Blank cookie alert dropdown hangs Firefox

Firefox 4, on a Mac. Cookie setting is set to 'ask every time.' Once in a while, after either dismissing the cookie alert without accepting or denying, or after specifically denying a particular cookie, I will get a totally BLANK cookie alert drop-down window with no buttons to click. And this blank alert completely hangs up Firefox. I must force-quit Firefox in order to get out of it.
Here's what it looks like:
http://tinyurl.com/447ajmk
Anyone have any idea how I can keep this from happening, or how to dismiss the blank alert without having to force-quit Firefox?

I get an e-mail with go-comics and the ones I want to post links to I'll open in the browser as I read them in the e-mail so I regularly have a dozen tabs open (all the same site) by the time I'm through the e-mail. Every third or fourth page will hang up on something (connecting to or waiting for) sometimes not loading a single image, sometimes loading half the page, sometimes loading everything but the comic (because, hey, why put that as the first thing to load when you've got all these ads and crap to throw at your paying customers?).
At some point a couple of months ago I got some malware associated with trovisearch (I do not know how that got past security and java blocker but it did, probably some hidden crap in something from CNET) that somehow spoofed a page for Housecall and added five or six pieces of malware and adware. I cleaned for two days after and still can't find anything left on the computer even though I've been running scans constantly to try to make Firefox work right. I downloaded and ran a scan using Kaspersky during that time and then uninstalled it. That very well may be the cause of the post-refresh SSL issue.
I have Spybot and Malwarebytes scan logs from the time of the infection if that would help in any way. It doesn't look like there's a way to attach .xml files in this forum, though.
I can also run hijack this and copy and paste if that would help.
I'm currently running Windows Defender and rely on that and Noscript and adblocker plus to keep me isolated from most attacks (I don't have those add-ons re-installed yet). I also run Peerblock because they add malicious sites and known hacking sources (like Chinanet) to what they block as well as all the fake p2p stuff that's constantly pinging the computer. If I'm treading around in perilous waters I run Sandboxie.
Chrome is working as normal but Firefox feels like dial-up or worse right now and without adblocker I might as well be using IE.

  • SOLVED: Blank Installer Alert dialog - CS4 Installer vs Safari 4

According to the Adobe KB, the blank installer alert dialog is a result of having Safari 4 installed. (Seriously?!)
They were of the opinion that it meant you didn't meet minimum system requirements, but that's not the only way to get it. You can also get it for something as piddling as have Safari or Firefox running when you launch the Installer. (OMG! He's running a browser! Stop everything!!!1!)
As such, here's a way to locate the actual error message that should be in the Installer window.
    The Fix
The fix assumes you have already run the CS4 installer and staring at a blank Installer Alert right now. If you're not, do so first.
    Then do the following...
Launch Console, located in the Utilities folder inside the Applications folder.
Click the Logs button in the upper left of the window.
In the list of logs on the left, navigate to:/Library/Logs/Adobe/Installers
Locate the current install. It will end in today's date.log.gz. For example:Adobe Creative Suite 4 Design Premium 4.0 07-24-2009.log.gz
Click the log and scroll to the very end, where you will see an ERROR, followed by the reason.
    For example:
    [       0] Fri Jul 24 11:24:37 2009 ERROR
Installation cannot continue until the following applications are closed:
    - Firefox
Please exit these applications and then click Retry to proceed.
Now you can Force Quit the Installer (option-click on the icon in the Dock to see this menu item), rectify the situation, and try, try again...
    Hope this helps others.
PS to any Adobe personell who might drop by: You cannot kill the Installer & Updater soon enough. Give us Apple Install packages like Jobs intended!
I just wasted 5 or 6 hours of my company's time and 12gb of your bandwidth installing a bunch of copies of CS3 because of the wretched Installer/Updater. If I'd had Apple Install packages, I could have downloaded it once and fired the updates to all machines and been done in 20 minutes.

Harbs just pointed me to an excellent blog post that gives me hope there will eventually be light at the end of the Installer tunnel in CS5, btw. Others might take heart from it too. I'm including a quick quote from the start of it to whet your appetite. It definitely deserves wider distribution!
    Adobe Updater Approach
Adobe's updater technology through CS4 is known as the Adobe Update
Manager (AUM.) AUM has a long history of various problems. Our user
community has been vocal about the number and types of problems
experienced through AUM. In the next instance of the Creative Suite, we
intend to provide a different update experience that should address a
number of the most egregious problems discussed thus far. In particular:
Failure of an update to successfully apply to a user's system
Failure to adequately roll back a partial or failed update, thus leaving the user's system in an unusable state
The update process interferes with users trying to get their own work done
When we started out the design for the new Adobe Updater we set a few simple goals:
Make the Adobe Updater install the updates successfully and if the
updater fails, ensure whatever was installed as part of updater is
rolled back and the machine is back to its orginal state.
Make the Adobe Updater non-intrusive. The Adobe Updater should not
interfere with the user's tasks by poping dialogs in middle of your
extremely critical workflows. It will not be an in your face
    application.
Make sure the Adobe Updater when running does not hog your CPU cycles.
Using the Adobe Updater should be a pleasant experience.
Checking for updates is silent and the notification for available updates is clean and unobtrusive.
Provide ways for system administrators to turn-off updates completly.
Secondarily, we also want to enable easier management of updates by
    system administrators.

  • Youtube freezes or hangs firefox but works great in Internet Explorer

Every time pull up youtube in Firefox it immediately freezes or hangs the entire browser. the only thing I can do is close down Firefox via the task manager. This happens every single time. It used to work fine. I've even disable accelerate video. Nothing seems to work. The only time it kind of works is when I uninstall and reinstall firefox and/or flash player. Then the very first time I pull up youtube it will work great but when I close down the browser then reopen it and go to youtube, I have the same exact problem as before.
Firefox will pull up youtube with no problem when I uninstall the flashplayer (of course can't see videos then) but once it's installed youtube freezes.
Also Internet Explorer pulls up youtube videos great, just like Firefox used to do. Don't know what's wrong or what's happened but youtube immediately freezes or hangs Firefox when flashplayer is installed in firefox

Hey guys I think we've got a fix for this one. As most often the case the glitch is not with FF but with some plugin or incompatible piece of SW.
Troubleshoot: Uninstall FF, uninstall flashplayer, uninstall all brower toolbars add ons etc. (use Adobe Flash uninstaller if necessary (http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html#main_Download_the_Adobe_Flash_Player_uninstaller)
Then reinstall most recent version of FF and then most recent of Flashplayer.
DO NOT add, enable, attach anything else at all. Just Bare FF and Only most recent flash player.
If you had Zone Alarm toolbar add on earlier and have uninstalled and not reinstalled it, FF is likely to pullup youtube videos with no problem.
Zone Alarm toolbar is incompatible with FF when flashplayer installed and pulling up a youtube page.
It's likely other toolbars may also be incompatible so just install the naked browser and then the Flashplayer. If it works you can begin reinstalling addons etc one by one.

  • Blank Install alert - install Mac os Production Premium

    Hello all,
I have been trying like heckfire to install CS4 Production Premium on my computer. I did a clean install of the entire system (I had it installed previously, but the computer needed to be wiped and re-installed), and everytime I try to install, I can't get past the Setup window. I keep getting an alert window that says on the title bar "Installer Alert" but the window itself is blank. There is nothing to click on and I only get an alert sound when I click anywhere. I have to force quit the installer to get out of it.
    Here are my specs.
Power Mac G5 - PowerPC ( I know that most of the programs don't run on this computer, like After Effects etc. But it will install PS, ILL and Flash, I had done it previously)
    Dual 1.8 ghz processors
    1 GB of ram
    900 MHz bus
    Mac OS X 10.4.11
After the first few attempts, there were some Adobe files on the computer. Since I was unable to uninstall, I did a rigorous search and eliminated all the CS, CS4 and Adobe installed related files.
I've tried to unistall (but it won't even get that far) and even tried using the CS4 cleaner script, but it says there's no Adobe software on the computer.
    thank you!
    Robert

Solution To The Blank Install Alert:
    1. Go to http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cs4clean.html or www.adobe.com and in the Search Box type "clean script". Scroll through the info to find Clean Script CS3. Download the correct version for your computer Mac or Windows.
    2. If on a mac, open the .dmg file and run the Clean Script CS3. It should open a window and ask a language. Then it will ask you to accept the Terms of the agreement. When it asks you to run a level run level 2, twice. It is very important to do this twice. After you have run that twice, run Level 4 twice, even if level 4 is not listed it will run this. And again run Level 4 twice.
    * Note Clean Script CS3 is different than CS4 Clean Script and is typically better.
    3. Set up a new user and be sure to check the box for administrator abilities.
    4. Restart your computer and after it is off and starts to come back on, hold down the shift key to start it in safe mode.
    5. Log on as the new user with administrator abilities.
    6. Insert your install disk and follow the steps!
After an hour on the phone with a very knowledgeable support guy this is the solution that worked. I did run CS4 clean Script when on the phone with a lady that disconnected me, after running this failed to fix the problem. Thanks To Adobe Support my Design Suite is up and running!
    Hope this helps.

installer appears as "blank dos-box type", hangs, anti virus off, firewall off, system win xp 64 bit. all attempts to solve failed. What next?

    Jeff,
after trying to find, and use screen shot, i tried to access reader
downloader... instead, found an offline version of reader. after
installation started getting false reports that appeared as avg pop-ups.
Within task manager, was able to detect virus / worm running 6 - 8
services. immediately disconnected my 'net connection. closed all active
services being run by rogue process. determined it was using two files
named "lastalive0.dat" and"lastalive1.dat" to determine it's own status...
upon stopping it's services it controlled, it would soft re-boot to
resurrect another hijack attempt. tried workaround using secondary boot
(win 7) to no avail. after two days, i transferred personal data to
removable media and am in process of installing debian version of linux.
i thank you for reply and apologize for my tardy response, it was my first
    forum experience

I'm trying to upgrade from CS2 to CS4 Design Premium. It goes most of the way through the system profile; starts to load setup and then a blank installer alert window pops up. I'm running system 10.4.11 on a Mac Pro Dual-Core Intel Xeon.

  • Blank "Installer Alert" screen

    Hello everyone.
I am trying to install CS4 to my MAC from a DVD and am getting a blank "Installer Alert" screen.
Anyone have any idea what is going on?
I may be that the installer is not happy about my external DVD drive (the internal one is kaput).
If so, would it be possible to download CS4? CS5 will not run on my computer.
I have purchased the DVDs so I have a valid serial number.
    Thanks in advance.

Hi, for downloading CS4, this recent thread may be of assistance.

  • Is the appearance of Javascript alerts modifiable in Firefox 4.0?

Firefox 4.0 allows users to do a lot of customizing, which is great. Does this extend to the appearance of Javascript alerts?
Unlike Firefox 3.6, in version 4.0 when an alert pops up, the underlying web page is darkened, half opaque and half transparent. This focuses the user's attention on the alert box. Is there a way for me to change this setting to be 20% opaque, 80% transparent? That would make it easier for me to see what the alert is trying to tell me about the underlying web page.

You can use code in [https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/stylish/ Stylish] or add code to [http://kb.mozillazine.org/UserChrome.css userChrome.css] below the @namespace line to change the background color and the transparency.
Some examples (first is the current default; only use one):
    <pre><nowiki>@namespace url("http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul"); /* only needed once */
    tabmodalprompt { background-color: rgba(25, 25, 25, 0.5) !important; }
    tabmodalprompt { background-color: rgba(224, 224, 224, 0.1) !important; }
    tabmodalprompt { background-color: transparent !important; }
    </nowiki></pre>

  • Shockwave Flash plugin hangs Firefox, how do I stop this?

The shockwave flash plugin consistantly hangs firefox with everything Youtube related. I can't watch any videos of that format (which seems to be most videos.) Whenever this happens, I have to end the plugin_container process from the task manager. How can I stop this from happening? Is this issue being addressed? If this continues, I will be forced to switch away from Firefox permanantly.

Aaah that makes sense, the only problem i have now is that when in my gideonmarshall.com add cname record page i have the following option :-
Host name (then a blank box to type in) .gideonmarshall.com
points to (then a blank box to type in)
(how i set it up originally is - Host name (WWW) .gideonmarshall.com
    points to (web.me.com)
what do i type into the host name box now to get gideonmarshall.com to redirect to either www.gideonmarshall.com or web.me.com?? I would have thought that anything i type in there would just create another sub domain which would then compound my problem and i can't leave it blank. Also would it be best to do this as a new cname record directing gideonmarshall.com to www.gideonmarshall.com, or for me to just sort out the initial cname record i created so it directs gideonmarshall.com to web.me.com and if that is the case what would i put in the host name box since i can't leave it blank??
Thanks for all your help so far, fingers crossed this last bit is easy
