You do not have sufficient free space for a Windows 8 (or 7) installation.

  • The guide to bootcamp assistant states that bootcamp can only be installed on a drive with a single partition. New Macs with Lion preinstalled have two partitions - the second is a recovery partition.  How do I install Bootcamp?

Late in August 2011 I took delivery of a new 27" iMac with Lion preinstalled.  I need to run Windows as well. Following Apple's written suggestion, I printed off the then current 12 pages of the document "Bootcamp Installation & Setup Guide" which clearly stated that the hard drive you were going to install on had to have on it, before install, a maximum of one partition.  Using finder and disk utility I determined that there was only one partition.  Unbeknownst to me, there was (is) an additional hidden (from those two pieces of software) partition on the disk.  As of machines delivered new with Lion preinstalled, Apple has begun to include a "recovery partition".  In that partition there is a copy of the software necessary to reinstall Lion via a download from the Apple App Store.  Not knowing the partition was there, I cranked up  "Bootcamp Assistant" which nicely offered to repartition my hard drive creating a "Bootcamp Partition" in addition to the existing.  I told it how big to make each and hit the do it button, subsequently destroying my operating system.  Oh, it very nicely told me, after the damage was done, how many partitions were REALLY on the disk and that I could not install Bootcamp cause there were too many partitions.
Luckily the the Recovery Partition, which at that point I knew existed, was not harmed and after doing some research on another compter, I used it to once again download Lion from the App Store and reinstall. So, I have recovered but am still stuck with the problem:  how do I install Bootcamp in this new environment?

First you need to seriously back up your Mac.
A clone is an exact duplicate of your existing Mac HDD. Merely copying and pasting a drive will not make a bootable backup. In case of problems you can boot from an Ext HDD clone and use the utilities to repair, reformat, or clone the Ext HDD back to the internal Mac HDD.  While Time machine back ups are easy you can not boot from it. The best thing to have for any kind of problem is a bootable clone backup on an external drive. Some even have two external backup drives in case one fails. There are two good apps for cloning named SuperDuper and Carbon Copy Cloner.
In dealing with the recovery partition a simple approach is to clone the Mac partition to an external disk then re-partition the Mac to a single partition (GUID partition table) . Then clone the external disk clone back to the Mac. You will now have only one Partition and Boot Camp assistant sould not object.
Some have recommended getting rid of the recovery partition while others have advised not to do this. If you have the Lion USB Thumb Drive you do not need a recovery partition so can discard it without concern. There is another way to get rid of the recovery partition if you decide to do it but first be sure to have a backup of your Mac ( I know I sound like a nagging mom but many dead computers have been saved by this simple precaution).
    Use Disk Utility.
    1) Make the Recovery visible in Disk Utility by using a program like Secrets:http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/27025/secrets or MacPilot:http://www.koingosw.com/products/macpilot.php (15 day free trial).
    2) Highlite the Recovery partition and Control click it and select Mount the partition.
    3) With the Recovery partition highlited, erase the partition, you'll get an error message, ignore it.
    4) Now highlite the top identity of the hard drive and select the partition tab.
    5) Highlite the Recovery partition and press the minus sign.
    6) Click and hold on the bottom edge of the partition above and drag it to the bottom, if it doesn't go there automatically, the press apply.

Since installing Mountain Lion, Time Machine says says that my Free Agent Goflex (Seagate) external 2gb drive cannot be used as it is read only. I tried disc utility to repair permissions but that block is greyed out. The disc verifies as being OKI What next?

Ok, I solved this problem! I ejected the drive and then disconnected it both from the power supply and the USB connector. I then reconnected everything and powered it up again and Then went into TM preferences and chose the drive as the backup. TM did a new backup (well over an hour) and now works as advertised.

    Hello Everyone,
I have a MacBook older model with me.I am running 10.7.6 on that, I was trying to use BootCamp to install windows on my mac. Since BootCamp can only work on a single Volume, I partitioned my Hard Disk to one volume.
Using BootCamp I installed windows and everything worked fine. After installing windows and testing everything, I switched back to OS X and this time I tried to make another partition on my single portioned Mac volume and named it Backup. That too worked. Now I have three Volumes
    1)Development2)Backup3)BootCamp.
Next when I switched to Windows, It should the classic error, No Bootable device found, please insert a Bootable CD and press any key. When I tried to enter my Mac OS X install DVD and by pressing option key, it does not show me the proper Mac OS X development volume. It keeps going back to the No bootable device found message.
Any help will be much appreciated
    Regards
    Mithun

you can't add a partition in between - you put Windows to a new partition number.
    GPT (GUID)
    EFI
    Mac HFS
    Lion Recovery
    Windows
And now you have two HFS
One partition and one Windows (plus Lion Recovery).
If you were to have more, it can't be before Windows for one thing.

Yes. You can set the payment method to "None" once you log into iTunes on your PC/Mac. I have it set up this way.

Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
      1. See Lion/Mountain Lion's Storage Display.
      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
      4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
      5. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
      6. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.

  • Bootcamp says there is no USB-CD Device installed

    Hello,
i dont understand, Bootcamp says that i have to plug in a USB CD-Device to continue (I must install Windows 7 nativly).
But i have one connected. I do this not the first time. I did this bevor with the Same Mac and Same USB-CD-Dive?
    Is this a Mavericks Bug?
    kind regards

    I have the solution.
For people with the same issue as me i want to tell the reason.
You have to connect an externel DVD-Device plus a USB-Stick.

  • My time capsule says it has only 75gb free space but when i go through finder to it there is nothing there. trash is empty by the way.

my time capsule says it has only 75gb free space but when i go through finder to it there is nothing there. trash is empty by the way. i had to delete some things of it as it didnt have enough room and i was backing up too much irrelevant stuff. now it wants to do a complete back up - about 300gb but there is only 75 free. WT

Ok first what u have to do is remove the Time Capsule from the time machine software and make sure the computer does not back up to the time machine. Next go into disk Utility and find the time capsule. Once found, reformat the drive. Then start using it. If you cannot find the drive in Disk Utility, then open a finder window and find the drive in the sidebar. Right click it and find a button within the drop down menu that will allow you to reformat the drive. If you are forced to go to finder and you right-click the drive, you may have to explore all the options within the drop down menu to find the reformat option.

Can you connect to a wifi source on the device? Enable wifi in settings on the device itself. If you don't have wifi at home, there may be a local hotspot you can use for this.
The reason this happens is carriers don't want people downloading huge files that would slow their network as well as eat up your data plan.

  • MacWorld e-mail on ms apps had a rebuttal saying iwork now free, but the app store shows it at $30 for the 3 apps, so what's the story?

So I got my Mac World e-mail, it talked about the free apps from MS (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote), so I downloaded them, in the comments section of the article someone that didn't like them said there was no need as iWork was free and no subscription needed.
Anyway, after letting the ad for MS 360 play out, word opened, but it wouldn't let me access my skydrive, now called onedrive, it was grayed out and needed the 360 subscription, needless to say I deleted all of the office apps and based on the comments section of the article I went back to the app store to get iWork.
They are not free, each app is $9.99, according to the app store, so tell me is there something I'm missing, there were others saying it was free, so what is the truth here?
Currently I use Textilus for creating documents, well one or two, writing on the ipad is horrible, and it still doesn't recognize my printer or any documents I save in Textilus.  I have to save the page as a picture, open up the Epson app, select photos, and print.
I was hoping something useful would be available, but it looks like that's not going to happen.

Beginning last September (I beleive) the three iWorks app are free only for qualifying newly purchased devices (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5913)
And yes, on the iPad, MS office apps can only be used to read files unless you have an Office 365 subscription.
Can't respnd to what Textilus does or doesn't do when it comes to printing. That might be a question for the app vendor.

  • Going to install a PC with Arch in my car!

In my Miata, the center console has a single hole that usually holds a standard-sized radio and a junk holder.  When you take them both out, walla, the perfect size and place for a touchscreen!  So I'm going to put a display right on my console and install a computer in my trunk.  So here's how it's gonna go.
I'm buying speakers right now, a pair of Infinity 6020cs's.  I'm psyched because I didn't even know that sound quality could be this high with a brand name this reputable with a price this low!  AMAZING sound!  They come as a speaker/tweeder set with a crossover and I found it online for $70 (as compared to Best Buy's $191).  Anyway, speakers.  I'm also going to have a 12" Rockford Fosgate HE2 subwoofer in the trunk, housed by a box I'm going to build.  If I don't build a custom box that works around every corner I can, I won't be able to hold the things I would usually be able to fit in my trunk anymore, you know, like a box of pencils, a t-shirt, a pack of CD-Rs (but that's pushing it).  But not at the same time.  You know.  It's a Miata.
Sorry, I'm excited.  Point in saying this: I'm going to buy an M-Audio sound card for crisp audio and I want to use software EQs for everything.  Actually, if I can, I would love to skip the crossover the 6020cs's come with altogether, and since there are only two door speakers in a Miata, run the tweeders off the third and fourth channels of an amp.  This way, I can EQ out the lows to my sub, EQ the mids to my 6 1/2"s, and EQ the extreme highs to my tweeders.  So it would be a five-channel system, cause the sub would be mono.  Is there a way I can tune my sound like this directly with ALSA?  I would really like all my sound to be tuned the way I want it to without relying on a single piece of software, for example, the VLC equalizer.  I want to hear my audio EQed out the same all the time regardless of using VLC or if I popped open firefox and watched a YouTube video.  How can I do this?
My plan for power management would go like this.  Okay, so I start my car.  My computer comes out of hibernate and resumes any audio or what not that was going on.  Then I park it and get out.  My computer will still be running for about 10 minutes with the music automatically paused.  After 10 minutes, it'll go inter hibernate again, but if I hop in my car and start it, it'll resume the audio's playback.  The audio equipment will be turned off via the +12V accessory wire from my ignition, so only my computer will be running at this point.  Hell, I could even have the display turn off too.  But this brings me to a question.  Is there some software I could use that would run commands based of inputs from a serial port or something?  For example, the accessory lead drops the +12V signal, now I want it to wait 10 minutes.  I could run the +12V into a relay that trips pins on a serial port and x software could run a script that waits for ten minutes, and when the relay is activated again, a script executes that kills that script.  Or maybe even the other way around where the software would trip relays through the serial port, you know, to turn the sub on and off or something of that nature.  Does something like this exist?
My idea for HID is to utilize bluetooth.  I want to keep a portable keyboard (and mouse too, sometimes a touchscreen doesn't do what you want) in my glove box.  I don't want to use any console space for a keyboard.  Although, it would be very nice to have an on-screen keyboard when I need to do something quickly.  As for volume, track skip, etc, I'm going to use a touchscreen with buttons on the frame that'll respond to doing things like a stereo would.  I really don't want to have to fidget with software while I'm driving.  The screen will probably be very similar to this one.  I'm still deciding on brands.  Have any of you guys put a display in your car and have one to recommend?  I'm worried about buying a display without actually seeing it.  I don't want something that won't go dimmer than blindingly bright or something where the color looks like junk.  I'll look more on mp3car.com for this too.
I'm going to be able to stay online with my car too.  I plan on tethering my computer to my cell phone - it has 3G and the data moves pretty quick.  At home, I want to set up a file server that I can stream my music archive from (and download from when I know I'm going out-of-range).  I'll also have a wifi card in my car so when I park it in my driveway, I can get on my computer and administrate the PC.  I'm also fooling around with the idea of the computer acting as a remote-start and a security system, but that's for later.
So blah blah blah ... is there any good music player software that would work good in a car like this?  What would you recommend for a GPS solution?
Ongoing project cost (as of December 15, 2008):
    $85 - Intel D945GCLF2
    $13 - Kingston KVR667D2N5/512 (512MB DDR2 RAM)
    Total: $98

Your Miata already has one battery in the trunk -- and it's vented to the outside. Another back there would be no problem. Just buy another of the same kind and use a 'T' type connector to merge the vent tubes. Secure the thing down good. As for the "PC", some people remove the carpet from the deck behind the seats and under there there is a little "well" area.  They stick the thing in there.  Try hitting miata.net and searching the forum and you may find the post about the guy who did it.  Might save you some effort and R&D.
Yes, I have a Miata as well....My "toy" is a 2002 SE Blazing Yellow.  Only a 1000 of these things driving around!
You have a yellow one   That's killer, those are really rare!  Is it in good shape?  I love Miatas, they're so much fun and stupid cheap to own
The battery in my car is strapped to the chassis with a rope.  I don't have the factory battery mount.  I was going to weld one together soon though, but now that you mention vents, I'm curious.  How exactly is it fitted?  Time to Google ...

The Atom 330 is a dual-core with HT, sorry!
Really sweet project, though. Good luck!
As for SSDs, the crazy-pricey Intel ones may be worth waiting a little for... 80GB+ with _real_ 250Mb/s speeds! They smoke everything else. Do a lot of research here though, because some SSDs are really wretched. Also remember that SDHCs are extremely cheap and offer tons of storage, so a small and fast main SSD may be a good choice.
I kneeeeew there was a catch.  That's okay, I'll still have a dual 1.6 Ghz CD player   And regarding combining storage types, that is an excellent idea.  I'm definitely going that route.  I would love to use an SD card or a CF card as storage and a smaller SSD for the OS.   That's perfect.  Thank you!
Some good success so far ... just building up the OS at home until I can find a good screen, solid state disk, and power supply to use   I started a thread about xorg locking up and it turns out it was because of the new hald integration.  I LOVE the idea of combining hald and xorg!  But anyway, my GUI is up and running and it's setup the way I like as a desktop.  When I migrate the carputer into my car, I'll tweak things around so it'll be practical to use with a touchscreen.
Right now, I'm connected to the internet using Tetherbot with my Google Android phone and it works great.  So that takes care of the internet.  I have a bluetooth receiver and a GPS system that acts as a dongle when attached (will replace with a standalone GPS module later).  I'm tinkering with these.
Later on, I'm going to go to Goodwill, grab a multimedia keyboard, and gut it.  There's a removable ashtray next to the stickshift in my car, so I'm going to use this area to install a touchpad and the hacked up keyboard controls for the PC.  I will go to TAP Plastics and have them fabricate something nice that'll drop right in.  I'm going to source out buttons that look like arrows and the like to have designated buttons for skip, play, pause, stop, etc.  I'm also going to try to find a keyboard with one of those rotary volume controls and use it.  Nothing like a little xbindkeys   I would really like this to look fancy.  Not blue LEDs/carbon fiber/chrome fancy, more like "that guy did a good job" fancy.  Although if I could have the buttons lit when the car's parking lights are on, that would be killer.
So at this point, I need to buy these things for only the car PC to work in my car the way I want:
    * DC-DC PSU
    * 8" Transreflective screen that operates (or can operate) on 12VDC that can go very dim and very bright
    * Resistive touchscreen overlay, preferably USB (for when wearing gloves, it's a convertible)
    * Solid state disk, doesn't have to be too big or too fast
    * Bluetooth keyboard
    * USB touchpad
    * Goodwill keyboards, fancy switches, TAP fabrication
I'm probably looking at 300-500 more dollars on this end.  Throw another ... $300 in for the two-way speakers I want + an amp.  My sub and sub amp I have, but I need to build a cabinet.  Also, for an M-Audio sound card, I'll probably put aside another $100.  And yes, they make an astounding difference in sound quality.  I use an M-Audio 1010LT in my home studio with some audiophile headphones and the difference is very obvious
I'll try to take some pics of my car and where I'm going to put things soon.
