Boot Camp & External HardDrive

Is it possible to use Boot Camp to create a Windows partition on an external hard drive that is formated for Mac so the same drive can be used to back up both the Mac partition and the Windows partition? Would do this using the backup feature in Lion and a backup software program under Win7 Pro.
iMac 27" Intel i5 2.7GHz Late Model

The internal HDD has been partitioned using Boot Camp and am currently using both Win7 Pro and Lion on the same machine.

OK. Gotcha.
The easy solution is to partition the drive using GUID and formatting using exFAT on the Windows/Mac partition and formatting for OS X on the Mac-only partition. Do this using Disk Utility.
Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to two. Size each to your preference. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the partition you will use on both Windows and Mac, click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the Format type to exFAT, then click on the Erase button.

Boot Camp - External DVD Reader (Mac Compatible)

To all,
I am not able to get Boot Camp to load vista from the external CD-ROM since the internal one is totaly disconnected. It does nothing. It spins the CD when it restarts then continues on to loading the login screen.
Bare with me - this is the fun part -
I got a 24" white iMac. CD-ROM was stuck and refused to take in new CD's. Took it to Apple, they replaced it. I bring it back home 2 days later and the screen is dented. They fix that in 4 days. Now I am finally able to start installing Vista.
Put the CD in - nothing happens - it kicks it out!!!! Well - its brand new - its even a different brand than what was in there before.
I take it back to apple, i give the lady all the **** in the world because this is not supposed to happen, etc.
They decide to give me a new iMac. While I am waiting, the manager approaches me and give me the 13 cents which were found in the cd-rom drive (thanks to my kids)
So I appologize - totaly ignored her wanting $450 to replace it, so I went and bought a Sony external DVD reader, burner.
-- Problem --
Boot Camp, Front Row + the DVD player software won't work off the external drive.
I took the mac appart - disconnected the dvd-drive from the motherboard thinking that if its not there, then boot camp will attempt to run off the external drive.
Put it back together - and rebooted - everything came up fine until using front row or the dvd player.
Boot Camp still won't read the external drive - no errors nothing - it attempts then quits and moves to the login screen.
Guys - I need help - i make my living off Windows so not having access to it - its killing me.
Please do not recommend parallels or anything else like it.
I am willing to try anything at this point. Before I go and spend $450 i will rather buy a new machine.

I doubt there is any way to get the external to work with the Windows install. It's magic that the internal works! However, since you are not afraid to rip the iMac apart, a Google of 'imac internal dvd drive' shows that you can get a replacement for well under $450.

Satelite a215-s7437 only boot with external harddrive usb atached

My laptop a215-s7437 boot but after the logo i have a black screen no mouse or anything, but If I connetc my external harddrive conected with usb It will boot and works find

Wow, that seems very odd to me!
Have you tried resetting the BIOS to defaults? See if that works.
If not, try updating the BIOS.

Can't get ibook to boot from external harddrive when hitting option key

Hello,
After owning a Pismo Powerbook that had it's hardrive replaced --twice--, i'm all about backing my shtuff up for my ibook.
I picked up a Lacie d2 external harddrive today, and used Disk Utility's Restore function to copy everything from the ibook to the drive. I can boot off the Lacie without a problem when I select it as the startup disk from sys preferences.
But I can't get it to boot from the Lacie when I depress the Option key while rebooting or starting.
any suggestions?

Let's be sure you are doing it correctly:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the desired boot drive (you will have to wait about 20 seconds before you can make the selection) then click on the large right arrow button. If this is what you are doing and it does not work, then you may need to re-prep the external drive and re-clone.
1. Boot from your Tiger DVD. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button, then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
After the above re-clone as follows:
1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
2. Select the startup volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4. Drag the startup volume to the Source entry field.
5. Select the backup volume from the leftside list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
6. Check the box to Erase Destination. Skip this step if you've already formatted the drive.
7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.

How to access local files of crashed macbook pro booted thru external harddrive

I am not able to see my macbook pro local data while booting it thru external harddrive (OS X marvericks)
Note- my maching is crashed,every time I starts up my machine it starts with OS X utility window.
Alos tried disk utility bt says back up as many as files as possble and reinstall OS.

while booting from your external disk, open Finder’s Preferences, select its Sidebar tab, ensure that all of its “DEVICES” checkboxes have been checked, and close the Preferences window. If your internal drive doesn’t appear among the devices shown in the Finder sidebar, then you’ll need to hire a data recovery firm to recover the data on your internal disk — note that their services tend to be expensive. Purchasing an external disk to use as a regular backup destination is much less expensive than hiring a data recovery firm.

Boot Camp and Windows XP on a External Harddrive

Hi, I was wondering if it is possible to store Windows XP on a harddrive and run it with boot camp only when it is plugged in. The only reason I want to do this is because I am lacking Harddrive space for my mac and I also do not want to reduce my speed in anyway. Thanks

Boot Camp partition moved to external:"No bootable device found"

I have just installed a new SSD, moved my old OSX partition to the new drive and am currently using the old hdd in an enclosure as an external hard drive.
I can access all my files on my old OSX partition and my bootcamp partition when connected to my laptop. However, when i try to boot from my old bootcamp partition i get the "No bootable device found -- insert boot disk and press any key" message. That is when i boot from Startup Disk and target the bootcamp partion.
When restarting my computer with the external harddrive connected and pressing the option key i only get "SSD" and "Recovery" as options, it does not recognize the external harddrive as a startup option at all.
Is there anything i can do to use my old boot camp partition again? It worked perfectly fine before being external to the computer.
My computer is a 2011 mbp with Mavericks, my boot camp patition is installed with windows 7.

Microsoft requires that the partition for Windows be on an internal disk. It will not see an external drive as bootable.

External USB drive not recognized in OS X after rebooting from Boot Camp

Thanks in advance for any help. Here's the situation:
Everything works fine in OS X (10.5.2). In particular I have an external USB harddrive that I keep my iTunes songs on.
Then I boot via Boot Camp into Windows XP and play a few games. Then I reboot out of XP and back into OS X. At that point the external USB harddrive does not show up on the desktop. If I turn off the harddrive and turn it back on again, it shows up and is usable. I can continue to do that, but I would appreciate any advice on how to get the harddrive to show up when rebooting from XP (without requiring it to be turned off and on).

LexSchellings: I did run "verify disk" and "repair disk" -> but no luck… My hard drive isn't mounted to Lion as shown in status. Is it something to do with NTFS format? I came across some forum and read that Lion is design to natively support NTFS..
Are there any ways around???

Unable to boot Windows 7 Premium from an external harddrive

I recently gained an interest in playing microsoft based games, and just recently got my late 2013 macbook pro retina 15". I have been trying for several hours for the last two days to get bootcamp to boot Windows 7 Premium from a 500GB external harddrive without re-partiitioning my internal harddrive. I can get to the first screen of the Windows 7 Install asking about language, but neither my keyboard or mousepad respond with the windows installer. I assume this is because Windows 7 premium does not have USB 3.0 capability. Is there a workaround for this that doesn't involve partitioning my internal drive?

That's all fine and good, but I would strongly prefer not to have to use internal drive space for Windows. Even If I were to use the internal drive to install it, I would still run into the same problems of not having a keyboard or trackpad as I've seen other users having issues with. It stands to reason that if I had a working keyboard and mouse that I would be able to install it to an external hard drive, using a workaround method found here:

Fat32 External Hard Drive does NOT mount on Windows XP Pro under boot camp

I have a gateway 160gb portable external HDD. When it came pre-formatted in NTFS. It mounted on Windows XP under boot camp or Vmware Virtual machine very well.
I then formatted it under HFS+ to use it with superduper.
Now that I want to convert it back to NTFS. I formatted it under Fat32 so that windows can recognize it and I can format it again under NTFS.
The drive mounts fine on Mac OSX leopard but not on Windows XP (bootcamp or Vmware VM). Could someone help? I need this drive to be under NTFS so that I can store work related files which can only be run on Windows and some of the files are larger than 4gb.

Under Disk Utility>Partition select anything other than 'Current' under 'Volume Scheme', then the format field will light. However, you should have been able to format under Windows Disk Management once it was online. See:

I have a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 1TB USB 3.0 external hard drive that I currently use just for Time Machine backups. You must install Boot Camp in your internal drive because Windows can't be installed in an external disk and Boot Camp can't do that

How do I write to my boot camp partition with Paragon NTFS that comes with Mountain Lion? Or how do I get my boot camp partition to show up in Paragon's "Available NTFS partitions:" panel like my external hard drive does?

I've just set up boot camp on my MacBookPro with a freshly installed Mountain Lion and Windows 7.
I would like to read and write in both directions from drive to drive if possible. I've hunted around quite a bit to try and work this out, and so far I understand that one can write to or transfer files from one drive to the other with Paragon NTFS among other softwares.
I noticed when I looked in my system preferences the utility "Paragon NTFS for Mac OS X" came with Mountain Lion and it will recognize an external hard drive when I have one plugged in under "Available NTFS partitions:". However, it does not automatically recognize my NTFS boot camp partition nor does it automatically give me write access.
Is the Paragon NTFS that comes with Mountain Lion limited in some way?
Do I still need to purchase and download the software of the same name from Paragon to get the full write privilidges I want or is there something I can do to get the version of Paragon on my MAC to recognize and give me write priviledges to my boot camp partition?
I'm open to all suggestions to get the read / write access between partitions in my boot camped drive.
MacFUSE is also listed in the System Preferences of my machine (it also came with Mountain Lion), if that helps. I'm still working out exactly what each of these is supposed to do and how I can use it to accomplish the task at hand.
My boot camp drive does appear normally in other contexts and in disk utility it indicates that the drive is mounted.

Interesting. Comes with? you didn't have either before? Paragon is commercial and is now v. 10.0, they were the only one keeping updated and was supporting 10.7.4. I would not enable more than one.
For writing to HFS Paragon has theirs but probably give the nod to MacDrive there.
I never do an upgrade to a new OS over the old system, I backup (clone) and format the drive with the new OS and do the install so whatever is there I know is clean and also to keep from carrying around leftovers from years and systems past.
I would assme Paragon is limited. Try their site and knowledge base?

Can I use my old Macbook Pro as an external disc drive while installing Windows 7 through boot camp?

I want to install the Windows 7 CD on the newest version of the 2013 Macbook pro 10.9.2 running OSX Mavericks, through Boot Camp. It does not have a disc port, nor do I have an external disc drive....but I do have an older macbook that does have a disc drive and I know you can supplement it for an external disc drive.
My question is can I use my old Macbook pro's as an external disc drive for the installation of Windows 7 in Boot camp? Will this be a problem? Or do I have to buy an external disc drive separately.

Boot Camp: Seagate External Drive not Recognized in Windows Explorer -- PLEASE HELP!

I'm running in Boot Camp and using a Seagate Free Agent GoFlex external drive as both a Time Machine backup on the Mac OS, as well as a storage unit to exchange files. However, whenever I plug my external drive into my computer while running Windows, it does not show up in the Computer tab under "Devices With Removable Storage", like it should. It does show up on the "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" button in the bottom right hand corner, and it appears as a "Startup Disk" in the Boot Camp Control Panel, so I know that it isn't a cable or USB input issue. Please help me get it to appear as a Device in the Windows Explorer. I need to exchange files from my Mac OS to my Windows OS. Thank you in advance for the help.

I did it but i could not install tool from the dvd. As i said, i can still boot up windows xp i just needs to re-install the service tool.
The drivers are working properly.
