot even get your Mac to start.
You will need to obtain the System Install DVD as I wrote, so that you can start the Mac, load an operating system, and format the SSD so that OS X can be installed. You might need to remove the SSD and install a conventional hard disk drive instead, at least until you can get the Mac working to the point you can install an operating system.

  • Mac Pro 3,1 Stuck on Grey screen for 1 min during boot

I have a Late 2008 Mac Pro 3,1 and have started experiencing a very slow boot up.   The computer gets stuck for over a minute on the initial gray screen after the first boot chime.  Once the apple logo finally appears the boot goes normally.  Once running it seems OK.  The shut down seems normal with a  grey screen for a few seconds with the "clock" logo.
    Symptom:
After the chime I see a blank gray screen for in excess of 1 minute, it used to last only a couple of seconds.
Once the dark grey Apple logo appears the boot goes at normal speed
I have a number of different hard drives with older systems and booting from each of then gives the problem - so it does not seem to be system/disc related
Two partitions (Mavericks and ML) are on SSD's installed on a Sonnet PCIe Card and showed the same problem as the spinning hard discs.
I tried: (following a trawl of the bb's etc)
I repaired permissions and repaired all discs for all my boot partitions (10.5, 10.6, 10.7, 10.8 and 10.9) using the appropriate Disc Utility
Zapping the Pram - this was very strange as I had to keep the cmd alt P R held down for around a minute before the second chime occurred, the time of the grey screen stays stuck
    Resetting the SMC
Booting in Verbose Safe Mode: Again I had to hold the Alt V down for a minute on the gray screen before the screen went black and the text appeared
I looked on the console log but could see nothing obvious, additionally from the verbose safe mode boot the text log seems to start from when the grey screen disappears. The time stamps show the boot finishing in well under the minute I wait.
Any suggestions you may have are very welcome.
    Regards
    Dave

Thanks The Hatter for that information.  The blank gray screen is now lasting 3 mins before the Apple appears.  When I restarted the system log is as below.  As  you can see there is just over a three minute gap between the shut down and the boot, indicating to me that it is not something in the system software after the boot but a problem at the very start.  It does look like it could be something to do with the hardware as you suggest.  I have verified all the discs with the disc utility and they report as OK and their SMART status is also OK.  I have disconnected the external drives with no change so I will now have to do a thorough check and systematically remove the internal ones but that will have to wait for the weekend.
I have Mavericks on the Samsung 840 Pro and ML on a Crucial SSD (Crucial_CT240M500SSD1 Media) on a PCIe card.  The Mavericks install I think was an upgrade, not a clean install done quite a while ago.  I only noticed the problem this week when I re-booted in an ML to run some software not compatible with Mavericks.  I have made a system back up as a precaution to an external disc just in case my main drive is dying!
There are some firmware updates for both the SSD discs that I have not applied these yet but I will leave them out of the mix until I have tried simplifying my configuration with a single disc.

  • WORK AROUND: Black screen/flashing cursor trying to boot windows cd

This refers to the black screen with flashing underline cursor in the top left corner problem that happens after using bootcamp to setup your partition & then rebooting with the windows install CD in the driver. Install never starts, you just get this black screen with flashing cursor. seems to affect many different types of macs attempting to boot both XP & Vista.
I tried rebooting about 10 times. No luck. Same problem. Tried running disk verify/repair after removing partition, no luck. Remade boot camp partition, no luck.
Finally I pointed Parallels (free trial available) to my blank bootcamp partition and set parallels to boot from CD before HD. Parallels booted the Vista install CD just fine, and put Vista on my HD. Crashed at the end though and said it couldn't make the boot camp partition bootable so all changes were removed. Rebooted under boot camp and the installer came up fine off the CD. I'm now running vista (SP1 even) under bootcamp just fine. Parallels just lets you get past that boot-up bug.
So if you have this problem, and nobody else can help, and if you can find it, maybe you can download..... Parallels.
Feel free to post this on the other threads. Unlike other workarounds I'm guessing this will work for everyone and it only takes a free trial download of parallels to give it a try. Just remember to setup the virtual machine to use the bootcamp partition as the target drive, and then go under the edit virtual machine, then OPTIONS, then BOOT tab and set it to boot from cd before HD. Switch it back when you are done.
Then run boot camp assistant again and select the install OS option. Should run the installer correctly (thus overwriting anything parallels put on the partition).
I think VMWare Fusion also supports vitualization with the bootcamp partition as the target so that may help you get around this problem.

I have resolved this issue for four of our iMac computers with either of the following solutions. I realize that these solutions might seem awkward, but these solutions have been the only solutions that have successfully resolved this same issue for four different machines.
    Solution 1
On the Mac OS partition, leave the Boot Camp partition that has yet to be configured.
Leave the Windows install disk in the optical drive.
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug all cables.
Hold the power button for a minimum of 5 seconds.
    Plug in all cables.
    Turn the power on.
The computer will proceed to install Windows.
Solution 2 (If Solution 1 fails)
On the Mac OS partition, leave the Boot Camp partition that has yet to be configured.
Remove the Windows install disk from the optical drive.
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug all cables.
Hold the power button for a minimum of 5 seconds.
    Plug in all cables.
    Turn the power on.
A black screen will appear prompting for a bootable disk.
    Load the Windows install disk.
Shut down the computer by holding the power button.
    Turn on the computer.
The computer will proceed to install Windows.

  • Black Screen following install, can't boot back into Lion

    Hi all,
I just tried to install Windows 7 Ultimate 64 via Bootcamp on my Late 2010 iMac (21").
Following installation (it completed installation fine) right before the part where the dialogue says 'Setting up your computer for the first time', the screen goes black and nothing appears to be happening.
I cannot boot back into Lion by holding Alt- it does nothing.
Holding C to boot from disk keeps brigning me to the same Windows Error Recovery screen where I am prompted to 'Start Windows Normally' or in the various Safe Modes.
Trying to start it normally results in this hanging black screen, trying to start it in safe mode results in a dialogue saying 'Setup cannot be completed in Safe Mode' and restarts the computer.
Obviously this is quite a tricky situation, I'd appreciate any help to make some part of my Mac usable again,
Thanks in advance for any input.
    tl;dr:
    Can't boot into Lion
Any action available to me in Windows results in the same loop of black screen hanging.
I'm not even sure where I can go to try and change any settings...

Reboot, hold the option key down when you hear the chime, release it when the boot manager appears. Select OSX as the startup. Once started go to Apple>System Preferences>Startup Disk and make OSX the permanent choice until you get the Winjunk running, even better, remove the Winjunk partition and stay in the light.
You might find it useful to read this, all kinds of basic information regarding OSX, no need to not know what to do next.

  • R5450-MD1GD3H/LP: Black Screen, endless reboots & No OS Boot

As written elsewhere (https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=159633.0), I have had strange problems about AHCI driver installation ..
    ..well,
I fix them in safe mode, but , I had a problem installing the catalyst drivers (fail message info by same CCC installer),
and the next reboot .. here is only black screen!
..the fans start spinning, but there is no boot of the OS!
The Mobo is a MSI P45 memory lover (no onboard VGA)
I tried using a MSI hd6450 and the system works ..
I tried the HD5450 on other platforms (775 and 1155), and the system does not work (even the onboard VGA is on at startup, if the 5450 present)
I think with the many reboots, CMOS reset, safe mode, system restore by Windows CD, the video card has a few voltage peak, or the drivers were not installed well have generated the fault.
I know that before it stop work, the video card was very hot on the big passive heatsink, because I feel it whit my finger (which is less than the hd6450 that I put after, because I feel it too)
    then I ask you:
Do you think that the card is finally dead?
there is a chance for me to flash the original bios (on itself) with the MSI Radeon in these conditions?
    thanks
    max

Yesterday I have not had time to do the screen Ati flash, but will do it tomorrow ..
     Today however I decided to buy a new fanless R5450 1Gb ddr3 ..
the model is slightly different than the previous, above the sink is no longer as big as that of the previous VGA that has failed ...
     now,
I do not remember the average temperature of the working of the old VGA,
with an outside temperature of 37 degrees, the house will be nearly 30 degrees, do you think that is normal to have a temperature of 50 degrees on the new R5450?
Whereas, ..-as seen in images-that the CPU daily, (L3110 from a 45Watt tdp) remains at 31 degrees with a heat sink CM Geminii
I'm also thinking that the MSI P45 memory lover (which I bought on ebay germany USED)
may have some problems with the voltage phases of PCI-ex, and whether it was the cause of the failure of the previous video card..
    (P. S. what section of the forum I can present the Worklog of my projects with MSI boards?)
