Blue screen on start up, nothing else. What can I do?

Re: my son's 14" iBook (G3 900 mHz, 10.4.2).
Before doing anything, I repaired permissions, ran all tasks in Mac Janitor.
First I wanted to update to 10.4.3, but got an error message within seconds saying it could not install it. I had downloaded the stand alone update from the Apple site earlier.
The iBook had iTunes 4.9, I believe. Installed iTunes 6.0.1 from stand alone installer. It installed just fine and went to restart to complete the installation. I now get the grey apple screen with the grey spinning thing, and then it goes to a pure light blue screen, no log in window ever appears, no cursor.
Put in the Tiger disk, ran disk utility, clicked repair disk but disk did not need to be repaired. Repaired permissions. Still nothing.
I firewired it to my iMac and got all the items in his user folder out of it. Looking at it, I saw that the iTunes is indeed 6.0.1, and the system still 10.4.2
I restarted the iBook again, and got a BEEP and then the powerlight on the front of the iBook flickered a number of times. Then it started to the blue screen again. It has only done the beep thing once though.
When I boot into safe mode, which works fine, and open System Preferences, I cannot click Accounts, it says "Preferences Error: Could not load accounts". But I am in the user/admin account on this iBook.
Could the iTunes have caused this?
I have had trouble with system updates on this computer before. It is on its 3rd logic board (both times it needed replacement after going for major system updates, Jaguar to Panther and Panther to TIger). Last time, in July, the hard drive was replaced as well.
My Apple dealer here in Costa Rica does not seem to find an underlying problem.
I know I may have to do an archive and install. I am hesitant to do this because everytime I have ever tried to do it on this computer I get a kernel panic and end up having to send it to the dealer which is a hassle because it's 5 hours away and it takes awhile to get it back.
If there is anything anybody can suggest, I - and my son!- will be very grateful...

Joanna-
Since it comes up ok in fire wire target mode and you've backed up everything in /Users, I'd suggest doing a clean install of 10.4, in other words, reformat the hard drive and install 10.4 then the combo updater 10.4.3.
Main catch: any applications that have been installed that would be difficult/impossible to re-install afterwards? You'll need to know where to get them and have the registration keys (if any) available. Also helps if you know how to re-build the apps' customizations/preferences you might have in place (these may just come back from the ~Library/Preferences, but might not).
Also, be sure you have any users documented so you can add them after reinstalling (especially the short names). It's somewhat time consuming but you're certain of getting a clean OS X install that way.
BTW, wasnt there some wide-spread problem with iBook logic boards a couple of revs back that Apple agreed to replace? Was yours part of that?

If you try all these Steps and you still have issues... Then a Visit to an Apple Store or AASP (Authorized Apple Service Provider) is the Next Step... Be sure to make an appointment first...

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.

  • Blue screen on start-up of Leopard

    Aloha!
    And thankyou for any assistance!
I have a MacBook 2.0 GhZ processor, 120 GB hard drive and 2 GB of memory, I purchase this machine in Dec 06...I installed Lepoard a couple of weeks ago. My boot up is about 45 seconds from off to desktop...a little bothersome, tiger booted up in 1/2 the time. The only 3rd party I have installed is Fetch an FTP program and Business Card Composer and I just installed Carbon Copy Cloner...After I installed Leopard I did the upgrades on Fetch and B.C.C.
Does any one know a solution to the slow boot up time and the blue screen..?
Other question is when using the video backgrounds in the iChat the realtime
picture from the icamera is very degraded...dont know if it is the graphics card in the MacBook or the software?
    Many Thanks for your input!!

Are you saying you are getting a blue screen only during the 45 second wait? Or do you sometimes only get a blue screen at startup and nothing else and it doesn't change for over half an hour?
Do you have the latest version Business Card composer here:
    http://www.belightsoft.com/products/composer/overview.php
How much space do you have free on your hard disk?
Have you installed many Dashboard Widgets?
    Is Spotlight running?
Other question is when using the video backgrounds in the iChat the realtime
picture from the icamera is very degraded...dont know if it is the graphics card in the MacBook or the software?
Yes even on a healthy Mac, the video does seem a little degraded. That may be a function simply of how good a "bluescreen" you have behind you when you step out of the screen. If I can get a nice canvas background for the camera to look at, it be improvable but I have none to test it with.

Try resetting the device by pressing the Home and Sleep/Wake button for several seconds, the device should then boot up.

  • I cannot access the internet using firefox. The little toolbar identical (the far upper right in the screen) pops up and nothing else happerns. This has only started very recently and I have not had this problem in the past.

When I click on the icon for firefox, a little toolbar (the one you see in the top right corner of the screen) pops up and nothing else happens. I'll close it out and retry, with only the same results. I tried Firefox safemode, with the same result. Like there is something blocking me, but I don't know what. It doesn't matter if I've been on the computer for some time or just started up, I cannot access the web thru Firefox. This has only started in the last couple days. Previously, I've never had this problem. I haven't loaded any new programs anytime recently to account for this. I use Norton for my anti virus program which is the newest and had since end of December. I am not happy having to use the windows internet explorer, so would be very happy to get this resolved. Should I uninstall the mozilla program, and then reinstall it?

Do you have a "real" IP address or a private (192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x, 172.x.x.x) IP address?
"The wireless router was connected to the company server only for the purpose of getting me online through Airport because I couldn't access it using an ethernet connection"
Could not access it because their network security blocked you by intent, or had some unknown technical difficulty?
Unless you are blocked by intent or ommission (if they have to explicitly allow your machine) I can think of no technical reason why your wired connection should not both get you on their network and on the internet in general. You should not need to be dual homed (though dual homing should work as well).
Please answer the questions above when you can - I think solving the wired LAN issue will be easier if you are not being intentionally blocked.

  • Blue screen at start up,safe mode only, resolved ,what next?

I got the old stuck on blue screen at start up ,
would only boot in safe mode , after two afternoons of RAM test , repairing disk permissions , hrdware tests , zapping PRam and the likes to no avail , I finally resolved the problem thanks to a tip from this forum:
bad video card drivers ( ATIRadeon 8500 ) , after removing them from the extension folder , it boots up! ( I tried to reset the pram , it won't work though , one chime only then nothing).
so I'm wondering what's next , can i reinstall the video card drivers only ?
is it the card itself ? (everything looks normal) or should I go for an archive and install ?
    any input would be great,
    Thanks,
    JB

    Hi-
Jean Baptiste mentioned that he removed extensions for the drivers.
Removing a conflicting driver is fine as long as the driver specific for the card installed remains.
In this case, I think it may have been a corrupt driver, rather than a conflicting driver.
Radeon drivers in OS X have a good track record of compatibility, and such driver conflict is not a historically common occurrence.
Hard drive maintenance with Disk Warrior is the best way to correct corrupt files, unless bad RAM is corrupting the files.....
In your case, it shouldn't hurt anything to remove the Radeon 8500 drivers.
Could it be the driver extensions that are preventing a proper boot. The monitor displays perfectly in safe mode so I don't understand why it would be the video card.
Booting to Safe mode unloads drivers. Only very basic core graphics rendering drivers are loaded.
No Quartz/Quartz Extreme, no Core Image, no 3D acceleration, etc.
This doesn't tax a graphics card.
Failure to boot, or failure of graphics when drivers are loaded are due to one of two things- corrupt drivers or failing components on the graphics card.
A reinstall of the OS can rule out the first.
Installing a different graphics card is the only way to rule out the second.
Before buying a new card, I would try a fresh OS.
Installing a new OS on a separate drive, and booting to that is an easy way to test.

  • What would cause a prolonged blue screen during start up?

I have an iMac desktop.  Recently I've had trouble with a prolonged blue screen during start up (approx. 10 mins) before it finally takes me to the login screen.  Any ideas why this is happening?

    Hi Jeff,
Open console in Applications>Utilities, check the system log for the date/time of the last problem Startup for clues.

No, you don't have a virus, but if that folder has a flashing '?', it means your Mac can't find its' system:

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
iChat does not close when you use the red button to close windows as some other apps do.
This means iChat can be running but not showing any windows (including any Buddy Lists).
If you set up iChat it will have at least one Buddy List.
Open iChat and go to the Window menu
In here you will see any Buddy List that is Logged in.
Selecting that item or using the keystrokes next to it will show you the Buddy List.
In Tiger/iChat 3 Apple Key and 1 would open the AIM Buddy List, Apple + 2 the Bonjour List (If active) and Apple + 3 any Jabber Buddy list.
As Leopard allows you to log several Screen names in to AIM or Jabber the list can be as mixed up as you want (or Created)
The Order can be changed in iChat menu > Preference > Accounts by dragging the list into the order you want.
    My Window menu
    The Accounts Prefs List

I may receive some form of compensation, financial or otherwise, from my recommendation or link.

I'm trying to install windows 8 on mac, but after partitioning and restarting, it stucks on blue logo and i waited 20 minutes but nothing happened, what can i do, please help.

I think there's some remmants left over from when Apple transferred stuff over. We can try a quick fix, but if that doesn't work, I think the only option is to clean install OSX and then install Windows.
open disk utility, confirm that you only have 1 partition (mac journaled)
    restart and PRAM reset
open disk utility and repair permissions twice
    restart boot camp assistant
    Does it work?
If not, I would boot holding command+R, choose disk utility from the menu and completely erase your HD (formatting it as mac journaled again). Then, install OSX on this HD. Once OSX is installed, don't copy your files over from the backup yet. Instead, start boot camp assistant and see if you can get Windows installed. You can copy back your other files after we get Windows installed.

  • Blue Screen on start up with dual monitors

I have a macpro running Mac OS X 10.5.6 (9G55) when 2 monitors are hooked up to it the computer the machine Blue Screens on start up. This also occurs when the computer wakes up from a deep sleep. Currently the only work around is to just use one monitor. Ive read the posting here and on macosrumors.com, but there does not seem to be a solution, however most post are from last summer. Was this fixed at some point? Is there a solution? I also tried boot from another drive (from another macpro) with both monitors hooked up and the problem continues.
Ive also read the KB article and removed ApplicationEnchancer.bundle, but the problem continues.

    Scott,
Ok here are the next things on my list, and I will start with what I think is the most valuable to the just plain fun and simple you and I would be shocked if it fixed it. I only skimmed your other post, if you feel that something I recommend is a repeat you can ignore it and I will not take any offense. Sorry If my post is a little loopy I've been up for way to long.
    1) Safe Boot your mac. To do so hold shift whilst your Mac boots. Please note it will take longer to load.
Starting up into Safe Mode does several things:
    1. It forces a directory check of the startup volume.
    2. It loads only required kernel extensions (some of the items in /System/Library/Extensions).
    3. In Mac OS X 10.3.9 or earlier, Safe Mode runs only Apple-installed startup items (such items may be installed either in /Library/StartupItems or in /System/Library/StartupItems; these are different than user-selected account login items).
    4. It disables all fonts other than those in /System/Library/Fonts (Mac OS X 10.4 or later).
    5. It moves to the Trash all font caches normally stored in /Library/Caches/com.apple.ATS/(uid)/ , where (uid) is a user ID number such as 501 (Mac OS X 10.4 or later).
    6. It disables all startup items and login items (Mac OS X 10.4 or later).
    7. Mac OS X 10.5.6 or later: A Safe Boot deletes the dynamic loader shared cache at (/var/db/dyld/). A cache with issues may cause a blue screen on startup, particularly after a Software Update. Restarting normally recreates this cache.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564
    2) Try reseting the Pram.
    Resetting PRAM and NVRAM
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    3. Turn on the computer.
    4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    6. Release the keys.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
    3) Reset the startup Disk. Open System Preferences -> Startup Disk -> Select Mac OS X.
I'll leave you with that, please come back with your results.
    Weston
