Boot Error with grub installed...no debug instructions

* Quick Intro / About *
Hello everybody... im new to linux in general and arch caught my eye since i have an interest in learning programming... i figured arch's documentation was better than that supplied for ubuntu since it's more in depth and has the core utilities needed to get a base system running with in-depth explanations (which i like). trust me when i say, i have read almost all of the arch documentation more than
a few dozen times and have completed this successfully before...
* My Problem *
I installed my copy of Arch with the Core Utilities package and followed the wiki guides to the tee. i've done several test installations with VMware and Virtualbox OSE and decided to do it for real on my Toshiba Laptop Satellite l305d-s5895... all my hardware is currently supported by the majority of the Linux Distro's (i did my homework). I am attempting to do a dual boot with Arch and Windows

At boot and during reboot, unless i have a boot medium, this is what i am prompted with...
Intel UNDI, PXE-2.1 (build 082)

PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM.
No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key
any help would be amazing! i have no idea why at boot the computer searches for a network connection
instead of the GRUB! >.<
i am able to boot however with the Arch Live Disc and access my filesystem for both Arch and Windows 7
and resume normal use!

well, just as an update... i believe it is a software issue... i wiped my whole HDD with gparted and set the partitions with Arch Live Core Install medium and GRUB worked perfectly... i created an NTFS partition as well for Win 7... hopefully the Win Installer wont overwrite GRUB and use its own bootloader. i was re-reading an area of the wiki and found...
- GRUB must be installed on the MBR (first sector of the hard disk), or the first partition of the first storage device to be recognized by most BIOS's.
source: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Gr … stallation
hopefully i can just reinstall GRUB if needed with the Live Disc and i can boot win7 and arch like that...
if an suggestions, or comments, please...would be nice.

  • Booting up with the Install CD without a wired keyb

    Folks
I am having major issues here and need to run a hw test and then perhaps archive and install. But I only have a wireless keyboard.
Surely...surely...surely with all Apple's attention to detail there is a way to boot up into your install CD without a wired keyb? My mac is stuck at the grey screen with the rotating gear...

Just curious about something. When you get an iMac and chose wireless keyboard option does Apple include the wired keyboard in the box also? If so what happened to the wired keyboard?

  • Validation Errors with new Install of W7 x64 Ent Debug Checker On New Equipment

I am receiving multiple Errors. I am trying to use the Windows 7 x64 Enterprise which happens to be the Debug Checker version OS as the host machine.  I have only built the machine, and tried to load the Drivers.
I say this due to the starting issue that upon the loading of the entire driver set, (for the MB, Seagate Harddrive, and Vid Card), I would get the BSOD.  I identified that the Bluetooth driver was the issue.  I then did not load the Bluetooth
drivers for the MB on the 5th or so install of the 7 Ent os.  (Tried Server 2k8 r2. Which is not compatible with the MB Drivers.)
I have not received a single Update either.  The Auto update feature claims that I am up to date.  I do not believe this due to the fact that any fresh Install of any OS has about several decades of updates and reboots to go through.
Upon trying the suggestions on the forum about turning off the IE Addons, the errors remain.  Also the results of the sfc /scannow are copied below.
    My Questions
I am seeking assistance on solving the Errors that have refused to leave me alone , to put it humorously and am asking for your insight and wisdom.  Will you take a look??
Do I need to go to Win 7 Ent or Ult x64 that is not a Debug Checker version.
Are there other Microsoft download Registery file checkers besides the MGA Diag tool that are freeware that I can use to check, for corrupted registry files.
Or do I just need to take it to the stores (Fry’s and Microcenter) that recommended the equipment and have them just reload the software and allow them the headache of solving the error issue, by paying them to install the drivers and have ALL of the
drivers work. (including the blue tooth)
The Goal is to turn it into a Active Directory Server using Virtual Box with Server 2k8 R2 running in the virtual box environment.
    Errors and Results.
There are also a number of logs that show various Crit, Error, and Warning logs.  I will include those if need be.
This is the majority of the error messages, and I have missed the opportunity to capture others.

  • Booting error after post-install update [Solved]

    hi
Been using Linux for a while, but wanting to learn rather than just use, so decided to give Arch a go, after the review in LinuxMagazine.
Managed to install and boot into it after a few trial and error.
    Ran "pacman -Syu"
pacman updated itself, then ran into the hotplug conflict. I took it from This thread that it was safe to accept to remove hotplug.
    Ran "pacman -Syu" again
I then ran into the the error:
error: the following file conflicts were found
    grub: /usr/share/grub: exists in filesystem.
    Followed This thread and did
    phrakture wrote:'mv' /usr/share/grub to something like /usr/share/grub-backup
Ran pacman -Syu again, this time, it ran properly (I think)
Rebooted the computer, ran into  a kernel panic:
UFS: unable to mount root on unknown-block(0,0)
. Followed This thread and  the wiki and edited the instruction on Grub's boot screen to set
    root=/dev/hda1 ro
    and added
    initrd /initrd26.img
    to the line uderneath.
this allows me to boot (sort off), but I then get the following error:
/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off
From there, I get what seems to be a limited shell (get the "#" sign but not the location I am in such as "root@archbox:#" which I would expect). Here, I am snookered. If I search the wiki for this message, I get one article which refers to Cups and is not relevant to the issue, as far as I can tell, and I do not get any joy from the forum either.
Reinstalling the system is not a problem, but I would rather understand what is happening before I do it, so that I can fix it if the issue reappears, and because it fits into the "learning" purpose of installing this distro.
Could someone guide me on my next step?
    Thx
    Damien

tomk wrote:Change initrd26.img to initrd26-full.img, and you should be able to boot. When you're up and running, have a look at the wiki page on initrd for more info.
Thanks, that did it. Thought I had tired that as well, though, must have been tired and made some typos.....
On a sidenote, it seems that after the install, there was "/dev/discs/disc0" then came the partitions: part1; part2; part3, which is now translated as hda1; hda2; hda3.  I thought partitions started with hda0..  Am I wrong or is the way Arch auto-prepares the hard drive just skips the 0 partition?

  • Best Way to Configure Multi-boot System With GRUB/GRUB2

    Hello again,
Sorry for posting so much, but I'm really enjoying Arch so far! I had been reading a lot about Cinnamon so I wanted to try it (without installing the dependencies on my Arch installation), so I decided to install Mint, that went fine, and then I was hoping to add the entry to GRUB. I couldn't figure out how to do this, so I decided to try and install GRUB2 because it can autodetect other OS'. Well it didn't work and then I found myself without a bootloader. I couldn't figure out how to reinstall grub to the MBR (I tried the solution in the wiki and a couple of other places). I decided to reinstall Mint, and now I am booting into Arch through Mint's GRUB2. Two questions:
    1) How can I fix grub through Arch to have that as my bootloader again? Nothing seems to work that I've tried.
    2) What is the best way to configure grub or grub2 from Arch to allow myself options to multiboot other OS's in the future? I want to learn as much about UNIX as possible so I was planning on installing some other Linux distros and some other non-Linux UNIX OS's. I know this is a really newbie question, but I'm at a loss, I thought it was easier than it turned out.
PS. I didn't really like Cinnamon that much. I've been using Xfce and Openbox since I started using Linux (about a month ago), and it just seems too complicated! I don't like how little options you are given for customization. But that's just my opinion, everyone is different, I can see how it would be an improvement over GNOME3.
    Thank You!

I have Arch Linux and Debian Testing installed side by side on my laptop.
Arch uses Grub (legacy) and Debian uses Grub2. The way I have set it up is to have Arch's Grub on the MBR and then chainload Debian's Grub2 from there.
Debian's Grub2 is installed on its own partition rather than on the MBR
This is the line I use to chainload Grub2 from Grub (legacy)
    # (4) Debian chainload
    title Debian chainload
    root (hdX,X)
    chainloader +1
Additionally just for kicks, I also have an entry in Grub2 to get back to Grub.
    menuentry "Arch Linux chainload" {
    insmod part_msdos
    insmod ext2
    set root='(hd0)'
    chainloader +1
    boot
Note that the (hd0) above always points to the MBR.
I do not have to bother with one bootloader interfering with the other and the OS entries on each are handled separately on their own.
This setup has worked well for me for quite a while now. Before I started with Arch, I used a similar setup when I tried out various distros (Fedora, opensuse, etc.) alongside Ubuntu
    Hope it helps !

  • Help: Cannot boot Windows with GRUB

here is the strangest thing i have ever met:
I cannot boot my Windows system after I installed Archlinux, which took me a huge amout of time
I think the menu.lst file has no problem, the windows lines as follow:
    # (2) Windows
    title Windows
    rootnoverify (hd0,0)
    makeactive
    chainloader +1
The weird thing is that I can mount any other ntfs partitions but /dev/sda1, which contains the windows os
when I try to mount it, the error is as follow:
[mntent]: warning: no final newline at the end of /etc/fstab
WARNING: Couldn't set locale to 'zh_CN.UTF-8' thus some file names may not
be correct or visible. Please see the potential solution at
    http://ntfs-3g.org/support.html#locale
    Error opening '/dev/sda1': Permission denied
Failed to mount '/dev/sda1': Permission denied
Please check '/dev/sda1' and the ntfs-3g binary permissions,
and the mounting user ID. More explanation is provided at
    http://ntfs-3g.org/support.html#unprivileged
But with the same settings in /etc/fstab ,  I can mount other ntfs partitions, why???
I think the two problems above should be related

And I would advise to remove the bootable attribute from sda6, I doubt windows will like to "see" its own partition and another one marked as bootable, even if it's a logic partiton.

  • Java 64-bit Windows 7 - Error with Tomcat Install

Downloaded and ran jre-6u20-windows-i586-s.exe on a Win host (Dell PowerEdge R610 with 16 Core 2.27 GHz Intel Xeon) running Windows 7 64-bit. The website said if you're running a 64-bit Windows OS then download that file.
When I run the command "java -version" it says,
    "C:\Users\plozanci>java -version
    java version "1.6.0_20"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_20-b02)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 16.3-b01, mixed mode, sharing)"
I'm trying to install Apache Tomcat 6.0.26. Getting the error: "[206 javajni.c] [error] %1 is not a valid Win32 application."
After searching the web, it looks like the Tomcat is looking for a 64-bit JRE but encountering a 32-bit version. I thought that the jre-6u20-windows-i586-s.exe file had the 32-bit & 64-bit versions. If this is true, how do I get Tomcat to use the right version?
If its false, where is the 64-bit version for Windows 7?

No. They are separate installers. The 32bit will run on a 64bit OS, but it is not 64bit. If you need the 64bit, you will need to download the 64bit installer.
    You will need: jre-6u20-windows-x64.exe
    Go: http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
    select: Download JRE
    select: Windows x64
    Happy downloading!

  • Error with re-installing Illustrator. Exit code: 7 ? Help!

    Hello,
I had problems opening my Illustrator-program (from Adobe Creative Suite 5, Design Premium) as it kept on opening a new file window, and not the program itself. I could keep on opening this file-window eternally, not in any way could i get in to the program, so I chose to un-install the Illustrator - not the whole package.
Now when i try to re-install Illustrator in Adobe Application manager, it ends up with saying that a mistake happened and:
    "Exit Code: 7

ERROR:  - Adobe Flash CS5 depends on Flash Player to be installed.

I have installed on two computers, and I don't know if Adobe counts this as my third time installing and therefore wont let me? Even though it's on the same computer, name user and everything.
Now: Can anybody help me getting back the program?
I'm not really good with computers, and I cannot find a direct line to Adobe, so I hope someone can help
    Best, Julie

Sorry, but this is not the right answer, it has nothing to do with lightroom 5.
It's Adobe Illustrator and is has been working 7 days ago, I can't see why it has something to do with the hardware, my mac is super new.
    it's something else.

  • Will not boot up with maverick installed

MAC PRO WILL NOT BOOT UP AFTER INSTALLING MAVERICK

I know it can appear like Mavericks is causing an issue, but really what has happened is the installation has uncovered some operating system issues that previously existed. It's typically best to backup your data and perform an Erase & Reinstall before doing an Mac OS X upgrade. This ensure you get a good, clean, stable copy of the OS before moving forward.
All the same, if you're getting a gray/white screen at startup, try following the steps in this KB article
Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup

  • There is not enough memory error with 8gb installed

    Description:
I'm getting an error when trying to copy or cut a collection of basic shapes in CS6 on Mac OS X 10.8.
    It reads:
There is not enough memory to complete the operation.
To increase available memory, close other open documents or applications.
But when i check activity monitor there is plenty of memory available. I can succesfully copy a smal(ler) amount of shapes.
    Steps already taken:
Tried copying after a system restart with no other programs running.
Tried adding more memory (i had 4gb originally, I just upgraded to 8gb).
    I reinstalled Flash
I tried the same procedure (copying the same amount of shapes) on another machine with a similar amount of RAM and this works fine.
Is there a way you can allocate more memory to flash, or is this some setting that i'm missing?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
P.s. I read this thread http://forums.adobe.com/message/3609214#3609214, and my problem is only different in that i don't have some huge files i'm dealing with. The .fla is only ~10mb.

    Thanks for chiming in Mataxia.
One thing you can try is selecting the layers that have the shapes you want to copy. Then right click and choose copy layers. In my case this works even though selecting just the shapes (instead of the layers) will cause the memory error.
I'm using this as a workaround, but i can imagine that this isn't of any help in all cases.
This confirms my suspicions that this is a bug in flash. Would be great if someone from Adobe were reading this...

  • Error with silent install

    Hello,
I have problem with the silent install of  BlackberryDesktopSoftware 1.1b29
I have try to install with /S and nothing.
    I have try to install with this option  " setup.exe /s /L1033 /v" /qn ALL_Users =1 " and nothing again.
I have try to install the older version of BBDesktop sofware and it's works fine with the second option.
Do you have any Idee ??
    thanks

    Hi,
Just Pro 7.0.0 (I'll integrate the patches to 7.0.9 later)
I'm not keen on an Admin install, as this poses problems when patching (i.e. you have to do a "reinstall=All"). I prefer to integrate released patches into the silent install package, and for subsequent patches, just package them for silent install and push them down to the client.
Reader 8.0 is on the machine only.
The base build contains Reader 8.0, the we deliver a package to the machine to silently install Acrobat Pro 7
    Thanks,
    mark

  • Z87-GD65 Boot Problems With 16GB installed

    Hi All,
    My machine spec
    Intel 4770
    16gb Corsair Vengeance Pro
MSI GTX 780 Twin Frozr Gaming
    Corsair RM850 power supply
    SanDisk extreme II 240GB SSD
    MD Bios 1.8 default settings.
and that's all I have plugged in the board at the moment.
The problem is once I add the second stick of ram and do a real cold boot (like the next day) the machine doesn't boot. The leds just keep cycling.
The funny thing is if I take the second stick out it will boot. Then if I add the second stick back it boots fine and will work all day, no blue screens.
Then next day back to it not booting and cycling leds. I've tried swapping the ram sticks etc and they are in slots 2 and 4.
one other thing I've noticed is it takes a long time to shut down. I'm taking a minute after windows closes.
This is my second GD65 the first one wouldn't boot at all with the GTX plugged in and the same with my old 7870.
    any ideas??
    cheers
    Johnny

Don't the Sandisk Exterme 2's use a Marvell chipset?
The previous generation SanDisk Extreme SSD used a SandForce controller, with largely unchanged firmware. Like Crucial’s M500, the Extreme II uses Marvell’s 88SS9187 (codename Monet) controller. "courtesy of Anandtech.
Its time to do a manual memory setting. Set it to 1600 at 1,545 or the closest you can get to 1,575 and ensure your memory timings are set at 9.9.9.24. Retest

  • Lenovo X1 Carbon PXe boot errors with SCCM 2007

I know there are many posts on this and I've gone through them all, but I am still having issues PXe booting a X1.  I have a USB ethernet dongle (the new type with the rounded edge). the part number is 0b67708. It's branded Lenovo but when I pxe it recognises it as ASIX AX88772b. So far so good. It picks up an IP from DHCP ok, recognises the hardware as x64 and then tries to download the \smsboot\boot.sdi file from the SCCM 2007 server. It waits for 20 seconds then falls over with the following:
Status: 0xc0000001 - Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible.
Now, I have the the following drivers in the boot.wim file:
    x86 -
    1. Lenovo USB2.0 Ethernet Adapter 5.12.7.0
    2. PCI bus
    3. Intel ICHR/DO/DH SATA AHCI Controller
    4. Intel USB 3.0 Root Hub
    5. Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller
    x64 -
    1. Lenovo USB 2.0 Ethernet Adapter 5.14.4.0
    2. PCI Bus
    3. Intel ICHR/DO/DH SATA AHCI Controller - 2821
    4. Intel USB 3.0 Root Hub
    5. Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller
I have tried using the ASIX drivers, all previous driver version, adding in the mass storage drivers, adding in the USB 3.0 drivers, praying to the PXe gods but nothing works.
All other hardware works fine. Any suggestions greatly welcomed.
    Cheers - Mark.

Make a USB recovery drive before reinstalling.Thats the only option with a preload. With a retail serial number, you can download an iso with the upgrade assistant.
Also, how much ram do you have. If yopu have more than 4GB, you will need 64 bit XP, or the performance will take a hit. I tried XP on my W530, but I had to change several settings in the BIOS/UEFI.
    W530(2436-CTO): i7-3720QM, nVidia Quadro K2000M,16GB RAM, 500 GB hard drive, 128GB mSATA SSD, Ubuntu 14.04 Gnome, Centrino Ultimate-N 6300.
    Yoga 3 Pro: Intel Core-M 5Y70, Intel HD 5300, 8GB RAM, 128GB eMMC, Windows 8.1, Broadcom Wireless 802.11ac.
