Book Chapter and Section Numbering

Hi,
I've been through the tutorials and cannot seem to find a solution to my problem. Maybe I'm missing something simple here. Basically, I'm writing a book and want each chapter in a separate document with contiguous section numbering. e.g.
Document 1.
Chapter 1
   Section 1.1
       Section 1.1.1
       Section 1.1.2
            Section 1.1.2.1
   Section 1.2
       Section 1.2.1
       Section 1.2.2
Document 2.
Chapter 2
   Section 2.1
       Section 2.1.1
       Section 2.1.2
            Section 2.1.2.1
   Section 2.2
       Section 2.2.1
       Section 2.2.2
If I define the Chapter as a Section heading with a level 1 hierarchy and each sub-section with level 2, 3, 4, etc hierarchy, the above works fine within each document, but section numbering always stays at 1 in each document and doesn't increment when I make the book i.e all chapters remain at Chapter 1 within each document.
If I use the Chapter text variable, chapter numbering updates, but the section numbering isn't linked to the chapter number e.g. Section 2.1 in document 2 now becomes Section 0.1, since there is now no level 1 Section heading defined.
Please help,
Thanks.

Hello Eugene,
Thank you for the response. I actually ended up defining the Chapter as a level 1 section in Bullets and Numbering, but made it a new list called Section which is continuous across documents in the book.
This works great. Everytime a new chapter is added, numbering needs to be updated in the book panel.

  • Not able to edit the words "chapter" and "section" in the document workflow

    Hi all,
I would like to point out something that could be a bug. The 2 words "chapter" and "section" are not editable in the document workflow: I can just change the title for each chapter and the title for each section, but I am not able to change the words "chapter" and "section".
The problem is, iBooks Author is using the words "chapter" and "section" (heading 1) to build the TOC: if I am using iBooks Author in English, but I am writing a text in French, I am not able to change "Chapter" into "Chapitre". The only way to go, what I found out, is to close the app, change the OSX Lion system language, log out, re-open iBooks Author and start a new book: opening an English book  in the French version of iBooks Author will not change automatically the language in the workflow.
Does anybody has a trick to edit the words "chapter" and "section"?
    Best regards,
    Mauro

    Hi KT,
Thank you, but it's still in english.
I changed to "only number", then wrote the word "chapter" in french or italian or german before the number, then deleted the preview on the iPad and made a new preview, I still have the same result: the word "chapter" is still in the language of the app.
To be clear: I am writing a text using iBooks Author in italian. I have to translate the same text in french, the fastest way would be to rework the italian version (I already have all the multimedia stuff inside). I changed the italian word "Capitolo" (chapter) to the french one "Chapitre" (using the advices of AodhFFXI and K T). And for the first slide of the chapter that's fine.
But if I "close down" the first chapter slide or if I click on the top left botton to go to the chapter TOC, there I still have the word in italian, even if the word has been deleted in the layout:

  • AGMac-Change "Chapter" and "Section" concepts...

    Hello,
I started a new book in iBooks Author 2.0 and I renamed the chapter header in my language (Greek)...
In any iBooks document there are also the concepts of "Chapter" and "Section"...
For example in the "Table of contents" exists at the top "Chapter 1"...
How can I change the concept "Chapter" in the iBooks document in order to use it translated in my language in all the appearances in the book? I need the same for the "Section" also...
Thank you for your time and help...

  • Table of Contents and Section Numbering ??s

Hi, we are using CS6 and have a couple questions about trying to use automated section numbering and table of contents in a single document. We don’t do this often (actually, never used auto-TOC before), so I just want to see if I’m missing something obvious.
SECTION NUMBERING WITH SECTION INTRO PAGES
Our document (a style guide) is divided into sections. Each section begins with a section intro title page, which is basically just a blank page with the new section’s title nicely styled. We are setting up our sections as 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. And we would REALLY prefer for the page numbering to be ’1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, etc.’, where X.0 is the section intro page.
    1) I can add the sections OK with a prefix of 1., 2., etc. But InDesign does not allow me to start the section numbering at ’0′, it must be ’1′. So my intro pages HAVE to be 1.1, 2.1, 3.1, etc. instead of 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 etc. Any creative workaround to solve this??? We really don’t want the intro pages to be X.1, as they have no content and we want the X.1 page to be the first with content on it, NOT X.2. How do people generally handle a section intro page?
    AUTO PAGE NUMBERS AND TOC
We are trying to use the automated Table of Content feature and running into an odd issue. We have page titles on top of each page in a unique paragraph style (H1). We are adding the page number at the beginning of this paragraph using ‘Type > Marker > Current Page Number’ and a unique character style. It’s working fine on the pages, showing the appropriate section numbering we setup for the document (e.g., 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4, etc.).
But when we make the table of contents, the ‘page numbers’ at the beginning of the titles are coming in as absolute numbers (e.g., 7, 8 , 9, 10, 11, etc.) instead of our section numbering. I checked the General Preferences, and it is set to ‘View: Section Numbering’. And when I exported an interactive PDF, the bookmarks also add the absolute page number at the beginning of the titles as in the TOC. But if I set the TOC to include page numbers automatically, those DO display correct section numbers (they just precede or follow our titles with the incorrect numbering).
    2) Any ideas why the TOC and PDF Bookmarks would be picking up absolute numbering while the actual titles on the pages show the proper section numbering?
    THANKS!

    Peter Spier wrote:
I've never tried adding a second marker to a paragraph like that. Why not use a numbered list instead?
Just checking in here. Not sure I understand what you mean about using a numbered list. Do you mean instead of the page numbers in the titles, or instead of the Table of Contents? Not sure how either could be automated to stay in sync with adding/removing pages and creating the TOC links and bookmarks in our PDFs.
    - Is there a bug when the TOC pulls the specified title paragraphs and they have page numbers in them?
Thanks. Still trying to see if we're doing something wrong as this is the first we've played with TOC.

  • Setting chapter and sections after importing text document?

I imported a 120-page Word document in Author. The original was 10 chapters and related sections. It came in as a single long chapter. Now I want to manually select a page and set it to be chapter 2, chapter 3, etc., and likewise for selecting a page and setting it to section 2-1, section 2-2, etc.
I can't see how to do this. Adding a chapter always puts it at the end of my 120 pages. If I insert a blank page, I can't set it to be a chapter or section.
Am I missing something, or am I using an incorrect workflow?
    Any advice gratefully received.

  • Chapter-section numbering

Hi - having strange issue with Chapter and section numbering (not page numbers). For example, Chapeter 1, then a 1 -1, 1 - 2,etc. Working in CS5 on Win7 platform.
In the Bullets and Numbering section of the style sheet for Chapter Head:
    List type: Numbers
    List: [Default] Level: 1
    Numbering style: Format - 1,2,3,4,
    Number: Chapter ^#:^t
    Character Style: None
Mode: Start At: Continue From Previous Numbers
    for the Section Sub-head:
    List type: Numbers
    List: [Default] Level: 2
    Numbering style: Format - 1,2,3,4,
    Number: Chapter ^H - ^#:^t
    Character Style: None
Mode: Start At: Continue From Previouse Numbers
Restart Numbers at This Level is checked.
For some reason, the Cpater numbering jumped over Chapt 5 to 6. I rechecked the doc several times, no chapter 5 being applied anywhere. Then my Sections got messed up....and now Chapter 1 shows Sections 6 -1, 6 -2, etc.
I know I could convert these to text, but what a pain.
Any insights would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

I may have answered this myself:
The subhead section should have used a number code thusly: ^1 - ^#.^t , where the ^1
indicates the sirst level (Chapter Head).
    Wow - a little confusing....

  • Chapter/Section Numbers with extra "."

    All,
First, thanks in advance for any help. I have an issue in which all my Chapter and section numbers have an extra "." placed after the last number. Therefore instead of looking like this:
    1           Chapter Tiile
    1.1        Primary Heading
    1.2        Different Primary Heading
    1.2.1     Tertiary Heading
    it looks like this:
    1.           Chapter Tiile
    1.1.        Primary Heading
    1.2.        Different Primary Heading
    1.2.1.     Tertiary Heading
Does anyone know what is going on here?
    Best,
    Mark

    Hi everyone,
Actually, I just figured out what the issue was.  Essentially in the Bullets and Numbering options of the Paragraph Style we had entered the following in the 'Number' Field of the Number Style options:
    " ^1.^2.^t "
    rather than:
    " ^1.^2^t "
Once I got rid of the red dot shown in the first example, everything was fine. Thanks!

  • Question about section numbering in InDesign CS3

How do I use section numbering (1-1, 2-1, etc.) throughout a book document? I have a Current Page Number at bottom center of each Master page and want to include the Chapter Number and a hyphen before the Current Page Number. I want to start numbering over with each chapter. Also, I would like to find out how to use a running header of the Chapter name in the Master Pages. Thank you.

There is a distinction between chapter and section numbers. Also, Book can have a special meaning, so let's see if we can clear up some stuff here, first.
Is this a single document which you are dividing into logical chapters by uing sections in Pages panel Numbering and Section Options, or an InDesign Book, which is a collection of individual documents, each of which might be one of your chapters, and each of which might also contain multiple sections. An individual document can contain many sections, each of which may have a prefix and a section marker, both of which are accessible for use in numbering pages, but an individual document can have only one chapter number.

  • Chapter and subheading decimal numbering

I don’t know if its my terminology that’s letting me down but I’m having trouble finding out about how to do chapter and subheading numbers in my dissertation e.g:
    6. Chapter 6 of my dissertation
    6.1 Subheading 1
    6.2 Subheading 2
...and so forth. I can do it manually, but was wondering if Pages has the capability to do chapter and subheading numbers automatically, thus duplicate the numbering and chapters/subheadings in my TOC.
If it is possible, how do I perform this function and are there any special formatting things I have to do like section breaks?
I’m using Pages '05 and the default blank template, but I have had to modify all the paragraph styles to Gill Sans to comply with my university publishing regulations.

    Hello Will,
you can achieve this chapter numbering by using the list kind "Tiered Numbers".
Type a chapter title and show the text inspector and there the second tab "List". Choose in the section menu "Bullets & Numbering" the item "Tired Numbers" in the pop-up menu. Let the first item "1. 2. 3. 4." of the below appearing pop-up menu selected. Now adjust the options for "Number Indent" and "Text Indent" at the bottom of the inspector window if you want. You can adjust the space below the text etc. in the text inspector.
If you are ready with all adjustments and the font set to Gill Sans, show the styles drawer (menu: "View/Show Styles Drawer") and choose the menu item "Format/Create New Paragraph Style From Selection...". Give it an appropriate name and you are done. By the way, you can change any text attribute and paragraph/list option whenever you want by clicking on the red triangle (if you have changed something when the text cursor is shown in that paragrap this red shows you a change) in the styles drawer and choosing the item "Redefine Style From Selection". Now all paragraphs in your document with this style will be changed to the new attributes/options, but all emphesis words/chars will stay.
Now every time you need a new subheading level use the right pointing arrow button in the first section of the tab button "List" inside of the text inspector. If you need a superheading level, use the left pointing arrow button.
Be sure the option "Continue from previous" in the tab "List" of the text inspector is active and that you assigned the correct list style to the chapter/subheading text. The TOC has to be set to "Tiered Numbers", too.
It is a bit tricky, but for me it works fine.

  • Table and figure numbering in multi-chapter book

Using InDesign CC 2014 I am editing a book that consists of 23 chapters. Each chapters are added to the book separately. There are 5 levels of titles, level 1-4 is numbered (first level is the chapter title), the 5th is not.The numbering of the titles in chapters works very well, but I have problem with numbering of figures and tables.
The numbering of tables and figures should look like this: Table 1.1., 1.2., etc, Figure 1.1., 1.2., etc. The first number is always the chapter number, the second is the number of table/figure in order - within the chapter. I want the second number to re-start in each chapter. But if I select "continue from the previous number" (or something like this - I have Hungarian version, tried to translate to English), the numbering does not re-start with each new chapter, however gets the correct ^H number. If I select "start", all tables and figures will be ^H.1.
My question is: what should I do on one hand to be able to use (and sync) all formats (including tables' and figures' captions with numbers) in the whole book, in the same time making the figures' and tables' numbering having ^H followed by a number re-starts in each chapter? For this, the table and figure number should be which level on the list? What to do with "restart numbering at this level after" option?
I have searched the www from A to Z and back but could not find the answer. Please, help me! Oh, and please, write the how-to description step-by-step (maybe illustrated?), as I use Hungarian version, which makes applying the suggestions a bit difficult. Thank you, in advance, for your kind help!

Darn Framemaker and its use of phantom numbering placeholders.

  • "Speed bump" problem: when previewing on the iPad, the first page of each new chapter or section sticks and loads slowly.  How can I fix it?

I am building a book with text and photographs in iBooks Author, basing the design on my publisher's layout for the hard copy version.  Whenever I introduce a new section or chapter, I hit a "speed bump" when previewing on the iPad.  As you read, the first page of the new chapter or section is very hard to turn and sticks as it loads.  Within each section the pages flow very easily, but when you reach the next section you hit another speed bump. I have experimented with many possible solutions to no avail.  It does not seem to matter whether the new section has images or just text; the speed bump occurs regardless.

    Joel Pickford wrote:
However, I am finding that using fewer sections with more content in them minimizes the problem (i.e. fewer section-transions means fewer speed bumps).  This is contarary to the support page's suggestion of keeping chapters and sections smaller.  I am not having any problem within each section, even with lots of full page photos.
That recommendation was made, presumably, to reduce the length of the delay for each chapter. More content in the chapter means more delay when changing chapters. Of course, if you have lots of little chapters, the delay can still be annoying because, even if only four or five pages in a chapter, the delay is still noticable. Just pick something that works for your book and don't worry too much about the delay. Your readers will be familiar with it if they've seen more than one IBA book.
Will the choice of color space, s-rgb or Adobe rgb 1998, affect file size?
Should I try to compress them more- say, level 5 or level 4 in Save For Web?
Should I size the images for the iPad 2 instead of the iPad 3 retina display, since there are more 2s out there?
Which color space you use does not affect file size. Apple recommend to use sRGB, so I would stick with that. As to compression and sizing, only you can decide. Try and borrow an iPad 2 to make a judgement at what level of compression and resolution you think the images start too look bad. Your high-rez images for the new iPad will be down-sampled for display on the older models, which will introduce additional artifacts.
For my book, I simply used images at 1024 x 768 resolution. When viewed on a new iPad, they look just fine. The lower resolution is basically unnoticeable (at least for my purposes). You can view a sample of my book here: "Djembe Construction: A Comprehensive Guide". If you think the images there are good enough for your purposes, you could down-size your images to half their resolution, which will reduce file size about around a factor of three.

  • Absolute and Section Page Numbering (ID CS3)

I'm laying out a book (over 800 pages) that's split into sections. The client wants each section with its own set of page numbers as well as an absolute page number running throughout the whole thing. How do I do this without doing it manually? I've tried everything I can think of but I either end up replacing the section numbers or having two sets of section numbers on the page. Thanks for any help on the matter.

For the section numbering, use Auto Page Numbering, and apply sections accordingly. For the absolute numbering, create a master text frame that you could flow a list of numbers. For an easy way to create the list, see this thread:

  • Chapter/section numbering bug

In the Layout inspector under the Numbering tab, it gives you the option of continuing numbering the sections or starting over at a number you select. As it should be. Only problem is, it restarts the chapter numbers at 1, not the section numbers at 1. Clearly, this is a bug that needs to be fixed ASAP.

Found the solution, although it's still confusing. If you're on a chapter title page, then the instructions you give under Section Numbers under the Numbering tab apply to the chapters, not the sections. But if you're on a section title page, it applies to the sections. A bit of re-wording would make this much clearer because right now, it looks like a bug.
