Black & White Adjustment that retains same Greyscale values (when in Color)

Hi all,
I noticed that when I apply a simple Black&White Adjustment layer to my colored layers, the 'Greyscale values' either via LAB sliders /HSb brightness changes drastically.:
http://i57.tinypic.com/16ifm8n.png
eg the L slider for the turquoisy color jumps so much
I've tried the Hue/Saturation & Black&White adjustment layers with default settings. Can someone tell me a quick B&W workaround conversion that adheres as close as possible to sliders values when the adjustment layer is off?  I used it for digital coloring to check my composition 'values' regularly, so complex grayscale conversions would be less preferable. Also, I do not need it to be perfect to human vision, just hopefully adhere roughly to the 'L' or 'B' slider values when the B&W adjustment is turned on/off
thanks alot!

I believe the tone shift to which you are referring is caused by the B&W adjustment layer as demonstrated here. This is the basic file (Adobe RGB):
Add a duplicate layer and change its Blending Mode to Luminosity. The colors will not change. Then add a Black & White Adjustment Layer and it will modify the resultant color like this:
For a clearer comparison, the image below shows the beginning image with the altered luminosity of the B&W Adjustment layer in the center circle
(Notice Clipping Mask)
So, the default setting of the sliders that appear in the B&W drop-down menu must be adjusted so that, at the start, this Adjustment layer of the Luminosity does not alter the color. To do that, I had to change the settings to:
Reds     33
Yellows 90
Greens     60
Cyans     72
Blues     14
Magentas 46
You may save these settings as a Preset. so that they do not require resetting each time. The practical application of this is that it allows you to lighten and darken specific colors in a scene without resorting to selections. I have found this to be most useful in landscape images. (I overdid the changes in the sample below for demonstration purposes only.)

  • PS not allowing me to add a Black & White Adjustment layer

    Hi,
    Hope you're well.
    There is a photo I've downloaded from the Internet that is by a photographer who shoots in Black & White. However, when I print out the photo it comes out sepia. I tried adding a Black & White Adjustment layer, but when I go to click on the button in the adjustment palette it's grayed out. I've tried this on other photos of the photographer and does it fine.
    Any idea what is going on and how it can be resolved? Thanks!

    Well, let's assume you are in Grayscale. But just to be sure, open the image and look at the document title bar, it should read something like Gray/8. This indicates your color mode (other modes can be RGB, CMYK, Index and others...). The color settings are found Edit>Color Settings. But don't worry about those for the time being.
    Can you give the specs for your printer? Inkjet printers use all colors in printing a grayscale image. Ideally, they do this in percentages that create a neutral tone on the paper. If some of the nozzles are clogged, or if you have wrong choices in the Print Dialog, you will definitely see a color cast. Printing only with black ink will not yield photo-quality results.
    Make sure the most recent driver for the printer is installed.
    Also, what version of Photoshop on what OS?

  • CS4 Black & White Adjustment - Missing Sliders ?

    In CS3 the Black & White Adjustment Layer dialogue offered two sliders for adding a tint. These were Hue and Saturation, and were delightfully easy to use.
    In CS4 the Black & White Adjustment Layer non-modal tab does not have these two sliders; instead you have to click on the square called tint which opens up the Select target color: dialogue. OK so hue has a slider, but adjusting the saturation requires entering a figure into a box (or all the arrow key stuff). Not anywhere near as convenient nor intuitive as sliders.
    It is possible to regain this flexibility by directly converting the image to Black & White using the Black & White conversion dialogue available from the menu, but then this means that it has to be on a copy of the image and is, therefore, not re-adjustable later.
    Is it possible to have the modal dialogues back for Adjustment Layers, along with all the adjustments previously available, or are CS4 users stuck with the Adjustments Panel - as is ?
    Any other suggestions for getting these two useful slider back ?
    (but why take them away in the first place ?)

    We are at cross-purposes here:
    Simon is talking about using a
    Black and White Adjustment Layer.
    It is in the palette for that kind of layer that you will see the Tint Box with the little colored square beside it.
    If you check the Tint Box and then CLICK on the little colored square, you will open the regular Color Picker (as shown in # Eight).
    At that time, Sliders are available for any selected channel, or choice of input, when you click its dedicated Radio Button.
    Sliders for Colorizing can be reached from a Hue/Sat Adjustment Layer but that is a different scenario from the one which Simon was talking about.

  • Black&White adjustment layer problem

    Hi all,
    When I try to apply a black&white adjustment layer in Photoshop CS3 Ext., I get the dreaded message: "Could not complete yor request because of a program error". This is true for Tiffs and PSDs (8bit multi layered or 8bit flat) but not for jpegs. Is this a bug or a feature? Or am I doing something wrong?
    Thanks for you time,
    Francois Hendrickx
    Amsterdam

    Could be a hardware acceleration issue with the b&w effect. Turn off OpenGL to verify. also make sure your adjustment layer is not clipped/ masked/ repositioned/ smaller than your comp. Remeber: The adjustment layer merely defines the area to which the effect will be applied, the actula processing still happens on the buffer below it. For anything else we will need more info ansd screenshots. We do not even know what version of AE you are referring to.

  • Preserving Black color values when converting color PDF to grayscale

    I opened a full colored PDF document (exported from InDesign using Profile: Euroscale Coated v2) in Photoshop and tried to convert it to grayscale (image > mode > grayscale) and noticed that the black color values changed. text for example that was 100% black in the PDF document became a screen of 91% black.
    is there a way to preserve color values when converting full color PDF documents to grayscale?
    or in other words WHICH is the correct way to convert full color PDF documents or full color InDesign files to grayscale?
    I am using Adobe CS 3, Acrobat 8 Professional, on Mac OS 10.5.5

    Before you open the PDF in Photoshop, set PS's Color Settings to Photoshop 5 Default Spaces. When you open the PDF set the Mode to Grayscale in the Import dialog. Just remember to reset your color settings when you're done.
    Edit: Also, if you want to match black percentages as well as 100% black, set the Photoshop Color Settings to Photoshop 5 Default Spaces with the Gray working space to Dot Gain 20%.

  • How to retain a form values when navigating to another form

    I have a createUser.jsp where i can create new user(CreateUserForm). I need to call an action which will take me to another jsp findPage.jsp (FindAssociateForm) where i perform some operations and then comes back to previous page createUser.jsp. When I come to createUser.jsp, all the form values (like first name, lasst name, etc) are getting lost. so I had to re-enter the whole information again which should not be case.
    I would like to retain the form values.
    Please note I have one pageflow but two form beans as both are different JSPs.
    Thanks for looking into this and I appreciate your help.
    -Ananth

    Hi Ananth,
    U need to define Pageflow formbeans.
    The formbean u defined is request scope. Pagefloe formbeans are global and can be used through out pageflow.
    Coming back to first page can be of different cases, form validation failure or navigation logic.
    In form validation Failure you can use, forward path as Jpf.Navigate.ToCurrentPage or Jpf.Navigate.ToPreviousPage depending on your flow. The values will be retained even if form bean is request scope.
    ex:     @Jpf.Action(forwards = {
                   @Jpf.Forward(name = "success", path = "findPage.jsp"),
                   @Jpf.Forward(name = "failure", navigateTo = Jpf.NavigateTo.currentPage)})
    If its a navigation logic, the you need to add this formbean in the forward.
    ex: forward.addOutputForm(createUserForm);
    Let me know if you need anything more.

  • Why does black/white print with magenta hue?

    When I print black/white greyscale in Adobe Reader or Acrobat, some documents print with ghost text that appears in a light magenta.  This ghost text is staggered to the bottom right of the black text.
    I'm printing from Mac OS X 10.8.4, Adobe Reader 11.0.03 using an HP LaserJet 1525nw.
    The left side of the image is a screen capture from the PDF and printed.  The right side printed directly from the PDF.
    Any ideas why this happens?

    Sorry - I was able to find out how to do color calibrate.  It is supposed to print a page but never did.  I tried it twice.  Not sure if it actually did anything.  But results are the same with printing.
    The printer is very low on the three color cartridges, which I don't use.  It is at normal capacity on black.  Even though I'm selecting to print only black/white in Reader, could the low status on the color cartridges be causes this pink hue?
    I did try a pure PDF document (one that isn't a scanned print page).  It printed without issue.  As I mentioned above, there is something about a scanned in printed page, which causes this pink hue issue.

  • Black & White similar to Photoshop?

    In Premiere Pro, there is a Black & White filter that simply makes the image Black & White with no drop down menu to control the effect.  In Photoshop, the Black & White filter lets you convert how each color will be interpreted to a Black & White image.  Is there anything similar to this in Premiere Pro?  I've found this particularly helpful in still images and want to try this for video.
    Thanks,
    JB

    What your version of Premiere is doing is a simple de-saturation of the colors.
    Photoshop has, finally after having to do this "manually" for years, added a color adjustment to the B/W filter.
    So, just do the same: First apply color correction filter(s), and then the B/W filter. After the B/W filter is applied, go into the color adjustment filter(s) and adjust until the final wanted B/W look is achieved.

    Hi Baba,
    Below are some step-by-step instructions that show you how to acheive this effect very easily with the Quick Selection Tool and a Black & White Adjustment Layer.
    1. Open up your image in Photoshop. In the toolbar, click on the Quick Selection Tool and select your subject.
    2. Go to Select > Refine Edge and use the dialog box to clean up your selection - I've enabled the Smart Radius option and increased the selection radius. When you're done, click OK.
    3. Go to Select > Inverse.
    4. Locate the Adjustments panel - by default, it should be located above the Layers panel (in CS6), but if you can't find it, go to Window > Adjustments. Click on the Black & White adjustment icon, as shown below. Your subject will stay in color, but the setting should turn black and white, as you can see below.
    For more on using Adjustment Layers, below is a quick video that goes over the basics:

  • Black/White option Greyed Out

    I have a jpeg image that I would like to apply a Black/White adjustment layer to and then ideally fade it by about 50% in order to use it as a background image.  However, when I attempt to apply the Black/White adjustment layer the option is greyed out.  Does anyone know why this is and also how I can work around this?  This is not a copyrighted image or anything.  It is an image of our building that a previous employee took years ago.

  • Using a script to get the color of a colorized Black & White Bitmap image

    I've been running into this wall for quite some time and would greatly appreciate any help that can given for it.
    I have an Illustrator script that runs inside of a BridgeTalk session within an InDesign script.  Yeah, it's complicated.  The upshot is that the Illustrator part opens up an EPS file, looks through all objects on a certain layer in that file, and returns an array of the colors used in it.  So, it looks at fill colors, stroke colors, gradient stops, etc.  One of the biggest stumbling blocks (next to PlugIn Items, which I'll ask about in a separate post) is getting the color of raster images.
    Most raster images, I realize, are going to be CMYK or RGB images, but our company mostly deals with either Grayscale images or Black & White Bitmaps that are embedded in the EPS file.  Those two allow the ability to colorize them by simply selecting them and then choosing a color, such as a spot PANTONE color from one of their color books.
    Now, I need the script to read the color that the raster image has been colorized with.  This works okay for images that have a GrayScale color space, as the script just looks at Colorant[0] of that image.  However, I run into a problem with Black & White Bitmap images.  Here's a piece of code that I try to make work with an EPS file that has a raster image:
    var document = app.activeDocument;
    for (var i = 0; i < document.layers[0].pageItems.length; i++) {
              // Stepping through each item on the layer.
              var currentItem = document.layers[0].pageItems[i];
              $.writeln("Current item is " + currentItem.typename);
              $.writeln("Number of channels is " + currentItem.channels);
              $.writeln("Color Space is " + currentItem.imageColorSpace);
              $.writeln("Colorized Grayscale? " + currentItem.colorizedGrayscale);
              $.writeln("Number of Colorants: " + currentItem.colorants.length);
              for (var j = 0; j < currentItem.colorants.length; j++)
                        $.writeln("Colorant number " + j + " is " + currentItem.colorants[j]);
              $.writeln("Its parent is " + currentItem.parent);
              $.writeln("Parent's typename is " + currentItem.parent.typename);
    This code runs successfully on an Illustrator file that has a Black & White Bitmap image on the top layer, but if you try and run it, you'll see the problem:  Even if you've colorized your Bitmap image with a PANTONE spot color (and the script even returns "true" on the line "Colorized Grayscale?"), Colorant number 0 is "Gray".  It should be the spot color assigned, not "Gray".
    Can anyone please help me figure out how to get the script to recognize the actual colorant of a Black & White Bitmap image in Illustrator?

    If you're a professional photographer with 50,000 pictures stored now and more coming all the time, you need to forget about using iPhoto and get yourself some professional-quality digital asset management software. iPhoto is not meant for people like you, and instead of providing a simple, elegant one-stop answer to all your needs, iPhoto is actually complicating your life.
    You need an application that will:
    - catalog ALL your images and keep track of where they are, no matter how many DVDs, folders, partitions or hard drives they're spread over;
    - display thumbnails of ALL of them, even when the DVD that contains them is not present in any drive, so you can select all the ones you want for a project;
    - find and copy (or export) the originals of all the files you've selected in the browser window, even if it means prompting you to insert the necessary DVDs for all of them.
    I suggest Googling "digital asset management software Macintosh" and seeing what turns up. I used to use an old version of Extensis Portfolio, and even that would have been better for your purposes than iPhoto is.

    Thanks for your help!

    Open a color image in Full Photo Edit
    On the top menu click Layer >>Duplicate Layer >>OK
    Enhance >>Convert To Black & White >>OK
    Add a layer mask by clicking on the layer mask icon at the bottom of the layers pallet.
    Select a brush and adjust its size, then make sure your foreground color is set to black.
    Gently brush over the area where you want to show the color from the background layer. If you make a mistake change the foreground color to white to erase what you just did, then switch back to black again.
