Bootcamp and Time

After using windows in bootcamp and I return back to my mac desktop, the time is always 9 hours or so behind what it actually is, even though while in windows it's correct and before going in to windows from the mac side it's correct. Is there a setting I can use so that the mac resets the time properly after exiting out of bootcamp? Thanks.

I would really like to see a solution to this. Most of the posted "solutions" revolve around having the system connect to a time service. This is not a solution.
It is just totally inappropriate for a system clock to be reset like this all the time. Too much software relies on various timestamps to work properly and something critical is going to get overwritten somewhere sooner or later.
I would like to hear why it happens from someone in the know. I am guessing that Mac and PC read some system integer and interpret it differently, so it needs to happen very early in the boot process.

  • Bootcamp and Time Machine

I just got a new mac about a week ago, and I was sad to learn that I couldn't play pc games on it without Bootcamp. I started to use this utility, but then I noticed that it said to back up my files on my mac. First of all, is this even necessary (I haven't installed any files (only iWorks) or created any documents) for me right now? Or should I go the safe route and purchase an external hard drive for Time Machine to back up my hard drive? I don't have wireless, so I would need to purchase an external hard drive - not Time Capsule. I have a standard Macbook Pro 13, so I'm assuming the 320gb external hard drive would be okay to purchase, if necessary. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Jerome,
One more thing you should keep in mind while preparing to use Boot Camp to repartition your disk, as Kappy explained, is the fact that Time Machine is an incremental backup solution. It will keep updating the backup periodically while you're logged into the Mac side. Now that's a good thing, and I heartily recommend that you use Time Machine to keep a running backup of your Mac's files. But this function isn't really needed if you just want to make a backup prior to using Boot Camp.
For that, a simple one-off backup to an external hard disk will suffice. For that I'd recommend the excellent Carbon Copy Cloner (see http://www.bombich.com/ for details). It's easy to use, it'll create a bootable backup (meaning you can boot off the clone if you can't boot your Mac off its internal hard disk for some reason), and it's donationware.
You can go ahead and use Boot Camp without making a backup first. If you haven't installed any programs or documents yet, then the worst-case scenario is you may have to reinstall Mac OS X and iWork. Make sure you have those disks handy before proceeding.
And you shouldn't be sad that you can't play PC games without Boot Camp, you should be happy! Prior to Boot Camp, you'd have had to buy two computers to enjoy the best of both worlds!

  • Bootcamp and WIndows 7 doesn't work

    Hi,
well I'm kinda freaking out. Since I installed a SSD myself into my Imac 21,5 inch, I had to replace the optical drive with the SSD. So now I had the prblem that I wasn't able to install Win 7 via Bootcamp since it doesn't support external DVD-Drives. After trying every solution provided on the internet I decided to open the Imac again, reinstall the optical drive, install windows 7 and replace the optical drive again. When installing Win 7 there was no problem, it booted and all worked fine. So I installed the bootcamp drivers for Win 7 and so on. And then, after reinstalling the SSD, Win suddenly was unable to boot. I get nothing but a black screen with a white blinking "_". I thought what the .... and came to the conclusion something went wrong. But before freaking out I had the idea to try VMware. After clicking on Bootcamp and clicking on start, it all worked. I was able to boot into Win 7, install updates and so on. So I guess nothings wrong with the installation. But what is it then? I can't figure it out and I would really hate  hate if I had to reopen my Imac because it really *****...
Well If anyone's able to come up with I solution I would really appreciate it!
    Thx in advance
    David
PS: All drivers are up to date!

I've been trying for a day and a half to get it to work on my 27". Ive swopped the superdrive for an SSD too.
I didn't realise that you couldn't install it from an external drive so i'll stop wasting my time with that one.
For the record I've tried to,
Make a bootable USB stick drive - didn't work
Make a bootable Hard Drive - didn't work
I'm going to swop the HD for the optical drive and try to install it on to the SSD. Then i'll take the CD drive out and replace the Hard drive. See how that goes!
    I'll keep you updated...
David... Did you sort your problem? if so how?
    Thanks

  • Is it still impossible to do bootcamp and VMWare or Parallels?

I use bootcamp extensively to run several windows programs, mostly MS Office 2010. I also need to use Office 2011 so being able to switch back and forth between OS X and Win 7 is essential (I do this because I'm a consultant and curriculum developer--not because I'm a masochist). I've used bootcamp for years and it does a pretty good job once you get all the drivers issues sorted out.
I've also used VM ware, but had a couple of bad experiences where I lost my virtual machine and all the data on it.  I do backups of course, but it was still really inconvient.  Plus the driver situation when doing the virtual thing rather than bootcamp just wasn't quite there yet--another reason to use bootcamp. So for the past 2 - 3 years I've just been resigned to using bootcamp.
But occassionally it's just not convenient to reboot my system to switch from OS X to Windows, especially when all I want to do is check out some quick thing under windows but then quickly get back to Mac--two reboots!  On the other hand, when I'm doing a windows client demo or such where failure's not an option, I'd want to be in bootcamp because it feels so much more solid.
I'm wondering if Apple or the virtual OS companies have made any changes that would allow me to have both bootcamp, which I'd use for windows in most situations, AND a virtual machine in OS X that I could use for quick trips to Windows but keep working in OS X without having to reboot.  Most of my data files are on dropbox, so even if the bootcamp partition and the virutal machine disk were inaccessible to each other I'd be able to access the files I need.
If the answer is simply NO, you can have bootcamp or virtural machines but not both, then my next question is this:  Is either VMware or parallels getting close to being as robust as bootcamp for running windows, or should I just plan to keep on bootin' for another few years?

    Hey Bob,
Thanks for the information. My last experience was with VMWare 1 and I don't think this functionality was available then. I downloaded today version 4 and at this point I am running Win 7 within MacOS.  Haven't tried rebooting to my bootcamp partition yet or printing or sharing, etc. If it works as advertised though I should be a happy camper.
The import option doesn't strike me as a good one for my situation.  I have 500GB on my MBP and 120 GB allocated to my windows bootcamp partition. If I do the import option with VMWare I'd basically need another 120 GB of the total space and then I'd have two unsynchronized windows disks, one under bootcamp and the other under VMWare.
Running VMWare as a Mac application I can see it's a bit slower than running in bootcamp, but I expected that.
This is exciting stuff and I appreciate you taking the time to enlighten me.
    Thanks

  • How should I install/setup a single OS of windows 7 to run through bootcamp and parallels 7 on my new macbook pro?

I just bought a new macbook 8g ram and 750g harddrive and want to be able to run windows 7 through bootcamp and parallels. How do I setup that up and install a single version of windows (want to be able to utilize heavy programs - photoshop, 3D modeling CAD etc. - by installing them once and being able to use them through parallels 7 or bootcamp)? Please let me know of anything that may red flag by doing this and clear concise instructions of which to do first/ settings for bootcamp and parallels

BootCamp is directly booting your computer into Windows for full hardware access and performance, just like a PC. It's free from Apple.
    https://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/
Virtual machine software (paid) like Parallels and VMFusion both can take the Bootcamped Windows and make a copy for use in OS X in a window at the same time as using OS X, but less performance. It's usualyl easiler to use.
A free virtual machine option is VirtualBox, but it might not have all the bells and whistles of the payware options above, but works just  fine.
We can't provide detailed installation instructions, it's too much, you will have to read Apple's instructions and the manual for your virtual machine software.

No idea if Windows will do it, but you can run Windows without Bootcamp & have OSX available at the same time, which should give you all the Monitors that OSX uses.

  • Bootcamp and CAD

Does anyone have Bootcamp and CAD? I'm looking for a new Apple computer, but I'm really nervous about the problems I will encounter. I think that my CAD class is either using the 2008 or 2009 version. Oh and another question. Can you get the Mac Book Pro with Boot camp, or do you have to buy it? Please help.

There have been a few reports of the license for AutoCAD 2008 breaking, because of the time setting differences between Mac OS X and Windows.

  • Do I need to remove Bootcamp before Time Machine Restore?

Hello - anyone familiar with this scenario.
I have used TIME MACHINE from the very first day I had my iMac.  So it was started almost immediately after the initial boot of a brand new iMac case I ever needed to restore my Mac to that initial Day 1 state.
That day has come, but it's now two years, and in that time I have installed BOOTCAMP, Parallels and Windows 7.  That process created another partition, and created the required 'links' between my OSX and Windows via Parallels etc.
So my question is this - can I do a 'Restore from Time Machine' over the top of the new partioned set up of my iMac OR  or will it be now totally confused because of the changes I have made to my system in that time, and do I firstly need to remove Windows, Bootcamp, and erase the partitions I created back to one.
So in summary - will Time Machine do this when it restores, or do I need to do it before I restore?
I also have a CARBON COPY CLONE from Day 1 too.  Am I better using that instead - and if so, same question - will i need to remove Windows, and my Bootcamped partion first?
(My system is iMac late 2012 still running OSX Mountain Lion if that makes any difference)
    Thanks
    OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4), i7 / 3TB Fusion Drive / 24GB Ram

"Is Parallels using the BC partition as a VM, or is it a separate VM with its own virtual disk?"
I don't know - basically I have a BOOTCAMP partition and Windows is installed on that (using these instructions from the Parallels website)  I can then either open up Windows from in OSX Moutain Lion while keeping my mac running (and windows will run in its own little window - but within OSX.  OR I can also choose to boot dircetly wi windows when I tuen on my MAC - and then it runs independently of my OSX.
You are using the BC Windows and running it as VM. There is no separate VM with virtual disk.
"Are you planning to erase the internal drive(s)?"
I wasn't sure  - I want to restore my iMac like it was on the day I had it, before I partitoned BOOTCAMP and installed windows.  So my question is, will the TIME MACHINE restore get rid of WINDOWS and the BOOTCAMP partition for me as part of its restore - or do i have to that, and then restore using Time Machine
It is much simpler to run BC Assistant and use the last option - "Remove Windows". It is a bit cleaner.
"If the backup on TM which started on Day 1 has continued as you have made changes, including BC/Windows/Parallels, it has continued to backup OS X and partition information. I suggest you backup Windows using Windows Backup to a separate external drive formatted as NTFS, and also consider Winclone or CampTune for a OS X compatible BC backup, if you run into any issues."
As above, I am not bothered about keeping Windows or the BOOTCAMP partition, I want to resore my iMac to the DAY 1 status - when I did my first full Time Machine backup - which was before I created a Bootcamp partition or installed Windows.
I suggest removing Windows via BCA and backing up to Time Machine. You will keep you OS X intact and keep all your files on the OS X side.

  • Using Bootcamp and Fusion on SEPARATE installations

So if I install Vista on bootcamp, and then install fusion as a new installation with another 32 gb of space, will it let me activate and use both of them? Basically I want to be able to use photoshop on vista so I can utilize the graphics card and full hardware, but still use office in os x through fusion... will there be a problem, like will it block me from using vista because im using it on "two" computers or not? I don't want to just use the fusion on the bootcamp installation because then every time I go between the two I will have to reactivate
PS This Windows activation stuff is getting ridiculous, it's time for a change

Open Boot Camp Assistant (in Utilities) print out the instructions, setup Windows on its own partition, insall and run Windows natively, not much difference than on any laptop.

if i had installed a windows on bootcamp and for some reasons the windows had infected, does the mac gets infected or harmed?

Yes, when you run Win via BootCamp, the computer is a "real" Windows computer and just as vulnerable as any other Windows machine. It its the operating system, not the hardware, that creates vulnerability.
However, it also means you basicaly have two independent computers that happen to share the same physical space. The Mac side, as others have said, is not vulnerable to assaults that are made on the Windows side, so do not go installing a pile of anti-virus garage on the Mac side. It is unneeded at this time and will basically ruin your Mac's performance. The Windows side WILL need some form of protection.

  • Trackpad and Blue Screen under Bootcamp and XP (SP3)

I have this very annoying problem.
Whereas I run Windows XP in bootcamp and I use the multitouch trackpad the system "randomly" locks and I am presented with a blue screen of death. Other times the audio output is garbled with clicks as I press the pad...
The blue scree happens more frequently when the system is under load and is a VERY NASTY BUG of the trackpad driver that prevents to use the Macbook in mobility without a external mouse.
I am posting this since I didn't find other occourrences in the forum. For the more tech savy I'm running XP Home Sp3 and the Macbook is the first unibody. Also I'd been waiting since Jenuary for a update to this problems but nothins has come up yet - The "apple software update" is pushing just Safari 4 and I think this is hardly going to improve the situation.
    Any hint?

Apple needs to update the Trackpad driver as well as their wireless driver. There was a very long thread going on about the Trackpad driver and BSOD.
The soulution was to disable some functionality, sorry, I don't remember what exactly.
Possibly not related: The Apple wireless (Broadcom) driver causes audio drop outs but can be fixed with an update located on Microsoft's site, the Trackpad driver will need to be updated by Apple.

  • Bootcamp and Parallels - Activating windows

    Hi Guys,
I know some of you run both Bootcamp and Parallels.
How do you go about activating XP for both bootcamp and parallels at the same time, have any of you seen any problems?
    Cheers
    Andy

This is not entirely correct. Here's the info from the MacInTouch coverage:
I'm no software licensing expert, but it appears to me, from reviewing the license for Windows Vista Home, Home Premium and Ultimate [license PDF 1] and Windows Vista Business [license PDF 2], that Vista Business and Visa Ultimate (the priciest versions) may be the only versions that can be installed in a virtual machine under, say, Parallels or VMWare's forthcoming solution. Here is the text in the Vista Home and Home Premium licenses which bans the software's use in virtual machines:
"You may not use the software installed on the licensed device within a virtual (or otherwise emulated) hardware system."
A licensed device is a "physical hardware system". Use in Boot Camp would still be OK. Moreover, the licenses for Vista Business and Vista Ultimate allow use in a virtual machine but state that, if you do so, you're not allowed to use any content protected by DRM. It states:
"You may use the software installed on the licensed device within a virtual (or otherwise emulated) hardware system. If you do so, you may not play or access content or use applications protected by any Microsoft digital, information or enterprise rights management technology or other Microsoft rights management services or use BitLocker. We advise against playing or accessing content or using applications protected by other digital, information or enterprise rights management technology or other rights management services or using full volume disk drive encryption."

  • Replaced hard drive, bootcamp and missing memory.

    hello,
a little while ago, my hard drive gave up the ghost and so i had a replacement fitted under warrantee. previously i had partitioned my disk so that i could use bootcamp and windows when needed. after restoring my system on the new drive, i thought id lose the partition and windows and apps, i thought that time machine only backed up the osx part of my hard drive.
recently my new disk has filled up, its a 160g hard drive, and yet looking through all the files, i see that i only have about 148g used up. is it likely that the new disk was partitioned on restoring from time machine (id reserved about 10g for windows), that my 160g drive only really has a useable capacity of 148g, or that theres hidden files that are eating up storage space???
any help and remedies would be most useful!
    thank you in advance.

TM does not backup a Windows partition nor does it partition a backup drive. You would need to do that separately using Disk Utility and Boot Camp Assistant.
There are thousands of hidden files installed with OS X. It's quite likely you simply can't count the space they consume by adding up the space used by what's visible.
Depending on how you are determining space on the drive you may be getting mixed calculations. Although the drive has 160 GB capacity using Base 10 arithmetic, it has a 148 GB capacity using Base 2 arithmetic. Snow Leopard is supposed to display disk space using Base 10, but I believe Boot Camp Assistant is reporting the space using Base 2. This would account for the two different numbers.

  • Bootcamp and Parallels 5.0...

Can anyone tell me if I can have both Bootcamp and Parallels on the same hard drive. If so, do I have to install Windows twice (once with Bootcamp and another one with Parallels?)

You may use an installed BootCamp partition with Parallels - no need to install a 2nd time.
If using any flavor of Win 7 you will have to activate it a 2nd time (by phone) when using it from within Parallels.
