Black screen on macbook pro 13in 2011

A few weeks ago my screen went black while I was having a web cam chat with my wife. I was able to hook it up to my flat screen TV and it is working fine but not on my main apple disply screen. The apple icon on the back isn't lighting up and I can see shadows on my screen now after I did a PRM reset. Everything is working the way it should just not the screen. I'm living in China so my options are limited to where I can go to get it fix. I don't want anyone telling me its the mother board when I know it isn't (as I was told before along with a very high price for a new one).
Can anyone help me with a self repair option?
Thanks.

That helped me finding other people with similar problems.
But there is a major difference!
-They have a black screen after they login.
-My screen is black NOW! And I'm only using my BRAND NEW rmbp with the HDMI cable to my TV!
This isnt good at all and I would like to solve it asap..
I tried reinstalling Mountain Lion, taking out the hdmi cable and rebooting many times.
Until now, nothing!
Is my screen broken or maybe my video card has some problems?
I hope not! I just traveled from the US to Brazil and I dont want to search for an Apple Store here.
Any tips or ideas are welcome, thank you.

  • Macbook Pro 13in 2011 Boot up

    Hello,
So, for some reason whenever I turn my Macbook Pro 13in 2011 on, the normal white screen appears with the Apple logo and the little loading wheel, but this time a gray bar appears loading on the bottom of the wheel, could someone please explain what is happening, this is making my laptop load up very slowly. I'm scared I might lose everything.
Thanks, please get back to me,

The following support article is somewhat outdated. Where it refers to booting from an installation disc, you should boot from your recovery partition (if running 10.7 or later) by holding down the key combination command-R at the chime.

  • Sudden black screen on Macbook Pro.

    Hi everyone,
Occasionally when using my macbook pro the screen turns black, yet the macbook appears to be still running (keyboard lighting is still on and the notebook makes its usual sounds). This happens like once a week on a random occasion, but always seems to follow an action (last time the screen went black after emptying my iPhoto trash can). To activate my macbook i always have to manually shut down and reboot.
I use a Macbook Pro purchased in 2010, with mac OS X Lion installed. This sudden black screen problem did not occur before installing Lion.
Does anyone else experience this problem? And any suggestions on solving it?
    Kind regards,
    Tom

I have the following failure since updating the EFI firmaware in my Macbook Pro 13" 2011:

I´ve been asking Apple for about a month to fix it under warranty but no answer so far, they say tha the error cannot be repoduced at the store so I sent the video to them, still waiting for an answer.

  • Black Screen on MacBook Pro Early 2008

    Hey guys,
i have a problem. My MacBook Pro Early 2008 doesnt boot anymore. If i press the power button the screen remains black and the hdd spins a few seconds and you can hear the superdrive make a short noise. But nothing more happens.
I know from the nVidia 8600m GT issue and i even have the modelnumber A1260 but the apple reseller told me that if there comes no start sound , it is not that problem. My question is: is it possible that the (probably) defect 8600m gt chip on my logicboard has caused a defect of the whole logicboard ? I heard from a guy whos board was repaired for free but its PowerManagment Unit on the logicboard was defect but the Technical guy told him , that it was caused by the nvdia chip and so it was repaired for free. How can i find out if my chip was the reason for the defect ?
Iam not a native speaker and i hope you can understand what iam trying to say iam happy for every correction and help.
    greets
    max

"How can i find out if my chip was the reason for the defect ?"
By having it examined by a certified Apple technician. If necessary, show the tech the KB Article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377 MacBook Pro: Distorted video or no video issues
"apple reseller told me that if there comes *no start sound* , it is not that problem."
You do not have a start sound?
Have you tried starting up from your install DVD?
If you have AppleCare, strongly suggest that you contact them first.

Are there any drivers i should install to get image back on my MacBook Pro Retina Display?

  • Multiple kernel panics & black screen on Macbook Pro Retina early 2013

My Macbook Pro Retina (early 2013, 8GB ram, 250 GB hard drive) has been experiencing multiple kernel panics forcing rapid-fire restarts of the computer multiple times within a very short time frame. This is followed by the screen staying black even if the computer is on (keyboard lit up, can hear volume buttons) but nothing is on the screen. Once the screen goes black, I have to employ some combination of manually shutting it down (by holding down the power button) and then turning it back on (+/- doing an SMC reset) to get the screen working again. I also tried a PRAM reset once, but it didn't seem to have any effect, and I've repaired the disk permissions.
This issue has happened multiple times in the past week. It seems to vary as to how long it takes to happen again (could be a few days, could be less than an hour), and it has happened during multiple different activities (surfing the web, using Word, using Mail). I have experienced this both on Mavericks and after updating to Yosemite over the weekend.
I took it to the Apple Store on Saturday and while the Genius saw that the screen was black when I initially brought it in (even though the computer was on), we couldn't recreate the issue and the diagnostic tests he ran showed nothing. It even started back up fine for him. I thought I was OK, until I had another round of kernel panics + black screen this afternoon. At this point, doing a normal restart of the machine results in a kernel panic before it even makes it off of the loading screen and then a black screen.
This time, I checked the logs and saw the panic report included below. I don't know enough about this to understand what it means, but hopefully someone else does! Some internet searching has suggested that it might be a problem with the GPU (and the log below says GPU panic). Help, please!

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider. You may have to leave the machine there for several days.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.

  • Black screen on MacBook Pro running 10.6.8

Zapping PRAM, safe reboot, battery removal -- no help. Ideas? Have been using external monitor for about a year since hinge broke and ate the screen in the process. Right now external monitor does give me a "no signal" message at shutdown so I know it's working. Thanks.

Boot disk on USB Thumb drive - Augusta Maine
    Apr 28, 2014 7:06 PM
    I have a mid 2010 15" MBP i5 with 8 gigs of ram running Snow Leopard 10.6.8
Three times in two months it crashes to black screen and the only way back it a hard (power button - off) restart.  Then it works fine. I have to pay more attention as to what I was doing at the time, but in all three cases I was actively using the keyboard.  I do not have any video games on this laptop. I can't say for sure, but I am thinking it happens when I execute something new, today it happened when using Chrome.  I either just launched it, or more likely it crashed when I hit RETURN to initiate a search.
I captured all three error reports, the beginning of each are as follows.  Any and all sggestions are appreciated. And if MAINE ISLANDER is reading this, I have a Snow Leopard bood disk on thumb drive that you can borrow if in the Augusta area.

  • Black screen on Macbook Pro 2014

The screen on my MacBook Pro retina 2014 stays black for 20-30 seconds (with the cursor visible) when i activate it after it has been deactivated while not using the computer for a while. Why does it stay black?

I think there isn't a real problem at 2ºC but that is a bit cold. It could affect the hardware. If the problem persists inside at room temp, them take it in for service since it is in warranty.

  • Upgrade to Lion Causes Black Screen On MacBook Pro

I read early discussion posts on this topic and thought by now Apple would have corrected this poblem but apparently not.  I updgraded my MacBook Pro last night to Lion and since last evening I have had 5 black screen (failures) and had to power off and reboot.  Is there a known correction or update to this problem?  It is extremely disappointing as I need my Mac for my business and cannot afford to send it to a depot for a five day repair.
This same problem was happening to me with an older OS but ONLY when I used both PowerPoint and Parallels at the same time.  For this probem I took the MacBook into the Genius Bar and had to leave it there through the weekend and all day Monday.  They told me after running multiple tests they found no hardware problems and the issue had to be software.  The only fix was a five day depot repair.  I thought I would manage by not using PowerPoint and Parallels together but now, with the Lion Upgrade it happens with ALL apps and when I simply try to read an email.  Very, Very DISAPPOINTING.  COME ON APPLE, DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS.  PLEASE.

Lion has been causing a lot of problems on older hardware, it killed a 4 year old 15" MBP on me.
Go back to 10.6, the stability of your business comes first.

  • Black screen after MacBook Pro wakes from sleep; reason, solution?

    Greetings!
I have 2 MacBook Pro machines; both are running the latest versions of OSX for their age.
The 2 GHz Core Duo is using 10.6.8 (2GB RAM) and 2.5 GHz Duo Core 2 is using the 10.7.x (4GB RAM).
Both are routinely used with external monitors. Every so often when either of the machines are put to sleep, the external monitor disconnected, and finally when the machine is woken, the native screen remains black and unlit. If the machine is connected to the external monitor, it shows its appropriate desktop but the finder bar is unavaible so nothing can be done short of forced shut down and a reboot.
Am I forgetting some simple short cuts (key-bases) to bring the native screen to life or is forced shut-down really necessary?

I put my macbook pro early 2011 (Quad, 8 Gb RAM, 2 x SSD-disks, external 27" LED-screen) into sleep mode a couple of days ago. Everything was fine then.
However, the morning after it wouldn't wake up - this is the bootup process:
    - Black screen
    - Chime
    - Still black screen, nothing happens.
So I've tried resetting NVRAM, SMC etc - no luck. Even tried the "Powerbutton" + "S" + Enter but to no avail. So I immediately began dd:ing my SSD-disk before trying anything else, figured it might be some preboot-corruption of some sort since I'm running FileVault2 with full AES-encryption.
Now, the problem (after some troubleshooting) doesn't seem to be disk-oriented. Remember the black screen? I've tried pulling the SATA-cables one by one on the motherboard of the Macbook pro and discovered that when I pulled the cable which reaches over the optical device (just above the SATA-cable for the optical device) then I get a white screen and I'm able to get as far as boot-option, or even disk repair (if I run my SSD-disk over USB and without any cables (three of them) attacked to the motherboard).
So since nothing works when I have disks connected or that third cable (some kind of logic board bridge? Reaches through the screen over to the other side of the mother board).
Also worth noting is that I was running out of free disk-space on my system disk. The disk is 250 Gb and free space was about 5-10 Gb (less than 5%). I also make the macbook pro dump contents of memory to disk (since my disk is encrypted it resides safely there).
So, my fear is that Apple hasn't used A-grade controllers for the disk drives (I've had drive corruption before, a Crucial 6 GB/s drive trashed less than a week before a presentation) and doesn't handle "unexpected events" nor signal/noise ratio very well. Maybe free space on disk was less than the 8 Gb needed to dump RAM (shouldn't have needed the full 8 Gb though) and this caused some kind of panic overwrite which trashed the controller?
Anyways, I've attached an image of the motherboard and I am wondering - what does the top cable which reaches over the optical drive do? Is it connected to the logic-board?

Looks to me like a fatal error on the hard disk. IMHO, the only solution is to boot from an external device, reformat the hard drive, and restore from backup. If you don't have a backup, you're in trouble. Boot from the external device, try to mount the int'l drive, and, if successful, back up as much as possible. Also, try running Disk Utility—it may be possible to fix it while booted from a different device, thought I wouldn't bank on it. At any rate, make sure to run an AHT afterwards, to check for possible hardware issues with the drive.
If the machine is still covered by AppleCare, take it to the store by all means. But they won't try to recover anything from the int'l drive, just check it, erase it if they don't find hardware issues, and re-install a fresh copy of the OS.
That's why you should always have at least 1 up-to-date backup (2, with one kept off-site, is better).

  • MacBook Pro late 2011 screen goes blank and needs shutdown and superdrive spins 3 times before ejecting discs

    Hi everyone,
I have a big problem with my MacBook Pro late 2011, suddenly while working without connecting the charger and it is 100% charged the screen would go black and I would need to hold the power button to shut it down and then power it up again, The second issue is the superdrive whenever I use a disc it spins it for 3 times before ejecting it to me, tried resetting PRAM and tried re-installing mac os x mavericks, but no solution so far and about the superdrive I bought a cleaner disc and tried to insert it, the superdrive would spin it 3 times and ejects it after that. Saw the disk permission solution and tried it once and I think there is a problem with that because this is the second time I try it and it was saying that there were problems.
    Sorry for being long.
    Thanks in advance.

Depending on what you are doing on the computer, how hard you are working the computer, it should not overheat. And if it does it should shut down or get very slow because when it starts to overheat the CPU will be throttled back to a lower Ghz speed and or just shut down so it doesn't cause damage to the CPU. The Kernel Panics are a sign that something else is going on. This could be software or hardware.
If after wiping the drives and reinstall Lion on the SSD if the system is running OK then the drives are fine, IE they are not bad. There is something else corrupting them. Again this could be hardware or software, but I doubt it is heat. And using the MBP ion clamshell mode should not cause overheating or excessive heating of either of the drives.
Have you installed iStat Pro or Menu and kept and eye on the temps? If not install iStat Pro and keep and eye on the temps. I bet they do not get above the 150°- 180°F mark which although hot is not overheating.
Be very careful when calling Apple. Removing the DVD drive and installing a hard drive in that bay could void your warranty. The DVD is not a User Removable part and Apple frowns on doing that. So if you call them do not mention that you have replaced the DVD drive with another HDD.
Honestly I suspect you have a hardware problem. But the only way to know that is to install just Lion and your basic programs and run the system. Leave out any AV type software, if you are running some. If you don't get any kernel panics thenn install some of your other software, one programm at a time. If with just the OS and basic software you get a kernel panic then it is hardware related and needs to be checked out by Apple. If you do that re-install the DVD and the original HDD with just the OS on it before you take it in.

I checked my on screen keyboard (OSK) in windows and its different from my physical keyboard i.e. keys are different on my physical keyboard compared to OSK. Can anyone help me?
    Thanks

Can I suggest the following articles, which are worth reviewing?
Boot Camp: About keyboards and key assignment for Microsoft Windows - Apple Support
Boot Camp: Apple Wireless Keyboard keyboard mapping in Windows - Apple Support
Boot Camp: Windows commands on an Apple keyboard
Windows does require language packs to be installed, if you want the physical keyboard to match the on-screen keyboard.

  • I was installing soundflower macbook pro mid 2011/Snow leopard Grey loading screen

Hello i was installing soundflower for my macbook pro mid 2011/Snow leopard. However when finishing the installation for soundflower and click restart computer my mac now has a grey screen with a loading bar that doesn't finish. I already try safe mode and it doesn't work. Is there a way to disable sound flower installation?

No. You use "C" to boot from the optical drive
Hold down the Option key to select a different disk drive to boot from
When it comes up with all the disk that have an operating system on them, select the one with the bootable clone on it

  • Just upgraded to OSX mavericks on macbook pro mid 2011 version. Having a big issue here that whenever my mac comes back from sleep, i.e after I open the lid, the screen flickers and there is an error of Finder not opening properly. Any fix to this?

Just upgraded to OSX 10.9 mavericks on macbook pro mid 2011 version. Having a big issue here that whenever my mac comes back from sleep, i.e after I open the lid, the screen flickers and there is an error of Finder not opening properly. Any fix to this?

My daughter has had her Razr for about 9 months now.  About two weeks ago she picked up her phone in the morning on her way to school when she noticed two cracks, both starting at the camera lens. One goes completely to the bottom and the other goes sharply to the side. She has never dropped it and me and my husband went over it with a fine tooth comb. We looked under a magnifying glass and could no find any reason for the glass to crack. Not one ding, scratch or bang. Our daughter really takes good care of her stuff, but we still wanted to make sure before we sent it in for repairs. Well we did and we got a reply from Motorola with a picture of the cracks saying this was customer abuse and that it is not covered under warranty. Even though they did not find any physical damage to back it up. Well I e-mailed them back and told them I did a little research and found pages of people having the same problems. Well I did not hear from them until I received a notice from Fed Ex that they were sending the phone back. NOT FIXED!!! I went to look up why and guess what there is no case open any more for the phone. It has been wiped clean. I put in the RMA # it comes back not found, I put in the ID #, the SN# and all comes back not found. Yet a day earlier all the info was there. I know there is a lot more people like me and all of you, but they just don't want to be bothered so they pay to have it fix, just to have it do it again. Unless they have found the problem and only fixing it on a customer pay only set up. I am furious and will not be recommending this phone to anyone. And to think I was considering this phone for my next up grade! NOT!!!!
