Black thumbnails and negative images after import
I'm experiencing a problem with iPhoto 6 and some images importing with black thumbnails and negative main images.
I've tried replacing the sRGB Profile.icc (it wasn't missing for me), but that didn't work.
Any suggestions?
1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo Mac OS X (10.4.5)
Are those negative images B/W photos? If so they may be Grayscale mode. Download the "Embed sRGB Profile" Automator application form Toad's Cellar and drop the original files for those photos onto it. If it's a grayscale mode file it will correct the situation. iPhoto 6 does not play well with Grayscale images.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

Aperture constantly rebuilds same thumbnails and preview images.
What is behind Aperture 2's pathological obsession with constantly rebuilding the same thumbnails and preview images, and is there any way to stop it? I can't link this performance killing problem to any specific action on my part; I see it in many different circumstances. For example:
(1) Putting the system to sleep while Aperture is open then resuming later
(2) Hiding the Aperture app, working on other memory consuming apps for a while (e.g. Photoshop), then returning to Aperture
(3) Switching from one project to another via the "Projects" tab.
(4) Quitting Aperture then restarting it.
I can say with 100% certainty that this is not the result of some previous thumbnailing/preview generation operation that was interrupted. The # of images in the project doesn't seem to have a bearing. Nor does the type of camera or image type I've imported from the camera.
I can be happily working in Aperture, working with a project created months ago, when all of a sudden the "generating thumbnails" message and the dreaded Wait Cursor appear and my speedy, well-apportioned iMac grinds to a total halt while Aperture does the same ** thing it's already completed before.
The only hit I get when searching Apple's support site mentions a known bug for those who upgraded from Aperture 1 to version 2 but definitely does not apply to me here.Thank you for the reply Tony. I've followed your suggestion but Aperture continues to (apparently) randomly decide to regenerate thumbnails and previews.
The problem has become bad enough that I've had to stop using Aperture completely.
Doesn't anybody from Apple read these forums? I can't possibly be the only Aperture user in the world to experience this problem... -
Web Gallery - need file name on thumbnail and large image
I think I have tried all the CS3 templates, but haven't found what our client is requesting. Is there a template that shows the file name on both the thumbnail and large image, and will make large images of 600-800 pixels (long dimension)?
Thanks in advance,
Dan ClarkThanks for your reply Nini. Yes, I had gone through all the presets and options. Was hoping I might have missed something, or that someone knew a trick/workaround. We've been using Table-Minimal for years, which is my overall favorite. I like to ability to make a large image, but it can't do what the client is requesting. They've made a list of selects from some very large galleries (200-300 shots each), and now want to jump directly to the shots they've previously chosen, in order to show their coworkers. I've also considered "Add Numeric Links", but I find that either confuses people, or they give me that number, instead of the file name/number, which makes a lot of extra work for us.

How can I re-name a single image after importing it to Aperture?
I am having a problem renaming a single image after importing it - I would have thought it would be simple! Does anyone know how this can be done?
Hi RQ,
Straight out of the manual
To rename masters
In the Browser, select an image or group of images.
Choose Metadata > Batch Change (or press Command-Shift-B).
In the Batch Change dialog, choose a naming convention from the Version Name Format pop-up menu to specify how you want the masters named. For example, choose Version Name from the Version Name Format pop-up menu to have your master filenames changed to match the names of the corresponding versions in Aperture. If you choose a custom name format, enter the name you want in the Custom Name text field. For more information about naming files, see Automatically Naming Your Imported Images.
Select the Apply to Master File(s) checkbox, then click OK.
The master files corresponding to the selected images are renamed. For more information about working with the Batch Change dialog, see Batch Changing Metadata.
Hope that is what you are after.

I opened iPhoto today and over HALF of my photos events are BLACK! when i go deeper into that event, the thumbnails show (phew), but if i choose an image to enlarge i get a big FAT ( ? ) for an image!!!! WHAT IS GOING ON??? are they gone? i'm freakin out, i've guarded these nearly 4,000 missing photos for years! I have backups of most, but what gives with the black events and question marks?? do i have to delete an event and re-import it?? help!
Experianced this problem just yesterday. After rebuilding the iPhoto database and all the other options to try and repair it I followed directions to recreate the library which solved the issue. All of the created events will still be retained using this method but I believe any edits made to photos might be lost. Although if you import the modified folder in the same manner as before you should have your edited copies again but I don't think you'll be able to revert to original on them.
First move your existing iPhoto library from your Pictures folder to the desktop.
Start iPhoto and tell it to create a new library.
Ctrl-click your iPhoto library on your desktop and show package contents (might be listed as something else but don't have access to my Mac to check).
Drag the originals folder from there into the iPhoto window and it should import your photos.
At that point all should be back as they were. If you've edited a bunch then drag the modified folder in just like you did for the original folder. Then you should see both your edited and the original photos side by side in your library.
Try the other options first but if nothing works then this certainly does. Even if it's not the best way to do things. -
Two Tricks that helped me for fixing wrong thumbnails and missing images
I have about 15,000 photos in iPhoto (6.0.2) on an newish iMac. I have seen two oddities:
(1) Sometimes I get the wrong thumbnail.
(2) Sometime when I go to edit a photo, the photo never comes up I just get the spining "beach ball".
Fixes:
(1) Sometimes I get the wrong thumbnail. I have many duplicate file names. (Blame Canon (or the way I use the camera.)) The confused thumbnails are always from other images with the same file name. My fix is to rename the >title< (not filename) to something unique and then rebuild the thumbnails. The easiest way to rename the photos is use Photos>Batch Change (use set the title to text and append a number (I name them after the subject.)) You can rebuild the thumbnails by starting iPhoto with option and command keys down and selecting the rebuild thumbnail options.
(2) Sometime when I go to edit a photo, the photo never comes up I just get the spining "beach ball". Exporting the broken image seems to fix it. (You don't need to re-import. Just try exporting the broken image to somewhere (the desk top works) and see if that fixes the problem. (Then throw the exported images away. You don't need them.)
These forums have been a great help to me. I hope these tricks help someone else. Thanks especially to Lori and Old Toad for consistantly useful answers!

When I import some photos that I scanned (doesn't happen to all) into iPhoto some of them show up as black as the thumbnail and when I click on them they show up when expanded. Also, some of them stay black...even when I've imported a perfectly fine jpeg file it sometimes shows up as black. What do I do?? How can I fix this??
Thank you for your reply. No, they are full color pictures.
I think I found a workaround.
The pictures were in JPEG format. I opened them up and saved them in JPEG-2000 and that seemed to work fine. The pictures don't seem to be as vibrant, but that's ok.
Any other ideas as to what the heck's going on? There are some .tif images that are screwy as well.
Thanks! -
IPhoto 9.3 shows black thumbnail and preview
When I import picture in portrait orientation iPhoto 9.3 creates black previews and thumbnails.
Is this a problem of iPhoto 9.3?People have been reporting this for a while now, with no fix at this time.
Many folks find that rotating the image and then rotate it back will get them a thumbnail.
iPhoto menu -> Provide iPhoto Feedback and report it.

Black thumbnails and pictures in Media Center in PE8
Hi,
I've had this issue for years (in PE6, 7 and now 8) and on various Windows versions (XP MCE, Vista and now on W7 x86 and x64) but I've finally decided to try and do something about it as I'd really like to be able to use the MC plugin.
As the title says, some of my pictures appear black (both the thumbnail and the picture itself) in Media Center. All my pictures are fine in the desktop version of PE8. It seems to happen exclusively with pictures that are taken vertically (portrait orientation), those in landscape are fine. But some portrait pictures (though very few) appear fine too. I've also found out that if I open a "black" picture in the Editor and save it (without changing anything), then it will appear fine in MC. And I've noticed that it's only happening with my camera (Canon Ixus 860 IS) although I had the same problem with my 2 previous cameras (both Canon PowerShots). The memory cards were different too.
I'm pretty baffled by all this and I really don't know what I could do to sort this out. If anybody has had the same problem or if anyone can think of a solution, any helps would be greatly appreciated!
Here's a picture to illustrate what I'm talking about:My suspicion is that your problem correlates to a photo orientation indicator set by your camera in the photo file.
some ideas
--Choose one photo which displays black in Media Center
-- In the PSE Organizer thumbnail area, select that photo and display the Organizer Properties panel/window for that photo. within the Camera Data of that Properties window you are looking for an Orientation field - what does it say ?
-- Now in the Organizer, rotate the thumbnail of that same photo 90 degrees to the right or to the left and then rotate it back in the other direction
-- Do whatever you may need to do to refresh your display through Media Center and check if this photo displays OK.
After you post back with your results, we can discuss in more detail the what and the why. If my theory is correct the solution should be easy.
FYI - I suspect that your identifying that the problem was specific to portrait photos which had not been edited will be very significant in identifying what is happening. Good analysis. -
Photos appear as negative images after updating to iOS 7
I have the iPhone 4S. After downloading iOS 7, my photos are still present but appear as negative images. Anyone else have this problem?
It is still there and the same as before, you just have to click on the various views available. I think it is the album view that shows the Camera Roll first as before. The default view after downloading iOS 7 is not the same, but you can change it.

When viewing images after import....
I have a fundamental question about viewing RAW pics on screen in Aperture right after an import. I shoot Nikon and was told that only CaptureNX will allow me to see my in-camera settings (white balance, saturation, contrast, etc.) when I shoot RAW. So when I pull up the imported image in NX, I would be looking at my picture with the settings written to them as well. And it's true. My cool/bluish white balance settings showed right up on the image the way I set them in the camera while shooting in RAW.
What I'm wondering is, if I am "only able to see these in-camera settings in NX" what am I seeing in Aperture on the screen? It appears that these in-camera settings are also showing up in Aperture. I shot RAW with a very cool white balance, and that's what appeared after import in Aperture.
Was the advice about "NX only" incorrect? Does Aperture show us our in-camera settings on the monitor when shooting in RAW? Any help with understanding this is appreciated.
Jerryi believe that the only in-camera setting that you will see is the white balance ...
any in-camera sharpening, saturation, etc on a RAW file will only be seen on the embedded jpeg when using any software other than the manufacturers - this holds true for Canon too ... this is due to the proprietary information that the makers use in these settings ...
this is also why if you change your camera to shoot monochrome and then shoot RAW, aperture or lightroom (or others) will not apply the monochrome ... -
Is there a way to batch rename images after import?
After importing images and doing some further organization of my old library, I want to give the names a more descriptive name. Is this possible after I have already imported the images?
You can change the Version Name (what you see in Aperture) at any time, either manually or with the Batch Change function. Changing the name of the actual file is more tricky and only possible with referenced Masters.

Hi,
I must be dense, I can't find help with this anywhere. I would like Aperture to move images to the trash automatically after import. Specifically, I import from a folder, and would like that folder to be cleared after every import. I think the applescript brick on the import screen can help with this, but I don't know enough applescript to do this.
Any advice please?
Thanks! The following script should get you started. It asks for the folder and then for the extension of the files you want to delete. Then it asks if you want to empty the trash.
-- Set folder to delete
set f to choose folder with prompt "Pick a folder:"
-- Set the file extension
set ext to text returned of (display dialog "What is the file extension?" default answer "" buttons {"OK"} default button "OK")
tell application "Finder"
try
delete (every item of folder f whose name extension is ext)
end try
end tell
-- Display a dialog window asking whether to empty trash or not
set theButton to button returned of (display dialog "Would you like to empty the trash?" with icon caution buttons {"Empty Trash", "Cancel"} default button "Cancel" giving up after 10)
if theButton is "Empty Trash" then
tell application "Finder"
empty trash
end tell
end if
I think asking for the folder and the file extension is safer then just blindly going off and blowing away a folder but thats me. You could change it and hardcode in those values.
If you put this in as the Applescript Action in the import window it wil run when the import is finished.
If you try this *I strongly recommend you do this as a test situation at first* Make a new empty library and make sure you import the files into your regular library before trying this.
I offer no warranties, guarantees, or other ees.

If you leave the folder or the extension empty the scripts does bad things. They need to be checked to see if they have a value before calling the finder to delete -
Thumbnails do not appear after import
Hi - I just tried to import photos from a card to iPhoto '09. After the import, I noticed that the thumbnails (and pictures) do not show up in the iPhoto screen. I checked the "originals" folder, and they did copy to there. I tried to "import" from the originals folder, but iPhoto said that the pictures were already in the library. Can anyone please tell me how to fix this?
FYI - my library and all originals are stored on an HP Mediasmart server. I have iPhoto pointed to the library on the server.
Thanks!J M
Welcome to the Apple user to user assistance forums
What is the format of the HP Media server? Many people have had many problems when the iPhoto library is on a disk that is not formated Mac OS extended (journaled)
Did the import appear to go normally?
What does appear?
Also note that it is advised not to be going into the iPhoto library directly via the finder or via other programs
And iPhoto will not import photos from inside the iPhoto library (to do so would create duplicates)

D300 - Erasing Images After Import
After importing images from the camera, I don't get an option to erase the memory card in the camera - just a "Transfer Complete" kind of dialog with a single "OK" button. Anyone experienced similar behavior?
Thanks...This was my thinking also. I've been using Aperture since its inception with a D50 and it always gave me the option to "Erase and Eject" memory card after picture transfer was complete. I always felt "safer" knowing my pics were on my Mac so I'd just erase the card at that time. Never had any issues with the memory cards or the camera doing it this way. I could then just grab it and run. It's not a huge deal to format the card after transfer, just seems like an added step is all. It just seems like something that used to work fine and now doesn't, sort of a step backward for Aperture.
