Black SOD after Vista Updates on Satellite A205-S5804

I have a Satellite A205-S5804 laptop running Vista Home Premium. It ran fine until an automatic update (about a month ago). Then I got the Black Screen Of Death during bootup (somewhere after the Vista starts to load but prior to the user logon). Took it to the Geek Squad who says it isn't hardware related (as my extended warranty only covers hardware). They claimed it is a corrupted OS. I think they are correct about it not being hardware since I can get it to go to Safe Mode. Restore didn't work. I acquired a copy of Vista Home Premium and attempted to run repair but that didn't correct the problem. Next I reloaded it. Everything ran great like it is suppposed to. But the automatic update downloaded and installed the 92 or so Vista updates that it supposedly needs since the Vista disk was produced. Now the problem is back. I can get to Safe Mode, into the BIOS and just about everything else except I cannot get it to boot normally without black-screening before the login to user prompt. I have hooked an external monitor up and when the laptop blacks out the external monitor reports no signal. I suspect there is an issue with a Vista update (which one I do not know). I have already backed up the data I want to save and have that on another computer. Any suggestions other than to reload Vista and not ever acquire any updates? Is there a setting in the BIOS or a "fix" to the Vista update? I tried searching for hours on this issue and have not found a solution. Thanks for any help or suggestions from other Toshiba users.

 Restore didn't work.
What does that mean?
It means that when I selected an earlier restore point (prior to when I suspect the Vista update downloaded and installed) the black screen issue remained. At none of my restore points could I get the issue to go away or resolve itself.
I tried the Toshiba restore to out of the box, or at least I wanted to, however, following the manual instructions the laptop did not give me that option. I held down the 0 (zero) button and powered it on but it did not go into the Hard Drive Recovery mode. I suspect my model is not one of the ones that came with this option.
So, after taking the laptop to the Geek Squad originally after the problem appeared and verifying that I don't have a hardware problem and also trying the recommended methods for returning to a stable and fully functional computer, I purchased a legit copy of Vista Home Premium so that I could reload the operating system. Yes, I am realizing how much more difficult Vista is than XP. I have reloaded Vista from scratch. I registered the copy. I have downloaded and installed SP1. I am currently doing SP2. I am basically creating a clean machine with just an OS loaded. Once I am sure that it will function properly (no more blacking out) I will reload my programs and transfer my data back.
Tedious process...but it seems like my best option. And now that it is in progress there really isn't any point in trying anything else other than uninstalling any update(s) after I reach a stable point that may be causing the screen to black out. If and when I reach that point again I will visit Microsoft to see what assistance I can get for any Windows Updates that I can identify as being troublesome.
I really appreciate everyone's input and suggestions. I was hopeful that it would be something as simple as an outdated driver or something along those lines. However, as much as I have searched, I have not found anyone who has had the exact same problem and there doesn't seem to be an easy cure. I will keep you posted on my success or failure with the method I have chosen. Thanks again.

  • My early 2008 Macbook Pro is suffering from black screen after Yosemite update

My early 2008 Macbook Pro is suffering from black screen after Yosemite update. It ran beta 5 great but failed on restart after beta 6 install. There is no cursor but I can hear the HDD spooling up. I have tried booting in safe mode, PRAM reset and SMC reset but nothing works. After the first 5 days of every now and then trying to start it, it started fine. I used the machine all day with no problems, it had rolled back the install and was back on beta 5. I decided to try the update again, the same thing happened and it has stayed black for over a week now. It wont work with a monitor either. Help!

    Hello Adam,
I would try instead of installing the beta software, to install the official build of OS X Yosemite from the Mac App Store to see if that gets you passed the no video issue when updating the beta software.

Photo booth became black screen after Newpad updated to iOS 7

It is not a widespread issue that requires apple to come out with a fix, I have many ipads that were updated and have no issues.
I would suggest you back-up and restore your device, that can repair many issues if the original update was corrupted.

  • Satellite A205-S5804 won't boot.

My computer Satellite A205-S5804 won't boot.
It won't run on safe mode, and it won't run the system restore.
It remains black with a cursor, if anything at all.
How do I get my computer back on?

    Hi
Youve got a cursor which is flashing in the upper left corner?
In such case you should check of the HDD has been recognized by BIOS!
If the HDD is listed in BIOS then I would recommend checking the HDD using the drives fitness test:
    http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm
To run the drives fitness test you must download the appropriate creator or image and create a self-booting media.
    Check it!

  • Black screen after Mavericks update ?

    Hi everybody,
First of all, I want you to know that I'm French so I want to apologize for my potential mistakes
A few weeks ago, I updated Mavericks (because my mac told me to do that every single day .. ) on my Macbook Unibody bought in September 2010.
After that update, I had a black screen after the "Apple logo" and couldn't do anything. I went to a Genius Bar in Paris and the technician told me that the unique solution was to format the laptop. I decided to accept this because I needed my laptop for work. However, I lost all my data (documents, pictures ...)
Apparently, I'm not the only person in that case and the problem comes from Mavericks.
So I want to know if someone else is also in that case, and I think that it's unacceptable that Apple does not communicate about this.
    Thank you

Connect the MBP to a monitor.  If the monitor fails to produce an image, the GPU is suspect.  If the monitor produces an image, the display or the display connection is faulty.
    Ciao.

  • Black screen after BIOS update

    Hi there,
After updating BIOS with regular HP software (i forgot the name now), the computer shut down and from that moment when i turn it on the screen stays black (with computer apparently running). I read so many posts with similar problems and i tried few things but without success. I know that i am very close to solve the problem but from all the suggestions i am now simply confused. I would like to ask, if someone can guide me through step-by-step procedure, i figured out that i need to install a BIOS version on USB-stick, but exact details i am obviously missing.
I have HP Pavilion dv 6700 Entertainment PC and new HDD inside without HP_TOOLS on it.
    Thank you veeeeeryyyy much!

  • PSE6 crashing after Vista update

I had PSE6 open and last night I got a Microsoft update for Vista that automatically restarted my computer.  Now I can't open a psd without PSE6 crashing.   I can open a psd by right clicking on it and picking to open with PSE6, but I can't open it from the program itself.

Tried everything but the TWAIN (don't have anything like that attached and I'm not getting that error).  No change in the program crashing - with the PSE6 has stopped working error message.  I haven't changed anything on this computer for ages so I didn't try the plug-in troubleshooting either.  The only thing that changed was the Vista update.  I really don't want to call customer service and go through that.  I can open .jpgs and make psds so I'll wait for awhile and see if anyone else has this problem too...  I guess I could go back and remove whatever update Microsoft gave me last night as well...  And has anyone had any luck running Windows 7 with PSE6?  I've been thinking about upgrading to that...

  • Satellite L450 (PSLY0E) - black screen after BIOS update

It seems like I have "bricked" my laptop during a bios utdate gone bad...black screen, as suspected :o /
The laptop is a Toshiba satellite L450 (PSLY0E)
The new bios image is named "bwaa150a.rom"
Anyone knows if it is possible to recover the bios from flashdrive or floppy, using some sort of recovery toolfrom inside the bios chip? ...or something?
Anyone knows who is the manifacturer of this bios?
If I have to rename the bios image during a recovery, what shoult it be named?

Well, I've just brought my bios back to life... :)))
I used the "wincrisis" available from wincrisis.1.0.0.4
Basically I followed the instructions in the download above to create a recovery usb-flash.
Then downloaded the correct bios, renamed the "rom-file" to "BIOS.WPH", and copied it to the usb-flash.
Then I disconnected both the battery and the power connection cable on the bricked laptop.
While pushing down the "F-key" on the keyboard, I reconnected the power cable and powered on with the power button, holding down the "F-key" *all the way till the laptop powered down by itself* after 2-3 minuets.
Then, powered up the laptop normally...voil, running normally, with the newest bios... :)))

    >and i mean clear cmos in doing a short in something near to ram or change jumber ... like Desktop clear cmos
This is not possible for notebook boards
    >lol , i send it to a specialist one .... tell me my current BIOS ChIP got damage by flashing it and interrupted flashing procedure ...... is that true???
Could be possible that the ROM module is damaged but in most cases the usage of BIOS crisis disk could solve this issue and as far as I know the Toshiba authorized service provider would be able to do that.

  • HDD clicks after Bios update on Satellite A100

    Hi.
I just made a bios update to my Satellite A100 PSAA9, and after that I started to hear some clicks on the hard drive, from time to time. They do not occur very often, but I'd like to know why do they started!
The bios update was released in 26/11/2007.
Does anyone have the same problem??
    Thanks.

    This is the thing:
if this is the same that was happening in Ubuntu, the problem is that the heads of the disc are parking too much. They are stopping too much when they shouldn't. The noise, the clicks, are the heads stopping. This happens (I think) because the disk is shutting down.
This a good thing, if done in the right conditions. It saves energy. The problem is when the disks shut down when they shouldn't and too often. (the disks support only a determined amount of head parking, usually 600 000).
The last time I was in Vista, it seemed to me that the noise had disappeared. But then I eared it again. Still it seems to be less frequent.
    I don't know, maybe i'm being paranoid .... :(
I'm working in Ubuntu, and can't spend too much time in Vista. When I have time, I'll try to turn on Vista for a day or two, and watch for the S.M.A.R.T. diagnostics of the disk. Then I'll be sure of how many times the heads park, and it they are parking too much!
(sorry if the English is bad! )
    Thanks.

  • Black screen after login on my Satellite U500-1f5

After I logged into my laptop, the screen went blank like completely black with just the cursor showing.
I can start the task manager but nothing else. I tried safe mode and it worked fine.
This only occurred in normal mode. So, I had to do a system restore and it worked.
But I'm scared that i'll happen again.
Does anyone know why this happened and how to avoid and solve this problem?
    Thanks in advance!!!

    >So, I had to do a system restore and it worked.
    >But I'm scared that i'll happen again.
Who knows what happened here if the system restore worked properly, then this was definitely an software problem and software problems can happen due to some updates or compatibility issue between system and 3rd party software.
PS: What notebook and what system do you use?

  • Top Half Becomes Black Again, After Removing Update

Hi, I'm very unexperienced as I have just gotten into video editing so bear with me when I do not know what to do.
On a recent thread, the cause of the top half of the screen being black was do to a Microsoft update, which I had removed the other day and successfully fixed the problem.
However, after opening up the program (Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0) today I imported a new file into a new project which resulted in the top half being black again. Yes, my files are in WMV because I am just a YouTuber and the format suits my basic editing and filming just fine (I have seen many arguements about how 'dumb' it is to use this format) and that's what format my camera spits out. I have made sure that the update doesn't reoccur, but the issue is back. Help?

After the last update to Safari 5.1.7 (7534.57.2) web dialoge boxes are blacked out in google Sketchup Ver. 8. • Mov videos show black screen after latest update (idvd, iweb)

    Hi MacUsers,
I am facing a severe problem after updating my MacBook Pro (Mac OS X 10.6.8) with iDVD 7.1.2 and the iWeb Update. I opened a keynote'09 presentation and encountered that most videos do not show up or just show a black box. Then I tried to open the original mov videos with QuickTime Player 10 and 7 but also black screen. Everything worked perfectly before the update. Any ideas how to solve the problem? It is urgent because I have to give a presentation tomorrow. By the way, using VLC works fine, but this does not help me with keynote. Thanks for any answers.

Here is a comparable problem described in an older thread:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2259769
It seems that there is still a problem with QuickTime. All other players such as MplayerX, VLC or mediAvatar can handle the mov videos (Apple Motion Jpeg A). Is there a solution?
