Boot message: problem with hard drive detected. Slow loading of windows 7

Good Day
I am having a problem with my hard drive, everytime it boots these days it starts with a message: Warning: a problem with the hard drive has been detected, followed by an extremely slow loading of windows. then once in windows it gives me Anothet message
the messsage says hard drive failure imminent you should back up you data etc.
My specs are:
Intel core 2 duo e8400 3.0 ghz
4 gig ddr3 transcend
1 tb seagate 7200.12
giga byte nvidia 9800 gt 1 gig ddr3
Please help lots of data.

Another option:
Take your hard drive out and slave it into another KNOWN WORKING PC.
Back-up your data immediately. Slow boot usually indicates that the drive is going to die. (Check your warranty!)
Then, run "chkdsk /r" from the host PC to check the failing drive. (It is good to match OSes if you can.)

Snow Leopard is a Mac OS X version. You say that it's the version you have in your Mac (10.6.8). Do a back up of your files, format the hard drive (using Disk Utility) and reinstall again

  • FYI: MS-7125 BIOS has problem with Hard Drives withNative Command Queuing (NCQ)

For those the have messed my two treads on which both ended up being cause by K8N Neo4 BIOS problem with HD's with NCQ.
Will wonders never cease? MSI Support finally conceded the BIOS has a problem with Hard Drives with NCQ and they have forwarded the problem to their programming department.
However, do not look for any results for above two weeks.
    Roger

The problem that this thread has been trying to follow is the incapability of the nVidia RAID Controller with Serial ATA Type 2.5 drives.  I know the threads has been hard to follow and part of that is because when I started the thread I had what appeared to be three totally un related problems, but all three were traced down the common problem of the incapability of RAID Controller with Serial ATA Type 2.5 drives.
The title of this thread is MS-7125 BIOS has problem with Hard Drives with Native Command Queuing(NCQ).  The statement was true at the time it was written and has nothing to do with memory problems.
Sense the thread was started MSI has fixed the BIOS part of the problem, but we have sense learned the nVidia RAID Controller Command software and its driver has problems too.  I have been working MSI Support, they have been using me to test pre-beta BIOS and Drivers soon.   Of the testing I have done the pre-beta BIOS worked and the Pre-beta 32-bit driver works.  I am assuming that the latest BIOS V1.B had as part of it included fixes was the needed fixes for working with the nVidia RAID Controller as I have test the pre-beta RAID Driver with BIOS Version V1.B as the Raid array function fine windows XP Pro 32-bit Edition.  As I have had no communications with MSI support of over a week now I am hoping for a release of 32-bit and 64-bit RAID Drivers.   But, nobody should get the hopes up, because through other backdoor sources nVidia is having a hell of a time.  One reason for this I heard is that the nVidia RAID Controller is fully software, no hardware other than the electrical drive interfaces.  Their problem started when they tried using the old 32-bit code Controller with new 64-bit hardware drivers and now they are having to totally rewrite the controller core in 64-bit code.  But, knowing my source, it may all be fiction.
The RAID Array you say is up and running, are the drives full specification SATA 2.5 in other words do the both have 3Gb/s speed and NCQ.  If you send me the full part numbers I will check the specifications a get back to you.  Because if you have nVidia RAID 0 Array you working you will be the first to have done it and there about 230 people around the world that would like to know how you did it, even MSI, who's pre-beta nVidia RAID Drivers that will work with BIOS V1.B for 32-bit Windows only and nothing for Windows XP 64, would like to know.

  • Problem with hard drive name

A friend of mine was having problems saving documents. She somehow wound up with her boot disk being named "\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\". I'm guessing it was renamed that by accident. I suggested deleting all of the slashes and changing the name of the drive back to Macintosh HD, but she says every time she does that, it reverts to all slashes.
    Any ideas?

What kind of problem? What does the message say verbatim? Run the drive test within the BIOS setup (F10 as you power on) and see what it says. Likely you need a new hard drive. They are not too expensive and if you replace it while the old drive is functioning it is fairly easy to just clone the old disk to the new. If you wait until the old one is dead it becomes a much tougher proposition.

  • Strange problem with hard drive

My system has been up and running perfectly since i built it and ive not had any problems untill now.
I often take my hard drive out and take it round to a friends house so I dont have to burn any cds/dvds. This time ive plugged it all back into my machine has normal gone to boot up, and I get the nvidia boot agent giving me crap and it does not detect any of my hard drives ( i have 2 ) I dont use any special sata or raid just the normal set to master and slave as always.
I've unplugged everything and started with the basics 1 hard drive, 1 stick of ram and graphics card, still doesnt detect it, tried the other hard drive on its own and still doesnt detect it, I've also swapped the ide cable with a spare ive got and still the same.I've also cleared cmos.
I dont know what to do now can anyone offer any advice ?

I've ended up formatting my hard drive and reinstalling windows and it works now, but my second hard drive the one I use for storage and no essential files.
c: is for windows and program files only
d: is my pictures/music/films and all the crap
but now when I try to click on my second hard drive I can see all my files what were there before but when I click say on a picture it says no image can be displayed and sometimes when I click on a folder it says this drive is not formatted wish to format it now.
Is there anything I can do to stop it saying that ? or actually be able to retrieve what was on the other hard drive. Also I have the jumpers set like this in this picture
    http://www.maxtor.com/_files/maxtor/en_us/documentation/jumper_settings/style_a1.htm
It is the model and everything for my hard drive and I've got it set like Slave with CLJ, that is the one I have my storage crap on. Is it safe for me to set it to normal slave will that help ? it's a 60gb drive.
    Thanks in advance
    Nick

  • T60P: Problem with hard drive password

Hello, I have a T61P that broke.  Both the BIOS and the hard drive were protected by a password.  I have a spare T60P that I swapped the hard drive into but for some reason the password will not work.
I know 100% that the password that I am entering for the hard drive is correct as I've been using it everyday for the last 8 months.  Is it something between the two models that would cause a problem?
I know the passwords are stored on the drives themselves so I don't suppose upgrading the BIOS would help.

The extended hardware tests say theres no problem.
In verbose mode it says theres an I/O error on my boot hard drive and it automatically did this fsck_hfs thing and logs the errors:
    disk0s2: I/O error.
0 [Level 3] [ReadUID 0] [Facility com.apple.system.fs] [ErrType IO] [ErrNo 5] [IOType Write] [PBlkNum 26847808] [LBlkNum 0] [FSLogMsgID 152701040] [FSLogMsgOrger First]

    s;AppleAHCIDiskQueueManager::setPowerState(0x7179800, 2 -> 1) timed out after 100105 ms
(By the way I had to rewrite these from a picture I took. None of these actually got logged, probably because of writing errors. The logs on the console showed only the successful boots done when I booted via usb)
In single user mode I ran fsck -fy and it picked up no errors saying that Macintosh HD appears to be okay. So i'm thinking the errors aren't to do with reading the hard drive but writing on it.
Edit: for some reason the square brackets and slashes are being confused as format changes in the post so heres a screenshot: http://grab.by/7nBl

  • Probleme with Hard Drive Network 1TB

    Hello,
First I apologize in advance for my French / English translation
    I'm not very good.
Yesterday I bought a hard drive has a special.
The hard drive was still nine races.
is a network hard drive (Iomega Home Media Network Hard Drive Cloud Edition 1TB - S / N: 6AAN2200EE).
It fonctionais very well, I navigais on the home page, the options ...
I started to put a day the firmware (being connected to the network, the better was worth by measuring security).
So I am the procedure, I download the firmware, sending the hard drive, the setting applies to days.
I see the blue bar scroll through until the moment he notes redemarage underway.
    I let them.
reading the instruction he drive if it restarts it was not the done manually.
    thing I did.
HDD starts, White LED lights Fixed LED Blue who says he is accessing the hard disk.
And the bot 30 Second LED Blaanche it starts flashing and without stop.
The manager software can not find the hard drive.
With you had this kind of problem and qu'lele is the solution?
I tried to contact iomega in France but no response.
I also began dismantling the drive to connect directly to my PC.
On the hard drive there are 3 Partition.
    A non-allocated
    A 20GB.
    a 911GO.
    No partition is accessible.
I tried another hard drive with NTFS partitiion, white light remains fixed and there is a steady red LED lights.
    If someone has an idea
    Thank you

    Hello fonfonse
To be clear, were you trying to updating the firmware on the unit?  If the unit has a flashing white power led after the update and it never goes to a solid state.  That means the unit is not booting and the firmware update most likely has become damaged.
If that is the case support in your region would need to be contacted about the firmware imager utility which would correct the firmware issue.
Some steps to try this reset method:
#1. Press and hold down the reset button for 4 seconds.
#2. Then remove the power cord while still holding the reset button.
#3. Wait about 5 seconds and then plug the power cord back in while still holding the reset button.
#4. Release the reset button after 4 more seconds.

  • Can't load Tiger - Problem with hard drive or other?  What to do next?

I would like some advice on installing Tiger on an IMac PowerPC G4 (700 MHZ machine). This machine has 512 MB SDRAM. The machine is currently running Mac OS 10.3.9. Thus far I have been unable to install Tiger.
The machine is 5 years old and was run in Classic OS 9 for several years. There have been no material problems since upgrading to 10.3.9 several years ago.
I have been Installing with Archive. The install does 100% of the Checking Installation DVD but very soon after entering the Preparing for Installation/Verifying Destination Volume (the task bar has only filled about 5%) it kicks out of the install saying that there were errors in installing the software. No further information is provided.
I have disconnected all external devices and run the Tiger disk utilities. I receive the message that an “Invalid catalog record type” has been encountered and that “Volume Check has failed.”
“Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit”
    “1 HFS volume checked”
“1 volume could not be repaired due to error”
At this time, I do not know what steps to take next.
Should I get a stronger utility program to try to mend the hard drive?
Should I conclude that the Tiger update is not feasible given the age of my machine?
I don’t have an external drive to load everything off of the iMac to do an Erase and Install. I am reluctant to do this anyway in case this will not fix the above issue?
Any advice would be most welcome.
    700 Mhz PowerPC G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Thank you for your reply.
I found the article you sent me to so fascinating with the pictures.
Sad to say, that this is completely beyond me from a mechanical and personal dexterity perspective. I actually only knew what two items were in the tools required list. I think I could only get through two steps: set imac on soft surface (but not wool blanket) and take the bottom off.
Therefore, I think the next step is to go to the Mac store with my problem description and the imac and see what they can do.
Based on reading the article, I think I should also have more memory installed if in fact, they are going to take the bottom off at the Apple store. Would you agree?
Alternatively, it occurs to me to simply keep using the imac in 10.3.9 and save for a new laptop since I'm now running wireless network and it would be fun to have another laptop accessible around the house. Or maybe save for a new desktop...
    Any thoughts?

  • Disk Utily - Problem with Hard Drive Erase

I have just upgraded my 12" PowerBook G4 Aluminium with a 80GB Hitachi Travelstar 5K100. I cannot get the disk to Erase (and hence format) in Disk Utilty.
I booted from the Mac OS X Panther Disc One and ran the Disk Utilty. The new drive is visible in the left pane. I selected it, clicked on the Erase tab, selected MAC OS Extended (journaled), clicked Erase, and then Erase again (from the "are you sure?" Dialogue box). A progress bar then appears in the bottom right hand corner with the caption "Partitioning" to the left of it, and about 2mm of blue showing as progress. It does not, however, make any further progress, no matter how long I leave it. I understand, from what I have read, that the erase process is normally quite rapid?
I have tried the Erase routine several times now, each time with the result described above. The caption "partitioning" seems strange, as I am not trying to partition the drive.
I have spent hours trawling the web looking for a solution to this problem, but without success. I am extremely frustrated by the situation, especially as the physical replacement was actually pretty straight-forward.
Has anyone come across this problem before? If so, what's the diagnosis and is there a resolution?
    PowerBook G4 12" Aluminium   Mac OS X (10.3)   867MHz, 256MB RAM, 40GB HD

    Hi Gerry:
When erasing (formatting/initializing, take your pick) a hard drive for the first time, Disk Utility will show one entry for the hard drive in the column on the left. (This entry typically includes the manufacturer and/or model information.) During the initialization process, Disk Utility will by default create one partition (formatted volume) utilizing 100 per cent of the available capacity.
    1. Select the hard drive to be erased.
    2. Go to the Erase tab, select the Volume Format (by default it is Mac OS Extended (Journaled)), and give the volume a name.
    3. Click on Erase. The captioning first states that it is partitioning the drive, and the progress indicator holds at a couple of millimeters for anywhere from a few seconds to a minute. It should then change to "Formatting", and the progress bar will complete within a few more seconds.
I just erased a 400GB external firewire drive and the whole process took less than a minute. If it gets stuck on "Partitioning" and it never says "Formatting", then I'd suspect the hard drive. Some defect on the drive is preventing Disk Utility from creating the partition.
You could try using the Partition tab instead of the Erase tab; try to make two equal partitions, and if it's successful, delete the partitions and try to make one. Kappy, who's one of the veterans around here, always suggests using the Partition tab for initializing a new disk. Maybe he knows something we don't.

  • HELP! Problem with Hard Drive

When ever i would turn on my macbook it would go to the apple logo and just stay there. So i put in the operating system disc to reset the system however no device to store the os came up so i went into disc utilities and it had this message..
This drive has reported a fatal hardware error to disk utility.
if the drive has not failed completely, back up as much data as you can and then replace it with a working drive.
when i click on Macintosh HD and click info it says it can be repaired
so any suggestions on how i can fix this? or do i need to bring it into the store?

If the drive can be repaired and is not failing then do this:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • Problems with hard drive after update

I updated something on my macbook pro 2 nights ago.  I'm pretty sure it was a mavericks update.  After doing so my iphoto wouldn't open.  It was stuck on opening.  So I shut everything down.  When I tried to start it back up it failed.  I've tried everythign I've read it seems to no avail.  It says the hard drive is find.  But the volume Macintosh HD won't repair.  I get this message "Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files." like so many others have.  Only I can't reformat the disk.  I put the OS on a flash drive and thats how I'm using it right now.  What can I do?  I can't afford disk warrior.  If I buy another hard drive, will I somehow be able to get whats on the old one off? It says 130gb are still used up which is about what I had so I guess all my pictures are still on there?  Also I no longer have iphoto when booting from an external disk.  It wants to charge me 15 bucks.  Shouldn't this be saved under my apple id or soemthign?

Someone said they had this same question.  Was there a mass mess up this past update?  I read Apple will tell you its just coincidence ahd something to do with it happening to others but  I think thye should be able to do something.

  • Thunderbolt port problems with Hard drive

Hello guys, since I updated to Yosemite 10.10.2 I have a problem with port thunderbolt, to which I have connected a hard disk. When I turn off the hard disk with its button after pressing "eject", the hard disk turns off but also restarts the MAC. I tried to connect it to the USB3 and it works ok. This problem I had never experienced with the previous operating system. Some of you can help me? Thank you very much!!!! ;-)

I had problems with my hard drive and was able to replace it myself. I am not technical at all but was still able to do it. Go on line and you will find some sites on how to do this they are very good. It did not take long and I am using the Powerbook to respond to your thread. Good luck.

  • New MacMini.....Any problem with hard drive greater than 500gb?

I'm interested in buying a new MacMini. I could definitely use a hard drive larger than 500gb though. Is there any problem installing a drive larger than 500gb? Since the Mac store only offers 320 and 500gb, I'm wondering if there is some limitation (special size?) or other problem.
I'd rather not have to use an additional external drive.
    Thanks in advance.
    Fabian

    Hi Fabian,
any 2.5" SATA harddisk with a maximum height of 9.5mm fits in the Mac Mini.
OSX doesn't "care" about the amount of GB the harddisk has.
With the above specs 750GB seems to be the largest widely avaiable size but 1TB should be avaiable too.
Have a look at MacSales or NewEgg.
