Blurry DVD's

I have a new macbook pro. I've tried all kinds of ways to make a slideshow DVD and they all look fine until I burn them. The DVD's look like there is a thin sheet of water cascading over the pictures. I have done 4 one on one's and just today a visit to the Genius Bar. After all of this, the 'genius' tells me that it's I-DVD. He says it's a cheap program and that's the best I can expect?! My photos are very good and the slide shows look and sound great. But as soon as I burn them, they always com eout the same. I've used Iphoto, Imovie, with all different settings. So have the trainers at the apple store.
Can it really be true that the idvd program is that bad?

People,
iDVD uses MPEG-2 compression. The images are going to look different. They will look bad on flat panel TVs or most LCD computer monitors, like your MacBook Pro and my PowerBook G4. Even commercial DVDs look poor on my PowerBook.
My projects look fine on my Sony CRT 34" XBR960 HDTV played through HDMI.

  • BLURRY DVDS

USING PREMIERE CS4 AND MATROX RT.X2 CARD FOR CAPTURING- Captrued look great on composite tv and computer monitor- when using dynamic link (or manual export to Encore) and burn DVD, regardless of quality of input, all dvds are blurry- no definition- nothing fancy here, but have I just forgotten a setting? Have been using Premiere 1.5 and older matrox card with encore 1.5 for years with great success- recently upgraded computer and all software- its like I've gone backwards---- this item cross posted in DVD lounge as well- any answers appreciated-- help!
(BTW, Gaussian Blur settings are not in play here)
    Henry

I can't think of any settings that would cause this.  Even too low a bitrate is more likely to cause blocking than blurring.
What I can say is that the MainConcept encoder that comes with the Adobe suite just isn't the best out there.  I've gotten noticeably better results using the free HC Encoder to create the MPEG2 assets.

  • Blurry DVD's burned in iDVD

All my iDVD's turn out blurry. Does anyone have a remedy for this?
    *My Movie:*
An animation made in individual frames in Photoshop CS3.
    I started in Photoshop using the video preset "HDV/HDTV 720p 29.97" 1280x720.
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: Square Pixels
I imported the the final frames as an "Image Sequence" into QuickTime Pro.
I exported the animation at 16:9 using an the "Animation" Codec at the highest quality on all settings.
The final video is a .mov and it is 4 min long.
The video looks great if I play it through QuickTime.
It looks awful if I make a DVD of it (especially the text)
    *My iDVD Settings:*
    Video Mode: NTSC
    Encoding: Professional Quality
    DVD Type: Single-Layer(SL)- 4.2 GB
    Aspect Ratio: 16:9
    *My Computer:*
Brand new imac. Latest updated version of iDVD.
    What am I doing wrong?
Any help on how to make a sharp looking DVD would be very much appreciated!

    Hi
    My guess.
You are using. Share/Export to iDVD from within iMovie. (iMovie will render)
    Result
    • Severly pixelated DVD movie
    • Original iMovie project is HARMED
    Medicine
    • Re-import Your photos and re-edit Your movie (SORRY I have no better tasting medicine)
    • CLOSE iMovie
    • Open iDVD and start a new project
    • Import Your iMovie project
    • iDVD - WILL NOW DO THE RENDERING and so much better
*More to read about iDVD quality.*
    DVD quality
    1. iDVD 8 has three levels of qualities.
iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    • Professional Quality (movies up to 120 min.) - BEST
    • Best Performances (movies less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD
    • High Quality (in iDVD08) / Best Quality (in iDVD6) (movies up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
    2. From
    • FCE/P - Export out as full quality QuickTime.mov (not selfcontaining, no conversion)
    • iMovie x-6 - Don't use ”Share/Export to iDVD” = destructive even to movie project and especially so
when the movie includes photos. Instead just drop or import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window.
    • iMovie’08 not meant to go to iDVD. Go via Media Browser or rather use iMovie HD 6 from start.
    3. I use Roxio Toast™ to make an as slow burn as possibly eg x1 (in iDVD’08 this can also be set)
This can also be done with (Apple) Disk Util tool.
    4. There has to be about or more than 25Gb free space on internal (start-up) hard disk. iDVD can't
use an external one as scratch disk (if it is not start-up disc).
    5. Verbatim ( also recommended by many - Taiyo Yuden DVDs - I can’t get hold of it to test )
    6. DVD-R (no +R or +/-RW)
    7. Keep NTSC to NTSC - or - PAL to PAL when going from iMovie to iDVD
    8. Don’t burn more than three DVD at a time - but let the laser cool off for a while befor next batch.
    iDVD quality also depends on:
    • HOW much free space is there on Your internal (start-up) hard disk. Go for approx 25Gb.
less than 5Gb and Your result will most probably not play.
    • What kind of movie project You drop into it. MPEG4 seems to be a bad choice.
other strange formats are .avi, .wmv, .flash etc. Convert to streamingDV first
Also audio formats matters. I use only .aiff or from miniDV tape Camera 16-bit
strange formats often problematic are .avi, .wmv, audio from iTunes, .mp3 etc
Convert to .aiff first and use this in movie project
    • What kind of standard - NTSC movie and NTSC DVD or PAL to PAL - no mix.
(If You need to change to do a NTSC DVD from PAL material let JESDeinterlacer3.2.2 do the conversion)
(Dropping a PAL movie into a NTSC iDVD project
(US) NTSC DVDs most often are playable in EU
(EU) PAL DVDs most often needs to be converted to play in US
UNLESS: They are plabacked by a Mac - then You need not to care
    • What kind of DVDs You are using. I use Verbatim DVD-R (this brand AND no +R or +/-RW)
    • How You encode and burn it. Two settings prior iDVD08
    Pro Quality (only in iDVD08)
Best / High Quality (not always - most often not)
Best / High Performances (most often my choise)
    1. go to iDVD pref. menu and select tab far right and set burn speed to x1 (less errors = plays better) - only in iDVD08
    2. Project info: Select Professional Encoding - only in iDVD08.
    Region codes:
iDVD - only burn Region = 0 - meaning - DVDs are playable everywhere
DVD Studio pro can set Region codes:
    1 = US
    2 = EU

  • Blurry DVD menu

I just bought Adobe premiere elements 11. i set up my project as an SD Widescreen NTSC from a Hard Disk Drive video camera source. I choose one of the DVD menus from the Tools. There is no way in Tools to select whether you want a SD or HD menu. So I just selected one appropriate for my movie. Well, when I preview the DVD, I understand that it is a quick preview and not going to be perfect, but the menu comes up. Clear at first, then it changes from a standard to widescreen format and then gets extrememly blurry. Even when i burn my DVD, it is really blurry. I am not very good with the technical side of the program or the video camera, but I could use all the help I can get. Your help is very appreciated. Thank you.

    oliph002help
I have seen what you are talking about with regard to previewing of the disc menu in the Movie Menu section of a Premiere Elements 11 Windows project. But in the burned to disc for that project, I have not seen any problems in the DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc produced for this project (menu included)..
There is no way in Tools to select whether you want a SD or HD menu.
Setting of the project preset determines what Movie Menu theme set will be available to you. If you have a HD project, there will be mainly HD menus waiting for you in Movie Menu. If SD project settings, you will have either a "s" or "w" set waiting for you. In the latter case, you cannot presume which you will get when you select "w". The program may use the "w" version but often does not, using the "s" version.
(I am using "s" to represent standard, "w" to represent widescreen, and "hd" to represent high definition).
What specific menu or menus is/are presenting in the DVD-VIDEO playback as blurry? Is it just text or everything? Are you customizing the menus in Movie Menu section? If so, how are you customizing them? What are you using as your player(s)?
    Lots of questions to explore.
Please review and supply some further details.
    Thanks.
    ATR
In the case of those menus not marked HD, the only way to know if you are getting "s" or "w" is to read the Notepad document of the saved project.prel file.

  • Blurry DVD!

I'm having a serious problem of having blurry images on DVDs made using iDVD, especially whenever there is movement. Around the movement, you see lines and pixelation. I'm exporting from Final Cut Express, and I've tried multiple different settings in the Quicktime Conversion and after reading all the suggestions of using the Quicktime Movie export method instead of the Quicktime Conversion, I've been trying that but I still have the same problem. This is driving me batty. I never used to have this problem when I exported from FCE to mpeg2 and then used DVD Studio Pro for my DVD authoring, but the version I have of that program is old and due to it being bundled with the FC studio now, I can't upgrade it. I give a big thumbs down to the fact that I can't purchase DVDSP by itself now, but that's a story for another time. Anyway, I figured I'd try using iDVD but so far the DVDs I've burned have been blurry and unacceptable. Why in the name of all that is holy did Apple decide to make it so you can't export to mpeg2 with iDVD? That just makes no sense to me. It seems like they're created an extra step doing it this way, not to mention a lot of extra hassle to actually make your DVD look decent. This is supremely frustrating.
This particular project is about an hour and 25 minutes. Is the length an issue? Anybody have any other recommendations? Thanks in advance!

OK, I finally got a decent image using the QT conversion and the animation setting. It creates a HUGE QT file but the resulting DVD looks OK. Then that DVD started randomly freezing which sent me back to the drawing board. So I basically started over and tried the export to QT method from FCE that everybody always says is how it's supposed to be done - not using QT conversion, just a straight export to QT reference file.
And lo and behold it worked right this time. Why it worked this time and hasn't worked on other occasions I have no idea, but it did. The DVD made from this file worked just fine with no freezing or other weirdness.
There is however, one issue that I still need to resolve. There did seem to be a slight decrease in quality on the new DVD in comparison to DVDs made using my old DVDSP 1.5. The image is a little "softer" and not quite as sharp, even though the footage was shot using the same cameras. Does anybody know of anything about this? Has anyone ever compared DVDs created using iDVD and DVDSP in relation to their quality? Would a DVD created using these two programs but containing the same footage look significantly different? I guess now what I'm trying to decide is if I need to bite the bullet and upgrade to the FCP suite. Thanks so much for any information and for all the past help. What can I do to maximize the image quality of my DVDs created in iDVD? Or is this a limitation of iDVD? Would I be better off going ahead and buying the whole FCP suite so I can get the latest DVDSP? Thanks in advance for any assistance and for taking the time to read all this!

  • Premiere CS4 to Encore CS4 Export  Quality Problems

I recently purchased a non-linear editing machine with an RTX2 Matrox Card and CS4 Professional. After six or seven projects, I finally noticed that all my imported .avi files exported through Adobe Media Encoder and burned through Encore CS4 are not as crisp, sharp, or look like the original high quality SD footage after the DVD is burned like it always used to look in CS2. ( jumped from CS2 to CS4)
These DVDs were of plays, football, and basketball games. It seems that when the camera shoots a close up, the video looks fine but after you shoot from a distance, there is a considerable difference in the footage. ( alomost blurry) I just caught this and nobody has complained but I watched one of my older DVDs I produced with CS2 and it had no quality loss whatsoever. There is a night and day difference
For the sequences, I am using Matrox SD, NTSC, Standard, 720 x 486  and capturing with firewire through the Matrox card. The raw footage is beautiful. The Video Preview Option is NTSC Standard and the Codec is NTSC Matrox DV/DV Cam.
I can playback a timeline from the Matrox card and burn directly to a DVD burner and the footage is perfect, but when I export, I have chosen Microsoft .avi file, Matrox DV/DV Cam/ MPEG2, and MPEG2DVD.
I have even changed the sequences codec to Matrox MPEG-2 I-Frame and tried exporting using that out of Adobe Media Encoder and am getting the same results.
None of my customers have complained yet, but I definitely do not want to continue producing almost blurry DVDs.
I am using Adobe Premiere CS4 Version 4.1.0 and Encore CS4 Version 4.0.1.048 and Matrox Version 4.1.0.23
Can this problem be related to and eliminated by updating my CS4 Production Suite and my Matrox Software.
I was wondering if anyone had experienced this same issue and what solution they came up with or if anyone knew if the updates would correct this important issue. I just filmed a lengthy play that I have to author through Encore CS4 and I cannot release any more of my productions until this problem is solved. This is a big dollar production and I need some assistance on this matter as soon as possible. Thanks  Jimi White

Thanks for taking the time to help me out. I just purchased my non-linear with CS4 Production Suite and the Matrox RTX2. I have several projects that I am working on right now and I was advised by Adobe, Matrox, and my non-linear vendor, 1 Beyond, to finish those projects before performing updates.
I also found out that If I export using the MPEG2  8Mbps, it cleared up the video dramatically. We had to go through a number of export presets in order to find out what worked best in Encore. I am going to try to finish the project now and will advise on the results.
This is a basketball highlight DVD and that's when I noticed the problem. My other productions were photos to music, and non sporting events and I didn't notice any problems with those DVDs ( they actually looked decent. Worst part about it was, I finished the project once and burned 18 DVDs, and then reviewed one of them and found the problem. I have to start over and just eat the DVDs printed and all.
Thanks again, it was nice of you to get back to me.

  • Premiere Elements 11 - Can't read my menu/scenes under preview

When I preview the menu the menu and scenes show up for about 5 seconds and then they become unreadable.  They are blurry.  When I burn DVD you can see the writing for the menu/scenes but can't tell what it says.

    Jodie
    Thanks for the follow up.
No. Did they charge you $40 for that "corrupt menu" diagnosis?
What did you purchase,  the boxed packaging with installation disc or downloaded installation files from Adobe?
In the past, blurry DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc (the menus and the video) was periodically corrected by an uninstall reinstall of the program. But, I had never run into a situation where menus were signaled out leaving the video portion OK in those particular cases.
Be that as it may, let us get to work on the audio situation. What is the duration of the audio file that you are adding to the menu? And which menu..also main and scene or audio just to main? Is this happening with all audio or just this file?
This is where I am heading on this to rule in or out. No matter how great the duration of the audio that you add to those menus, you are only going to get 30 seconds looping. Recently a user questioned why only 13.4 sec instead of 30 for the Christmas menu. That was explained in my blog post
    http://www.atr935.blogspot.com/
The point to my mention of 30 sec looping max, is the possibility that the addition of audio with a long duration may be creating the issue.
Another factor is format. Are you working with, .mp3 or .wav for the audio addition to the menu?
Bottom lines for troubleshooting purposes at this time
    a. try to use an audio with shorter duration...closer to 30 seconds
    b. if you are using .mp3 audio, convert it to .wav in iTunes or other.
    More later.
Looking forward to your follow up.
    Thanks.

  • LiveType Credit Roll Text Blurry Shaking in DVD Studio Pro Completed SD

I first created text scrolling directly from inside FCP. The texts appear shaking/blurry in the exported MOV. After trying different font family/size but still getting the same bad result, I did more research. I then created the credit roll in LiveType, imported that into FCP. This time, the exported finished MOV looks great on computer. I thought this is the right fix but after I got everything done in DVD Studio Pro and burned a SD to test on my 50" screen SONY, the credit roll part is again shaking and blurry!! This really drove me nuts!! Well, other texts that I created both in FCP and LiveType appear just fine!! I am trying to export the credit roll texts part as self-contained mov then import back to FCP but really suspect this will fix the problem.
That part of rolling credit texts were shaking in DVD Pro simulation but I thought that's only becuase it was not the final product. Any help will be greatly appreciated!
p.s. I spent the past few hours googling and tried different methods but still had no luck...:(
    Thanks in advance!

Ok...I just export a MOV with ONLY the credit roll encoded using QuickTime conversion, change the compression type to Uncompressed 8-Bit 4:2:2 which was supposed to retain the graphic/text quality better than normal setting. The completed credit roll still look shaking, however. It's white text on black, yeah I know not the best combo but there must be a way to get the text to not shake/blur...no?
    Please help, if anyone could.
    Many thanks...

  • Blurry Text from DVD Studio Pro

Hello, I've created 4 'slide show' type presentations in motion 2. Project settings are:
    Width: 1360
    Height: 768
    Bit Depth: 8 Bit
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: HD (960x720, 1440x1080) 1.33
    Field Order: None
    Frame Rate:59.94 fps
    Render Settings:
    Motion Blur: Samples: 8
    Shutter Angle: 360
    Output: Antialiasing Method: Best
I've tried many many compression settings:
    MPEG-2 6.2Mbps 2-pass 16/9.m2v
    Uncompressed 10-bit NTSC.mov
Importing raw motion files into DVD Studio Pro
All of the resulting dvds burned from DVD Studio pro look pixelated and blurry when played on a dvd player onto a Toshiba 32HL86. Unfortunately its an SD dvd player connectedt to the tv, so not sure if that has a major impace.
    DVD Studio Pro Settings are:
    Project: SD DVD
    Video Standard: NTSC
    General:
SD DVD Menus, Tracks and Slideshows:
    Display Mode: 16:9 Letterbox
    Encoding:
    MPEG-2-SD
    Aspect Ratio: 16:9
    Field Order: Auto
    Mode: One PAss VBR
    Bit Rate: 6.8
    Max Bit Rate: 8.0
    Motiion Estimation: Best
I am at my wits end, can somebody tell me what I'm doing wrong?

I'm not an expert, but have recently had similar problems with graphics that had text, black lines, lots of contrast, and movement. They looked great on HD but when I made a SD DVD, they were very blocky and pixellated - completely unusable. After lots of experimentation, I've finally got an acceptable dvd. Went back to my original shots - in Final Cut, (I'm not sure if you can do this in Motion) and carefully applied a little Gaussian Blur (.25 to1) to each according to how badly they pixellated. Also adjusted blacks and whites so they weren't so contrasty. Then made my mpeg with Compressor - two pass vbr, 6.8 mbps, best motion estimator. The Gaussian Blur seems to break up the areas that get blocked up and pixelated. SD dvd is such a lousy low resolution medium anyway, that it doesn't seem to result in any focus problems and helped most shots - I've even gone back and applied it to some of the regular footage that was pixellating. It was a lot of work, you may want to see if an expert weighs in on this.

  • I finally was successful in burning a CD of a slideshow I created in iPhoto, however, it is blurry. What is the best way to burn to a CD or DVD for clarity. Also, I realize if burned in iPhoto it will only be playable in iPhoto. Help! This is needed soon!

I finally was successful in burning a CD of a slideshow I created in iPhoto, however, it is blurry. What is the best way to burn to a CD or DVD for clarity. Also, I realize if burned in iPhoto it will only be playable in iPhoto. Help! This is needed soon for a wedding reception!

What version of iPhoto are you using?  How do you plan to view the slideshow at the wedding reception, on a TV screen?  If so then you will need to send the slideshow to iDVD and burn a disk from there.
If you're in iPhoto 11 and the slideshow was created in the slideshow mode and not from an album, then go to the Share menu and select iDVD.  That will create a QT movie of the slideshow and import it into iDVD.
In iDVD select your theme and setup the menu as you'd like.  If you want the movie to begin plahying immediately when the disk is inserted into the DVD player go into the Gallery mode and drag the movie into the Autostart  bin at the left.
If you want the movie to loop continuously go to the Advanced menu and select Loop.
When you're finished setting upb the iDVD project save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option. This will allow you to check it with DVD Player before tryingto burn to disk.  Mount the disk imnage by double clicking on it and launch DVD Player and play.  If the movie plays as you want and everything is good you can  burn to disk with Disk Utility at the slowest speed available to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatium, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • DVD playback blurry with Kaffeine/Xine

    Hi guys,
I wanted to watch my first DVD under Linux yesterday and I noticed that the image quality is really, really bad compared to watching the same DVD under Windows with PowerDVD.
DVD playback in Kaffeine with Xine engine is really blurry. Does anybody know what the reason could be? There's a lot of options for xine engine parameters in Kaffeine, but I don't have a clue about them. Any tipps appreciated.
I've also tried kmplayer, but the image there has small black horizontal lines in it, which looks really weird. I thinks that's called interlaced, right? I'm a total video noob. ^^

  • Quality of slideshow on dvd very blurry

Hi I used iPhoto to create a slideshow of my son with ken burns effect. When I play the slideshow in iPhoto, it is silky smooth. But when I use iDVD to burn the slideshow to DVD and play back the slideshow on a DVD player and normal TV set, the ken burns effect is very blurry and you can see the individual pixels as the image pans. Can anyone help me on how to create a slideshow on DVD which has as good quality as that when played in iPhoto?
Macbook Black   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   30GB iPod Video Black

    linusloo:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I'm not surprised because the images have to go thru two rendering/encoding processes when done that way. iPhoto converts it to a QT movie then rendering the images to a different size and pixel type, from square to rectangle (or it may be the other way around). Then when encoded by iDVD it gets further compressed to fit on the DVD disk.
I found the best image quality is obtained by importing the still photos into iDVD and creating the slideshow entirely in iDVD. You can't have the KB effect and can only have one transition per slideshow buy the image quality, IMO, if much better. Also iDVD lets you add titles and/or comments at the bottom of any slide you choose.

  • BIG Encore problem - Interactive dvd based on menus - blurry menus

Hi, I am making a DVD based on clickable menus. The idea is to create a DVD portfolio, where the user can click through different screens, a lot of them with images, some only videos. I am creating the menus in photoshop - using rather small text. When the menus are imported to Encore, they look ok in the editing mode, but in the preview, the text gets blurry and unreadable - this also happens to some extent with the bigger text, edges also get very pixeled. The format I am working with is 1280 x 720, 72dpi (but i guess the dpi doesn't matter when it's video), RGB color, PAL widescreen square pixel... I have tried a lot of different formats, both bigger and smaller, but it doesn't get better. I have tried to do this in so many different ways now, but simply cannot find a solution - which seems strange to me, as I have seen DVD menus before with small type, without it being blurry (for example describing different episodes of a TV show) - Is there another program that would be better for this project, as I am also worried that the images will be very pixelated... I also tried to export the project, but it is still blurry. Another problem I have, is that the highlights of text buttons appear a few pixels left of the original button - I used the correct layer names, and only text in one color. the highlight is white. I hope someone can help me with this!

Why are you starting with 1280x720 PS files when you are trying to create a 720x576 PAL SD DVD?  The downscaling alone would account for your quality loss.

  • Can anyone help me burn a DVD without the text being too blurry to read?

I Produce software tutorials with Camtasia Studio and need to burn them to a DVD with an interactive menu.  Every time I have tried, the text areas are too blurry to read.  Any ideas?  I tried CyberLink Power Director 13 and had the same problems.

Check the resolution of the menu vs. the primary "movie",  I had a similar issue and determined the menu was at a lower res, which once everything was assembled and burned gave me a very uncrisp menu even though it was blu-ray.  Once I changed the resolution of the menu to match the primary content, it was very crisp.  Just a quick thought.

  • PE 10 - DVD Menu is very "aliased" or blurry?

So, the smaller you go with this, the better it looks. Here is the image, but I have uploaded a full-size image to flickr to show the true blurriness. This is a screenshot of the burned DVD, not the PE10 project: http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6229/6324864256_d03f059813_b.jpg
Is this because I chose widescreen DVD output? or maybe because I used a large picture for the background? Should I try a different font? what gives?
I noticed the aliasing when I was designing the menu - it was there when I previewed no matter what. I just figured it was downsampling to use less memory or something but that it would render in full-quality. It obviously didn't - anyone have any ideas? I am just getting to know the program and figured I would try slapping together a DVD for my brother-in-law's wedding from last year.

    Ted,
You are correct. Way back when, DVD looked fabulous, compared to VHS, or Beta. That was then, and this is now. Then, TV's were all CRT, and with pretty low rez. Now, most are HD with resolutions that were not even thought of, when DVD was introduced. Nowadays, DVD looks pretty bleak, compared to BD, though I have to say that modern players w/ up-rezzing chips, do an astounding job of making DVD's look better than ever - but still far short of BD.
For Titles and Menu Text in DVD, there are some useful links in this ARTICLE. One of the best discussions on Text in the DV format, is no longer available - the server is gone. Wish that I had made a copy of that, as it went into so much useful detail.
    Good luck,
