Blu-ray export quality

When burning 1440x1080i25 to Blu-ray in Encore:  in Export Settings, should you set  it to High Quality or Long Form or Maximum Quality to get the best visual quality from normal DV tape footage?
Why when I select PCM in audio does it revert to Custom, and what is Custom? (which of the above three is it?)

When you first enter Encore, in the New Project box, in Advanced tab, in Audio Transcoding Scheme, you can select Dolby Digital, MPEG-1 Layer II (greyed out), or PCM. Then if you click File > Edit Quality Presets > Audio, you can select either Dolby Digital or PCM for the Audio Format Settings.
I need to know whether Dolby Digital will encode my music unaltered, or whether it will compress the VU level (make the loud parts softer and the soft parts louder)
It would also be useful to know whether PCM encoded sound will play on all BR players?

Try Save As and rename the file. Can you export the file now as a different format?
I'm guessing it's a corrupt file or it's written on bad blocks on your drive resulting in problems.
    Run Repair Permissions:
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Applications/Utility folder.
    2. Click on the First Aid tab and select Repair Permissions
    3. Click on the icon for your boot volume.
    4. Click the repair permissions button.
To Repair your drive, you have to boot from another device.
Option 1) If you have your Install CD for Snow Leopard you can boot from the CD to run Repair Drive.
Option 2)  If you have a clone backup, you can boot from the clone and run Repair Drive.

  • Blu Ray export is corrupted, help!

When exporting as Blu ray, FCP burns the disc allright, but when I view it with my blu ray player, all the video clip parts of thw movie are replaced with one 2second loop from the beginning of the movie. All photos show correctly though, and the sound plays properly in the background. In the timeline the movie plays correctly. FCP has rendered it 100%.

  • CS6 H264 Blu Ray Export Dolby Digital not bitrate selection Issues

    Hello,
if we try to export in H264 for Blu Ray Format and switch to Dolby Digital the bitrate selection vanishes from the setting:
But if we deselect the audio export and select it again the bitrate can be set correctly.
Seems to be a small error in the media encoder CS6

  • Compressor 4.1.2  Blu-ray poor quality

I upgraded to Compressor 4.1.2 and my Blu-Ray disks became pixelated.  I wonder if Compressor 4.1.2 is deciding to use hardware compression at all times.  I tried multi pass, no multi pass, automatically select bit rate, manually set max bit rate, etc.  It just didn't matter, the 4.1.2 Blu-ray disks were "blocky" in places.   The disks were mostly comprised of photographs with almost no movement.  The file size for the bad disk was 197 meg and 478 meg for the good disk when both were created with the "multi pass" setting enabled. That inidcates I had uninstalled 4.1.2 and reinstalled it.  I tried throwing away compressor plists.  I also tried putting Compressor 4.1.2. on another volume that was not polluted with a bunch of installs such are Persion, Avid, etc.  That hardly used volume also produced a low quality Blu-ray.
    I run the software on a 27" 3.5GHz i7 iMac with 16 GB RAM and a 512GB SSD.
The only way I could get back to good disks was to restore a pre-update boot Time Machine volume with Compressor 4.1.1 to an external volume.

File sizes without either bit rate or duration of the movie isn't enough information to go on.
Compressor doesn't use hardware acceleration with mult-pass. But if it did, with content that is essentially static, I would expect little to no difference.
The other piece of the puzzle is the source media file. What is it? What does Media Info or Videospec report?
Finally, how are you evaluating the Blu Ray output?

  • Blu-Ray Export Settings

I am in the process of finishing a Blu-Ray project and I want to export it for Blu-Ray discs. Usually I would 'build' an ISO and burn that to a disc, so my first question is, is that the best way to do it? Export an ISO of the project and then burn that onto discs, or should I burn to discs straight from Encore?
Secondly, should I build a BD-R or a BD-ROM (and would I need different discs?) I want these Blu-Rays to play in most Blu-Ray players if not all. And also, what is BD-ROM content that I can add?
My last question is how do I name the Blu-Ray disc so for example, when someone puts it in their PS3, it says the title of my film instead of "untitled"? Is this something in Encore or in my ISO burning program (providing I burn ISOs)?
    Thanks!

Export an ISO of the project and then burn that onto discs, or should I burn to discs straight from Encore?
Partly because Encore burning effectiveness was poor in the past, many of us have never tested it in CS6. So I much prefer build to image (or folder) and burn with something else (I use ImgBurn).
Secondly, should I build a BD-R or a BD-ROM (and would I need different discs?) I want these Blu-Rays to play in most Blu-Ray players if not all.
The selection of disk type when building to an image is regarding the type of disk you will use. Re the compatibilitgy issue, see this thread, starting with Neil's post at 16:

how do I name the Blu-Ray disc so for example, when someone puts it in their PS3, it says the title of my film instead of "untitled"?
Not where I can check it, but I believe you just have to  name the disk in disk properties. (Select the "disk" in the flowchart, or click in an open area of the project panel.)

  • Blu-Ray export fails.

This is a strange and *very* frustrating problem.
I'll choose Share >> Blu-Ray and select the Output Device as "Hard Drive (Blu-Ray)". Now, this used to work: it would create a disk image. Now, after having made no discernible changes to FCP X or any settings therein, It simply says "failed" as seen here:
I've tried using background rendering and not. I've re-installed FCP X and Compressor.
This is frustrating as ****...it's the last thing keeping me from sending to our client. Any thoughts are much appreciated.

Well, it appears that trashing the .plist files may have worked: it's getting further than it did before. Whatapainintheass.

  • Blu-ray Slideshow Quality

I'm building a slideshow of hi-res 1920x1080 jpegs for Blu-ray. The stock images look great. However, after rendering and playing back in simulation, these images are filled with DV artifacts. I thought that this might just be due to the simulator so I burned a Blu-ray disc. I played this back on our big wide screen display through a Sony Blu-ray player and the artifacts are still there. The settings were for Blu-ray H.264 1920x1080P. Can anyone shed some light on what I may be doing wrong. I would think that with Blu-ray, the images should look equal to the source.
    Thanks,
    Mike

I just figured this out... see my latest post. Change your default codec at the beginning of the project to MPEG2 and the photos will look great. Just make sure to use H264 as the video codec by changing the settings after the video clips are imported.

  • Slight brightening of screen before new credits and scene transitions -- Blu Ray Export

    Hey friends ---
I have an annoying problem and is one of those things that isn't 'glaring' which makes it difficult to find a straight, easy answer to.
After exporting my premiere pro cs5 timeline to bluray mpeg2 and authoring/burning it through encore, I am noticing a VERY annoying 'flicker' or 'brightening' of the black screen right before a new opening credit and even after scene transitions during playback of the final burned bluray disc. It's as if the screen brightens slightly one frame before the new credit or during the first frame of a new shot. Very annoying, and yes, it is subtle but it is very strange -- and whats worse is that it's not consistent. Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't!
Does anyone know what I'm talking about?
My source footage is from a canon 7d, 1920 x 1080p -- film shot at 24 fps. I am burning on BD-R bluray discs and am using my Playstation 3 for playback.
I've attached my bluray exporting settings --- maybe someone knows what's happening here and can help out ?
    Thank you very much !!
    Sincerely,
    -Mark

It's probably your TV. Dynamic contrast features on television are usually the culprit. If you can find and disable the setting for "dynamic contrast" (or something similarly worded) then check it again, that should solve it.
Dynamic contrast isn't terrible when it's implemented more subtley. Larger and more expensive HDTVs usually handle it well. Smaller HDTVs (36" and under, usually 720p sets) are surprisingly bad at this.
It's not a bad thing...it can bring out details in dark scenes and handle highlights better in bright scenes. Generally speaking, the HDTV uses this function to compensate for the shortcomings of the LED/LCD/Plasma screen.
However, if you want constant contrast (to see a movie exactly with the sort of contrast intended by the director, and avoid possible artifacts) then you turn this setting off on your HDTV.
Keep in mind, this isn't something you can control for the end user. It's a hardware setting on HDTVs and is pretty universal (which is why you see things like "1,000,000,0000:1 contrast ratio!!!!!!")
If that doesn't turn out to be your issue, then hopefully someone else can shed some light on it. My bet says this is the problem.

  • Exporting to blu ray and using episode problem

I have a 60 min HDV time line of which I would like to export to Blu Ray ready for the future so I can then delete the master files and clear some space of the main hard drive.
I bought a program by flip 4 mac called Episode Pro which plugs in to compressor and you can use it to export files apparently quicker and better.
Episode has a drop down box with Blu Ray settings for Video and Audio which I choose. so far so good.
When I tell it to export and then bring up the batch monitor it tells me that it take 3 or 4 days and the first try took 3 days and then a message failed came up.
After that I had to reboot because it messed up FCP too
Am I doing something wrong in episode and if I was to use normal compressor for Blu Ray exporting what settings should I use, I only see HD DVD?
    Thank you in advance,

  • Export to Blu-ray from Final Cut Pro 7 with LG BE12LU30 External Blu-ray

    Hi all
I've got an iMac with Snow Leopard and I'm editing HD video in Final Cut Pro 7. I've created AVCHD discs on DVD to play in my Blu-ray player but now I want to create Blu-rays that will play in a regular Blu-ray player.
Has anyone got any experience of using the LG BE12LU30 External Blu-ray Re-Writer with FCP 7? I've checked other posts and it seems one user has had success with an earlier LG Model.
Basically if I connect this drive and use the Final Cut Blu-ray export option in share, will I be able to burn a playable Blu-ray?
Any help would be much appreciated!

Hi I have one of those drives too .. I use FCP to edit export the movie using 'current settings' and then import that movie Compressor .. alternative I also have Toast with the Blu-Ray plugin .. it gives a nice menu template and works well. http://www.roxio.com/enu/products/toast/plugin/overview.html

  • PR and AME 8.1.0 Export H.264 Blu-ray Creates Malformed xmpses File

Posting this here in PR, but this also applies to AME. The bug report was coded to AME. The only symptom may be upon import to Encore. See issue and bug report in this thread: Re: Re: Encore won't import markers with bluray vid output from Premiere through Media Encoder
Bug report filed. This appears to affect H.264 Blu-ray exports from PR 8.1.0 directly or through AME 8.1.0. It does not affect MPEG2 Blu-ray. The only practical symptom identified so far is a failure of files to import to Encore without deleting the xmpses file, which results in loss of chapter markers. A possible workaround is to modify the xmpses file.
Has this already been identified as a bug? Are there any other consequences?

    Hey Kevin -
Having this issue on my new PC. I posted this on the Encore thread too but figured I'd update this thread as well. Hopefully the fix is coming in the next update (8.1.1?) Interestingly, I'm using 8.0.1 right now and I'm in my first week using my new PC (switched last week from long time Mac user) and both projects I exported had this issue. What's strange is that on my PC when exporting projects to the H264 Bluray format I get the xmpses and and xmp file whereas on the mac I only got the xmpses file. Even stranger is that I never had this issue on my Mac and when I bring in a project that I just exported using my mac into Encore on my PC it doesn't give the "error parsing MPEG..." message and all chapter markers come in just fine. These exports were just from last week using the same version of Premiere (8.0.1) I'm using AME 2014.1 though on this new PC whereas I can't remember on my mac if I had updated it yet to 2014.1  I don't think I did. Can't remember and I already wiped and sold it. Anyway, glad to hear the bug has been isolated and hope for a fix real soon. Thank you!

  • DVD & Blu-Ray audio out of sync after export

When I use FCP X's built in DVD or Blu-ray export option, about halfway through the video, the audio becomes out of sync and becomes ahead of the video.
    How can I fix this?

    Freddy,
You will see that I am experiencing the same issue with my DVDs and BDs per my question 3 hours prior to yours.  It never was an issue until very recently.  I may have a solution.  Realizing that my audio was acting as if I had "Drop Frame" audio attached to "Non-Drop Frame" video, I went back to my source material to verify my acquisition settings.  All elements of the production were recorded appropriately as "Drop Frame."  Playback on the "Timeline" (Passé now) was perfect.  No audio sync issues there.  So I felt it must be some rendering setting within Compressor and the render engine.  When you go to Compessor (Send to Compressor), you will gain access to the audio render settings for both DVD & BD.  Typically, the "Retiming" under the "General" tab of the Audio Inspector is set to "100% of source."  I Went ahead and checked off the radio button below that to render the audio at the exact duration of my program (nearly 3 hrs long).  I did this for the DVD version of the program and placed it into DVD Studio Pro to replace the bad sync audio.  Well wudda ya know....it worked.  I haven't burned the DVD yet, but that is next.  I suspect that if this works for the DVD, it may work for the BD render as well.  Wish me luck.  I hope this helps.
On a side note:  If all else fails, render a MASSIVE master file and use that in Toast to make a BD.  Not the best option, but it will get you out the door.

  • Question on Blu ray image size output and reducing the size

    Hi
I have been using encore for blu ray projects which is been proving very helpful. However recently i have had a issue with output size on files. Normally Encore gives me it's estimate that it will fill the disc nicely and provides a image/folder which is about 17-20GB (using 25GB disc) but now out of the blue it's files sizes it outputs has been 24.8GB which technically is less than 25GB but as anyone knows who burns to media, the disc doesn't actually have 25GB of space (something like 23,8 or something, i can't remember without checking). Anyway of course this is a issue because my output size is contantly now coming up to be about 600MB - 1GB over the disc actual size, i figured Encore normally compresses files to fit considering i have burned similar amounts/size media before and never had a issue.
Anyway my issue is the slightly larger file size, i figured the easiest way to reduce the blu ray output size was to of course play with the transcode settings, which usually are set to the default settings for Blu ray (the quality preset is called something like "1280x720p 50 High Quality MPEG-2") so of course i thought to lower the bitrate a little just for a test, so i did just that and cut the default bit rate from 25[Mbs] to 20, i didn't want to lower it too much as it was a test to see what i could save for file size. Anyway so i re-transcoded the file and built another image, sadly the image size oddly enough came out as 26.something GB... so it actually grew in size by reducing the file bitrate which put me at a loss. I was wondering what common ways i could use to lower this file size just by a few hundred MB or up to 1GB in this case without having to remove content from the disc (it would be a waste to not only seperate the content but to use a whole disc for a leftover 600mb-1gb project). I of course want to keep quality as high as possible but i understand when trying to reduce size quality has to normally be hit in these situations so i can deal with a slight loss of quality. I have been browsing the forums here and though some topics seem similar they have the issue of file sizes coming out as 40GB+.
Now im no genius with Encore, normally as said the file size is always between 17-20GB as i figure encore was using a "fit to disc" type feature but because the output size is technically below 25gb but not actually below enough to burn i was wondering 2 things:
    1) is it possible to make encore it's self shrink these files a little more, lowering the target size down by 1GB would do wonders but only option i have seen is to have a 25GB disc or DL disc with no option to customize the output size (forcefully lowering it by 1GB).
    2) because i imagine the above can't be done i was wondering how to go about reducing the size by around 1GB or so, i don't need like 10GB freeing up so it's only a small amount, as said this is a issue i have had with the last few projects i made and the size varies from needing 600MB - 1GB (it doesn't usually exceed needing 1GB free space... besides when i lowered the bit rate which increased size a lot). In the past i always just cut the bitrate of files down a little (never by lots but enough to free space up) but clearly that failed my test so im at a loss of how to reduce file size without a huge loss in quality.
For the record i have already produced the file as both a image file and a folder and both have the same issue.
    Extra info on the project:
It contains 4 Menu's, 13 video files which vary in lengh from short ones at about 5mintues to longer ones which the largest is about 20minutes. I commonly burn this number of video files/space with fine quality and no issue so i would rather not take files from the project.
quality preset details are defaultly as said above set to "1280x720p 50 High quality MPEG-2" settings, i am not on my computer with encore at the moment so i can't post full specifics right now but if you have encore handy you should be able to check.
Tried reducing bit rate but that increased overall size, the actual plan was to hopefully lower the bit rate to around 21 [mbs] (from 25) and then do that for multiple (or all) files until it fitted but after it increased the size i lost hope there, it said the estimated file size (on the individual video) would drop by around 300-400mb  but that didn't work.
I have tried both folder and iso which always come out the same size.
Basically my main question/problem is any suggestion to drop the file size by up to 1GB without taking items out the project or a real high loss in quality (i don't mind small loss though as i can apply whatever solution to all files which should help).
Any suggestions what i can try? as you probably gather im not a genius when it comes to this stuff but i tried including what i thought is relevent.

    Hi and thank you for the reply;
one problem i seem to be having when reducing the bitrate is the file size is oddly increasing from 24.8GB to 26.4GB, i can't really figure this one out as well it's having the oppisite effect. I checked the "streams" folder on output and decided to compare automatic transcoding to manual lowered bitrate and im not too sure where the increased file size is going, i found which video file it was causing the issue, all videos files range or average around 1.6GB each but one file was taking 4.5GB, after lowering that files bitrate it cut it down to 2GB which was of course saving me 2GB from the old file but the overall size had increased which was odd. Seems the other files are all the same so it hasn't tried improving them (so it seems) so i can't make ends of why the size is increasing.
I will try playing with the source file to see if i can do anything that way, if not i will try transcoding in premiere (i have had troubles with this before so i try to avoid it).
Oh and yes i was using Automatic.
Anyway i will see if editing the file outside might help first and see how that works. Thanks again for the reply.
