Boot Camp and XP on 3rd Drive

I have a MAC PRO with 4- 300GB drives. Is it possible to use boot camp for windows XP on Drive 3? I have tried it once and when xp asks to shut down and restart it tries loading xp on the main drive (drive 1) where my OS system resides. AM I trying to do something that is not possible?

Hi and welcome to Discussions,
not impossible since I have my BootCamp Windows XP SP2 on my second HD (together with a 100GB OSX 'playground') ever since BootCamp was Beta.
Never had any problems with it.

  • Boot Camp / XP made my hard drive disappear

Running on a 20" Intel iMac w/ 10.4.6 and the latest updates. Also installed the latest firmware upgrade prior to this exercise.
Ran Boot Camp and created the Mac Driver CD and a 10G partition.
Then, booted from my XP disk and when it took me to the 'choose partition' screen, there was only one drive listed, as C:, of 130G. Shouldn't this have been the 10G partition? And shouldn't the OS X partition have shown up as it does in the documentation for Boot Camp? BTW, my drive is the 250G and had about 155G remaining before I started.
When I saw that, I dared not select and format, so I quit the XP installation.
Now, it only wants to boot into XP. Holding the Option key upon bootup only displays one disk to choose from, Windows. And of course, there's no XP for it to boot into, so it's just a flashing cursor on a black screen.
When I use the OS X Install Disk's Disk Utility, it does not even see my original OS X HD. All that shows up is the Maxtor drive with no installed disk information at all (no sub-drive or partitions under Maxtor).
Selecting Startup Drive doesn't do it either since my HD does not show up - only the CD drive and the Network choices.
And even if I wanted to reinstall OS X, I can't because there's no Destination drive to choose from in the installer!!!
How do I remove XP from the boot partition (is there even a boot partition on these things)? I'm sure the data on the disk was not deleted as I never let the XP installer actually do anything to the existing drives and Boot Camp is not supposed to actually delete any data.
Needless to say, any help would be appreciated.
20" iMac (Intel Core Duo)   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Its funny....I got my new INTEL IMAC set it up with all my old IMACs information 3 hours or so of work (Itunes...Iphoto)
and in 12 minutes....it had no bootable harddrive...and no volume information for disk utility to work with.
I saw your post...and that partition size (130 GB) was exactly the same as mine (I had created a 60gig windows Partition).
Did you ever figure out what happened.....I had not backed anything up....because I had never had this issue with a piece of Apple Software Before...and since I did not even hit F3 to create the windows partition...I thought I would be safe.
So it must have been the original Partition change in Boot Camp that destroyed OS X?
I bought Parallels product in the meantime...but it does not have very good graphics support, and it looks like it will not run certain CDROM games...due to copy protection (Keeps looking for the CDROM that is already in the drive).
So...I am going to backup everything to an external drive and see what happens.....again

  • Problems with Boot Camp and Drive Partition

First of all, let me preface this by saying I have in the past successfully partitioned my drive and installed Windows, but it was a while back and I can remember it was frustrating, but I don't remember the exact details. Also, I apologize for the rambling nature of this problem, but I'm trying to give as much relevant information as possible and walk through the steps I took to get where I am now.
Feel free to skip ahead to the end, the main problem seems to be I tried to create a 300 GB partition, but it didn't take or something. Now my storage is reflecting I've lost 300 GB, but it won't recognize the existence of the new partition.
Let me just walk through what I did. I deleted my previous partition because I was having some difficulties with a few programs and the partition ended up being too small and I wanted to make a bigger one anyway. I only use it for gaming and didn't care about any of the saved games so I just deleted the partition and figured I'd start over from scratch.
Before I begin, some technical details about the computer I'm working with. I don't know how much of this is necessary, but here it is:
    It's a 27-inch late 2012 iMac with a 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7 processor with 24GB RAM running OSX 10.9.4
The storage space is a little more difficult as that is part of the problem I'm running into, which I'll get to in a minute.
Anyway, I have a Windows 7 Professional install DVD and a burned CD called Boot Camp, which I think is the drivers from last time I installed Windows (a year and half ago?), but since I needed Superdrive for the install DVD I just used an XHD I had to put the drivers on (like I said, I don't remember how I did it last time). I go through Boot Camp and look at how much space I have and how big I want to make my partition.
Side note: Last time I made my partition, I'm fairly certain I set it to 200 GB, but the partition size actually came out to something like 112 GB or something significantly less. I didn't know what happened, but figured it would still be enough space and it had been such a hassle I didn't bother doing it again.
Supposedly I have a 1 TB HD, and I can't remember exactly what it said when I partitioned the drive this time, but it definitely said I was using less than half of my capacity and I had plenty of room, so I opted to go for a 301 GB partition (the slider wouldn't let me do exactly 300) which still left me with around 300 GB of space left over on my Mac partition I want to say. I went ahead with it and it started partitioning the drive with the blue line moving very slowly and after an hour or so it was like 80% across but no longer making progress. I looked online and people said that shouldn't happen. I cancelled the partition and the Disk Utility showed the partition, but said it was unmounted or something.
I restarted my computer thinking maybe I'd try and see what would happen if I tried to boot it up as if I had Windows installed. I also at that moment remembered that I'd had a similar problem last time because I had my XHD plugged into my USB port so I unplugged that and held down OPT. It then showed me my Mac HD drive and a CD icon that said Windows, so I clicked on that figuring maybe I could install it after all.
It led me through a Install manager and it got to the point where it asked what drive/partition do you want to install Windows in, I recognized the screen and remembered I was supposed to choose a certain one, but couldn't remember which one and none of the sizes seemed to match the storage I had allocated to the partition. One was about 200 GB and since the last time I did it my partition came out 100 GB smaller than I had set it for I thought maybe that was it.
However, it said I couldn't install on that drive for some reason (I can't remember exactly what it said). So I restarted again and figured I'd go back and see what I did wrong and start over. When I check Disk Utility it no longer sees any partition (mounted or unmounted or anything) and that the entirety of my HD is dedicated to Mac HD.
The problem is, now I'm getting weird reports about the size of my drive, the amount used, and the space available. Disk Utility tells me I have 1.12 TB capacity, 301 GB available, and 819 GB used. That doesn't even add up. Furthermore, when I click get info on Macintosh HD, it tells me I have 810 GB capacity, 364 GB available, and 446 GB used. When I click on About this Mac and go to System Report and storage I get this:
    Macintosh HD
    Available: 364 GB
    Capacity: 810 GB
    Logical Volume Group:
         Name: Macintosh HD
         Size: 1.12 TB
         Freespace: 301 GB
    Physical Volumes:
         disk0s2:
         size: 121 GB
         disk1s2:
         size: 999 GB
Now I really don't know what to make of it. That 301 GB free space makes sense as the partition I tried to create and if I add that to the 446 GB used on my Mac partition, plus the 364 GB available, that adds up to 1.12 TB (roughly, I've rounded off these numbers).
But how come Disk Utility doesn't recognize the partition then? What should I do from here?
I couldn't find anyone asking this exact type of question or running into this same problem before, so I hope I'm not asking about something that's already been answered. If that's the case, if you could direct me to where I can find the answer I'd be appreciative.
Otherwise, any help or light that can be shed would be most appreciated.
    Thanks!

The problem seems to have gone away. I did click on repair disk in Disk Utility, I'm not sure if that did anything, but now when I run Boot Camp Assistant it is showing me the correct free space, so I don't know what happened. Oh well.
Still having trouble getting the **** thing to partition, but that topic is covered extensively elsewhere.

  • Understanding boot camp and formatting backup drive for it

somehow i never got to fully understand how boot camp works in relation to OS X and i am wondering if someone can help me out here.
    1. can i install boot camp on a mac pro and have NO mac OS on the computer at all? i have an old install here on a drive that i am not using and my recollection is that this is what i was doing.
    2. if this is the case do i simply BACKUP this Boot Camp OS to an external drive that is formatted for windows?
    3. if i have another newer mac pro (as I do) - and i am running yosemite on it - can i just run an partition on this drive and install my Boot Camp install (or maybe i run the boot camp installer and it creates a partition for itself)?
    4. in the PAST i used WinClone to create a BACKUP of the Boot Camp installation and simply dropped this backup on my OS X desktop which was backed up. is there any good reason for me to PARTITION the backup drive with a part of it being /partitioned/ as windows drive so that the Boot Camp Partition was backed up to this windows partition? the lacie external drive install app seems to ask if i want to do this and i got to thinking there may be a more direct way to backup BOOT CAMP than running the WinClone backup manually once in awhile and having this image backed up with the rest of the OS X partition.
    thanks for any help.

thanks Csound. this is a tad confusing for me.
i guess hatter is saying he would like to see the Windows 7 boot camp on its own drive. and right now i am basically planning on /restoring/ the WINCLONE image backup from my 2006 MP to either this separate drive in bay 4 in the 2012 MP or a partition on the OS X drive in bay 1 (if i can "cleanse" it of all the stuff it had when it was on my older 2006).
i guess i do this /through/ the WINCLONE user interface but is it going to somehow drop this boot camp partition on a separate drive that somehow has its /own/ mac OS install on it? you know what i mean? i mean - say i want to put this boot camp install on an empty drive in bay 4, so i format it with extended journaled and then go into winclone and start some kind of restore procedure of my backup to that drive? i guess i am confused big time about this.
also, just so i am clear. is that 2 partitions per mac pro or per disk? i mean, i do have an OS X yosemite on my drive and i am planning on installing windows 7 by restoring from WinClone image

  • Can OS X drives be protected from boot camp, and how to backup?

    1. If I create a boot camp partition on my main drive, can I somehow protect my other drives and OS X partitions (and main drive OS X partition) from any possible tampering from a Win7 boot where I'm running software that could be infected or problematic?
    2. How will I back up (and restore)? I've been using Carbon Copy to clone my drives, but unsure if that will also clone a Boot Camp partition?

  • Boot Camp and External DRives

Can the partition needed for Boot Camp be an external hard drive on a Firewire connection?

    Hi,
since Windows (either XP or Vista) can not boot up themselves from external HDs, BootCamp does not support external HDs for partitioning.
    Only internal HDs are supported.
You can however try this procedure for getting Windows on an external HD: http://tubeshards.wordpress.com/2006/12/05/install-windows-to-a-macintosh-usb-dr ive/

  • Lion, Boot Camp and Windows 7 Issues

Couple of questions regarding Lion, Boot Camp and Windows 7... I never had issues with Snow Leopard and setting up Windows 7 on my iMac (expcept the dreaded black screen after restart, bu got that fixed)
Let me start off with my specs and then I will ask my questions:
    iMac 27"
    i7 Quad Core (1st gen)
    16GB Ram
    1TB HDD
OS X Lion (Fresh Install - Not Upgrade)
All updates for OS and iLife and other installed software:
    Adobe Creative Suite CS5
    MS Office 2011
    Boot Camp 4.0
    Window 7 Ultimate
    Ok... here are my questions.
When I fixed my black screen issues after installing a fresh copy of Windows 7 - I had to install MacFUSE and Tuxera NTFS in order to delete the the stock ATI driver so the second rebot on the install of windows 7 would work and boot correctly. After rebotting into my mac side I now always get this message from Tuxera.
What does this mean? Now in the finder when looking at the computer drives.. It does not show the BOOTCAMP partition...
However, when I resart i can hold down the ALT key and get this menu:
I know this might seem strange to ask, but why are the Macintosh HD and the Recovery HD text smoothed and the Windows text not? Being a design I see the difference and it makes me wonder why this is. (It is almost like the BSOD icon apple used forwhen connecting with shared PCs)... Anyways, I can boot into windows when clicking this drive.
After getting to windows 7 it will not let me run updated. The OS is activated and I have even installed SP1 manually, but it always tells me that the Update service is not running. When in fact it is. I have checked it and it is set to start automatically. I have reset and shutdown my computer more than 10 times... I can't figure out what the issues are.
    Overview:
Why do I get the Tuxera NTFS error?
Why can I see the boot camp partion when manually selecting it form startup, but it does not show in OS X
I can't get Windows to update? Any ideas?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

These various utilities like Tuxera are incompatible with Lion. Partly because MacFuse is incompatible. You need to remove them completely.
As for the Windows partition you might consider using Boot Camp Assistant to remove it. Then make a new partition and install Windows. Remember to use the Windows formatter to format the Windows partition NTFS.

  • Boot Camp and Windows 7 Problems

I have found a reproducible bug with Boot Camp and WIndows 7.
Clean install of OS X 10.6.2, Boot Camp Asst. Partition on my Mac Pro boot drive, clean install Win 7.
Problem: while in OS X, Disk Util Repair Permissions takes forever, churning away at the hard drive. Also, intermittent Spotlight hangs, and weird Dropbox behavior where it churns the disk like crazy again.
I have Paragon NTFS for Mac v 7.03 and perhaps this has something to do with it.
After retuning to a single partition using Boot Camp Asst. (deleting the Win 7 partition), all is back to normal - Repair Permissions takes about 60 seconds, no Spotlight or Dropbox issues whatsoever.
Using Fusion for Win 7 for now. Awaiting official Apple support of Win 7 in Boot Camp.
Wondering if anyone else can confirm this behavior where you have a partitioned boot drive with 10.6.2 and Win 7, with or without NTFS for Mac 7.03.

Addendum: on reboot/option key boot screen, it showed OS X volume, Win 7 Volume, and EFI Boot Volume - the latter had never been there before with Vista.

  • Unable to install Boot Camp and Windows 8.1 on Mac Mini

    Hello,
My computer is a late 2012 mac mini with fusion drive. OS is OSX 10.9.1. Also an apple external optical drive and a Windows 8.1 full install DVD. I attempted to install Boot Camp and Windows 8.1 and failed.
I ran Boot Camp Assistant and first problem was when it rebooted the computer - I got a text message that said the OS was missing. After a while I tried holding down the Option key while rebooting, then I got several choices to boot from - I chose the windows disk, and windows installation started.
I was eventually given a list of 6 or 7 partitions to chose from, to install windows into. I  settled on the one marked BOOTCAMP. It seemed the best guess. But the installer said that it could not install on this partition. Something about the wrong format or EFI or boot partition(s)?? In fact, the installer would not let me install into any of the listed partitions.
I restarted Boot Camp and it allowed me to remove the boot camp partition and revert to OSX only. Thanks for that!
My questions: is Windows 8.1 supported with my configuration? I know the FAQ says it is not. If in fact it is, did I do something wrong?
    Thanks,
    Doug

Poking around, I found an installation manual which was downloaded to my USB drive with the boot camp windows drivers. It says that when I reached the point in the windows installer where I'm given a choice of partitions, I should choose the one marked BOOTCAMP, and format it. Which I didn't think to try before. So I tried again, using Boot Camp Assistant from the top.
Failure again. This time, when the computer rebooted, I selected the Windows icon as before, but I got a text message saying that the boot manager couldn't be found, and a dead stop.
I also found that on the option-key reboot disk selection screen, I could eject the windows install disk and reinsert it. When I did that, I got the Windows boot icon and another icon labeled EFI boot. So I also tried that icon, with the same result.
So, I'm doing exactly what I did before (I think), but now the windows installer won't start.

  • Installing Windows 7 RC1 with Boot Camp AND Parallels?

I have a 24" iMac (2009 model) and have successfully installing Windows 7 RC1 using Boot Camp. No problems at all and everything is working fine. But now I'm contemplating purchasing Parallels and using Windows 7 in a window.
I just need to know the steps involved and how this works. First I purchase and install Parallels. Then I run it and somehow tell it to use my Boot Camp partition for the VM, right? In this way, I'm assuming I don't actually have to install Windows 7 again or make another partition, right? Once I get the VM installed, then I can either boot to Windows 7 from startup OR boot from within Mac OS using Parallels and it would be the same?
If I can do it this way, can anyone point me to step-by-step instructions on how to choose the right settings in Parallels? I have found instructions for installing Windows 7 using Boot Camp and Parallels separately, but not how to use the Boot Camp install for the VM in Parallels.

Wow, it was much easier than I thought it would be! Downloaded the trial of Parallels. Installed it and pointed it to my Boot Camp partition with Windows 7 installed on it. And minutes later, I'm up and running with Windows 7 in Parallels. Sound didn't work at first, but after I did a Windows Update, it installed the correct driver and now everything is working great. I can't believe how smooth this thing runs within Leopard. I allocated 1GB of RAM for WIndows 7 and it's seems fine so far, but I really haven't run any resource-intensive apps yet.

  • Help Put An End to Windows Activation Issue in Boot Camp and Fusion

Several people have indicated you should set it up Fusion first before you activate Windows. Does that mean you activate in Fusion before Boot Camp? What is also not clear is the reason for this and whether this bypasses the issue of having to activate Windows twice - once in native mode (Boot Camp) and once in VM (Fusion), if you intend on using Windows in both Boot Camp and Fusion.
I'm hoping to finally put an end to this ongoing question and issue since I've yet to find a definitive answer on several boards. The only answer I was able to find was that you have to activate Windows in both native and VM but this obviously conflicts with what a few people have posted, unless of course I have misinterpreted what they've stated.

Thnx. My MBP has a built-in optical drive, so that explains the first screen without the option to create the installation disk.
So the problem remains to get Boot Camp recognize the installation disk. I tried to create an 8 GB (and after that even a 16 GB) installation disk on a USB stick and add the Boot Camp files to this stick. Next screen, Boot Camp still asks to insert the Windows Installation Disk. After that I burned the iso on a new DVD to be able to insert an original disk in the optical drive, but even this did not work out.
Today I called Microsoft to tell me whether I was taking the right steps, but this guy couldn't help me either. "I should not install windows in a partition, but I should use parallels to install it under iOS..." ?
The iso I have is an original disk image of Windows 8.1 Pro NL, meant to make a clean install. So what am I doing wrong?

  • Boot camp and partitions

    Hello all,
I am a bit new with boot camp and I am not sure about the size of patition.
What do you suggest me for OS X and Windows partition size?
    Thank for advices

    ok, thanks for your advice.
I would like to ask you something else. I just inmstall my first boot camp with Windiws 7 and it works fine. I also install boot cam driver, and all seams to be fine.
I also discover that when I reboot from Seven, it start Seven. And when form Windows Seven I got to Control Panel -> Boot camp and I restart on OS X.
And from OS X I restart my laptop, it starts OS X.
So If I retart my system, it will restat to the OS it has been restart from.
My question, when I Start my workstation, how can I do that from one piont it let me choose to which OS I want to start. (Excepted from olding the "option bottom"?

  • Mac mini expansion Qs (Boot camp and Firewire target disc)

Hi folks, I'm getting a new Mac mini, mainly because I need more RAM for music projects.
I am planning to use my existing Mac Mini as a firewire target disc. This old mini was a partition (about 10GB) that runs Windoze.
Now, when I hook the new Mini to the old one for the program that copies over all programs, files, etc. will it also automatically copy the Windoze partition?
Alternattely, if I am using the old Mini as a firewire target disc, is there any way to boot up Windows from it, that is temporarily designate it as the startup disk?
Any thoughts or suggestions deeply appreciated.

Boot Camp only supports internal disk drives (for booting).
It is possible to copy the Windows files across. The method to use depends on whether you are using FAT32 or NTFS.
For FAT32, these are the steps I used.
    1. Start new Mac in FireWire Target Disk Mode
    2. Clone the Mac OS X partition from the old Mac to the new Macs hard disk (I used Drive Genie on this occasion but Carbon Copy Cloner would be equally suitable)
    3. Disconnect new Mac and boot from it.
    4. Run Boot Camp assistant and create a new partition for Windows
    5. I then rebooted using the Windows Installer CD and choosing FAT32 format, I then let it do the first part of the install (copying files from the CD) as this also 'blesses' the new partition to make it bootable. It might not be necessary to let it install files, but it is necessary to format the partition this way.
    6. I then rebooted back in to Mac OS X on the new Mac
    7. I booted the old Mac in FireWire Target Disk Mode and connected it to the new Mac
    8. I then used Disk Utility to 'restore' from the old Windows partition on the old Mac to the new Windows partition on the new Mac. Basically this copies all the files across.
    9. I then disconnected the old Mac, rebooted from the new Windows partition and as expected had to redo product activation.
For NTFS, much of the above will still be necessary but look at using a utility called WinClone instead of the Apple Disk Utility (which does not support NTFS).
I moved from an 80GB Core Duo Mac mini to a 120GB Core 2 Duo Mac mini.

  • How can I get my Boot Camp partition off my old drive?

I swapped out the stock 160gb drive that came in my MacBook Pro since it was acting up. I installed a new drive and restored it with Time Machine, but now my Boot Camp partition is still on my old drive. I slipped my old drive into a usb sata enclosure and tried booting from it in hope I could back it up with Winclone. When I went into the startup disk selector the drive would not show up (but it sounded like it was trying to spin up). Earlier when I pulled the drive out of my MacBook Pro it was still functioning fine, so I do not think the drive has failed.
Any ideas on how I can get the Boot Camp partition off the old drive? Thanks for your help.
    -Ryan

Some drives require more current to spin-up from a "cold start" than most USB ports put out, even if the port supplies. Additionally, if the drive is failing, it may require even more power for the startup.
I have a couple USB enclosures with external AC power that I keep around in case I run into drives like this. Failing that, I also have a couple of USB cables which use 2 ports to provide additional current. Also the cable length, and gauge makes a difference.

  • Screen freezing, leopard won't load, boot-camp and parallels,

This problem started a while ago, around the time that I installed boot camp so I think it may be related. Sometimes when I am playing a DVD or a game or using something I've downloaded my macbook will freeze or automatically restart. It happened once a week or so and afterwards it wouldn't load, it would sometimes gets as far as the gray screen and the loading symbol and the freeze and restart and this would happen over and over again and would happen on the windows and mac partitions of boot-camp. I got a bit sick of it so uninstalled boot-camp and decided to try parallels instead, the problem is even worse now and the screen will freeze but will restart up to leopard fine but a while later it will freeze again or sometimes it will do as soon as the logins screen appears. What could be wrong and could it be related to having windows on my computer as it seems to happen quicker when I am on windows. Any help appreciated.

+*I'm trying to install Snow Leopard from an external harddrive*+
Is there a reason that you are trying this method as opposed to using your DVD?
Do you have a working installation of Snow Leopard on the external drive or have you tried to create a bootable image of the install media on the external drive?
